Product Description
Doug Higley (a.k.a. The Phantom of the Midway) is a long-time midway and boardwalk attraction enthusiast who pens columns on outdoor rides for CIRCUS REPORT and SHOW BIZ U.S.A. SCARY DARK RIDES is a true labor of love, and isn't intended as the 'definitive guide' to those ride-thru haunted houses. Instead, Higley relates tales of the dark rides he's experienced (many of which are now gone), as well as ones that are still in the planning stages (including Universal's MEN IN BLACK: THE RIDE and Kansas City, Kansas' THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF OZ theme-park, due to open in 2002). Higley's tone is highly conversational, and he has an infectious fondness for these attractions. His descriptions of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion and Snow White's Scary Adventure are quite good at evoking a sense of what it's like to actually ride these attractions, but Higley is just as descriptive when it come to the dinky little trailer rides that tour the country in carnivals and county fairs. 'Even the worst of the dark rides CAN be effective,' he convinces us. 'A few buzzers going off and a decrepit mask poorly lit in a weak flash can do the job if the rider has their eyes closed! A common trait among neophytes and the very young.' Higley peppers the book with photos, design art, his own stylized drawings, and even a pop-up centerfold. Most of this 'handcrafted,' self-published book was done on an old typewriter. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Pirates of the Caribbean is a dark ride at the Disneyland, Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris theme parks. This was the last attraction in which Walt Disney himself participated in designing; it opened three months after his death. It is located within the New Orleans Square portion of Disneyland, its facade evoking antebellum New Orleans, topped by a 31-star United States flag (which would indicate the 1850s). An overhead sign at the boat dock names it for the famous pirate Jean Lafitte (although his name is misspelled Laffite), who fought alongside the U.S. Army at the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. ... Product Description

The New York Times bestselling duo of Crusie and Mayer team up again with a hilarious paranormal novel that shows why the wildest ride at the Dreamland Amusement Park isn’t the roller coaster

Mary Alice Brannigan doesn’t believe in the supernatural. Nor does she expect to find that Dreamland, the decaying amusement park she’s been hired to restore, is a prison for the five Untouchables, the most powerful demons in the history of the world. Plus, there’s a guy she’s falling hard for, and there’s something about him that’s not quite right.

But rocky romances and demented demons aren’t the only problems in Dreamland: Mab’s also coping with a crooked politician, a supernatural raven, a secret government agency, an inexperienced sorceress, an unsettling inheritance, and some mind-boggling revelations from her past. As her personal demons wreck her newfound relationship and real demons wreck the park, Mab faces down immortal evil and discovers what everybody who’s ever been to an amusement park knows: The end of the ride is always the wildest

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT what you're used to.
If you are looking for Agnes & the Hitman again, or even something as passable as Don't Look Down, then this is NOT the book for you. The dialogue is not as easy as the other two books, and the characters seem to be forced and inconsistant. They start with a familiar mold, but then go sadly and wildly askew from the Crusie/Mayer likability. The storyline seems "phoned in" with some familiar elements meant to inspire comfort, but just seem to miss the mark and comes off as mocking the other two (GREAT) books. I am a big fan of Crusie, but seriously considered re-selling my collection upon reading this mess.

3-0 out of 5 stars I was expecting to laugh
"Don't Look Down" was a good read and funny and "Agnes and the Hitman" is one of my all time favorites as it had me laughing out loud, so I had high expectations for "Wild Ride".I was initially surprised to find it a paranormal but went with it anyway hoping for some really unique opportunities for humor.Although it was entertaining, it never really sucked me in (you know, where you are drawn back to real life but your mind is still in the story. . .) and while mildly humorous, it never forced a laugh out of me.

The action was less than I'd hoped for as well.Although it was promoted as being most exciting at the end (just like a roller coaster), the big "splash" just felt rushed and overly simplified. This book seemed to me to focus on just getting to the conclusion, and I found the 'joy in the journey' missing. In spite of this I'm still looking forward to their next collaboration.

