5-0 out of 5 stars Nodding my head in agreement
My wife was diagnosed last year with AD at age 63.Within months after the diagnosis I had read several books, joined a support group, and gone online at several sights to read and post comments on message boards. One of the things I find comforting as I now go through life as a spouse/caregiver of someone with AD is knowing that others have gone before me down the same or similar road ... that others have dealt successfully with some of the same challenges I am now facing. While reading the stories presented by Lisa Snyder ... both in the words of the people with Alzheimer's and in the words of the author ... I found myself often nodding my head in agreement and acknowledgment.I understood where these seven people were 'coming from' ... and the insights provided by the author were right on target. Most of all, I enjoyed the conversational style of the author ... I felt as if she and I were sitting together in my living room and she was talking with me as she related these stories. Both informative and empathetic, this book also clearly demonstrates how each person with AD is unique ... despite many similarities regarding memory loss and other common AD symptoms, each person with AD truly follows a different path.At times I found myself hoping that my wife would not take the paths of some of those described in this book, but yet there is also much benefit to knowing some of the possibilities that may be around the corner. The effects of this horrible disease, the challenges as the disease worsens, and yet also the hope and tender moments that can remain for a long time despite worsening symptoms, are all told through the honest words of those who are living through these daily experiences.I recommend this book highly for spouses, caregivers, and others closely involved with people with Alzheimer's.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT
This is a wonderful book from the perspective people suffering from Alzheimer's disease.I highly recommend this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this first
This book is an easy yet insightful read that looks at the changes and roles facing those who care for loved ones with Alzheimer's. Not every chapter will apply to your situation, but this a valuable introduction that informers without overwhelming.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anecdotes from the words of Diagnosed ALZ people
Being recently dianosed with CRS, see my review of Shenk's "The Forgetting," I want to know from others who have been there, what is ahead of me. I am a member of two ALZ support groups, one mixed, and one for ALZers by themselves. Recently at a social party where I was experiencing data overload, I confided to a woman of my own age, that I was diagnosed with ALZ.She immediately said she was also, and we immediately began comparing symptoms, just as other ALZers do when their caregivers are not around!
This book fullfills my needs for the stories from those who are there. No story fits me exactly, yet parts of each show me that I am not unique, that I need not fit the popular mold, e.g. "Iris," of where and who I am.Just as the 42 stories at the rear of "Alcoholics Anonymous" give understanding and light to those afflicted with another incurable pathology, so do these bring hope and understanding to me:"I Am Not Alone!"
There is an abundance of tomes dealing with the diagnosis and care of ALZers. Those few books which let one ALZ speak to another ALZ are far between. ["Living in the Labyrinth" by McGowan is another in this small select company.]
If you, a friend, or a relative has ever been given a tentative or conclusive diagnosis of ALZ, run, don't walk, to get a copy of "Speaking Our Minds" to them.If like me, their reading capabilities have substantially deteriiorated, please, please read it to them!

A revolutionary new approach to diagnose, treat, and delay the onset of the progression of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders.

