Product Description

From the early colonial period to the close of World War II, life in North America was predominantly agrarian and rural. Archaeological exploration of farmsteads unveils a surprising quantity of data about rural life, consumption patterns, and migrations across the continent.

Mark Groover offers both case studies and an overview of current trends in farmstead archaeology in this exciting new work. He also proposes a research design and makes numerous suggestions for evaluating (and re-evaluating) the significance of farmsteads as an archaeological resource. His chronological survey of farmstead sites throughout numerous regions of North America provides fascinating insights to students, cultural resource management professionals, or general readers interested in learning more about what material culture remains can teach us about the American past.

Farmstead archaeology is a rapidly expanding component of historical archaeology. This book offers important lessons and information as more sites become victims of ever-accelerating development and urbanization.

Product Description
This is the first volume in an important new series that will cover the historical sites of all 27 governorates of Egypt. It presents a comprehensive study of 126 archaeological sites located within the geographic boundaries of Sharqiya Governorate in Egyptâs Nile Delta. The work is based upon and retrieved from the Geographic Information System (GIS) and the database that were created through the Egyptian Antiquities Information System (EAIS) project in the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA). The objective of the project is to develop a comprehensive official documentation of historical sites in all the governorates of Egypt, and consequently to provide realistic and coherent site information that will be indispensable not only to archaeologists and researchers but also to governmental agencies, which can use the information in protecting and managing the sites. The first part of the volume, in paper book format, contains introductory manuals, attribute tables of all sites, satellite images, topographical maps, and keys of cadastral maps covering the whole governorate. The second part, in digital format on CD-ROM, contains an individual description of each site, sorted by markaz, and includes detailed maps and information about the history, archaeological contents, legal status, state of preservation, and bibliography of each site ... Product Description
When people think of archaeology, they commonly think of unearthing the remains of ancient civilizations in Egypt, Greece, Rome, Central or South America. But some fascinating history can be found in your own New Jersey backyard -- if you know where to look. Richard Veit takes readers on a well-organized guided tour through four hundred years of Garden State development as seen through archaeology in Digging New Jersey's Past. This illustrated guidebook takes readers to some of the state's most interesting discoveries and tells us what has been learned or is being learned from them. The diverse array of archaeological sites, drawn from all parts of the state, includes a seventeenth-century Dutch trading post, the site of the Battle of Monmouth, the gravemarkers of freed slaves, and a 1920s railroad roundhouse, among others. Veit begins by explaining what archaeologists do: How do they know where to dig? What sites are likely to yield important information? How do archaeologists excavate a site? How are artifacts cataloged, stored, and interpreted? He then moves through the state's history, from the contact of first peoples and explorers, to colonial homesteads, Revolutionary War battlefields, cemeteries, railroads, and factories. Veit concludes with some thoughts about the future of archaeological research in New Jersey and with suggestions on ways that interested individuals can become involved in the field.Richard Veit is an assistant professor in the Department of History and Anthropology at Monmouth University and the director of the university's Center for New Jersey History. ... This history profiles Atlanta's Auburn Avenue, which in the 1920s and 1930s became a nationally acclaimed business district that rivaled Harlem, Beale Street, and other bustling urban centers of black commerce and culture. Both the birthplace and final resting place of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., "Sweet Auburn" was also the crossroads of generations of key entertainers, educators, politicians, clergy, and activists in the African American community. Declared a national landmark in the 1980s, the area is the birthplace of notable black institutions including nightclubs such as the Royal Peacock; businesses such as Atlanta Life, the largest black-owned insurance company; The Atlanta Daily World, the first daily black newspaper; and political and social institutions including the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and 100 Black Men of America. ... Product Description
Winner of The Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Writing Award, for Reference, 2009.

Some two million people visit the battlefield at Gettysburg each year. It is one of the most popular historical destinations in the United States. Most visitors tour the field by following the National Park Service's suggested auto tour. The standard tour, however, skips crucial monuments, markers, battle actions, town sites, hospital locations, and other hidden historical gems that should be experienced by everyone. These serious oversights are fully rectified in The Complete Gettysburg Guide, penned by noted Gettysburg historian J. David Petruzzi and illustrated with the lavish, full-color photography and maps (70) of Civil War cartographer Steven Stanley.

Complete, detailed, and up-to-date, The Complete Gettysburg Guide: Walking and Driving Tours of the Battlefield, Town, Cemeteries, Field Hospital Sites, and other Topics of Historical Interest includes:

- Detailed driving and walking tours of the entire battlefield (including obscure sites that even veteran visitors miss or never hear about); - A tour of every identified field hospital site for both armies; - Tours of the National Cemetery and the town's Evergreen Cemetery; - A tour of the town of Gettysburg, including sites of historical interest before and after the battle;- Outlying battlefields including the June 26, 1863 skirmish site, East Cavalry Field, South Cavalry Field, Hunterstown, Hanover, and Fairfield; - And a special tour of the various rock carvings on the battlefield, many of which were created by returning veterans and pre-date most of the monuments.

