Excellent illustations show neuro-muscular activation for each exercise. Stresses the importance of stabilization muscles as you are as strong as your core stabilizers.Very good hints for each exercise, things to focus on and things to avoid. I am using it daily as a personal trainer and conditioning coach

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Illustrations but limited number of exercises included.
The illustrations in this book are great. The only problem is the number of exercises included was limited. I expected to see a number more of actual exercises. It's great for seeing exactly which muscle or muscle is group beingworked, just needs more.

    Product Description
The best-selling, groundbreaking classic by Norman Cousins on combating life-threatening illness through humor and patient participation in care.

Anatomy of an Illness was the first book by a patient that spoke to our current interest in taking charge of our own health. It started the revolution in patients working with their doctors and using humor to boost their bodies' capacity for healing. When Norman Cousins was diagnosed with a crippling and irreversible disease, he forged an unusual collaboration with his physician, and together they were able to beat the odds. The doctor's genius was in helping his patient to use his own powers: laughter, courage, and tenacity. The patient's talent was in mobilizing his body's own natural resources, proving what an effective healing tool the mind can be. This remarkable story of the triumph of the human spirit is truly inspirational reading. ... Read more

An informative book and should be read by all of those suffering from an illness.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book helped me overcome my own back pain
Norman Cousins is a brilliant innovator and optimist whose story inspired and encouraged me to continue discovery and healing of my chronic back pain, deemed "undifferentiated spondyloarthrapy," resembling his ankylosing spondylitis. This book is still exciting and readable today, and it serves as a great personal history for the holistic healthcare revolution.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Laughter, the Music of Life"
Cured by laughing? Well, not quite, but it certainly helps. In ANATOMY OF AN ILLNESS, Norman Cousins quotes many sources to bolster his own journey from an incurable disease back to reasonable health once more.

His program of positive attitudes, laughter, generous doses of vitamin C-- supervised by a doctor--and a strong, unyielding determination to lick the disease, along with realistic goal setting is beneficial to anyone with health issues.

He quotes Sir William Osler, famous physician,as saying that "laughter is the music of life." How true! Just hearing someone laugh in genuine merriment automatically lifts the corners of one's mouth even if they don't know the cause of the laughter.

Especially fascinating to the average reader are his personal accounts of famous people such as Dr. Albert Schweitzer and Dr. Paul Brand. Music and humor generously blended with compassion for the sufferer, along with wisely chosen medicine worked miracles.

In his chapter on longevity, he also describes a most interesting visit he had with Pablo Casals and how he dealt with pain in his nineties.

Norman Cousins two main principles are well worth remembering: "a highly developed purpose and a will to live."

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
Netter is pretty great. An institution, even. Hardcover is essential. My only issue with this product is the online 'companion'. It is difficult to search for images, and actually find what you are looking for. The quality is not as high as I would expect, and is fuzzy when blown up to 8.5 x 11 page size. You also can't download or copy photos into your own notes. Probably for copyright protection, but then why put a "download" button (which does not work). The book itself is great!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for dissection and beyond
Currently I am a graduate student at Colorado State University. As a part of my program I must take human dissection.I like this atlas so much that I bought the professional edition for my own study outside the anatomy rooms and I now use my old softcover Netter atlas for dissection.I must also say the main difference between the professional edition and the softcover edition is mainly the covering of the atlas, and there are hardly any other differences. While the pictures are not real photos, the paintings done by Dr. Netter are so accurate I almost prefer them.Based on the pictures I am able to get a clear idea of where structures are positioned before cutting or doing blunt dissection with my fingers/probe/scissors.That being said, there is also great benefit to seeing what the structures should look like after a professional dissection in photographs.I believe it is best to have exposure to both excellent pictures (like in this atlas, for a general location and a grip on vocabulary) and either a cadaver or photos taken by a professional anatomist.I highly recommend this atlas. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful tool
This book got me through medical gross anatomy! It is by far the most useful book I had. It cuts through all of the superfluous garbage in other books and teaches you what you need to know, how you need to know it. Thanks Dr Goldberg!

I only wish the author wrote companion books on histology and embryology.

Other people who are whining about it don't know what they are talking about. The people saying that it is organized wrong must not have read the part where it explains the fact that the organization was done on purpose because it makes more sense to learn anatomy from a systems model than from a regional model, which is done merely to make dissection and tests easier. The point of this book is that it presents anatomy how it SHOULD be presented, not in the inefficient, nonsensical manner it already is presented at medical schools. These people missed the fact that the book includes a regional based table of contents so that you can correlate and cross reference it with any other textbook. The author went out of his way to make this book useful to medical students because that is who this book is for.

The people who think this is primarily a review book apparently haven't even read the book. It would be great to use as a review, but it is written primarily as a high yield learning tool.