One out of every two families in the United States has a member with Alzheimer's or a related disease. Using their "Shankle-Amen Dementia Screening Test" in conjunction with medication, supplements, and physical exercise, Dr. Shankle and Dr. Amen have developed a program to prevent, delay, detect, and possibly halt Alzheimer's disease. The plan, combined with Dr. Amen's revolutionary brain-imaging techniques (which allow physicians and patients to monitor the workings of an individual's brain and the effects of treatment), will teach readers to employ early detection screening tools and early intervention strategies to delay the onset and progression of Alzheimer's disease as well as other forms of dementia. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for information
I have not read the whole book but what I have read seems very informative and detailed.
I am glad that I bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative
Interesting information is provided on Alzheimer's and other types of dementia.Although some information is rather technical, there is a great deal of information for the average person. An included glossary of terms is very helpful in understanding the material presented. One of the main points made is the importance of early treatment for this condition. With early diagnosis and treatment the progression of Alzheimer's can be delayed. Also, new treatments for Alzheimer's and other dementia will be available in the near future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Preventing Alzheimer's
"Preventing Alzheimer's" is the best informational book on the subject I have read. Dr. Daniel Amen is one of the foremost authorities in the world for neurological diseases. This book covers everything from a comprehensive explanation of just what Alzheimer's disease is to foods and medications that affect the symptoms, both good and bad. It explains testing for the different types of Alzheimer's and goes into preventative measures that can be taken to delay the symptoms of Alzheimer's. It gives hope for the future for the people who have the Alzheimer's gene. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is dealing with this devastating disease, whether caregiver or patient with early symptoms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional, Caring, Personal Help to Ease Guilt & Fear
This is the most useful, warm, and accurate book I've read on the painful subject of caring for your loved one (spouse, relative, friend) who islosing their unique humanity to Alzheimer's. It is not cold and clinical, but touches the heart with joyfulness, deep understanding, and compassion. Most of all, it details, point-by-point, the signs of Alzheimer's and theemotionally difficult steps necessary to care for such individuals. It isnot a "New Age" feel-good book full of rambling cute stories, buta highly readable book that focuses on specific and reality. The author hasa lifetime of professional experience and credentials, and is supported bycountless favorable reviews by other eminent professionals in all areas ofexpertise. This is THE book for average people and even for otherprofessionals who want to understand and deal with one of the realities ofgrowing old. It doesn't offer fantasies or pie-in-the sky cures, but itdoes offer hope that both you and your loved one can go on living the most"quality" life possible. I brought the book with me to Asia andEurope, and despite the huge differences in cultures, it was verywell-received and considered extremely useful by the suffering children ofAlzheimer's patients.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended
This book seemed to be written to promote the services of Geriatric Care Managers, with all of the anecdotes and suggestions tailored to that end. "I did this" and "I did that" comments abound. It wouldbe of no use to anyone outside the USA, and possibly no use to people inthe US either. Try Gruetzner's book or "Person to person" or"The 36 hour day" instead. ... Read more

Product Description
Winner of the 2002 BMA Popular Medicine Book Prize: This is a haunting literary and scientific examination of Alzheimer's disease and the race to find a cure.'A truly remarkable book -- the definitive work on Alzheimer's, both in social and medical terms, "The Forgetting" is incisive, humane, never ponderous, full of dry humour and brilliantly written with quiet, unpretentious authority. As a layman with personal experience of "caring" for an Alzheimer's sufferer I am well aware of the stages of the disease and its prognosis and ending. Shenk is excellent on all these, and in his reflections on memory and the individual, and the individual's response to the progress of the disease. I can't imagine a book on Alzheimer's being better researched and understood, or presented with greater sympathy.' John BayleyIn 1906 Alois Alzheimer dissected and examined the cerebral cortex of Auguste D's brain and became the first scientist in medical history to link a specific brain pathology to behavioural changes. The disease named after him, turns otherwise active and healthy people into living ghosts. It is a rare condition for those in their 40s and 50s but 10% of the 65+ population suffers from it and 50% of the 85+. It is longevity's revenge and as the baby boom generation drifts into its elderly years the number of Alzheimer's victims is expected to quadruple, making it the fastest-growing disease in developed countries. As Adam Phillips writes in his foreword 'This remarkable book will radically change our notions of looking after people and our assumptions about independence. Out of fear of mortality we have idealised health and youth and competence. "The Forgetting" reminds us among many other things that there is more to life than that.'Shenk's history of Alzheimer's is both poignant and scientific, grounded by the fundamental belief that memory forms the basis of our selves, our souls, and the meaning in our lives.Amazon.com Review
First attracted to his subject by its horrific ability to destroy the human mind and body, journalist David Shenk ultimately finds reasons to accept Alzheimer's disease--and almost forgive it--in The Forgetting. Shenk describes his work as a biography, the life story of a biological outlaw that sends victims "on a slow but certain trajectory toward forgetting and death." But his illuminating portrait of this growing epidemic offers more than a basic chronology. Shenk begins with the disease's christening in 1906, when German physician Alois Alzheimer discovered mysterious tangles and plaques in the brain of a dead woman who in life had suffered severe memory loss and dementia. The tale unfolds to reveal a host of intriguing players: struggling scientists (the clever, the bullheaded, and the pharmaceutically endowed), politicians divided by opposing priorities, exhausted caregivers, and patients whose biological clocks virtually tick backward over an average eight-year period. It includes impossible twists: longer life expectancies and successful treatments for other diseases mean more cases of Alzheimer's will inevitably occur. Shenk's graceful synthesis of personal accounts (from Plato to Reagan) with a century-long search for answers and cures leads him to an impressive conclusion. Perhaps Alzheimer's disease is much like winter: "Once it is gone, we'll face less hardship, but we'll also have lost an important lens on life." --Liane Thomas ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Writing and Information for someone caring for their Mom
I was devastated when I learned my Mom had Alzheimer's. She was a very young 82 and healthy as could be, except for her brain. I didn't have a clue what to think, expect, or plan for in her future.

