Editorial Review

Product Description
The purpose of this monograph is to examine in detail the causes and effects of physiologic changes produced by the subarachnoid injection of local anaesthetics. Techniques of spinal anaesthesia, that is how and where to inject the local anaesthetic and the clinical indications and contra-indications to do so, are not considered. Pharmacologic aspects of spinal anaesthesia are considered only insofar as they relate to physiologic responses. Mode of action of local anaesthetics, a pharmacologic, not physiologic topic, is not reviewed in depth. Factors that govern distribution of local anaesthetics within cerebrospinal fluid and, thus, sensory levels of anaesthesia, involve complexities beyond the scope of this monograph. Because of the well deserved popularity of epidural anaesthesia and because there are indeed several noteworthy similarities with spinal anaesthesia, a chapter on epidural anaesthesia is included that briefly compares physiologic responses to epidural anaesthesia, related but quite different techniques. The subject of this monograph is spinal anaesthesia, with the emphasis on anaesthesia. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rocket in my pocket
Will this tell you everything you need to know in cardiac anesthesia?Well, yes.You should be able to *understand* all the concepts touched on in this book; but for that, you'd need a Hensley at the least.Under no circumstances should this book replace a good cardiac text; it is most effective being used in conjunction with Henseley or Kaplan. If used alone it will only make you a good cardiac technician, but not a cardiac anesthetist.
What this book does very nicely is explain WHY you need to understand these concepts, and provides a framework for organizing all the information available in more detailed texts.WHAT is important here?WHAT should I be worrying about? And, most importantly, WHAT the heck is going on? (it also has the best explanation of protamine reactions I've found yet).Who can't love a text that has section titles like "Prebypass housekeeping, or what obsessive compulsive anesthesiologists love to do"?
Its style is conversational, such that it was the only book I was able to read in the cardiac room itself. It's a bit like having an attending in your pocket. This is the book I recommend that you absolutely get for your cardiac cases, but absolutely never let anyone know you read.I hope that there will be an update soon...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the beginner in cardiac anesthesia
I was extremely intimidated before my cardiac anesthesia rotation, trying to plow through Hensly quickly. I found this book searching for a different reference..
If you're looking for a very quick, down and dirty review, this is a good place to start. As another reviewer has said, a very quick read, written more like a chatty how to book but with all the salient information you need to perform.

3-0 out of 5 stars Basic, but easy to read
I'm a CRNA who has been practicing for one year.I was put in a positon to perform primarily cardiac anesthesia.I purchased this book to enhance what I learned in school and at work.

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who understands the basics of cardiac anesthesia. It is more of a reference for those who are in their residency or first years of anesthesia.

Overall there are probably more comprehensive texts, but it only took me about 4 hrs. to read through this text and I'm not a fast reader. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I loved this book! (I wasn't even interested in anesthesia until I read it.) This book can take a student who knows nothing about anesthesia and turn her into a functioning, knowledgable member of an anesthesia team in a matter of days. Read this book (or at least the first few chapters) the weekend before your start your anesthesia rotation, and finish it by the end of the first week. You will be able to answer questions from the attending, and ask even better ones! It is concise, easy to read, and very high-yield. To add to it, it fits in the back pocket of your scrubs.

The word on the street among Harvard Med students is that there are two textbooks that every med student should have and read cover-to-cover: Weinberg "Pulmonology" and Lilly's cardiovascular text. Now that I have discovered this book, I would say that there are three books, and this "Clinical Manual of Anesthesia" is one of them!

5-0 out of 5 stars very happy
I found this book to be one of the most concise and well written I have come across in my training. There is a tremendous amount of material without any of the filler.I recommend this book to any medical student, non-anesthesia resident or first year anesthesia resident.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage of a huge subject
I thought the book was well organized and covered alot of pertinent subjects and algorithms commonly aked about and seen in everyday anesthesia practice.

Also the fact that the handbook can easily fit into a lab coat pocket makes it a great quick reference while in the hospital.

Although anesthesiology is an enormous subject the pocketbook book fullfills its purpose as a quick
reference. I would recommend it to any fourth year on an anesthesia elective or intern on an anesthesia rotation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anesthesia Review
I think this is a great review( for the 5th edition Miller) Basics of Anesthesia even though it's for the 4th edition book. The concepts are made easy to understand and is a big help in my first year as a student CRNA.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought-stimulating
I really like this book. Its design is atypical for a "question-book" in that the format is not multiple choice; rather, the author(s) intend for the reader to reflect upon their theoretical and practical knowledge-base before formulating an answer. This makes this book thought-stimulating as opposed to standard multiple choice books, which may be good, but you will most assuridly never see those "same" multiple choice questions and answer-options replicated on an actual board exam. One major by-product of the aging baby-boom generation is a surging interest in cosmetic surgery. Although procedures like facelifts and abdominoplasties (the 'tummy-tuck') are considered minimally invasive, the anesthetic protocols and regimens here are often overly complex and unnecessarily toxic.
