Product Description
After the conflict ended in Angola, the country was faced with development challenges in economic and social conditions. The Government needed direction and reforms to encourage private sector participation to meet Angola's vast infrastructure needs in electricity and gas, water and sanitation, transport, and telecommunications.

Private Solutions for Infrastructure in Angola provides an objective assessment of Angola's general environment for private sector participation in infrastructure. The main purpose of the book is to assist the Government of Angola in developing policies and a framework for the promotion of private participation in the rebuilding and development of the country's infrastructure. This book focuses on maximizing the role and contribution of the private sector in infrastructure and it analyzes and documents the barriers, opportunities, and measures to promote private participation in infrastructure over the period 2005-2020. The book also provides a summary of the action plan of the short, medium, and long-term steps to facilitate private sector participation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Discussion of Mbundu Political Philosophy, History
For the Mbundu people of Angola, identity and organization centered traditionally not on state, kingdom, race or ethnicity.Association was based on lineage membership; authority resided with elders of the extendedfamily.

Some societies did exist which bound together people fromvarious families.Hunting societies, for instance, initiated people fromdifferent families, even different ethno-linguistic groups.Politicalauthority and association, however, did not transcend the limits of familyallegiance.Several movements and leaders did aim at establishingauthority that would encompass people from many families, and supersede theauthority of lineage heads.Joseph Miller interprets the dreaded Imbangalainvasions, who terrorized Angola, in light of this objective.

Manykingdoms were established among the Mbundu. On the eve of Portuguesecolonization, however, authority reverted from kings to lineage elders.

Other works on Central Africa include histories by Phyllis Martin, DavidBirmingham and John Kelly Thornton, as well as Miller's Way of Death:Merchant Capitalism and the Angolan Slave Trade, 1730-1830.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Political History of Precolonial West Africa
For the Mbundu, a major ethnolinguistic group of Angola, traditional allegiance and identity did not center on kingdom, nation, race or ethnicity, but on the extended family.Joseph C. Miller convincinglyreconstructs the Mbundu efforts to establish a broader sense of identity, and a wider basis for political power. Some traditional organizationsestablished a basic framework for organization that transcended lineageaffiliation.Hunting societies, for instance, initiated members fromdifferent lineages and even different ethnic groups.Mbundu leaderscontinually tried to legitimize even broader authority that would supersedeallegiance to extended families and encompass members of many lineages. The Mbundu did establish many kingdoms.By the eve of extensive Portuguesecolonization, however, authority and loyalty eventually reverted from kingsto lineage elders.Miller offers great insight into political philosophyand practice in West Central Africa.

For studies of the same region, see works by John Thornton and Jan Vansina, as well as various works on theOvimbundu (related to the Mbundu), and Miller's own The Way of Death:Merchant Capitalism and the Angolan Slave Trade, 1730-1830 ... Read more

Product Description
The book is the first comprehensive study of race relations in Angola. It covers the entire five-century-long relationship between the peoples of Angola and Portugal.Portuguese imperial thinkers asserted that they were unique among European colonizers in their ability to establish and maintain egalitarian and non-discriminatory relationships with tropical peoples. This concept was elevated to a philosophical plateau and given the name Luscotropicalism.Propagated with fervor by Portuguese colonial thinkers, Lusotropical doctrines were widely accepted as being valid by twentieth-century diplomats and political thinkers in both Europe and the United States, many of whom believed that Portuguese colonialism in Africa would continue indefinitely.

The evidence presented in this work indicates that Portuguese rule in Angola was deeply racist. This conclusion is based on a considerable body of data gleaned from archival sources, personal collections, and systematic interviewing of racially diverse Angolans and Portuguese functionaries in the colonial administration and the private sector. Special emphasis is placed on devices that the Portuguese used to delude themselves and others about the realities of their attitudes and behavior as ruling elites. The study concludes with an assessment of the impact of Lusotropical myths on independent Angola. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile read but a bit deceptive
Overall, a good outline of the conflicts within these two nations and the players involved in them. The depth of detail that the author went into was not as thorough as expected, though. The length of the book is deceiving as a considerable percentage of the information is repeated multiple times throughout the course of the book. As well, far too many pages were devoted to describing the colonial era in each country. As the focus of this book was the post colonial period, this task would be better left to the numerous others books dealing solely with the colonial period. Beyond these few limitations, this book was a worthwhile read that did give some interesting insights into this tumultuous period of southern African history. ... Read more
