Mesmerizing!
I purchased Maya (headnotes of chocolate and vanilla) and since Ibought this product, I use only this one and have used none of my other perfumes.This scent is entrancing and gives you a great feeling.I notice that others comment on this scent a lot.This is aromatherapy at its best.Mara

Beautiful, informative, and fragrant
I bought the original book from the Metropolitan Museum and thoroughly enjoyed it. The oils are of excellent quality. I had been working with aromatherapy and this book certainly broadened my knowledge. Then a friend gave me another copy for a birthday gift. As much as I like it, two was more than I needed (my duplicate is for sale).

Smells like a winner!
After reading Perfume : The Art and Science of Scent by Cathy Newman, RobbKendrick, I was hooked on wanting to know more about the fragranceindustry.I purchased this book because it's about fragrance itself ratherthan bottles, etc.This is a lovely book, although it does not go intogreat depth about the subject.But I don't think it was meant to.It's acoffee table book.However, the nicest surprise about the book are the 8fragrances that come with it.I must say, I purchased the book because ofthe fragrances but I never thought they would be as nice as they are.I amvery particular about fragrance and I find these to be absolutely splendid- and very French.They remind me of the little mini fragrance sets I'vepurchased from time to time of French lines such as Gerlain, Givenchy andGres.The whole package is well worth it if you, like me, love fragrance. ... A lot like many other picture book histories
What I specifically liked was some of the black marble sculptures pictured
of the first Brutus.
The book has the standard history of Rome with the Etruscans, and Carthage.
Having read some recent history of Rome during the Caesars,
I know that it glosses over a lot of detail,
to just give an overview. Ancient Rome like ancient Egypt might be a
place to visit, but I doubt few modern people could stand to live
there.

Wonderful book to really understand Ancient Rome

I picked this up for my almost 8 year old for summer learning.I think I'm enjoying it more than he his.I've learned so much.We have some other books on Ancient Rome, but this book goes into more detail with short chapters.

Another Reader's Digest(ion).
This is a good book for those that are just coming to explore the Ancient World of the Mediterranean.Rome came to dominate that world and influences us even today.It is not purely by acident that we have a Senate, and that many of the buildings in Washington, D. C. resemble Greco-Roman buildings, nor that we have a republican form of government.It all comes from and through Rome.This book will give the beginning explorer information that can stand as a beginning point to mark the beginning of the exploration of this ancient culture that still influences us today.But that is its limitation, too.

An engaging drama of Roman times
From a legendary prince's journey across the sea to an African general who travels with painted war elephants, the story of the ancient Roman world's history needn't be a dry one: not with Ronald Mellor and Marni McGee's ANCIENT ROMAN WORLD in hand. Yes, there are the usual primary sources lending to a research paper; but there's also the lively overtone missing from many similar coverages on the topic, using that material to create an engaging drama of Roman times.

Mixed?
I am a costume student and I adore this book. However my professor said that is simply the authors renderings of historic costumes. So if you are looking for secondary research it is helpful. But do not use it for primary research.

Better then most
I have purchased this book with other publications covering the same topic. Among them this is the best, providing good illustrations, some in great colors and specifics. I can still think of improvements, but I guess this is not a very popular subject and not many collective sources exist, specially in English. I would hope the publication will get an upgrade in the near future to include further discoveries in recent times about what and how people wore in the past centuries and where. There is a great lack of material covering the VII - XI. Centuries in Europe and Asia.

Great Book
This book has pictures and descriptions of costume from Anatolia to South America - it's really worldwide. Unfortunately, the major focus is on Europe, since it's based on two classical european illustrators. But it's a good choice for those who want to have an idea of different and non-european's costume through the ages.

I have read The story of Anient Rome that goes from the Punic Wars all the way to Julias Cesar. This book is great because it conclued all the details. Deeply, deeply disappointed
This book represents the nadir of world history: wide-ranging, superficially impressive, and totally devoid of real scholarship. "Documents in World History" seemed like an excellent resource for a world history course. However, it is written by people who are obviously unqualified.

For a good compendium of primary documents for a world history course, I would recommend "World History" by Howard Spodek (the accompanying supplements, listed on the publisher's website, are promising as well).

The first things which surprised me was the poor production quality of this book. For the ridiculous price, one would expect at least a few color photos. But beautiful artwork is rendered in stale, pixellated black and white. I imagine this book was published more for the sake of profit than scholarship.

The authors of "Documents in World History" fail utterly to show which documents are important, and which are just curiosities. The entry for Cyrus the Great fails to show this king's mythical status in Iran and even in Greece, which idolized Cyrus despite his attempts (and those of his descendants) to conquer Greece.

The sections on China are pathetic. The authors do not have any understanding of Confucianism or Chinese literature.

The greatest writer in the Chinese language, Su Shi, has only one poem in this collection. Yet that gives the authors an opportunity to display their total ignorance of China, its language, and even the fact that Chinese people have a surname and a given name. Su Shi has his name misspelled as "Sushi". Another important writer, Bai Juyi, has his name morphed into Bo Zhuyi, which can be quite confusing because "Ju" and "Zhu" are totally different in Chinese. This may seem like nitpicking, but imagine if the authors had misspelled the names of Shakespeare AND Dickens because they couldn't tell the difference between the letters "z" and "k". ... Read more

This book has a greater gift to give
I read this along with Mr. Casson's "The Ancient Mariners"; it was an excellent accompaniment to that volume, which is lacking the abundant illustrations that are included in this book. Along with providing a complete, unbroken (as we know it) timeline of the evolution of shipping and development of ancient men-of-war such as the Trireme, Quinquereme, sixes, sevens, etc. the greater gift of this book as I see it is it will teach people how to look at the art. With every single example in this book are numerous references to fine detail that the artists included which are picked out and described by Mr. Casson. One of the first things I learned in Art History was that the living conditions contemporary to a society are ALWAYS reflected in the art, which is why there are so many sculptures and mosaics referenced here. Another unexpected thrill from this book was the absolutely fabulous color plates included, depicting among other things some of the finest photography I have ever seen of the Greek red figure/black figure vases. All the photos, with very few exceptions, are top notch. Absolutely one of the most enjoyable books I have found in quite some time.

captivating information
In this captivating account of travel by sea, the author provides the origins of the boat, the vessel, the trireme and the supergalley. He writes about the importance of this means of communication and travel in the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia. Widely illustrated in black and white, the book includes a short bibliography albeit with very useful titles. Recommended for its wealth of information.

A really fun history book with lots of cool pictures.
I checked out this book from the library, and am enjoying it so much that I'm buying a copy.If you love practical, how-it-was-done histories, you'll really like this book. The chapter on triremes is my favorite sofar, partly because of the description of these amazing ships, and partlybecause of the accounts of deeply stupid naval blunders on the part of thegreeks.Best of all, there are tons of pictures, including reconstructionsof several ancient ships. More exciting than a lot offiction, funnier than many comics

This is just about the best, funniest book I've read all year--who would have expected this from a book on the ancient Egyptian World?

I'm not an expert on this subject but the writing has the ring of truth and seems to be well-researched.

The authors have a gift for making old topics seem this-minute relevant.
For instance, Egyptian priesthood: "Plucking out your eyebrows and eyelashes may sound painful., but being a priest had advantages.For one thing, you didn't have to pay taxes..." Or, on fashion: "So what would an Egyptian Fashion magazine look like (other than the fact it would be written on papyrus, need only one issue every thousand years or so, and could only be read by a few people since only aobut 1 percent of Egyptians could read?)"

I think the ho-hum title and amazingly dull cover are like displaying a perfect rose in a milk bottle, but you can't have everything.