The people who think this book is not in depth enough seem to think they should be handed everything. These gunners should stop whining. That's why you have to buy a good atlas and perhaps other texts, go to class, and do your dissections. You won't learn everything in this book, but you will get a lot of good use out of it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as "Microbiology made simple"
I bought this book based on my experience with the "Microbiology made ridiculously simple" book. This book is a good learning aid, but nowhere nearly as good as the microbiology text.In my opinion, this is a mediocre anatomy supplement that is leaching off the success of the Microbiology book that is similarly titled.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was really disappointed with this book. I expected that it would be a treasure chest of memory aids (e.g. rhymes, humerous pictures) for everything from muscle origins/insertions to topographical features of bones. While it does offer a few memory aids, it is primarily a review book, just like any other. In fact, compared to the BRS series it falls far short in the level of detail offered. Therefore, I think it fails as a review book and it fails as a source for memory aids. It may be useful as a review book for an undergraduate level anatomy course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Salvation for the 3-D challanged
I discovered this book during the last third of the med school anatomy course and it literally changed my perspective on the subject.Being a very visual learner, I'd fall asleep after reading one paragraph of Moore. And constructing a three dimensional picture from reading the text - forget it. The analogies in this book worked great for me.It was a great way to see the 'big picture' before searching for details in Moore. It is also surprisingly detailed for such a small book. (You will still need a 'big' textbook, though)I wish all of my books there written in similar style, but I realize some people might not like it.For example, if you enjoy reading Moore, this book is probably not for you.On the other hand, if you find anatomy to be unbearably dry, I highly recommend this book.

Addendum: (2010) So, it has been 6 years since my med school anatomy class and I just recently pulled my 'Ridiculously Simple Anatomy' off the shelf to quickly look something up, because I still remember the things I learned from it - and that's a definition of a good book in my book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Buy
I thought this was a great supplement during my course study of anatomy. It does not cover everything, but that's when you go to MOore...it made some things very clear and easy to memorize that were important clinically. I think it was worth the investmenet. But of course the humor may not appeal to all...more for the visual learner I think... ... Read more

WINNER, 2010 BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD! THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF SEX EDUCATORS, COUNSELORS & THERAPISTS (AASECT)In this Information Age, you'd think we know everything about female genitalia. But we don't! Women, their lovers and even medical professionals are missing essential information about how to turn a woman on ... completely. We're not just talking about Ye Olde G-Spot here. Women have an entire network of structures responsible for arousal and orgasm that not even most doctors know about. (And you know what? The G-spot isn't even a "spot," it turns out!) The result: women must discover their sexual potential without accurate guides. In this groundbreaking book, medical professional and sex educator Sheri Winston begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlighting presents the first-ever comprehensive, accurate, integrated picture of what's "down there." This fun, sexy guide combines lost knowledge with ancient and modern sexuality information, and illuminates every woman's secret paths to fabulous, orgasmically abundant sex. Winston's background includes over twenty years as a nurse-midwife, gynecology practitioner and student of the ancient erotic traditions. Over the years, she has developed her own unique approach to sexuality education, called Wholistic SexualityTM, which integrates common and obscure information from modern science, specialized holistic healing know-how and esoteric sexual practices. She is the executive director of the Kingston, NY-based Center for the Intimate Arts."Women's Anatomy of Arousal brings our recognition of the depth and subtleties of feminine anatomy out of the fog and into the 21st Century. 5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have!
One of the best books I ever read about the female body!! Ladies, it will be your new best friend. Ande hopefully your man's information friend too...
It's informative, fun and without shame or guilt.
    I love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sheri Winston helps women explore themselves and gain that secret that leads to great sex
Pleasure for a woman has always been a more arduous science than it is for men. "Women's Anatomy of Arousal: Secret Maps to Buried Pleasure" is a guide for women to figuring out and understanding what exactly does it for them, a fact that many women go through their lives not truly understanding. With nothing held back, Sheri Winston helps women explore themselves and gain that secret that leads to great sex. "Women's Anatomy of Arousal" is a must for any woman who wants that fulfilling experience every time they go home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly redemptive!
When I decided to buy this book I was unsuspecting of the treasure trove I was about to discover. The material contained, as well as the manner in which it's presented makes it a masterpiece. When it comes to the subject (sex), there is a superabundance of junk out there. This book changes all that. It puts sex where it needs to be. The truth is that sex is not sinful but divine. We are all aware of the pleasures of sex, however, not so many are ready to admit of the pain and suffering that negative attitudes toward sex, including represion and ignorance have caused. The author helps changing all that by using a two-pronged approach, finding our way through pleasure to an encounter with our Self, and leaving our misconceptions, including repression, shame and guilt behind. The material in this book, if put in practice, will definitely make you not only a better lover but a more authentic and real human being.

By the way, if you happen to be a man, as I am, don't let the title fool you. Get this book and put it into practice...you won't regret it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best education
This book is great!Very enjoyable reading and extremely informative.Gives great insight as to why women are so complicated.Best sex education ever, should be required reading for all!

