Product Description
Stolen Memories illustrates how Alzheimer Disease (AD) affected our family. It touches upon the not-always-perfect mother-daughter relationship and the resulting guilt. It describes how trying to separate the words of an AD patient from those of my mother created even more problems for me as her caretaker.Stolen Memories is a tool to help others recognize and come to grips with the disease sooner than we did.I hope to build an awareness of the following issues:what this disease can do to a family; how relationships can affect being a caretaker for an AD patient; the difficulties of an untrained caretaker attempting to manage an AD family member; and how important it is to ask for help. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Journey Past Forgetting
In January 1993, Marie Cloud's mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, but that diagnosis came only after several years of slow recognition of a mounting problem. Cloud's account of her family's journey with her mother down the dark, frightening and ever degenerating path of this illness may seem halting at times, but she never fails to reveal the brutal truths of her own responses to the loss of her mother bit by painful bit. The poignancy of Marie Cloud's story, the importance of it not only to the children and other relatives of Alzheimer's patients but to all baby boomers who are now facing health crises in their parents as well, make this a book well worth reading. Its portrayal of a woman with grown children of her own struggling with her feelings of inadequacy in the face of this impossible and terrifying illness is uncompromising. In one of the most moving moments in the book, Cloud, battling the guilt of having placed her mother in a nursing home against her mother's earlier wishes, suffers a nervous breakdown and begins psychotherapy. One wonders if Stolen Memories would have been possible had she not fallen completely apart and required help. I highly recommend this book to all who feel alone in the dark cavern of living with and still trying to love aging and deteriorating parents.

4-0 out of 5 stars An honest, touching account of one daughter's experience
For anyone who has lived with a family member who has Alzheimer's or another type of dementia, this book will be both a mirror and a comfort. Written in plainspoken, painfully honest language, Stolen Memories chronicles a daughter's experiences and feelings as she slowly loses a beloved mother to the ravages of Alzheimer's. The effects on herself and her family, the myriad ways with which she tried to cope with both her mother's disease and her own despair and guilt are touchingly told, without an ounce of self-pity. Ultimately this becomes a story not just of pain but of hope--- hope that in the future other families may be spared this experience through new research aimed at combatting this disease but also hope in the present that those who have to companion someone through 'stolen memories' can survive it themselves and become stronger and more whole individuals through that survival. As someone who grew up with a live-in grandmother who suffered dementia, the experiences in this book rang deeply true to me and helped me understand both my own and my mother's experiences better. I recommend Stolen Memories to anyone seeking the solace of knowing they are not alone in the toll that dementia can take on a family and the inspiration of witnessing Marie Cloud's capacity to overcome her own devastation. ... Product Description
Home on leave from World War II, author Ed Kanewske meets the beautiful, dark-haired Margie at his friend’s home. They fall in love at first sight, and the two marry shortly after Ed’s return from his overseas service. Thus begins a passionate, beautiful love affair that continues to this day.

Over the course of their married life, Ed and Margie raise two children, share in family vacations, and never stop loving each other. But in later years, Margie’s memory begins to falter, and she is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Reluctant to part with her, Ed takes care of Margie at their home for several years. When he is no longer able to manage Margie by himself, he must have her admitted to a nursing home. Despite their separation, Ed is never far from her side and visits her daily.

Ed is determined to find ways to cope with his separation from Margie. He seeks God’s help, involves himself with nursing home projects, and spends time writing. But Margie is always in his thoughts. 5-0 out of 5 stars useful, straightforward look at a tough topic
I read this book to my son's first grade class today. The pictures seemed to speak to the children. Some had known elderly relatives with similarly vacant looks in their eyes. The one page length answers to questions were perfect for this age group. The answers are straightforward. No false happy endings here and the children appreciated that. And the images of older people cuddling with grandchildren were reassuring. We screened several other books before choosing this one. My son chose it over others because "it felt true". ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Far too much gloom and doom for me...
When I read the release copy for The Brain Wash: A Powerful, All-Natural Program to Protect Your Brain Against Alzheimer's, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Depression, Parkinson's and Other Diseases by Michelle Schoffro Cook, I thought that the concept sounded interesting. But for me, the reality was significantly different.I could have done without all the gloom and doom of the first part of the book.By the time I finished, I would have thought it was a minor miracle that everyone hadn't yet succumbed to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's by now based on the writings...

