4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Good book. Easy to follow and understand.I think there are too many unnecessary "generalized" examples in the text. For example the author will explain that the cylinder tanks should be turned off during machine use so you will know if the pipeline pressure is lost. Then he will put an example (this is my example)in such as...."one case occured when the anesthesia provider left the cyclinder tank on and lost pipeline supply during the case. He wasn't aware until the cylinder ran empty."I guess this isn't bad, but I don't think the examples add anything to the content.
Otherwise, the book is great!!! Would recommend.

3-0 out of 5 stars Necessary But Could Be So Much Better
Dorsch and Dorsch's Understanding Anesthesia Equipment is simply the most thorough book on anesthesia equipment out there that I am aware of. You will find most of the general basics of anesthesia equipment in Barash's Clinical Anesthesia and even more summary books like Stoelting's Basics of Anesthesia) and Morgan & Mikhail's Clinical Anesthesiology. Nevertheless, those books tend to not give you the ins-and-outs of all of the various equipment out there. Dorsch & Dorsch provide very detailed information ad nauseum. However, the endless black-and-white diagrams and black-and-white photos (though it appears very accurate) make the book very difficult to find the precise information that you are looking for. And the black-and-white diagrams tend to be much more difficult to understand than is necessary. For a book that has been through so many revisions and costs well upward of a hundred bucks, I would expect some color photos and some better constructed color diagrams.

The book does seem thorough, but is simply so much more difficult to use than it needs to be. Using Dorsch & Dorsch as a base text, we are strongly in need of a full revision aimed at formatting, photo, and diagram revisions.

The website included in the book offers a searchable text and a test bank. The search engine on the text is poor and very difficult to use. I find myself going to the chapter of interest and using a ctrl-f browser-based search of the page. The online quizzes are the exact same as is found at the end of each chapter. I have taken about half of the quizzes and have found errors in the online-based quiz bank in approximately half of those that I took. In need of some quality control. Nevertheless, I am appreciative of the online access to the text.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I am sad that this will be the last volume by authors I have relied on since I began in anesthesia in 1981. This is my third purchase of one of their works but I must say that I am dissappointed. Much of the charm of earlier editions (I own1st and 4th) seems to be missing and there seems to be a reliance on manufacturer's supplied illustrations. Explanations and diagrams seem to come directly from the manufactuer.

That being said I would still recommend this book to students (both SRNAs and Resident physcians)as a required text. This book will alow you to be competent to trouble shoot a system while waiting for BME to arrive,or for you to feel confident to swap a machine in the middle of a case. It gives you a familiarization of much adjunct equipment before you use it the first time. It apprises you of possible hazards and deals with evnvironmental issues in anesthetizing locations.

Not their best work, but have not seen anyone else consistently cover this topic over the span of their work. A replacement will be hard to find, and future practitioners will suffer with their retirement.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better off?
An inevitable must for all new residents coming into the world of anaesthesia and medical technology.
Each new edition of the book gets more and more modern equipment oriented - losing out on the simplistic educational value of the older equipment. The gradual loss of the Non-rebreathing valves, from the second edition followed by Goldman vaporizer, EMO, OMV etc has reduced the level of 'ease of understanding' for fresh residents. Indeed, the focus on high tech is a drawback for practice of field/military/third world anaesthesia. There is something to be learnt from the old Ward, Ehrenwerth or even the Farman for youngsters.
Other than this, an excellent & comprehensive textbook. Could have done with a little more detail on advanced newer technologies being introduced.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
That's not only a complete review about cardiac anesthesiology, it's a complete book about everything around the heart (physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, etc). Even it's not a big book, it is user friendly, going to the essentials without missing anything important.
The autors did a great job, resuming in several chapters cardiac anesthesia and more in a not to long way ideal for the clinician.
Much more better than "a practical approach to cardiac anesthesia" from F. A. Hensley which is unreadable because of the presentation. Kaplan's book is colored with enough images to illustrate the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing
    great atlas

    not to much text

    just enough description....mostly an atlas

4-0 out of 5 stars Image adjustment
    "Atlas of Regional Anesthesia"
If you superimpose the two images of the arm at page 29, figure 3-2 and 3-3, you will see the interception of the median antebrachial cutaneos n with the C5 dermatome. It counteracts the brachial plexus anatomy. C5 don't supply the "median antebrachial cutaneos n".