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable book of sexual techniques focused on women but equally valuable for men
Every woman should read this book, even though there will be many that will be offended by the statements that all women should actively engage in frequent and imaginative self-stimulation. Winston is very specific in explaining what portions of the female anatomy are sexual hotspots and how they can be stimulated, including in what order the excitation usually follows. She is also specific regarding what a woman can do to herself to reach the heights of sexual pleasure.
Of course, the intelligent male will realize that he should also read this book, for if a woman can do it; it is logical that a man can as well. There is nothing more gratifying than having a woman panting her way through an orgasm of your creation. Sex is like every other human endeavor in that practice and committed study will make you better at it. Furthermore, quality reference works are valuable in imparting the experience and wisdom of others, so if we are willing to read books to learn about other subjects, it is sensible to read books like this about sex. Whether we are willing to admit it or not, sex is a fundamental component of the human experience and it is unhealthy to deny our sexual drives.
Therefore, this is a book for women that men will also find valuable, for the greater the variety and depth of experiences that women encounter, the more willing they will be to perform "enhanced sexual techniques" on a man.

4-0 out of 5 stars one of many good atlases
There are many atlases on the market and they all do the job well.I do prefer Grant's over Netter's because Grant's has more text and descriptions. However, some of my classmates (med school) do prefer Rohan's which is actual pictures of cadavers. You can't go wrong with any of the atlases though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Illustrations, Little Else.
Grant's Atlas has some of the best conceptual illustrations of the body of any atlas I have read. They are clear and are loaded with details that can truly buttress anatomy classes. However, there is very, very little text, and the text that the authors do include are mere descriptions of the illustrations. When studying anatomy, Grant's is very helpful if you need to look up a structure and clearly see its features and relationships to other features of the body. But when you're trying to learn by visualization - which at least in my experience is probably the best way to learn all of this information - I don't find Grant's to be very helpful. It's also not very expansive on the functional importance of structures and how their dysfunctions can cause serious problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grant's Atlas of Anatomy Review
The book was in perfect shape and there was no delay in receiving it, very satisfied.

4-0 out of 5 stars Grant's Anatomy Atlas
I find this book to be ok. There are some muscles and charts that they just refuse to put in for origin and insertions ect because they find only certain "ones" important. For example i wasnt pleased when they just included 8 muscles for facial expression when there are more like 20 or so. So then i had to find another book to look them up to study from which makes this atlas obsolete in some ways.

    Product Description
What is fascism? Many authors have proposed definitions, but most fail to move beyond the abstract. The esteemed historian Robert O. Paxton answers this question for the first time by focusing on the concrete: what the fascists did, rather than what they said. From the first violent uniformed bands beating up “enemies of the state,” through Mussolini’s rise to power, to Germany’s fascist radicalization in World War II, Paxton shows clearly why fascists came to power in some countries and not others, and explores whether fascism could exist outside the early-twentieth-century European setting in which it emerged.

The Anatomy of Fascism will have a lasting impact on our understanding of modern European history, just as Paxton’s classic Vichy France redefined our vision of World War II. Based on a lifetime of research, this compelling and important book transforms our knowledge of fascism–“the major political innovation of the twentieth century, and the source of much of its pain.”

5-0 out of 5 stars kindle version needs links to the many valuable footnotes
A 5-star book. However, the kindle edition badly needs links to the many valuable footnotes. I found it to be so much trouble to look up each footnote, and then to return to the page I came from, that I've just just now returned the kindle edition and ordered the paperback.

3-0 out of 5 stars Kindle edition doesn't have linked footnotes
The content of this book is fascinating, but I wanted to lodge a protest about the formatting of the kindle edition -- the footnotes/endnotes aren't hyperlinked. For a scholarly book like this with many, many footnotes, that's not good enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Failed Liberalism, Conservative Complicities, Mobilizing Passions
In delineating fascism, Paxton's position is that `what fascists did tells us at least as much as what they said' and any studies should `explore the interaction between Leader and Nation and between Party and civil society.'`Weak or failed liberal regime' coupled with `complicity by existing elites' provided the critical opening for Hitler and Mussolini to take power.Paxton laid considerable responsibility on the existing elites: `at every crucial momentof decision at each ratcheting up of anti-Jewish repression, at each new abridgment of civil liberties and infringement of legal norms, at each new aggressive move in foreign policy, at each further subordination of the economy to the needs of autarky and hasty rearmament - most German conservatives (with some honorable exceptions) swallowed their doubts about the Nazis in favor of their overriding common interests.'

Paxton argued that `mobilizing passions' form the emotional lava that set fascism's foundations': the belief that one's group is a victim, the dread of the group's decline; the beauty of violence and the efficacy of will; the primacy of the group.'`Fascisms seek out in each national culture those themes that are best capable of mobilizing a mass movement of regeneration, unification and purity, directed against liberal individualism and constitutionalism and against leftist class struggle.'

Paxton also noted the trend that `wherever fascists became more active claimants for power, that effort was to turn them into something strikingly different from the radical early days.'Hence, focusingtoo heavily on the beginnings of fascism distorted the understanding of the movement in its entirety.Fascist ideology can be `simultaneously proclaimed as central yet amended or violated as expedient.'`Anti-capitalistic rhetoric was selective, while the fascists denounced speculative international finance, they respected the property of national producers,' and capitalism's eventual treatment under fascism was far better than what earlier rhetoric would suggest. For fascist, `the truth was whatever permitted the new fascist man (and woman) to dominate others, and whatever made the chosen people triumph.'

