4-0 out of 5 stars A Key To Understanding African-American History
This book chronicles the strivings of blacks from Reconstruction to present day. It breaks up the chapters into the different time periods in American history. Each chapter is filled with essay and documents that futher explain black life. The many articles are insightful and allow one to jump back to the time period. It also deals with many of the black leaders ideologies. This book is for any person who enjoys history and is interested in the long and obstacle-filled past of black Americans.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Beginning for Understanding African American History
Thorough, detailed, and not monotonous, this is a book that I would recommend for anyone who wants to learn about African-American history, not hust through the eyes of scholars and professors, but through those who had had direct contact with the changes in African-American society. I would strongly urge those who want to learn more about African-American history to begin right here. ... Read more

Book Description
AMERICAN PASSAGES places a unique emphasis on cause and effect relationships over time, allowing students to in a complete, compelling narrative. Rather than categorizing facets of historical change into ahistorical abstractions, such as "themes" or "topics", AMERICAN PASSAGES emphasizes the intertwined nature of three key characteristics of time ¿ sequence, simultaneity, and contingency. With an unparalleled sense of clarity and purpose, the authors convey how events grow from other events, people's actions, and broad structural changes (sequence), how apparently disconnected events occurred in close chronological proximity to one another and were situated in larger, shared contexts (simultaneity), and how history suddenly pivoted because of events, personalities, and unexpected outcomes (contingency). To further highlight this unique framework, this text includes two new essay features. "Flashpoints" take a closer look at pivotal events specific to a given time and place. These events emphasize contingency and show students how key events, personal decisions have influenced historical outcomes over time. The "Enduring Issues" feature traces topics across time to emphasize how recurring patterns appear in different forms as time changes the context. Both features help students understand the historical significance of pivotal events and recurring patterns over time. By grasping these concepts, students can better apply historical lessons to their own lives.AMERICAN PASSAGES is available in the following splits: *AMERICAN PASSAGES, Comprehensive, Third Edition (Chapters 1-32) ISBN: 0495050156; *AMERICAN PASSAGES, Volume I: To 1877, Third Edition (Chapters 1-16) ISBN: 0495050628; *American Passages, Volume II: Since 1863, Third Edition (Chapters 15-32) ISBN: 0495050636. ... Book Description

Incorporating the basic features and narrative from The African-American Odyssey, this concise history presents its major episodes, issues, and people. It tells a compelling story of survival, struggle, and triumph over adversity–leaving readers with an appreciation of the central place of black people and culture in this country, and a better understanding of both African-American and American history. The 2nd edition presents a broadened international perspective, offers expanded coverage of interaction among African-Americans and other ethnic groups, and includes additional material on African-Americans in the western portion of the United States. It describes African-American history from its African origins to the sixteenth century and the beginning of the forced migration of millions of Africans to the Americas. Succeeding chapters present the struggle of black people to maintain their humanity during the slave trade and as slaves in North America during the long colonial period. It continues through the Civil War and the beginning of Reconstruction. This is a compelling story of survival, struggle, and triumph over adversity. Readers will learn an appreciation of the central place of black people and black culture in this country, and a better understanding of both African-American and American history.

From its first edition, this text has included a scrupulous account of American political and diplomatic history. 5-0 out of 5 stars American History
This book was used when i bought it but when i received it, it was like brand new everything page in perfect condition. I used the book for my history class and passed with a "B". Thanks Alan Brinkley...LOL :-)

2-0 out of 5 stars Dull, at its best.
This past year, I have had to use this edition of the Brinkster's text for an honors-level American History I course. From week one, the instructor was as uninspired and incoherent as The Godfather Part III, so I knew I would have to use the textbook if I wanted to learn anything. American History: A Survey presents an unbiased account of the nation's adventure through time, but in its successful attempt to remain neutral, it comes off as bland as a rice cake. The Prime Source Investigator CD features some nice flashcards and quizzes, but the text itself is perhaps more boring than Warhol's film Empire.A friend of mine recommended The American Pageant, and after reading a few chapters of it, I've decided to plunk down the cash for a more engaging read.

