Product Description
Anesthesia Crash Course is uniquely positioned to address the needs of new trainees in anesthesia. This book is written in a conversational tone, avoiding unnecessary jargon and distilling the key concepts of anesthesia into easy-to-remember tidbits - an approach in increasing demand by medical students and junior physicians.

The audience for this book is chiefly new anesthesia residents, interns, medical students who rotate through anesthesia services, and nurse anesthetists. By demystifying the world of anesthesia, it provides a welcome resource to medical students and RNs who are considering additional training in this popular but poorly understood specialty. Surgical residents who feel they're not up to speed with what's happening on the other side of the "ether screen" would certainly also benefit from reading Anesthesia Crash Course.

New anesthesia trainees face an extremely daunting learning curve. As they progress through training, they will read longer and more detailed treatises on every aspect of modern anesthesia. It is not realistic to imagine that someone might finish such a book in the first week of his or her training! Anesthesia Crash Course wil serve as a bridge between a trainee's pre-anesthesia experience and more formal training. It can be read in the last month of internship, or in evenings while completing the first few weeks of anesthesia training. It can also serve as a medical student's accompaniment for a two-week anesthesia elective. ... Read more

Product Description

The ability to interface patient monitors directly to a computer, and generate a clinical record has existed for over 20 years. However, the acceptance of comprehensive electronic medical records in anesthesia has been slow to develop. Experts anticipate this reluctance is changing because of enhanced patient care through the use of detailed health information record systems. Anesthesia Informatics provides the health informatician and administrator with a comprehensive overview of this blossoming technology. With contributions from leaders in the field, this user-friendly guide addresses how this technology has enhanced both the need for and the ability to collect and apply data in an acute care setting. It also offers invaluable insight on the business implications and the rationales required to make a purchase decision. Each section outlines need to know information to help the reader with the implementation and utilization of an Anesthesia Information Management System. Useful case scenarios focus on the ideal components (anesthesia record, business rationale, communication, collaboration, and training) of a fully automated record-keeping system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable resource
The pocket sized Anesthesia Emergencies is a valuable resource for avoiding complications and providing quick response to multiple kinds of anesthetic emergencies. Keith Ruskin and Stanley Rosenbaum have brought together a group of medical contributors, all experts in their selected fields. Each of the 15 chapters from cardiovascular to pediatric to neurological emergencies provides information on presentation, diagnosis, management, prevention and risk factors. Skilled practitioners will find the bullet point checklists clear and concise, with critical information highlighted. Coincidentally I recently read Atul Gawande's newest book, The Checklist Manifesto, which praises the use of checklists in aviation to prevent flight emergencies. Gawande's research in medicine has proven that using checklists in the operating room reduces the rates of infection and preventable deaths. Using the procedures and checklists in Anesthesiology Emergencies is exactly what Gawande advocates to improve safety and reduce medical errors. The information in this book is invaluable and I highly recommend this book to all anesthesia providers. ... Read more

Product Description

"[A] welcome addition to the reference materials necessary for the study of nurse anesthesia....The textbook is divided into logical, easy to use sections that cover all areas necessary for the practice of nurse anesthesia....This is a text that is easy to read and able to be incorporated into any nurse anesthesia chemistry and physics course.I would recommend this textbook to any program director."

--Anthony Chipas, PhD, CRNA
Division Director
Anesthesia for Nurses Program
Medical University of South Carolina

At last. . . a combined chemistry & physics nursing anesthesia text.

This textbook offers combined coverage of chemistry and physics to help students learn the content needed to master the underlying principles of nursing anesthesia. Because many graduate nursing students are uncomfortable with chemistry and physics, this text presents only the specific content in chemistry and physics that relates to anesthesia. Written in a conversational, accessible style, the book teaches at a highly understandable level, so as to bridge the gap between what students recall from their undergraduate biochemistry and physics courses, and what they need to know as nurse anesthetists.

The book contains many illustrations that demonstrate how the scientific concepts relate directly to clinical application in anesthesia. Chapters cover key topics relating to anesthesiology, including the basics of both chemistry and physics, fluids, a concentration on gas laws, states of matter, acids and bases, electrical circuits, radiation, and radioactivity.

With this text, students will benefit from:

  • A review of the math, chemistry, and physics basics that relate to clinical anesthesia
  • A conversational presentation of just what students need to know, enabling a fast and complete mastery of clinically relevant scientific concepts
  • Heavy use of illustrations throughout chapters to complement the text
  • End-of-chapter review questions that help students assess their learning

