5-0 out of 5 stars Very Thorough, if you're getting or just got a dog, get it !
Among the several books that we got just before and after we recently adopted a rescue dog, this was truly the stand-out. It covers virtually everthing you should consider in finding the right dog, to good advice on basic training.

We highly recommned it (and adopting a rescue dog vs. buying one).

5-0 out of 5 stars Canine seal of approval!
This book saved my life! My owners are nice people, but they probably wouldn't have figured out that they were right for me if they hadn't found this book first. The shelter labeled me as "HYPER" and "aggressive with other dogs" - but thanks to the tips and tests in this book, my owners could tell the difference between a hyper dog and one that simply had been cooped up too long and needed some time to play. We've now been a very happy pack for five years - and I recommend this book to all my human friends!

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for anyone who wants a canine companion!
Anyone who thinks that they want to bring a dog into their home should read this book first.I volunteer for Labrador Retriever Rescue, and constantly am amazed at how many people assume responsibility for a dog without knowing what they're getting into. This book is clearly written and offers excellent advice on all aspects of choosing and raising a dog from a shelter. The advice applies to other "used" dogs as well, whether they're from rescue organizations or your neighbor. Not only can it help you decide if you SHOULD be sharing a home with a dog, it will help you find the right dog and it will save a life.Giving a dog a second chance by adopting from a shelter or a rescue organization is very rewarding.I know--one of my dogs was a stray, one was from a shelter via a neighbor (who shouldn't have had a dog), and two are from Lab Rescue. All have been fabulous creatures!

5-0 out of 5 stars Encouraging-Get this Book!
This would be a great book to give to adopters at shelters. All of the behavior-dealing techniques I've tried have worked very well. It's an honest, yet mostly upbeat look at gaining a new family member! Time andpatience are the keys in having a successful shelter adoption.

5-0 out of 5 stars very easy to read and informative

I never thought I would be sitting in a room full of cats giving Reiki at our local animal shelter, but I have done just that.I never thought that I would be giving Reiki to a terrified bunny and I have done that, too.A dog that had been at the shelter for 10 months and hadn't been adopted because all she could do was pace and bark from stress, became calm enough to be adopted.I was fortunate enough to have had SARA open the door for me and our local shelter but there are still many doors that are closed. This book has the information to help you begin and to actually practice Reiki in a shelter environment. It also tell you what you need to know in dealing with questions from the staff and visitors.Who knows?Maybe you will want to become a SARA supporter.I am! ... Product Description
In celebration of an enduring American craft icon, Sock Monkey Dreams dares to ask the question "What are sock monkeys up to when humans aren’t looking?" With voices alternately funny, sweet, clever, crabby, and more than a little tongue in cheek, the residents of the Red Heel Monkey Shelter, a refuge for abandoned sock monkeys, reveal a world that looks surprisingly like our own.

Sock newsmonkey Benny Hathaway and socktographer Link faithfully record the life and times of their fellow Red Heel residents. Each character, whether a celebrity, artist, doctor, or handymonkey, comes alive through interviews, stories, and full-color photos. Full-page dioramas provide the most detailed and fascinating window into the secret life of sock monkeys that perhaps has ever been published. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars lord love a duck...
Whitney Shroyer and Letitia Walker, Sock Monkey Dreams: Daily Life at the Red Heel Monkey Shelter (Viking, 2006)

All the sudden there's a sock monkey revolution out there. I'm not entirely sure why, but the odd-looking, slightly ominous little dolls are all the rage again. Viking are the latest company to capitalize on the trend with Shroyer and Walker's Sock Monkey Dreams, an odd little photography book that purports to be about the lives of some sentient sock monkeys.

Okay, once the trauma of that image is out of your head, away we'll go with the review.

The basic idea behind the book was this: construct a scene, add some sock moneys, take a picture, write some text to go with the picture. Not out of the ordinary for a book of photography. This is a lot more than just captions, though. Shroyer and Walker have created an entire sock monkey civilization, replete with politics, a pecking order, the bad side of the tracks, you name it. The stories intertwine to give a complete (as far as we know) picture of life at the Red Heel Monkey Shelter. It's exceptionally clever, and well carried-out. The pictures are taken with an eye to composition, though that shouldn't be surprising given their artificial nature.