Conservative complicities were imperative in letting fascists gain power; therefore, `the seizure of power' for Hitler and Mussolini took place only when they transformed `a quasiconstitutional office into unlimited personal authority.'In Germany and Italy, `the constitutional state had ceased to function normally well before the fascists were brought into power. It was the fascist parties that had overthrown it, though they had helped bring it to deadlock. It had to cease to function because it had been unable to deal with the problems at hand.'Fearing communist terrorism, Conservatives colluded with fascist in violence against the Left when von Papen removed the ban on SA activity, bringing about `the legitimation of violence against a demonized internal enemy.'This further led to the `Decree for the Protection of People and State, Reichstag Fire Decree and Enabling Act.During the `normalization process,' Hitler and Mussolini made `compromise for rule' with the existing elites.Without conservative support, fascism would not work.French conservatives, for example, `did not feel sufficientlythreatened in the 1930s to call on fascists for help.'Paxton explained that `it took a comparable crisis, a comparable opening of political space, comparable skill at alliance building and a comparable cooperation from existing elites. In his own words, `I prefer to leave space for national differences and for human choices in our explanation.'

In exercising power, `fascist rule must be seen as a never-ending struggle for preeminence within a coalition, a tug-of-war between fascists and conservatives, a tug-of-war between leader and party and a tug-of-war between party and state, an elaboration of Fraenkel's dual state theory.`The duplication of traditional power centers by parallel party organizations was a principal reason for the `shapelessness' and the chaotic lines of authority that characterized fascist rule.'The primary difference between Germany and Italy was the Nazi radicalization and elevation of the party and Italian Fascist regime's degeneration into conservative authoritarian rule: `Nazi Germany alone experienced full radicalization; Mussolini turned out as prime minister to prefer stability to adventure.'Once in power, `Mussolini strengthened the normative state at the expense of the party.Entrusted the Italian police to a professional civil servant, Arturo Bochini, rather than to a party zealot on the Himmler model.Operating the all-important police force on bureaucratic principles rather than as part of a prerogative state of unlimited arbitrary power was Italian Fascism's most important divergence from Nazi practice.'

Paxton argued that `war provided fascism's clearest radicalizing impulse' and a dynamic process of `cumulative radicalization' in which problems magnify, pressures build, inhibitions fall away, and legitimating arguments are found explained why the line was crossed in certain places at certain times, and not others.'`Dress rehearsals' that `served to lower inhibitions and provided trained personnel hardened for anything' allowed the Nazis to carry out their genocide programme: the first being the euthanasia for incurably ill and insane Germans, the second under the work of the Einsatzgruppen, the intervention squads specially charged with executing the political and culture elite of invaded countries.

The differences between fascist rule and military dictatorship or authoritarian rule are stark.First, as mentioned earlier, fascists like clear lines of authority.Second, `most military dictators have acted simply as tyrants, without daring to unleash the popular excitement of fascism.'`Authoritarians would rather leave the population demobilized and passive, while fascists want to engage and excite the public.'Lastly, `although authoritarian regimes often trample civil liberties and are capable of murderous brutality, they do not share fascism's urge to reduce the private sphere to nothing.'

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent. Readable Work
As one of the few American scholars of the Vichy regime, it is perhaps fitting that at the end of his career, eminent historian Robert Paxton tackles the political-philosophical question of "what" fascism "is."What he produces is a slim, eminently readable work about fascist movements in Europe and beyond, seeking those tropes and similitudes that herald a fascist movement in action. This builds to a chapter in the work that details what he thinks fascism "is" (even though the word, he freely admits, can be slippery and still hotly contested in academic circles).

Paxton's conclusions are too detailed to present here, but the book is neatly organized around a set of key questions. They are, in brief, how fascist movements create themselves, how they take root, how they acquire some form of "power," how they deploy that power, and what the long term prospects of a fascist regime are (Paxton suggesting that fascism is, fundamentally, a "zero-sum game").He then devotes a brief chapter to fascist and quasi-fascist movements outside of Europe by way of solid historical comparison, and concludes with his "definition" of what fascism is, ably summed up in other reviews in this thread. At the end is a superior bibliographic essay on the major works concerning fascism and the differences between them.Any college student writing a paper on fascism would do well to pick up the book for the bibliographic essay alone.

Paxton eschews theoretical language and uses a writing style that is not "easy" given the weight of the topic, but accessible to academic and non-academic readers. While many have bemoaned what they see as omissions (and rightfully so), I do not see this as a fair criticism given Paxton's obvious desire to reach as broad an audience as possible with his cautionary analysis. He supports his arguments well with the most eminent and credible authorities, and the book's precise endnotes amply reflect the deadly seriousness of the work and his command of the subject.

Some have criticized Paxton, I notice, for giving Stalin's Russia the short-shrift, or neglecting other fascist thought systems woven in to certain nations.I think the latter point is a function of editorial choice for the sake of clarity.I suppose my only response to the former point is that the book is "The Anatomy of Fascism," not "The Anatomy of Stalinism."Indeed, on pages 209-211 of his book, Paxton addresses this very point succinctly.Stalin qua Hitler (who are only two players on a much grander stage) is a distinction with a difference, and in rejecting the sometimes too-monolithic word "totalitarianism" as an analytical mode, Paxton is able to stay with his subject without veering off into comparing once-competing "totalitarian" systems, which would only confuse the reader and reduce his central hypotheses to hash.Or, as he puts it, avoiding the default debate of "Which monster was more monstrous?" a fundamentally meaningless question in the context of this book and what it seeks to achieve, namely "fascism parsed to its essence."I also notice that many seem to think that this book is somehow "far left," or something along those lines. For myself, I found it very apolitical, which was not only refreshing but allowed for a crisp clarity in presentation untroubled by a pre-determined set of assumptions.