5-0 out of 5 stars School book

1-0 out of 5 stars Focused on All the Wrong Aspects
We use this book for AP U.S. History and I have to say, it must be the most dull and uninteresting textbook I have ever had the displeasure of reading. It provides a lot of information all right...there's plenty of text, text, and more text. However, the text focuses entirely on all of the wrong parts of U.S. History. The AP exam is broken down into 40% political and economic, 40% social, and 20% other stuff, such as arts and such. This book, instead, is broken into approximately 95% social, 4% political and economic, and 1% other. It's absolutely ludicrous. What's more, a large majority of this social history is on women's history. Despite the fact that women played a role in American history, it is absolutely ridiculous that Brinkley places more emphasis on women in American history than anything else. He gives little focus onto the rise of the technologies of the Industrial or Modern eras, the American imperialism, or anything that really matters for that matter. He doesn't give any impression that the world was in danger from the Axis forces during World War II. In fact, he is so preoccupied with the rise of women that there is almost no mention of anything important that the United States did on a global scale during the 20th century. If you enjoy women's history, then this is definitely the right book for you. If you're looking for a well-balanced textbook that provides a scope on ALL aspects of American history, save yourself the money and use a different book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Text
I bought this book for an American History course at college. I enjoy the expanded sections on 'Where Historians Disagree', with analysis of different points of view on a given subject. There are also added pages for the impact on / roles of women in American history. Since they reissue this series every few years, I'm sure it will only expand and improve, but it is a great starter text for anyone interested in American History from 'discovery' to today. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Textbook I've Ever Read Cover to Cover
It may seem dorky to read a textbook cover to cover but that's what history students at my old high school do every year with Alan Brinkley's, "American History: A Survey." It is engaging, scholarly, fascinating, and thorough. For an extensive study and understanding of American History, Brinkley's work is a must. It is fairly unbiased and is noted as one of the "most-readable" history texts. I can't agree more. It took me a course and a year of study but thanks to Alan Brinkley and an amazing teacher, I have extensive knowledge of American History and it's impact on the modern world. ... Read more

Book Description
Featuring National Geographic's hallmark combination of stunning images, superb maps, authoritative narrative, and concise, penetrating analysis, the Almanac of American History has been carefully designed to offer its readers not just a wider and deeper understanding of our country's development, but also an inviting mix of fascinating facts and colorful graphics that make it a browser's delight.

After the Introduction by respected historian Hugh Ambrose and a special feature on how to use the Almanac's features most efficiently, the book is divided into four major parts, each exploring a different aspect of America's history. The first explores the continent's geology and geography to answer the fundamental question of how the vast, rich landscape shaped both our expanding society and our sense of ourselves. In Section 2, Milestones, twelve essays discuss how America evolved from a sparsely settled wilderness into the global leader it is today. Section 3 covers the major eras in America's history, beginning with the earliest Native Americans and closing with the first decade of a new millennium. Finally, a thematically organized section discusses such important topics asLeaders, Wars, Religion and Beliefs, and Presidents. An appendix features Milestone Documents, including the Declaration of Independence, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address, and more. A bibliography and a comprehensive index complete this indispensable reference. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Choppily written
This book seems to have been written to run about 500 pages before it was cut down to its final length of 338 pages. many of the sections I've read have been difficult to truly understand--sometimes the authors makes claims that need more explanation, and other times the sentences or paragraphs seem to be non sequitors. Great images, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific American history refresher
For adults who either loved or hated American history in high school and college, this is an excellent review.A well organized format starts as a general overview of progressive periods, and follows up with a more specific description of each era.Every section features maps or art representative of the period. All in all, this book displays the excellence we have come to expect of National Geographic.

For your Information the Big Bang is a proven scientific theory. And I suppose you think god created the universeand made the earth in 6 days right.

The Book has numerous illustrations and a detailed account of world history, although it can be vague at times.

4-0 out of 5 stars National Geographic Almanac of American History (National Geographic)
I think this book a well written consist summary of American history. The reason I did not rate it 5 stars is because of the opening statement on page 14. This book, backed by National Geographic, states that the world we live in was created by a "big bang" 15 billions ago. This is not a proven fact. This is one man's idea. I am surprised that National Geographic accepts this as a proven fact and gives this book their stamp of approval. It has lowered my opinion of a life long trusted name.

4-0 out of 5 stars missed opportunities for civil rights
This long running text is now in its 19th edition. Impressive pedigree. The book consists of several page excerpts of noteworthy events spanning over a century. There is a conscious echo of today in the chapter of the 1871 War on Terror. An effort by the federal government to crush the Ku Klux Klan. The Al Qaeda of its time. This chapter may be the most interesting of the book. There is a sense of cognitive dissonance when reading it. The author draws explicit parallels to the terrorist organisations of our time. Including describing apologists who saw the KKK as freedom fighters.

But another tragic quirk is how history took a wrong turn. We see Negro legislators as full equals of the whites, and advocating that the federal government protect the basic human rights of terrorised Negroes. What if the government had successfully done so? Civil rights could have been advanced some 90 years earlier. Reading the chapter gives a terrible sense of missed opportunities. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The evolution of western warfare
Doughty's book covers exactly what it says. It provides a good overview of American military history beginning basically with the colonists' battles with Native Americans. This book really shines in its discussion of the technology behind warfare and how it affected key battles. For example, its sections on the technology of World War I (machine gun, plane and tank) are carried through when discussing World War II. I felt the authors did a good job of trying to create a logical flow of progression. Though I'm not sure if killing more people faster is "progress" but I digress.

There are also smaller sections on important military commanders. The authors also have no problem calling a spade a spade and telling the reader who did a bad job. And based on the Civil War section lots of people did lots of bad jobs.