It's quite the flight of fancy, and if sock monkeys don't terrify you, you'll probably love it. *** ½

5-0 out of 5 stars Humorous
This is a great book if you like to laugh. What a hoot!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sock Monkey Dreams Is Unique, Smart, Satisfying
The premise is deceptively simple: sock monkeys aren't just sitting idly on shelves waiting for human beings to notice and interact with them. They are in fact leading rich, sometimes complex inner lives.

Reading SOCK MONKEY DREAMS is much like peering through window after window of a doll's house (in this case, a turreted red Victorian two-story dubbed the Red Heel Monkey Shelter) to witness the scenes inside actually in motion, the characters fully fleshed and engaged in matters of interest and concern to them, whether we are observing them or not.

The reader is prepared for this shift in perspective by the opening chapters, in which, respectively, sock monkeys Folio and Benny Hathaway provide the history of the origin and development of their simian kind (including a fascinating series of photos illustrating the physical evolution of the species), and explain the impetus behind Benny's decision to gather stories of the Shelter's citizens.

Benny clarifies early: "Before we go any further, I think that we should get one thing straight. The way the monkeys at the Red Heel Monkey Shelter look at life is not necessarily the way all sock monkeys look at the world around them... Not all sock monkeys are self-centered, crazy, infused with magical powers, or convinced they are royalty or ex-movie stars. Not all monkeys have their own TV shows, join rock bands, or run little secondhand shops. As far as I know. But some of the monkeys here do these things." (SMD, p. 16)

The majority of the book provides glimpses into the lives of these monkeys, through snippets of interviews and articles from The Monkey Ape Vine, as well as sidebars that explain Cool Girls slang or the rules of games like Slug Bug and Slickety Wicket.

But the clever, often funny and sometimes poignant writing is only half of the delight of SOCK MONKEY DREAMS. Numerous gorgeous, full-page photographs of sock monkeys in action, using satisfyingly detailed sets, provide the reader with a visual feast. They also provoke not a few 'how did they DO that?'s. The Minibabies garden, GAGA OSME circus scene, and Zippy's surreal birthday party are particular favorites.

The vignette style of SOCK MONKEY DREAMS makes it possible to read the book beginning at any point (dreams, after all, being non-linear). It succeeds in operating on multiple story-telling levels to appeal to a range of ages and temperaments. It is both simple and sophisticated, clever and straightforward. It is by turns sweet and sardonic, laugh provoking and insightful. The characters into whose lives we glimpse are shown clearly to be as prone to foibles and follies, to hold hopes (or delusions) as strongly, to love and disdain and provoke and ignore each other as completely as any human beings.

SOCK MONKEY DREAMS is the sort of book that will stimulate all but the dullest or most jaded imaginations, and I recommend it most highly. ... Read more

Product Description
Photographer Traer Scott’s endearing portraits of dogs living in American shelters are irresistible and heart-rending – and make a passionate appeal to dog lovers everywhere. Some of the dogs subsequently found good homes; others were never adopted. The portraits reveal the strikingly intense emotion, dignity and, sometimes, humour and whimsy that Scott saw in each face despite the dog’s circumstances. By documenting the undeniable expressions of emotion in the dogs encountered in her volunteer work, Scott raises awareness of animal rescue causes, and especially the need for more adoptive homes for abandoned dogs. This book of true portraits of fifty beautiful shelter dogs is a poignant and loving tribute to all dogs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The unqualified love of the rescue dog
As the owner of 3 rescue dogs, I found this book to be a pictoral presentation of the unqualified love that rescue dogs bring into your life.I tell people that DOG is GOD spelled backwards. In a world that is often cruel, uncaring and thankless to own a rescue dog brings me back to the unqualified love of a dog who will eat the same food every day, and is excited to see me when I return and will keep my secrets. There are a few sad tales in the book, but to see what a dog is really all about, I recommend this book without reservation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sad stories, heart breaking, but too much advocacy of pitbull ownership
Yes, I am a diehard animal lover. And yes, I am sure pitbulls can be bred and raised and loved and nutured to be great, humane, well behaved, BALANCED DOGS.However, in our society these days, it just isn't happening most of the time and unfortunately too many people just don't care for their pets as parts of the family but as more as a symbol of their material possessions. They breath, eat, love, feel, cry just like us.And pitbulls can become aggressive at the blink of an eye even being nurtured.Even when they are balanced. Too many sad, sad stories. And I hate it for the dogs more than I hate it for the humans they hurt.Because it is the human's fault that they are they way they are.