I suppose the most chilling conclusion Paxton reaches is that "fascism" is, at one of its hearts, a "creeping" phenomenon, more organic than, to use one example,"Marxist-mechanical," a movement "from below" in many of its manifestations as opposed to "from above."While a proposition that culturally driven is difficult to prove, I think Paxton makes a compelling case.I do not wish to say more for fear of ruining the book for a prospective reader.

A sober, accessible, readable work from a master historian performing at his absolute best.Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and fascinating read
Paxton takes a unique approach in this book, which takes some getting used to, but in the end is very enlightening.Instead of trying to classify fascism by the expected trappings of the 20th century (i.e. brown uniforms, jackboots and armbands) Paxton instead tries to really analyze what the underlying social conditions are for fascism to take hold, and what the meta-characteristics of fascism are when it appears.Fascist ideology was widespread in Europe (and even in America) for the first half of the 20th century, but most movements did not develop past what Paxton calls phase 2.For those regimes that did, there is an interesting problem of whether the regime can continue to expand or if without continued expansion it falls into stagnation and "mere" dictatorship.Agree with it or not, the ultimate definition of fascism Paxton leaves us with is a good social lens through which we should continue to examine governments at home and abroad. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!!
VERY VERY THOROUGH; just as good as the "male" version of this book, which I had previously before I bought this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Not" Just Strength Training for Women
This is a very well illustrated book on strength training anatomy. It has three strong points.(1) It is inexpensive. (2) It shows proper technique for comon exercises in the gym that "mortal human beings" actually do.Many other books are designed with illustrations of Arnold Schwartzenager-like bodys lifting free weights the size of train wheels. If you are interested in the "Schwartzenager" version of this book get a copy of "Strength Training Anatomy" by Delavier. It is the "male " companion book to this one. It can be downloaded free, on the web, if you do a little searching on Google. (3) The best part of this book is that isshows you what "not" to do.It gives illustrations and warnings about bad technique, and how you can get hurt.

1-0 out of 5 stars Did you KNOW?!We women have NO MUSCLES in our upper bodies!! AT ALL!!
But we have Beautiful BREASTS which this author Loves illustrated, without any covering, as often as possible! There's not a Single Muscle in a woman's upper body if you believe this book... Maybe the author is afraid that the voluptuously round, firm breasts he's had illustrated so beautifully will be marred by muscles or muscle training... NOT TRUE - but who knows why they left half our bodies out? There is ONE good fact in this book that makes it worth Skimming in the book store - he describes in detail the difference in the muscles that support the pelvis. In that same (maybe 2page) excerpt he also describes what happens during pregnancy (that your body releases a hormone that relaxes the muscles, to ultimately make birth easier- so you have to be Careful about resistance training then). VIOLA! I've saved you the cost of the book (bowing for applause) ;) The rest is crap. NOW - the original Strength Training Anatomy (targeted toward men - but the last sentence is the only pertinent difference) is Excellent. However, that's the reason I bought this POS (I thought it must be as good) - SO! I REFUSE to buy the original since I feel immensely slighted by the "little womens' version". I'll check it out at the public library to avoid PAYING anyone to print trash like this. However, if they would pay attention to the reviews and correct this book with another print that Actually accounts for Whole women (preferably wearing bras - I don't want to stair at yours anymore than you want to stair at mine) Then!... I might buy another. Till then I'll keep my bra, burn this book, and go with The Body Sculpting Bible or something similar. Good luck - save the money ;)

5-0 out of 5 stars Get an inside view of the female muscles in action.
Frederic Delavier is well known for his books on anatomy in relationship to exercising and strength training. In this book, he gives women the inside track to their special needs.

If you workout without knowing what muscles and muscle groups you're working and how they relate to the needs of your body, you're wasting time. Part of the fun and enjoyment of fitness is knowing what it's doing to and for your body. This book is a great resource that every female exerciser should own and refer to often.

"To know your body better so that you train better, you must understand some basic concepts," Delavier writes. Then he discusses the three female body types and how fat is distributed in women and why.

Like all Delavier's books, it's laid out exceptionally well. The pictures and drawings are extremely well-done. You will not only find out what muscles, primary and secondary, all exercises work but also how to correctly do the exercises.

The book covers body weight exercises, free weights, machine and a few strength band exercises. It covers exercises for the buttocks, legs, abs and back --- all areas of concern to women.

While I would have liked to have seen the upper body included, that can be found in another book I'll discuss with you in another review. I feel many fitness authors seem to forget that women have upper bodies at all.

You will see a full view of the entire female muscular anatomy in the front of the book. In the back, you'll see the rear view. You'll also find a definition of each descriptive word used in the book from abdomen to vital respiratory capacity.