Every student of Gettysburg, novice and expert alike, will want to learn from, enjoy, and treasure The Complete Gettysburg Guide. No visitor to Gettysburg will want to be without it.

About the Authors: J. David Petruzzi is widely recognized as one of the country's leading Gettysburg experts. In addition to his numerous articles for a wide variety of publications, he is the author (with Eric Wittenberg) of bestsellers Plenty of Blame to Go Around: Jeb Stuart's Controversial Ride to Gettysburg (Savas Beatie, 2006) and (with Wittenberg and Michael Nugent) One Continuous Fight: The Retreat From Gettysburg and the Pursuit of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, July 4-14, 1863 (Savas Beatie, 2008). Petruzzi is also a popular speaker on the Civil War Roundtable circuit and regularly conducts tours of Civil War battlefields.

Steven Stanley lives in Gettysburg and is a graphic artist specializing in historical map design and battlefield photography. His maps, considered among the best in historical cartography, have been a longtime staple of the Civil War Preservation Trust and have helped raised millions of dollars for the Trust through their preservation appeals and interpretation projects. Steve's maps have appeared in a wide variety of publications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't go to Gettysburg without it...
Quite possibly the BEST field guide ever written, in my opinion. This book is wonderfully illustrated and gives extremely easy to follow directions to each and every point of interest including quite a few that we would never have known about had we not bought this book.I could fill a page with praise for this book, but you really have to see it and use it to truly appreciate it.It will be our Gettysburg companion for every trip.5 stars and A+++.

3-0 out of 5 stars OKAY
I found this book very informative on the facets of the battlefield which Mr. Petruzzi considered. For those sites chosen he does an admirable job of explaining their importance. My only problem with this book is the absence of some key important areas of the battlefield.Perhaps a longer volume, or even a second volume would have taken care of this problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars A full color, well-illustrated and mapped guide!
The authors have surpassed anything else on the market, put simply. From the lavish amount of full color photos to the exemplary maps by Steven Stanley, whose work is featured in publications by the Civil War Preservation Trust, to the wonderful driving tour, this book will be hard to ever top. It is well worth the price! The narrative by J.D. Petruzzi provides just the right amount of detail for the first time visitor and brings out plenty of new tidbits for those who have "already seen it before."

I especially appreciate the sections on areas of the battlefield that are seldom visited.

Buy this book, you won't be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Gettysburg Guide
"The Complete Gettysburg Guide" is quite simply one of the best guide books I have read on any battle, period!

With colorful illustrations and several excellent and detailed maps, the book is an invaluable aid, regardless of your knowledge of the Battle of Gettysburg.

The format is as follows for the tours:

1.Skirmishes prior to Gettysburg.
2.The first day of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1).
3.The second and third days of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 2 and 3).
4.Battle at East Calvary Field.
5.Various tours of post-Gettysburg engagements (Hunterstown, Fairfield).
6.Tours of historical sites in Gettysburg, the National Cemetery, and Evergreen Cemetery.
7.Rock carvings on the Gettysburg battlefield.
8.Outlying hospital field sites.

Quite frankly, I cannot say enough good things about the book. The maps are numerous, detailed and easy to read, the illustrations are plentiful, and the narrative flows smoothly.

I have been to Gettysburg 8 times in my life so far.Should I be fortunate to go again, I will definitely bring this title with me.You will feel like you are actually touring the battlefield when reading this book - this was certainly the case with me.

Read, enjoy, and learn more about the Battle of Gettysburg.

Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Wows
Instead of five stars, how about five "wows."This book is the masterpiece that the Gettysburg battlefield always deserved. It's the book that the American public has always deserved, and it's the book that the fallen on both sides deserved. That it has taken 145 years to become available is no coincidence. The amount of detail and the painstaking accuracy reflect the cumulative scholarship of generations of research. Thus, when author, J. David Petruzzi, indicates that John Burns' gravestone has the date of his birth wrong by one year, we have no doubt he's right, and the "etched in stone" date is not.

Leveraging the utility of the text are battlefield maps created by graphic artist and civil war cartographer, Steven Stanley.Stanley's crisp modern photos are interspersed with those from the earlier eras, some depicting people, others the battlefield landscape. The combination gives the reader a feeling of timelessness. The clocks superimposed on the maps provide a sense of immediacy and help you rewind your own clock to the particular action being illustrated.

The book is organized into driving tours (the Gettysburg National Military Park is 25 square miles), the town, the cemeteries, the field hospital sites, and lots of interesting things that don't fall neatly into these categories.Whether you are interested in a book which will help you understand the way the battle unfolded hour by hour, or a book to organize your visit most efficiently, this is the only book you'll need.