Before we get too far into this review, let me state very clearly...I agree that diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's exist, and I have no problem with the theories that they may be caused in part by environmental and/or nutritional issues.Having said that, I don't think it's useful to say that pretty much everything we eat, drink, breathe, or touch will somehow put very bad things in our body and guarantee we'll die early.Part 1 of the book is where I got off on the wrong foot.Heavy metals such as cadmium, aluminum, and mercury are explained, symptoms of poisoning are listed, and sources of these poisons are listed. The symptom lists are enough to cause hypochondriacs to have a field day.Just about any ache or pain can be found in one of the lists (except for the fabled four hour...you know.)And the source list encompasses pretty much everything you have in your house, car, kitchen, and refrigerator. So if you're living a relatively typical life, face it...you're toast. And toast is on the list too if you're toast with white bread.

Getting into parts 2 and 3, you start to learn what you can do to clean up the damage already in your body, as well as stave off additional problems. There's less gloom and doom here, but you could go crazy and broke trying to do everything listed. There are the typical vitamins and minerals, as well as a number of foods that have healthy properties. But then you start getting into what I would call esoteric things like rhodiola rosea, wild lettuce extract, grape extract, pectin, NADH, etc.I'm sure your local health food store will just LOVE you!And pretty much everything has to be organic, as that seems to be the only way to "guarantee" the food is healthy for you.But I couldn't help wondering...do you trust the "organic" label thrown on stuff these days? (I'm cynical.)And if the environment is already so polluted with mercury, lead, and other nasties, then aren't the "organic" foods sucking up those same things as part of their growth?Granted, probably less so than pesticide-laden crops, but I don't think we're talking black and white extremes here.It seems as if it's more a spectrum of grey...

There's much to be said for Cook's information and general approach. If you made the effort to eat and supplement as she directs, you would definitely live longer and probably eliminate some physical ailments you have. But I don't think I want to have my monthly paycheck direct deposited at the health food store, nor do I want to agonize over every last piece of fruit I pick up.The value I see here is to raise your awareness of how the brain is affected by food and chemical exposure, and give you the information you need to make potential changes as you see necessary. But like many radical dietary changes, I don't hold out much hope of long-term sustainability when the average person can't even stay on a basic diet and lose weight... myself included. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for caregivers and family members
The Q & A /interview writing style approach was great. I learned a great deal about redirecting and how to reduce the likelihood of my godmother becoming agitated or violent. It is comforting to know that her exhibited behavior is not atypical. The soundest piece of advice I learned was that it is normal for demented people to act dementedly. To expect them to act rationally is, well, irrational.

4-0 out of 5 stars Coping with Alzheimer'sA Caregivers Emotional Survival Guide
This book was very helpful and took away a lot of the fuilt feelings that go with looking after someone with Alzheimer's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compassionate Reality
This book is the best that I've seen or read for caregivers. It really puts things in perspective and offers useable solutions. I've read it so much it fell apart. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a love one with Alzheimer's. It would also be helpful for friends and loved ones other than the caregiver. Thumbs Up. A Big Thank You to the Author's.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must for spouses and children
This book addresses most of the emotional issues for spousal and chilren who caregive someone with dementia. It shows how you can think your way out of the deep hole you put yourself in while caring for your loved one. Change your thinking and you will automatically make things better for both you and your whole family. Buy this book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars for the caregiver
so many books out there focus on the person with alzheimers and very few address the caregiver adequately. My ailing mother is caring for my father and her inability to do a good job was fodder for all sorts of of emotional issues - she needed more than a small chapter in the back of a book. This book was wonderful and validated all her feelings and let her know she was not alone.Too bad it's so difficult to find.It has a question and answer format with questions like "I feel so bad when I yell at him for not remembering.I know he's sick but I just get so frustrated! What can I do?".Practical, useful, and true to life. ... In this volume, investigators shed light on the relationship of nutrition to the aging process, the specific nutrient needs of the elderly, and the role of nutrition in preventing geriatric diseases. The book begins with overviews of the health statistics and eating habits of older people. The contributors then describe age-related changes in renal, endocrine, and gastorintestinal function, energy metabolism, taste and odor perception, and immune responses, and relate these physiological changes to nutritional status. Product Description
As medicine continues to increase longevity, it becomes more and more vital for us all to keep the mind healthy and vigorous.

As a cofounder and director of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, Dr. Robert Goldman has at his fingertips all of the latest scientific research on what each of us can do not only to retain all our mental powers as long as we live but also to actually strengthen and improve our mind-power as we age.

Now he shares that information, in a layperson's terms, with numerous self-tests, information charts, and quizzes, so that we all can improve memory, sharpen concentration, reduce stress, learn to sleep better, and--above all--ward off the devastation of Alzheimer's disease.