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction
This is an excellent book for those veterinary technology students who are learning or may not know all aspects of anesthesia. This book is an easy read while still giving thorough explanations of drugs, monitoring, and equipment. It does not cover exotics, just dogs and cats. However, if you are new to anesthesia and analgesia, I highly recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful for beginners
I am a student and found this book very useful in regards to the anesthesia equipment section. This section was succinct but covered all of the major concepts. There were several diagrams which were very useful, and helped me to understand and apply the basic concepts. The othersections of this book are not as useful but are also well written.Thisbook has a lot of charts which are extremely useful for reference.Inconclusion, this book has useful sections and is a good reference, but inmy opinion will not serve as the sole anesthesia reference for veterinarystudents or practicioners. ... This is a concise, accessible introduction to the essentials of anesthesia, suitable for medical students, junior doctors, nurse anesthetists, and all operating theatre staff. It provides a brief, broad overview of the science and practice of anesthesia without overwhelming the reader with intimidating detail. The first section of the book describes the evaluation of the patient, the different approaches to anesthesia, and the postoperative care of the patient in pain. The next section introduces the essentials of physiology and pharmacology and their role in understanding the principles of anesthesia. The final section presents a step by step description of clinical cases, ranging from the simplest to the most complex. These clinical vignettes give a very real introduction to the practicalities of anesthesia and will give the non-anesthetist physician an idea of how to prepare a patient for a surgical procedure. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Medical Student Text
After reading two favorable reviews I purchased this book for my Kindle (Please Amazon publish more Anesthesia texts on Kindle). I quickly read through this book realizing early that the depth of the text was on par with medical student level education. If the "Baby Miller" (Miller and Soelting's Basics of anesthesia) is held as the the basic text for CA1 (Clinical Anesthesia year 1) residents, then this book falls far far short.Any CA1 or even intern depending on this book to get them introduced to anesthesia is behind the power curve and needs to reconsider their chosen profession. On the other hand medical students who would like an introduction to the basics of anesthesia may want borrow this book from the library.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent!
I bought this book during my first semester of nurse anesthesia, and put it on the shelf thinking I would probably only use it when I get to clinicals this summer.I was wrong.

This book has helped me in lab classes, where I've had minimal, vague, fast demonstration and instruction on how to insert central lines.I was even able to discuss things that had not been brought up in class, and people thought the info was valuable.

Worth every penny.Very different than all the other stuff on my shelf, and therefore, it fills a gap the other books leave.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dummies guide to anesthesia
Perfect for those interested in expanding their prior knowledge of the field. The pictures walk you through step-by-step and the humor keeps the boredom from setting in. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the time and money
Somehow the authors have taken the very serious subjects near and dear to the heart of any anesthesia provider and made them dead-on funny -- but truly helpful and informative.I can't you how many times I've been saved by their tips and hints. This is a MUST HAVE reference for the anesthesia student.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anesthesia Unplugged
LOVE this book.It has practical information and tidbits with clearly defined illustrations.Very humerous as it brings it down to earth and does not create the "usual" anesthesia textbook.I recommend it especially to students and anesthesia providers to have as a reference.

1-0 out of 5 stars very little positive
So if i could give 0 stars, i would still give this one star because it will help identify some of your weaknesses for boards. However, the text is *super old*, though most of the material could be considered still applicable. What bothers me is that for $60 (still, even though it was written 10 years ago), they could have at least worked out the extremely large number of type-o's.Not only are there misspellings, there are outright wrong answers, that if i weren't currently educated enough to see them, i might consider what i was learning to be incorrect.

If you want to spend a bunch of money on test questions, i recommend the Barash that received almost 5 stars.Outlining its chapters according to volume of test questions (though targetting anesthesiologists, NOT CRNA's), that book is capable of helping you find your weaknesses, gives actual rationale to the questions (instead of what Nagelhout did in many cases which was basically just say the answer is a because the answer is a).

Additionally, most of Nagelhout's questions are not targeting synthesis of information.Instead, they are low level, memorization questions. When one gets to boards, one should be studying the whys of what one is doing.Memorization is important, but memorizing the answers to these questions doesn't help you in the long run.If you need test question practice, i suggest going to some of the more sophisticated texts to prepare for SEE and boards.

3-0 out of 5 stars good exposure
This review book is good for exposure to alot of different questions. There are a few errors in both the text and the CD-ROM.There are a few questions with miskeyed answer choices but correct rationales, but there are also a few mistyped or misworded questions. This review is good for exposure to alot of questions, and quick rationales (with references to texts), and the CD-ROM is formatted much like the computer testing is set up.My suggestion is if you feel that a question is answered erroneously, look it up, you may be right.

2-0 out of 5 stars Quality Questions- but several errors in CD-ROM
I purchased this book in June of 2000 from Amazon.com.I've been told the more questions you are exposed to, the better you get at answering them. The book and CD provided a nice variety of questions, with brief rationale for correct answers, but be careful of the CD-ROM. In several instances, the answers were incorrectly programmed. It hasn't been the best review I've seen, but it is one of the few with a CD-ROM. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Must have' for the academic anesthesiologist.
This is one of my favorite textbooks of anesthesia.I have always thought of it as the American version of the classic British textbook Scientific Foundations of Anaesthesia by Cyril Scurr.Like Scurr's textbook, Hemmings explores the scientific fundamentals that lie at the core of the field of anesthesiology. There is a detailed examination the physiology, chemistry, biology, and even mathematics of anesthesia. This is not the textbook for someone looking for clinical guidance on a complex case. This is the book to turn to if one is interested in exploring the `why and how' of anesthesia. The figures are among the finest I've ever seen in any textbook. The editing was well done and there is good chapter to chapter consistency. For any academic anesthesiologist this is a "must have" textbook.