After reading "The Forgetting," I felt well-prepared for what was to come and referred to it often as my Mom's disease progressed.

It was invaluable to know that Mom's agitation and behaviors were common to the disease, not a change in her own personality but view from the other side of Alzheimer's.

If you have a family or friend with Alzheimer's, this book will give you depth and meaning to what they will endure.

I loved it,,,and still read it on occasion even since my Mom passed away 3 years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Forgetting" is one to fill your mind with knowledge, hope, and insight.
The author does an extraordinary job painting the complex details about Alzheimer's into a portrait that can be easily accessible to the general audience.I've learned many fascinating things through this book. After finishing this book, I have migrated from believing that Alzheimer's is a horrible, dreaded disease to one with a sense of appreciation for the inevitable things in life. Shenk quoted in his book, ""Babies are born with no memory. They gather memories as they grow. As they get old they lose these memories so they can be reborn again in void."

5-0 out of 5 stars The Classic Text on Alzheimer's

This is the classic text on Alzheimer's. It's almost a decade old, but reads like it was written yesterday. Shenk tells us how the disease was discovered, how it develops in the brain and how it plays out in the daily lives of patients.

I read this within a month of my father's diagnosis of advanced second stage dementia, and I've never been so comforted by a book. Even now, a few years later, I occasionally take "The Forgetting" down from the shelf and hold it. I read a few pages. I feel secure with it, I'm in the hands of a skilled, trustworthy and empathic writer.

Reading the book the first time, I was electrified to recognize in my father almost every symptom Shenk described. At the same time I was soothed, because I understood that it wasn't my father who was so bizarre, it was the disease playing out in his hippocampus, amygdala and temporal lobes. To me it was a relief to know that his brain was going bad in an entirely common way: that he was not, if you will, a strange human being, but entirely normal for a patient with Alzheimer's.

David Shenk is the ideal journalist, sympathetic without the least hint of sentimentality. His prose is perfectly crafted, never an awkward sentence, with a perfect balance of exposition and narrative. That is, he gives us technical explanations about the disease, but we're never far from the stories of a lively set of characters. We hear about Frau Auguste D., the original dementia patient of Alois Alzheimer, and Ronald Reagan, and Ralph Waldo Emerson and Jonathan Swift, two writers who suffered extreme memory loss and the inability to make sense of even the words they'd written themself. It's a richly peopled world, and Shenk makes it clear that this is a timeless disease, one that has been with us always.

