Kids today need motivation to eat healthy and exercise.Every day they are surrounded by temptations to eat high sugar, high fat foods. They are constantly tempted to sit and "play" rather than engage in play that involves movement.Despite the best intentions of parents and teachers, childhood obesity rates are skyrocketing. As a nation, we are all bombarded by advertising for unhealthy, quick foods that seem okay in the short-term.But, in the long-term these diets are causing a national epidemic that can impact children physically and emotionally for the rest of their lives. The fun illustrations and creative plot in Zootrition sparks a child's interest to eat healthy and exercise.Ben, an aspiring zookeeper, dreams that he won a certificate to be the zookeeper of his local zoo.He thinks he's doing the animals a favor by giving them fast food every day and installing video games. The animals become very lethargic so the guests stop coming to the zoo. Ben learns that animals, like people, need to eat right and exercise to feel their best.He awakes from his nap, forgets the cotton candy that he so desperately wanted at the zoo, and asks his mom for a nice, crisp, juicy apple. His dream of becoming a zookeeper will takes years to materialize, but the positive effects of a healthy diet and exercise can start right now!

4-0 out of 5 stars a good introduction
I was given this book when I was given my cat, Mara Jade. The book was for 2 main reasons. One was to explain and understand this most loveable breed. The other was to show off my cat's grandfather, who is one of the champion Scottish Folds showcased in the book. It is a good book for new owners.

3-0 out of 5 stars Seems more like a textbook than an earnest owner's manual
I recently bought a Scottish Fold. (Partly because they look so darn cute and partly -- okay mostly -- because of Peter Gether's Norton books.) Being the "completist" that I am (some prefer the term obsessive), I had to buy this book too to make sure all was well with Bradbury (yeah, he's named after the famous author).

Unfortunately, Maggitti's book doesn't really satisfy my passion and curiosity for this fascinating breed of feline.

For one thing, the book seems slightly outdated. And the pages look -- and often read -- like those of a textbook. Plus, the information seems superficial, almost too basic (even for a feline newbie like myself).

In other words, don't expect a lot of passion and humor and a breezy, conversational style. Expect some fairly good information. Expect a slightly detached (read: dry) presentation of facts. Expect a reference book that'll likely sit on your shelf gathering dust once you've flipped through it once.

Since there are very few books available strictly about the Scottish Fold breed, you're pretty much stuck with this book or nothing. And, given that choice, I'd say go ahead and buy this book. It's really not as bad as I'm making it out to be. (But it's not a whole lot better, either.)

The bottom line: Until someone comes along to write an "owner's manual" book as fun as the Scottish Fold breed of cat, I suggest you turn to Peter Gether's three books: The Cat Who Went To Paris...A Cat Abroad: The Further Adventures of The Cat Who Went to Paris and His Human...and The Cat Who'll Live Forever: The Final Adventures of Norton, The Perfect Cat and His Imperfect Human.

4-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for owners of Scottish Fold cats or kittens.
As new owners of this unique breed, we needed a book that explained everything from care to communication and personality. This book has it all.Especially helpful was the section on communication where we learnednot only how to communicate with our new Fold, but also what our Fold wastelling us through his body language. This book definitely helped uswelcome our pet into his new home, and facilitated bonding between pet andowner. ... This has caused increases over the years in non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, hypertension, coronary artery disease, cancer and obesity. Product Description
Please Don't Eat the Animals: All the Reasons You Need to Be a Vegetarian is an exciting and provocative new book on the universal benefits of being a vegetarian.
Authors Horsman and Flowers detail the many reasons for the burgeoning movement toward a plant-based diet in four short, interesting, easy-to-digest sections:
Health:Nowhere is the appeal of vegetarianism reflected more than in health issues. Scientists and doctors have begun drawing the connection between meat-laden diets and consumers most serious health problems.
Environment:Livestock farming accounts for over half of both fresh water and ocean pollution. It significantly affects air pollution, deforestation especially of rain forests and the decimation of wildlife.
Animal Welfare:Animal welfare issues have gained prominence in recent years.Animal rights/ethics courses have emerged on university campuses, even in law schools. Please Don't Eat The Animals reveals the plight of animals on factory farms, a sad and troubling picture indeed.
Religious and Spiritual Injunctions:Fresh and original, this section points to the fact that Christianity, Judaism, and Islam have strong injunctions against cruelty to animals. All Hindus are vegetarians. Mohammed said, "Whoever is kind to the creatures of God is kind to himself." And, according to the Buddha, "The eating of meat extinguishes the great seed of compassion." ... Read more

