Product Description
Are soy isoflavones neuroprotective? Just how different is one species of Echinacea from another? Which phytochemicals will be effective as therapeutic agents in vivo? Supported by solid scientific research, Phytochemicals in Nutrition and Health helps provide answers to these and other probing questions concerning the mechanisms of action associated with beneficial phytochemical groups. It examines new areas such as the efficacy and safety of medicinal herbs, the use of biotechnology to manipulate and enhance the phytochemical profiles of various plants, and the pharmacokinetics of phytochemicals in humans. The editors also expand discussion presented in their previous books on phytochemicals. They explore new research on phytochemicals in the Vaccinium family (cranberries, blueberries and bilberries), wine, and oilseeds, and the biological activity of Echinacea in humans. Additional chapters present new information about isothiocyanates, lycopene, carotenoids other than beta-carotene, tocotrienols, and phytoestrogens. Highlighting phytochemicals that have significant potential for promoting health or preventing disease, Phytochemicals in Nutrition and Health expands discussions of appropriate research methodologies and new technologies in this exciting field. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good book for first time Birman owners not breeders
This book is a good book covering the Basics of Birmans but begins to fall short when talking about breeding and the genetics of Birman cats.I love the care/feeding and general information of the book. A true book about breeding however should include pedigrees, history and foundation cats, and include medical information as well. My wife and I have bred Birmans for 11 years and as such have to consider genetic questions whenever we talk about breeding/aquiring another birman. The book also should include online information available for Birmans which is extensive. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Little Book
My husband and I are the proud owners of a very cool, amazingly intelligent Somali cat named Sunday. However prior to acquiring her, we didn't even know what a Somali cat was. Now, we are always eager to learn about their habits, characteristics and needs. This is a very imformative little book with a lot of great colour pictures. We've discovered some new facts and tips about our cat . . . and there are other things mentioned in the book where we just say that is so, so true of a Somali! All in all, we're really pleased with the purchase. It's a great book to have on the reference shelf. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Growing numbers of pet owners are giving their pets dietary supplements in hopes of supporting their health. Many people presume that supplements are safer than drugs, but the reality is that there are very limited safety data on dietary supplements for pets. Many challenges stand in the way of determining whether animal dietary supplements are safe and at what dosage. Supplements considered safe in humans and other species are not always safe in horses, dogs, and cats. An improved adverse event reporting system is badly needed. Also, regulations dealing with animal dietary supplements are in disarray. Clear and precise regulations are needed to allow only safe dietary supplements on the market. This book examines issues in determining safety of animal dietary supplements in general, and the safety of three animal dietary supplements; lutein, evening primrose oil, and garlic, in particular. ... Product Description
The efficient and safe nutrition of farm animals is an important issue in today's food production. This volume reflects these concerns, and looks at consumer requirements and perceptions, as well as dealing with the general nutrition of ruminant and non-ruminant farm species. The papers were originally presented at the 24th University of Nottingham Feed Manufacturers' Conference. The first chapters of the book deal with consumer requirements and consider the changes in consumer perceptions together with human allergic responses. General nutrition is discussed next, with chapters concentrating on legislation, bacterial infections in farm animals, chemical probiosis and the effect of mycotoxins. The water requirements of pigs and poultry are carefully analysed in the next three chapters, and the concluding chapters deal with ruminant nutrition and the effect of performance enhancers and rumen probiosis. This book provides useful information in this fast moving subject and should be a useful reference guide for all those involved in the feedstuffs industry. ... Read more