3-0 out of 5 stars Old book
    Careful!! :
This book is an OLD edition from 1989, and it was classified as a fairly new edition.
The book is in good condition, otherwise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Recommended reading
We're using this text for our anesthesia course at vet school. So far it's been a good resource!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good simplistic view
This book is small and compact so you can carry it anywhere. It explains enough without being overly boring and excessive. Very Good Book to keep for a long time

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful clinic reference
This book is a excellent resource for our Practice.(mixed Practice). It has really good, easy to find information. All the species that we deal with are covered and all types of anaesthesia from local and regional right through to general anaesthesia. This book is useful for new clinicians and those with lots of experience. There are lots of different options for anaesthesia so you aren't limited to what you've always done. I think this is a very handy guide to have on your Practice shelves.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book For Students
I am a second year veterinary student. My roommate bought the standard anestesia text-Lumb and Jones and I bought Muir.We both ended up using Muir because it is much more comprehensive at this level then Lumb andJones (which is an excellent reference but a bit overwhelming for anintroductory anesthesia course). In my experience Muir had all thenecessary information laid out in an easy to read format, as well as lotsof charts which helped to pull everything together. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Niche book for beginners
Misleading title. Limited audience. More accurate to say Secrets for begining Srnas. Quick and tidy explanations of questions.Answers explained in 3-4 very easily understood sentences. Fundamental " need to know now" info with Internet and bibliography resources listed at the back of each chapter for follow-up. A niche book for beginners. Well done book with a limited target audience. Hence, the 2 star review.

3-0 out of 5 stars Anaesthetic nurse Book
Nice compact little number. Have to learn a bit of lingo before reading though to fully understand the acronyms.

4-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat simple
I bought this well into my last year of my CRNA program. I liked its tabbed format and used it occasionally as a simple reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great pocket guide
You have to know the basics already, this is just a pocket guide reminder with no explanation. In that way it is great for on the spot information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pocket Anesthesia
First, Amazon.com was very quick to ship the book.I got a great price also. The book itself has all of the pages laminated and appears very durable. The spiral at times can come loose if allowed to revolve backwards. The size is great because it literally fits into everything; pocket, clinical bag, etc.As far as the book content, it has everything I need to get by.I certainly wouldn't use it to study for an exam, but I has enough content to jog my memory regarding topics and techniques during clinical.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Nurse Anesthesia pocket book!
As a Nurse Anesthesia student, I had been searching for a comprehensive, concise, practical pocket reference tool. My search ended successfully at Lynn Macksey's Nurse Anesthesia Pocket Guide.I carry this guide and the Pediatric pocket guide by Lynn Macksey, with me everyday on my clinical days. It is an awesome and valuable pocket guide. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a staple reference for any anesthesia learner/provider
one of the many books adopted for study during anesthesia training programs. very useful for newbies and existing practitioners.

4-0 out of 5 stars got it finally
I've got the book after a delay, but now it is here it is what I wanted

5-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive and invaluable resource
I am training to be a nurse anesthetist at a top medical school.I need to have the wits of an advanced practice nurse and the knowledge of a med student. This book is an invaluable resource. It's straightforward, but not "anesthesia for dummies".Comprehensive.Everything I need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anesthesia and Co-Existing Disease
This book is a wealth of information on the diseases that are present in the patients you will be anesthetizing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for reference and study
This is now the fourth edition of this textbook that the reviewer has purchased. The first edition was the reviewer's companion during the senior year of medical school and residency training, when the appropriate sections were read whenever encountering patients with one of the discussed diseases. The second edition was the reviewer's most-used texbook during preparation for the anesthesiology oral examination. Most recently, a second copy of this most recent edition was purchased as the required textbook for a resident rotation in preoperative evaluation. This book has a place on the shelf of any anesthesiologist who is preparing for the oral boards or in practice.
The pathologic "horses" are well discussed, which makes this book an excellent starting point for a reasonably bright medical student interested in anesthesiology.A number of "zebras" are also presented, but there is not much detail concerning the "unicorns".The emphasis is a bit heavier on adult diseases than pediatric disease. For the real "unicorns" in adults and children, there arebooks devoted exclusively to the anesthetic implications of uncommon diseases in general, or genetic diseases in particular.

My book was delivered in excellent condition and was not damaged in any way.
Their prices were comparable and I would use "Amazon" again!

3-0 out of 5 stars Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia
used it for class, but does not have all the information you need to know for mock exams.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good value for money
This could be excellent handbook for quick refference with most approved anesthesia techniques described. Exceptionally goodsection on inhalation anaesthesia and required apparatus.
Unfortunatelly the book lacks listing ofall possible protocols and anaesthetic combinations with individual doses.