Short, sweet and full of compelling, scientific data. If you are not ready to hear the truth, don't read this book. But if you are ready to change, live a healthier life and leave a smaller footprint on our planet, read this book...give it as a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars The title of the book says it all!Why are humans so cruel to animals?
I read this book and cried.I had no idea how cruel we treat animals and how dreadful chickens are treated overall.I haven't been able to eat an egg since reading this book and have tears streaming down my face as I am writing this review.Meat, who needs it?That too is disgusting!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother
I purchased this book online, and was quite excited about reading it. I was sorely disappointed. The book was very one-sided and does not give a very accurate representation of the industry. Though I share some of Volpe's beliefs (I am a vegetarian) I encourage people who are interested in this topic to read a different book, FAST FOOD NATION by Eric Schlosser, which is one of my favorites and contains far more information. Volpe's book reads like a dumbed-down version of Scholosser's book crossed with a PETA film (which is just a different kind of misinformation than the meat companies offer us). Volpe's book also ignores the human suffering that accompanies the meat industry, a VERY good reason to be a vegetarian. I wish I had nicer things to say, because I WANTED to like this book. I can't even donate it to the library; I don't want anyone to make the same mistake I did.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Fast Food Craze
When I picked up The Fast Food Craze, I had expected that this book would contain information on the lack of nutritional value of fast food. I assumed this would lead to a discussion about the importance of knowing where food comes from and perhaps the benefits of slow food.

There was a short discussion about the lack of nutrition in fast food noting that such places buy the cheapest products possible to increase profits. However, this information led to a one sided debate about vegetarianism that tended not to focus on the health benefits of a vegetarian diet but on the cruel treatment of animals slated for human consumption. Thus, much of the book included horror stories of animals living in cramped mass facilities and intelligent animals that saved human lives. No where in the book did the author indicate that these horror situations tended to occur in large commercial facilities rather than family farming situations where financial livelihood is synonymous with proper livestock care. Nor did the author point out that often the same types of large commercial facilities are responsible for potentially dangerous genetic manipulation in fruit and vegetables as well as excessive use of pesticides and preservatives used to make these products more attractive.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fallen Angel Reviews
In this refreshing book about living without meat, Ms. Volpe takes us on an exciting yet disturbing tale of our fast food industries. The universal havoc caused by our obsession with meat is pointed out in clear and concise chapters. Filled with true-life stories and a variety of case studies, the focus is on our most commonly consumed farm animals as chickens, pigs, and cows.

In support of her strong and quite opinionated views, Ms. Volpe has included numerous photos. While a few were quite disturbing, one can see how a photo can be so strong and sometimes necessary to illustrate a point. In addition, she has compiled a list of interesting quotes from famous people on the topic as well as updated information from Congress and other governmental bodies. With the most recent facts and figures supporting appalling statistics, one cannot help but think about the current situation. The treatment of animals, the resulting business, and the consumption by the general public needs to be examined further.