Goldman discusses the many nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals, and medications that have been proved to enhance mental fitness, providing specific doses and regimens. But beyond that, he also describes particular exercises and lifestyle techniques designed to sharpen mental acuity.

As medicine continues to increase longevity, and it becomes more vital for us all to keep the mind healthy and vigorous, Brain Fitness is destined to become our bible for the new millennium.Amazon.com Review
Robert Goldman holds a Ph.D. in steroid biochemistry, foundedthe National Academy of Sports Medicine, and is an adviser to theJournal of Longevity Research. In Brain Fitness, hemakes a valid point that's been proven by recent studies: yourbrainpower, like the muscles of your body, can be expanded throughexercise. And with the life expectancy of humans nearly doubling inthe past century, he says, paying attention to your cognitive skillsand taking steps to ward off Alzheimer's is becoming more and morevital.

Through various self-quizzes, charts, and self-tests,Brain Fitness helps you determine what state your brain is innow--and helps you boost your memory power accordingly. Some of theinformation is surprising (such as that over-the-counter painkillerslike ibuprofen have been shown to inhibit brain function and memorywith long-term use). Some other parts, such as the section on howchronic stress can inhibit your health, has shown up in all of thenumerous anti-aging books of late. But for baby boomers interested inlearning about what the aging process is doing to their memories--andwhat they can do to boost their brain power--Brain Fitness is agood place to start. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good reference book on the subject
The book quality is somewhat erratic from chapter to chapter. But, there is a lot of valuable information in it.This is especially true regarding all the micro nutrients, vitamins, herbal supplements that are good to maintain your cognitive skills.Through the years I find myself referring to this book very often.Although the book was written a few years ago, it appears very current.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fellow physician/"brain-author" agrees with premise of this.
As more and more research suggests, there are ways that, by altering your lifestyle and intake, as well as your basic brain activity, you can possibly curtail what we traditionally think of as an"inevitable" aging process of the brain and its function. Dr.Goldman reviews many of these tools available, a number of which in fact,(despite other reviewer comments to the contrary), DO have peer-reviewedscientific studies to back them up.May I suggest "The Care andFeeding of Your Brain" as a companion guide to Goldman's book toprovide another perspective on how you can affect brain aging, and for amore general view of brain optimization right now, before aging...Mycongratulations to Dr. Goldman and colleagues on a book well done and easyto read!...All the best...Kenneth Giuffre'MD, author, "The Care andFeeding of Your Brain"

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, discouraging, and mildly offensive
The author needs to determine who his audience is.The book seems to be aimed at young people seeking to achieve and maintain 'super mind power'.The title (anti-aging) appeals to those of us who are experiencing 'brainfog' and want it to stop. While the tests will confirm or rebut oursuspicions that something is wrong, the author suggests only the same-oldhome remedies - diet, vitamins and herbs, destress - that I have been usingfor years already. The mental excersizes are a bad joke - things I used tolove doing when my mind was functional are now proposed as excersizes -which I couldn't do if my life depended upon it. There is nothingsuggested in the way of medical treatment or what to tell a doctor toconvince them that 'something is wrong'.Many things I have read about, found to be helpful and consider somewhat more cutting-edge - like oxygentherapy or the debate regarding the danger in dental fillings - are noteven mentioned.Human growth hormone is dismissed in one sentance. If Ibelieved this book, I would give up all hope.

1-0 out of 5 stars You need cognitive enhancement if you accept this.
This book has value. It will test your IQ. If you accept it as authoritative on cognition and memory, then you may need cognitive enhancement. It appears to be more for ego enhancement. Look for theauthror's contributions to the field in peer-reviewed journals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely educational and informational!
This book completely changed the way I looked at nutrition for the brain. It really makes you re-think your view on your personal self and lets you know that you are capable of so much more than what you're doing. Dr.Goldman did an outstanding job relating his personal goals and the goals ofother prominent people is society. He brings to life the realities of"famous people are just like ordinary people." This bookdefinitely changed the way I look at growing old.Age is inevitable, butaging is not. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Insight Into The Caregiver's Journey
You see chapter headings like: Accepting the Diagnosis, Beginning to Cope, Finding Support, Achieving Compassion, and Questions and Answers about Alzheimer's.My expectations were then for a factual book dealing with the emotional issues of the disease. It was a shock to open the pages and see the poetry format.
These might make good discussion starters for an Alzheimer's support group.Topics like grief or anger make the reader think about their reaction to the changes going on.
Probably I'd have given this more stars if the cover had prepared me for what was inside. ... Read more