Admittedly some of the areas of the book are somewhat above the layman's level of understanding. But it's easy to look in the front of the book and find out what he's talking about. Most of it, however, is easy to understand.

Human Kinetics is known for publishing only the finest health and fitness titles and this one is certainly no exception.

The only thing that would have made it better would be if it were spiral bound.

If you're female or if you are a personal trainer who works with females, you absolutely need this book. I can't imagine training without it.

While you're at it, get Strength Training Anatomy (Sports Anatomy) by the same author.

    Highly recommended.

    - Susanna K. Hutcheson

2-0 out of 5 stars A book half done, isn't the book for me
Like 90% of the reviewers of this book I'm wondering "What happened to the info on training the 'upper' half of a womans body?"And why the omission?Probably to sell more books!

I really think Strength Training Anatomy (Sports Anatomy Series) is tough to beat when it comes to a reference book for strength training or body building, for both men and women. It completely covers training the entire body and gives wonderful examples and step-by-step instructions on how to perform weight lifting movements to avoid injury. It also discusses possible injuries and what exercises can be done to avoid straining problem areas - something I love because of a bad shoulder prone to impingement and a surgically repaired knee.

But this book... "Women's Strength Training Anatomy" by the same author, seemed like an unfinished work, but more importantly I asked myself "Why bother when all the info is in the other one?"It's written and illustrated the same, and the info it does have is very good, but it seems to be an attempt to specialize that actually comes off as incomplete.

The areas of the body covered in Women's: butt, abs and legs, are all covered in the other book.My recommendation...wait for the new edition of Strength Training Anatomy to come out and buy that book instead of this one. You'll get all the info in this one, plus the stuff they omitted and should have put in! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent pain management resource!
This book has been a life-saver! After buying one for ourselves, we have since purchased many for gifts ... it is an excellent resource for pain management through stretching ... the pictures are very clear and easy to understand, and all stretches are explained and described so well - if you buy only one book on stretching, make it this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Muscles on view
Great anatomical pictures of muscles in use.It helps to envision and feel the correct stretch.

2-0 out of 5 stars There is very little anatomy in this book
Anyone buying this book hoping to learn what stretching (or overstretching as in my case) does to your muscles will get a 1/4 of a page's worth of text entitled "What Happens When a Muscle is Stretched?"

10 of the 16 chapters in this book consist of a catalog of stretches for specific body areas. Each stretch has a colored drawing of the stretch and its affecting muscles and descriptions of how the stretch is executed properly and sports and injuries for which the stretch would be appropriate.

Chapters 2 through 5 discuss the benefits of stretching, types of stretching, and proper stretching preparation and execution. A safe stretching section might be a good place to have a description of the way that pulling or tearing a muscle (or ligament or tendon) affects the muscle and your stretching capabilities. But instead, the book provides a drawing of a torn muscle and does not describe it at all.

The first chapter actually uses the terms physiology and anatomy and is only 3 pages long. Only half of the chapter talks about anatomy; it includes a paragraph for each: Bones and Joints, Ligaments, Tendons, and two paragraphs for Muscles. There is another picture of the parts of a muscle with no description or reference of any kind to the picture in the text. The other half of the chapter is a definition of stretching and some arguments for stretching.

In short, I did not find the fundamental explanations I was looking for in a book titled "The Anatomy of Stretching."

The extra star comes from the fact that it is a good reference for stretches if that is what you're looking for.

3-0 out of 5 stars not what I had hoped
Its a good book but just good. I'm a pilates instructor and see a lot of clients with injuries and I had hoped to find more new stretches, which I didn't. If you don't know any stretches this good. This is also good in the respect of muscle break down and which muscles work together. Overall not a bad book to have in my collection but I will keep searching for something more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I love the drawings that indicate what muscle or muscle group that is stretched...this book is just what I needed to releave muscle tension! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Reference
This was a wonderful reference to my Anatomy and Physiology course.I am a pre-nursing student, however I felt overwhelmed due to the fact that many people in my class had a health background and seemed to get A&P right off the bat!It turns out that there were still many like me that were not as knowledgable and still needed assistance (other than our required text Anatomy and Physiology, 8th Ed. Marieb).

The topics covered were very clear, perfect amount to refresh what you learned from the textbook and lectures of class. The material is straightforward, no useless material at all and the illustrations were detailed and helpful for a quick review. The end of each chapter had review questions, fill in the blank and multiple choice. This is what saved me from losing my cool when I took A&P.I took the same professor for A&P I and II, but for some reason he changed his teaching style and testing COMPLETELY during Anatomy II!It through the whole class off, most people were either receiving D's and C's.This was very stressful, but I felt that Barron's Anatomy and Physiology The Easy way helped to keep my nerves calm, adapt to my professor's new teaching, and still maintain my A.This is where the end of chapter review questions really helped to reinforce what I read.I really do appreciate the guarantee on the front cover, as it was one that kept me sane during this course!

This book is the recommended book for a NYS license review class.I have been working with a group of my fellow students at New York College for Health Professions. We haven't started the class yet, but find the tests in the book to be an extremely helpful way to practice for eht state license exam for Massage Therapy. I highly recommend this book!!