Although I have long since wondered at the treatment of farm animals, nothing could have really prepared me for what Ms. Volpe describes the situation to be. I feel that this book should be read by the masses, as only public pressure will improve conditions. The examples she uses forces the reader to think and while being easy accessible, is also thought provoking. In addition, she has included a helpful resource section containing websites and further reading suggestions including cookbooks and magazines. Whether you agree with her views or not, it can be agreed that Ms. Volpe has given us a well-written book on the subject matter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reminder
I have been a vegan since 1988 and read a lot of books on the subjects Tina is writing about. What I like about Tina's book is it brought me back when I worked on an egg farm and when I bought a 1 day old calf from an auction that they were going to kill if someone didn't by it; I was 8 yrs old when I bought that calf.Tina didn't overstate the abuses that go on in farming in fact there is a lot more she could of said but didn't, but this is a great book for someone who is not privy to the harm eating animals causes us and them as well as our precious environment.I think every parent should have their kids read this book; andhopefully the parents might take a peek at it also.
There are many other books that will go into a lot more detail on each subject in her book, but I have yet to find one that puts such emotion and personal connection and her love of animals as this book does.
I wish I read this book when I was younger; their would be a lot less dead animals that would of went through my body and my mind would of progressed at a much younger age about our world.
I think this book should be read by the young and old!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read!
I loved this book. The stories about the animals saving lives were wonderful.I will not eat fast food again, nor will I partake in the cruelty involved in the way animals are raised for food. Why don't most Americans know about these horrors!I was shocked and really enlightened at what goes on inside all the little packages of meat found at the grocery stores, and I highly recommend it to everyone who eats! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative book on Abyssinian cats
I believe I have already reviewed his book.At any rate, it arrived promptly and was in good condition. It is a very informative book on Abyssinian cats which are not like any other kind of cat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Abyssinian Cats
Wonderful book. Takes you through the beginnings of the breed and how it came to North America. Detailed information about standard physical expectations for show; personality traits of the breed; price ranges; how to pick a breeder--questions to ask; how to pick a kitten; important care instructions--physical and emotional; ..... lots of great stuff for the new Aby owner as well as those who have owned cats and/or Abys in the past. Beautiful photos! Great reading! A bit pricey, but worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars People should read books like this BEFORE selecting kitty!
I recommend that anyone considering being owned by an Abyssinian read this book (the info is enlightening for already owned people as well). It covers in easily understood language everything one should know aboutAbyssinian Cats and how to care for them.It is simply enough written tobe understood by children though not boring to adults. It could be used asa teaching tool for children in the home where kitty will live. The authorstarts at the beginning:How to buy the cat, acclimation, caring for it"Forever After," etc.She discusses controversial issues such asdeclawing (I'm personally opposed), grooming, showing, etc.The generalcare information would apply to most cats. But Abyssinians are veryintelligent, loyal, inquisitive and active. If you want a cat that willNOT sit on the refrigerator, then perhaps this book would give the readersome understanding of the personality of the Abyssinian and guide thepropsective cat owner toward making a good decision about whether or not toselect this particular breed or another, less active, breed.Plenty ofgood photos. ... Product Description
According to surveys, the public believes the chickens it is buying are wholesome. "Poultry Inspection: The Basis for a Risk-Assessment Approach" looks at current inspection procedures to determine how effective the Food Safety Inspection Service is in finding dangerous levels of contaminants and disease-producing micro-organisms. The book first describes the history behind the current system, noting that the amount of poultry inspected has increased dramatically while techniques and regulations have remained constant since 1968. The steps involved in an inspection are then described, followed by a discussion of alternative and innovative inspection procedures. It then provides a risk-assessment model for poultry, including sub models for each stage of processing. Risk assessment is used to protect health, establish priorities, identify problems, and set acceptable levels of risk. The model is applied both to microbiological hazards and to chemical contaminants. ... Read more

one of the best little books, great information, magnific pictures and easy to understand care and all aspects for Tarantula breeding and keeping. hope they continue research and publishing more new tips.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tarantulas and other arachnids,Good begginners book
This book was a great help when it came to aspects of arachnid keeping such as feeding, living conditions and mating. This was my first book when I was begginning to keep Tarantulas and it taught me what I needed to know about keeping my pet happy and comfortable. It also was very informative when it came to the biology of the arachnids and explianed about everything from thier fangs to thier spinnerets. The only major problem I found with this book is it's insufficient explaination of spider habits and psychology.Because I was a begginner I wasn't sure how my spider felt and what it's different reactions to events meant. This book is excellent for begginners and I would recommend it to anyone starting out with arachnids although anyone with interests in arachnids behaviour then you should possibly consider a book which concentrates on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars tarantulas and other arachnids
This is a well written, very informative book covering just about all aspects of tarantula care.It is a must for the beginners, and still helpful to the more experienced.Covering the basics of anatomy, husbandry, handling, breeding, etc..Good amount of species specific information, too.Housing requirements for aboreals, opportunistic burrowers, obligate burrowers, is very informative.Great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
I'm new to Tarantula keeping and needed a reference which was well researched informative and easy to understand. Sam Marshall's book is allof these things and more. The books many illustrations are also veryhelpful. Great for newcomers to the hobby.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tarantulas and Other Arachnids bySamuel D. Marshall
This is a brilliant book if you have not owned a arachnid before, as it tells you a lot about keeping your first one. Is has a good chapter on foodfor them, and it tells you how to house and breed them very clearly andsimply. Probably the only bad point is that it specialises in tarantulas sothere is nut very much information on other arachnids such as huntingspiders, Windscorpions etc. but if you want to keep a tarantula it is avery cheap and good book, which will definately help you. ...