1-0 out of 5 stars I wanted to like it, because I love Jennifer Crusie, but ...
I have a real thing about reading books. When I start a book.I finish it.Whether it be the good, the bad, or the ugly.I finish it, because I feel I owe it to myself to at least finish it once I've bought it whether I like it or not.

It pains me to say I couldn't finish this book.Well, I tried.I tried on several occasions.I couldn't get into the plot, I didn't like the characters, and about halfway through, I gave up.

I've been reading Jennifer Crusie books for years, starting back when she wrote Harlequins and up to and including her books with Bob Mayer.

I'm hoping she gets back on track.

1-0 out of 5 stars Another disappointed reader.
I also had expectations that this would be a romance. But not only was that not the case, the main characters were foolish and goofy and kind of unlikable.I won't even go into the paranormal stuff.Let's just say I don't believe it even when it's done seriously -- and as slapstick, it's unbearable. The only thing that kept me reading was the fact that I like the author and was hoping for some redemption in the ending. My mistake.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected from Crusie
I've read several of Crusie's books, both solo and collaborated. This was a bit of a disappointment. The plot, while other-worldy, was not at all captivating. I'm surprised I finished the book at all. It seemed like a futile attempt to bring in the elements that have made previous Crusie books a big success. Don't spend money on it. If you really want to read it, borrow it fromlibrary. ... Read more

Excerpt: Amusement park and theme park are terms for a group of rides and other entertainment attractions assembled for the purpose of entertaining a large group of people. An amusement park is more elaborate than a simple city park or playground, usually providing attractions meant to cater to children, teenagers, and adults. A theme park is differentiated from an amusement park by its various 'lands' (sections) devoted to telling a particular story. These lands are characterized by the idea that the immersive environment they create contains architecture, landscaping, stores, rides, and even food that support a specific theme. Visual intrusion from other 'lands', or from outside the park, are considered undesirable. Non-theme amusement park rides will usually have little in terms of theming or additional design element...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=137327 ... Read more

Six Flags America is a theme park located in Mitchellville in Prince George's County, Maryland. It lies 15 miles (24 km) east of Washington D.C., and 30 miles (48 km) southwest of Baltimore. It sits on a site of 523 acres (2.12 km), 131 of which is currently used for park operations. The park's history dates to 1973, when Texas billionaire H. Ross Perot and a pair of Irish animal trainers first proposed a wildlife preserve on more than 400 acres (1.6 km) of corn and tobacco fields. ABC television later bought out Perot and his partners and opened the park as a drive through safari called The Largo Wildlife Preserve in July of 1974, projecting 850,000 visitors a year. The initial projections that were expected never materialized. In 1975, the park added narrated tours through four car 150-person trains. Unfortunately, the park failed to generate a profit. In 1976, ABC bowed out, citing massive losses. The park stayed open with a decreased staff in 1977 and was closed altogether for the 1978 season. Then at the end of 1978, the park was sold to Jim Fowler, the host of Wild Kingdom. In the 1979 season the park reopened with the train tour through a safari and a small park with a children's playground, animal shows, and a petting zoo. The park continued to not be profitable but stayed open summers through the 1979 season when Fowler's company bowed out as well. In the summer of 1980, the park once again was closed for the 1980 season. In the Summer of 1980, the park was sold to a group of local businessmen and reopen in 1981. The animal drive through safari remained...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=345202 ... Read more

MONEY PUZZLES.

"Put not your trust in money, but put your money in trust."

OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES.

1.--A POST-OFFICE PERPLEXITY.

In every business of life we are occasionally perplexed by some chance question that for the moment staggers us. I quite pitied a young lady in a branch post-office when a gentleman entered and deposited a crown on the counter with this request: "Please give me some twopenny stamps, six times as many penny stamps, and make up the rest of the money in twopence-halfpenny stamps." For a moment she seemed bewildered, then her brain cleared, and with a smile she handed over stamps in exact fulfilment of the order. How long would it have taken you to think it out? ... Read more