This is the first book I've purchased in the Easy Way series, and so far I am very impressed. All you have to do is read through the first chapter and you can see how well laid out the book is. It's almost like it's laid out in cliff note form; a condensed version of a textbook. Relatively easy to understand, great layout, and great array of topics covered in good depth. It's hard to get bored because there are no fluff paragraphs; every one has somethin important in it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful study aid
I'm a first-year medical student, so I didn't buy this book to study for the boards (at least not yet...) I was told that it would be a helpful supplement for my anatomy course, and it really is! It spends a lot of time describing the pathological states associated with all the anatomy that we're learning, which helps me put things in perspective - and also helps me with exam questions that involve injuries, e.g. "What muscle actions would be affected by a mid-shaft fracture of the humerus?"It's something that I could maybe figure out on my own if I had a really functional knowledge of the anatomy of the arm, but it helps to have that knowledge spelled out for me.

I also like that the book focuses on anatomy instead of going on lengthy excursions to explain related concepts from histology or biochemistry. For instance, the section about kidneys mentions the context of nephrons and loops of Henle in the gross anatomy of the kidney but doesn't spend a few pages explaining how nephrons work. For that reason this would make a lousy textbook, but I think it makes a really useful study aid for anatomy specifically.

I wish the diagrams in the book were a little more descriptive or more labeled, though - when I study with this, I usually have to keep an anatomy atlas next to me to see a picture of what this book is describing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good primary review of anatomy.
The good thing about this book in comparison w/ a lot of other review books like bRS and HY i that it manages to give a good introduction and understanding of the material without being too long (like BRS) or being so broad that it requires a separate source for understanding (like HY).
The guy who wrote this is the same guy in the video lectures for Kaplan USMLE Step 1 in many ways this is a summary of the Kaplan Step 1 Anatomy book, which is THE primary resource for anatomy boards review.
I'm currently using this for coursework and it provides a good background on some facts I have missed, as well as helping fill in gaps in my understanding.
I haven't taken Step1yet but when I do I don't think I'll even read the Kaplan anatomy book and will go straight to this instead. Memorizing the whole book is too much for boards review, but one would do just fine learning the clinical correlates and the images I think.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd Had It at the Beginning of Gross - Forget BRS
Not a perfect book, but organized the best way to facilitate learning Gross in med school.BRS has a lot more info, but the extra stuff is low to no yield.Personally, I found the muscle tables for the UL & LL to be awkwardly arranged, but I suppose everyone has their own preferred way of charting out muscles. The clinical correlations in this book are money, & this was the only source I found that could make autonomics (especially in the abdominal & pelvic regions) make sense.Great book, worth the money. It obviously won't help you for the lab practical, but for the written portions of your exams this is a lifesaver. For the incoming freshmen med students (or newly christened freshmen) who haven't figured this out yet - you're more than likely not going to have time to read through whatever monster of a textbook your professors recommend.Maybe go through your campus bookstore's stock first to compare this to other guides out there, but I imagine this book's format benefits you most for this particular course.Use this & your dissector, & I guarantee you'll blow Gross out of the water.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reality
Good USMLE step 1 anatomy books are really tuff to come by, and, unfortunately, this book is one of the best on the market.Lets face it, it is a low yeild topic that is really tough to review, and if you take this book at face value, you are going to be wasting a lot of time reading about minute details that don't matter. Each chapter is really bogged down in picky details about the orientation and placement of structures within the body, which means that you are going to need to spend some time to go through this book in its entirety. The good news is that there is a much easier way to study for USMLE step 1 anatomy using this book. Each chapter has boxes that gives clinical scenarios about how an anatomic problem might present.I had no anatomy question on step 1 that wasn't covered in these boxes!Know them well, and you will do well on step 1's anatomy!I also recommend looking at the radiographic pictures in this book.I found this book to be a little light on images, but it covered everything that was on the test.In summary, if you choose this book, don't get booged down in remembering every detail after reading each chapter, but make sure that you know the clinical presentations and the images really well!

3-0 out of 5 stars not the best step 1 anatomy review
I like the small clinical correlations provided in the text, but the outline format was too wordy and dry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best anatomy texts to own!
Netter's is a classic and this particular text is great for the healthcare professional in medicine, nursing, and related areas. This book is especially good to use as a review during clinical rotations. Furthermore, this publication is well organized and the illustrations are superb; what else would you expect from Netter? If you need a compact reference for anatomy, this is a great investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE!
This is the best book ever. Illustrations are perfect, The tables come with their own summaries which makes it so much easier to digest the information. A huge plus, it is that the illustrations are right on top of the concept discussed which makes it easy to understand what they talking about! Perfect aid for exam review to be used in conjunction with BRS Gross anatomy and an Atlas for more enhanced details. Frankly a perfect 5 stars for this book...A good value for money!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars USEFUL
As a medical student, this book comes very handy. The information is very organized and it certainly helps in placing all the copious amount of information in a very organized way. I would strongly recommend everyone to invest and purchase this book. Finally, the clinical information placed alongside the basics of anatomy are truly helpful and a definite plus.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great overview
It has a lot of the basic anatomy as well as pathology... very interesting to flip through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best anatomy book that I have used!
I am a medical student, and found this anatomy book the perfect thing for reference on my clinical rotations. The pictures are wonderful, and it includes "clinical correlations" pages in each section, with pictures specific to certain diseases and explanations of the disease processes/physiology.Honestly, it's much better than any anatomy book I used in undergrad or med school.A must for the med student who needs some brushing up as well as good illustrations! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Strength Training, Not About Swimming Technique
I was looking in Swimming Anatomy for help with swimming technique, but what I found were strength training exercises for swimmers. If that is what you are looking for, then this is perfect. The illustrations are fantastic. I've already begun incorporating some of the exercises into my training regimen.