There are, obviously, more in-depth studies of all the military actions and technology discussed in the book. But the importance of the book is to tie all of these facets together and create a larger view of American military history. Overall, the book did a good job creating a sense of evolution of western warfare.

This is one of the classic textbooks for college classes on Native American history. The book is appropriate for either an introductory class on Native American history, or a more advanced class. The book covers the major topics of importance to both natives and non-natives over the course of 1700s, 1800s, and 1900s, such as tribal rights, gaming, Bureau of Indian affairs, treaties, schooling of native children, and compensation to Native Americans. The book is divided into major sections that cover the history of native - non-native relations in the US and in the land that eventually became the US.There is minimal mention of native americans in Mexico or Canada.Overall, a decent book, though I would get the newer edition. The second editor of this book, Peter Iverson, teaches at my university, Arizona State University, and is one of the most often-recognized teachers at this school. ... Book Description

Contrary to conventional wisdom, no area of study is outdated more quickly than history, and no time has been more turbulent for the discipline than our own. This classic point/counterpoint reader in American history, now in a completely revised and updated seventh edition, takes note of history's impermanence, giving voice to the new without disposing of the old.

In ten lively chapters, essays by the editors introduce dialectical readings by distinguished historians on topics from Reconstruction to the present. The essays and readings address history's timeless questions: "Reconstruction: Change or Stasis?," "American Imperialism: Economic Expansion or Ideological Crusade?," and "The Civil Rights Movement: Top-Down or Bottom-Up?" New readings are included on African Americans, women, and immigrants. In the fray of debate, eminent historians from Samuel Hays and Alfred Chandler to John Lewis Gaddis, Walter LaFeber, and Kathryn Kish Sklar struggle to interpret the past.

The editors'essays moderate the passionate arguments and offer a clear, distanced vision of the changing character of history. They explain how history has usually been viewed through the lens of the present and demonstrate with sparkling historiography that the discipline is as contemporary as the headlines of today, as vital as the problems of tomorrow. ... Book Description
Revised and expanded in this third edition, American Legal History now features a new coauthor, James Ely, who is a specialist in the history of property rights. This highly acclaimed text provides a comprehensive selection of the most important documents in the field, which integrates the history of public and private law from America's colonial origins to the present. Devoting special attention to the interaction of social and legal change, it shows how legal ideas developed in tandem with specific historical events and reveals a rich legal culture unique to America. The book also deals with state and federal courts and looks at the relationship between the development of American society, politics, and economy, and how it relates to the evolution of American law. Introductions and instructive headnotes accompany each document, tying legal developments to broader historical themes and providing a social and political context essential to an understanding of the history of law in America.American Legal History, Third Edition, offers fresh material throughout and increased coverage of cases on such topics as slave law, politics, and terrorism. The authors have incorporated more cases dealing with minority rights, including Native American and Asian American rights, women's rights, and gender and gay rights. Two new chapters have been added to this edition: one on law and economics in modern America, including a discussion of the new federalism, and the other on law, politics, and terrorism, including a full discussion of the USA PATRIOT Act. The "since 1945" portion includes up-to-date material and current cases. The section on English background and colonial America has been expanded. In addition, there is new material on the most recent developments in American constitutional and legal history. Setting the legal challenges of the twenty-first century in a broad context, American Legal History, Third Edition, is an essential text for students and teachers of constitutional and legal history, the judicial process, and the effects of society on law. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Dred Scott Returns
Many people reading this book will be law students, but even for those who aren't, Kermit Hall's collection is a terrific resource for readers of history and politics. In a real sense, if you're looking for a "road map" to see how America got to where it is, the "legal" history in many respects trumps military, political and economic histories. Here you'll find ll the usual suspects - Magna Charta, the Glorious Revolution of 1688, the Colonial Charters, the American Revolution, Dred Scott, Griswald, Miranda, Roe v. Wade. Expect the next edition to carry Bush v. Gore.

4-0 out of 5 stars greatest hits of the law
This is a terrific book.I use it for teaching Law & Public Policy to political science masters students. The authors have done a great job winnowing the dusty tomes of legal history to the essential nuggets. In addition to the classics, they've selected some hilarious "voice of the people" sources one might never come across in standard legal history texts.I really enjoy this book! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Dumbed down for production line educators
If the book was meant to provide a quick overview of American history as a two week long introduction to more profound study it would rate 5 stars. But this book is being used as a textbook to present the totality of American history to high school students.I've read the book and talked to educators who are using it to teach American history. It is being misused as a textbook. Some are saying this is THE book to use for teaching American history. That's like saying all the news worth knowing can be found in USA Today. The 3 stars is for the trend this book represents.Otherwise, it may be OK if applied properly as a sparse intro to American history.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an easy & quick book for all history students.
This book makes history easy for kids and adults of all ages. The text is simple and easy to understand. Side questions help you understand topics, and it won't bore you (too much) with long-winded text. great for studying, all though it isn't suited for the incredable detailed test. Catches you up or renews your interest in the history of our country. ... Read more