5-0 out of 5 stars beautifully illustrated guide
This book although pricey covers just about every block one could imagine and does it in a way that shows off all the strengths of the atlas-as-textbook.
After a general chapter on equipment each section is started with a review of the pertinent anatomy of the region followed by descriptions of the various blocks for that region. Each technique is prefaced with a brief discussion of the 'big picture' of the block, then the local anatomy, positioning of the patient, and placement of the needle is covered. There is a nice little concluding paragraph covering gothchas.
Whilst this text is aimed at the trainee/practising anesthetist, others may find it useful. For example fellows in pain management will find all the 'standards' are covered. It's only weakness arises in this context: use of supplemental imaging is not discussed except in facet blocks.

5-0 out of 5 stars lovely text
I am a CRNAP practicing in an ansethesia group that does a great deal of regional anesthesia. We have developed a library of texts to be used for reference/review. This text is the best of the lot with clear concise illustration and excellent text.If you wish to have just one book to use as a reference, this one is it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but kind of cumbersome
First of all, I must say that this is an excellent book to get detailed information when you are in a bind in the OR.But the problem I have with this book is that it is sort of in a no-man's-land of materials. If I need the nitty-gritty on a subject, I go to Barash or Miller, but in the OR, I only need to get to the stuff I seem to have forgotten, so I go to Ezekiel. Mass General falls somewhere between too much information for the OR, and not enough information for home use.I've also found it rather difficult at times to find things with the small, cramped print. (Not to mention that it doesn't fit as easily as Ezekiel in the back pocket of your scrubs)
Undeniably, this is a good book with a wealth of information, but I don't understand why people rely on it so heavily.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the O.R.
This book seems to be the icon for O.R. pocket references in Anesthesiology.

I carry this book with me to the O.R. almost daily for an available quick-read before an add-on case. The sections are set in a systematic and logical fashion, making review and reference quick. It's seen on almost every resident's anesthesia cart, and then the cover is usually well-worn from frequent use.

A very good book, but not intended for board review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anesthesia from A to Z
"Clinical Anesthesia Procedures of the Massuchussets General Hospital" offers concise yet thorough coverage on all aspects of anesthesia. From preoperative visit to basic airway management, from fluid requirements of the surgical patient to specific considerations on cardiac, respiratory and liver diseases, this book has it all in an easily accesible way, especially when your above the "blood-brain barrier".I would especially recomend the chapter on resuscitation of trauma and burns victims, because of the thorough coverage of the subject, better than in many surgical textbooks I have read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Teaching Tool and Reference!
I have over 15 years of experience as an anesthesiologist at the prestigious Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut.I've seen it all; however, this text challenged me.I highly recommend it, and everypracticing MD and CRNA should have a copy to review and use as a teachingtool and guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the only book you'll need in anesthesia!
This book encapsulates all the necessary information for clinical practiceof anesthesia. It also includes MANY charts and protocols for drugs, malignant hypothermia, ACLS, etc.I can't enter the OR without it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great peds anesthesia handbook
This is a concise problem oriented handbook of peds anesthesia.Unlike other similar references, this handbook offers a somewhat different, albeit more practical approach to anesthetic care for children.Rather than illustrate how to do a tonsillectomy, or how to do a ureteral reimplant, this book addresses braoder issues that can be applied to a vast array of surgical procedures. For example, there is a chapter that deals with the anesthetic considerations of children with neuromuscular diseases such as DMD, CP or myelomeningocele. There are chapters that look at such diverse topics as approaches to managing children with congenital heart disease as well as children with a URI.What I like about this book is that it focuses on anesthetic management issues of children with various disease processes as opposed to simply managing the surgery. While knowledge of the surgical procedure is very important, any competent peds anesthesiologist knows that not every tonsillectomy carries the same considerations. If we approach our care in that way, I believe that we risk becoming technicians as opposed to physicians.

This is a great little reference for trainees. It also would work well for attendings who need a quick review of relevant pediatric anesthesia topics. The burn and trauma chapters could stand to be revised in the next edition. ... Read more