I was surprised by the Acknowledgments section of the book, which goes on for three full pages and names a hundred people. You can see there how much research went into the book. But while reading it, I felt as if Shenk had sat down and typed it out without the least effort. Like a great athlete, he makes the job look effortless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Expanding the understanding of Alzheimer Disease
THE FORGETTING is an exceptional book on the subject of Alzheimer's. One follows the historical biography of this disease through lucid and engaging writing, with much anecdotal evidence of its' effects upon prominent persons, like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Willem de Kooning. The author offers ways of understanding the disease that include perceptions of some actual sufferers who, themselves, offer their insights. Having read several books on this topic, this is the one I pass along to others as a valuable book to expand one's understanding about Alzheimer's, while being eminently readable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Alzheimer's:Portrait of an Epidemic
I purchased this book after seeing it described as "remarkable" by Oliver Sacks, in his own book "Musicophilia". I gave the book to a friend, whose husband is sadly, suffering the early signs of probable Alzheimer's disease, but as a retired surgeon, with only a rudimentary knowledge of the medical aspects of the condition myself, I was also interested to read it first. For some reason, I found the introductory passages of the book a little dense, but thereafter, it was thoroughly engaging and enlightening. In particular, the book struck a nice balance between explaining the known microscopic biological details of the illness, and practical aspects that might help a relative or care-giver come to terms with the condition on a daily basis.Examples of the experience and behaviour of well-known historic figures who probably had Alzheimer's helped to emphasise the unselective nature of the illness, and the potentially depressing aspects of the course of the disease were treated with great sensitivity.Overall, I thought it was excellent. My friend (who is non-medical), has found it to be very informative and in many ways reassuring, in her attempt to understand what is happening to her husband. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Potential Time Killer
In my opinion, many of the mental exercises suggested in Brain Builders fit into the absurd category.Yet there is much of interest.I don't know if any of these exercises will actually improve the brain, or reduce the risk of becoming demented, but many people think so.If you have plenty time to spare, this book may be helpful. But as for this 71 year old man, I'm going to exercise my brain by earning money.

Product Description
Receiving a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease profoundly alters lives and creates endless uncertainty about the future. How does a person cope with such a life-changing discovery? What are the hopes and fears of someone living with this disease? How does he want to be treated? How does he feel as the disease alters his brain, his relationships, and ultimately himself?

Richard Taylor provides illuminating responses to these and many other questions in this collection of provocative essays. Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease at age 61, the former psychologist courageously shares an account of his slow transformation and deterioration and the growing division between his world and the world of others.

With poignant clarity, candor, and even occasional humor, more than 80 brief essays address difficult issues faced by those with Alzheimer’s disease, including
• the loss of independence and personhood
• unwanted personality shifts
• communication difficulties
• changes in relationships with loved ones and friends
• the declining ability to perform familiar tasks

This rare, insightful exploration into the world of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease is a captivating read for anyone affected personally or professionally by the devastating disease. Individuals with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease will take comfort in the voice of a fellow traveler experiencing similar challenges, frustrations, and triumphs. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I've read many books about Alzheimer's.This one is the very best.Dr. Taylor is articulate and introspective and provides amazing insights into the daily struggles of living with this disease. It's a must read for all caregivers and for patients in the early stages of the disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Read
This is an excellent book to help those of us who have a loved one with Alzheimers better understand the thoughts, feelings, concerns and fears of a person dealing with the disease. We need to have so much compassion for the victims of this disease.Wonderful book!

5-0 out of 5 stars wow
This is probably one the best books I've read, and I read a lot.My mother recently died of complications of Alzheimers. This book reflects many of the struggles she talked to me about including how to retain her sense of self and some feelings of competency.I appreciate his emphasis that everyone's experience with dementia is different and this book presents his experience. I was dazzled by the books simplicity and glad to get a preview of some of the things I need to think about for myself and my husband. In the old days there was little literature from a cancer patient's perspective. Now there's a plethora of books by cancer survivors. The nature of Alheimers makes it less likely that there will be a glut of well crafted books providing the perspective of those suffering from the disease.Kudos to this author for taking it on and doing the delicate balancing act of performing while having a disease that impacts performing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative Book
My Mother has Alzheimer's and this book was very helpful in helping me to understand how she sees and thinks about things. She isn't able to tell me what is going on in her mind at all.I learn the most when I listen to her talk to herself in the mirror. But this book, written by someone who actually was documenting how things were feeling to him, was very helpful.I have been able to get closer to my Mother now.I picked up several ideas on how to communicate with her since reading the book. This has been one of the most helpful books on Alzheimer's I have read.Another book that I really liked is "Still Alice."

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This book points out that people have feelings even when sick.I think that is great since so many people treat loved ones with memory problems with disrespect. ... Read more
