Editorial Review

Product Description

In Against Amnesia, Nancy J. Peterson addresses the ongoing postmodernist debate over the possibility and relevance of documentary and official histories. Drawing on Adrienne Rich's claim that women's literature and multicultural literature vigorously resist the amnesia and nostalgia that characterize mainstream North American culture, Peterson examines the struggles toward collective memory in a wealth of contemporary women's writing.

Peterson's in-depth analyses of selected works by Louise Erdrich, Toni Morrison, Irena Klepfisz, Joy Kogawa, and other contemporary women writers illustrate the ways in which these authors recover and represent the historical memories attached to their racial/ethnic backgrounds. Their works probe traumatic moments in the marginalized histories of minority peoples, including Native American genocide and dispossession; African American slavery, migration, and displacement; the Holocaust; and the internment of people of Japanese ancestry during World War II.

Peterson contends that these writers employ literary strategies that call attention to the gaps and silences of official histories. At the same time, these literary strategies allow the authors to narrate resonant counterhistories. Rejecting the playfully imaginative treatment of history found in typical postmodern novels, these contemporary women writers seek to reconstruct historical narratives in their texts and thereby reinvigorate historical memory in contemporary American culture.

5-0 out of 5 stars A surrealist classic
A Spy in Amnesia is the truest, cleanest, highest and wildest manifesto on what it means to be alive since the passing of Henry Miller. Here is a runaway stagecoach full of explosive opium. Here is a metaphysical freedom rider's call to arms, a garotte made from a garter belt, a long slide off the deck of a ship during a violent storm at sea that lands you in the heart of the harem. There's not a single word of falsehood in this book. But burned into every page-as though written in blood with a dying man's last breath-is a map to Elsewhere. Set sail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spy into Amnesia
"A Spy in Amnesia" is an intriguing journey into the passion of a man and the restraints of a society.Through the use of letters to an imaginary ex-lover, Semilian examines society as we know it and as it ought to be.Both entertaining and provocative, philosophical and literary, the reader whirls from beginning to end, from reality to fantasy, confronted with their own view of life and how it should be expressed.

Semilian's use and play of language is as fascinating as the book's content.

Definitely a book for the mature reader and seeker. ... Read more

Product Description
In recent years media attention has been belatedly directed towards reviving World War II issues involving Japan. This study deals first with the manner in which such issues so long fell into abeyance under Cold War conditions, while tracing the vast and varied writing on the war which meanwhile appeared within Japan. Evolving Japanese views on the war are largely focused on debate over the revision of the post-war constitution, especially its renunciation of "war potential". This work also contains an overview of the decades-long litigation within Japan on the screening of textbooks, especially on the war. ... Read more

Product Description
Reading a series of prose texts by 20th century white women writers ranging from 'The Making of Americans' to 'Civil Wars' this study interrogates a correlation between authors' subject positions as white and their textual investments in American history. It displaces the diffuse acceptance of whiteness as a given property by foregrounding it as a shared, and unquestioned feature of the white reader's and the text's consciousness. To trace the literary legacies of white amnesia about the Middle Passage is an urgent response to white women writers' participation in US-American historical mythology. At a point of convergence of Black Studies, American Studies and Gender Studies this investigation results in a profound denaturalization of what American history and American cultural memory may signify. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars The Stepford Wives - Updated, But Not a New Premise
What a disappointment!I was intrigued, initially, until I got about 25 pages into this book and discovered it was "The Stepford Wives" with a twist.Since there was nothing much original, although well written enough, I rated this two stars.Had it been poorly written, it would have rated zero for lack of originality and, essentially, copying Ira Levin's premise with the twist that the men are the puppets and the women the masters. I did finish the book, but wouldn't waste the money purchasing it for anything more than25 cents at a flea market.

2-0 out of 5 stars A long wait for a pointless resolution
The book was interesting to start, but it became pretty obvious that it was just edging along to resolution that when it finally came was obvious and disappointing. It also left a huge number of aspects raised in the story with no resolution at all, pointless or otherwise.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Neiderman's best!
This book is haunting and chilling. Andrew Neiderman is one of horror's most captivating voices! I have been a fan for many, many years and have read all of his books and they just keep getting better. I highly recommend this book

1-0 out of 5 stars better forget this
i never read through this, but i still feel competent to review this, and i'll tell you why. a man suddenly forgets his whole life. stuff begins to come back to him. the writing style isn't that bad. but...it's too slow and in an annoying way. the wife just continues to tell him details for over at least 100 pages. no you don't like that. your family died in a car accident. neiderman, you could just write "she told him about his life, but the details remained unfamiliar to him". no. the author has to go on and on about this. every little detail. in addition, the family moves. and now the man has to learn about this new place. so AN goes on and on about that. new persons, about the community, etc. i'm giving it a 1 because any writer should really be able to avoid going on and on about every petty detail.

2-0 out of 5 stars A book you'll want to forget...
I found the book's premise (and introductory chapters) to be somewhat intriguing. However, the plot became more implausible with each chapter until it lost its integrity altogether. What could have been an interesting novel turned out to be a far-fetched tale that left me shaking my head in confusion and disappointment. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what you might expect
The title was changed to make the book more appealing - was originally going to be 'Knowledge Management' or similar.

The book is really an attempt to justify corporations spending money on knowledge management. However it does not have much useful or practical information on managing knowledge.

He describes the problem pretty well but there is not enough on solutions.

Product Description

In this book, Michele Battini explains how the trial of the entire military command of the Nazi power structure in Italy, prepared by the Allies following the Nuremberg model, came to be replaced by a few contradictory trials of very minor significance. This resulted in an enormous historical misrepresentation of the Nazi occupation of Italy and reduced it to the scale of individual responsibilities.