What I really like is that the book doesn't just tell you the exercises you ought to be doing, but gives safety tips, some of which I could have used years ago when I first began training. I wish the book had talked more about how to improve technique as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Swimming Anatomy
It is a great book,as for beginners as for elite swimmers. Excellent pictures and perfect explanations provide great possibilities to schedule and plan workouts not only at gym, but also at any dryland activities

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous addition to dry land training for all levels of swimmers
As a U.S. Master swimmer, I'm always looking for ways to improve my times. This book is awesome with the examples of dry land training to accompany your swim workouts. I even bought one for my favorite coach! It lists the exact muscles used for each stroke and suggestions for dry land training to strengthen those muscles and the opposing muscles for balance too. It is a must for all swimmers.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book for allSwimming
Swimming Anatomy is well written and easy to follow for me, a physical therapist, and the clients I work with. There are sections that cover all strokes, specific strokes, and general information.Of the most help, are sections that point out where cheating can occur for the swimmer. These have been helpful for me to share with my son, a swimmer, to help him be his best.In summary, well worth it for the swimmer and professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for coaches, trainers, and swimmers!
Ok swim coaches, go ahead and buy this book. The description of the exercises is good, the anatomical diagrams of the muscles worked in each exercise, and how it relates to swimming is worth every dime this book costs.

I've read weight lifting books for swimmers, and they are usually generic in content, or they are written by coaches who don't explain the "why's".

I've got a former swimmer who consults this book before every session in the gym; her personal trainer saw the book and ordered one for his center.Use the "Look Inside" feature here on Amazon, and the content will impress you.

Coaches should coach, and by that they should be able to explain the "why's" of what they want the kids to do, too many coaches abdicate that role of teacher. If you get the athlete to buy into what they are doing and why they are doing it, they have longer term success. This book will help take a step towards that goal of being a better coach.

4-0 out of 5 stars Anatomy for Strength and Fitness Training
I am studying to complete my Master Trainer at the moment and have found this book to be invaluable, all PTs and Gym Instructors should use this book and the Institutes should promote it, it is easy to use, very practical and you get a visual understanding of all muscle groups and how the exercises that you may prescribe will help your client.Invaluable in my opinion.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great if you are analitical
This is one of those books that I consider great and helpful however those who are not of too analytical nature and those ofmore coleric nature will be kind of bored I'm afraid. In any case one of needed and good resources in your fitness and muscle gain library

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb guide to resistance training
From the illustrations to the detailed explanations this is a superb guide. Found it as one of the best read for showing in great detail the muscles involved in essentially every possible core exercise. If you are serious about resistance training or want to learn more this book is it. Not overwhelming just GOOD

The "CURE" for the Common Workplace

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have reference for those who care about fitness
The muscles fascinate me. And when I plan my workouts, I like to plan them according to the needs of my muscles. For example, if my back is bothering me, I try and plan exercises that will soothe and strengthen my back muscles and not further injure them.

If I want more strength in my upper body, I want to train the muscles that will help me accomplish this in the fastest, most efficient manner. That's why I find this book so helpful.

The book shows you all of the muscles that a person uses in most all compound and isolated weight bearing exercises. Also you'll find the muscles used in yoga and stretching, fitness in general. So it's a book for everyone.

Exercising without knowing what you're doing, what muscles you're working, is not a good idea. It's more fun and more productive when you understand what muscles you're working and exactly how to work them to get the most benefit. That's why you need this book.

There are other books on muscular anatomy. But I find this one to be the best.

You'll discover how often and for how long you'll need to workout to accomplish your own unique goals. You'll also learn how to deal with injuries. I was a bit surprised, however, that the book failed to give modifications for many of the exercises. Unfortunately, most books of this type have the same failing. I guess it's expected the reader will know the modifications. Fortunately, I do. I hope you do to. If not, you need to invest in a book that shows the different modifications for those with injuries or limitations.

I suggest you read at least the first part of the book. Then you can skim the rest if you like. But carefully read the information about the muscles and exercises you're going to do. It's not a book you'll necessarily want to read cover to cover. And, you won't necessarily need to.

But you will want to refer to it often. So always keep it handy. Keep in in your gym bag or your workout room and use it when planning your workouts for the week.

The exercises in the book are mostly using your own body weight or simple free weights. Only a few use machines. So you can select the ones you want and for which you're equipped.

This is an excellent reference and I highly recommend it to you.