But........the book is great and the stories are profound and gut wrenching and uplifting all at the same time.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love rescue dogs
I work in a veterinary hospital, so naturally i love animals.. but I've got a weak spot for mutts, strays, shelter dogs and rescues. I purchased this book for our lobby, and then had to purchase another one for myself. The photographs are beautiful, the photographer captures them with dignity. My intention in placing this book in our lobby was to encourage people to rescue/adopt their next dog as opposed to buying, so clients could see the beauty in abandoned dogs. The book has definitely become a staff favorite, and I am so glad I purchased it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cats of Kittyville
Loved this book!Talks about rescuedcats that are sent to a rescue group in Utah. They do GREAT work there and should write a lot more books. It contains many heartwarming pictures, tells histories of their animals and concludes each story with the happy outcomes! It's a good one for cat lovers!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read book for anyone who cares about cats
Beat Friends Sanctuary is known, through the National Geographic TV show "Dogtown", for their rescue and care of dogs considered by most shelters to be "hopeless." Among other dogs, they took in many of Michael Vick's fighting dogs and rehabilitated them to become loving pets.

So I was very happy to see this book about Best Friend's rescues and care of cats. "Kittyville" is a section of the sanctuary devoted to our feline friends. Maybe some day, there will be "Kittyville" TV shows.

Especially striking was the description of "The Great Kitty Rescue," where 600 cats were rescued from a hoarder (who supposedly was working for a cat rescue organization). One of my own adopted cats was rescued by a local animal control agency from a hoarder. Animal hoarders seem to believe that they are "taking care of" and "loving" their animals -- even though they force their animals to live in torture chambers where they are crowded into cages, wracked with diseases and rarely if even given any sort of human love. Most cats rescued from hoarders have to be euthanized because of poor health and lack of socialization. My own cat was one of the fortunate ones; though he suffered from a terrible case of fleas, he was reasonably healthy. Though he was terribly frightened, he had now blossomed into a wonderful, loving kitty.

The cats rescued in The Great Kitty Rescue were scared, neglected, diseased; many were unsocialized. The devoted staff at Best Friends took over their care and rehabilitated most of them. There are individual accounts of rescued cats who may very well have been put to sleep as "hopeless" in most shelters. However, the Best Friends people never gave up on them.

This book is coffee-table size, with many photographs as well as descriptions. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching and Beautiful

I came across the worderful gem of a book at the library recently. It was just wonderful.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in southern Utah is home to some two thousand abused and abandoned animals: cats, dogs, birds, horses rabbits and more. The take animals from other shelters and rescue groups, and even have a rapid response team in place that conducts rescues after natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina.

Featured in this beautifully illustrated book are spotlight cats on nearly everypage, and a story about them as well. Cat lovers will melt when they see these beautiful furballs, and many who read this book will surely shed a tear or two in the process.

The caring never stops at Kittyville, where even cats with special needs are give a new opportunity at life. Even the unadoptable: the sick, the older or those cats that have suffered trauma will enjoy a good life, for the rest of their life at this wonderful sanctuary.

If you love cats, and love reading about happy endings for all of God's creatures, then check out this book. I really loved it, and hope you will too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lynn Maycroft
I ordered this book because I was familiar with it from work.In the Adoptions department at our local SPCA we have a small library for the adoptions counselors and kennel workers. When I read the excellent section of the book on Housebreaking, I decided I HAD to have a copy of my own as I knew the other sections would be just as good.

The section on Housebreaking spells out step-by-step how to lovingly train your new dog or puppy.Crate training is also explained, as well as Submission Training, Introductions to your other household pets, and a easily understandable introduction to Dog Health and Parasites.

This book is an absolute treasure specifically written for the new or potential dog owner.I truly love this book and have added it to my own library along with the author's other book, Compatible Canines: Keeping the Peace Among Your Pets - both of which seem to be out-of-print.

2-0 out of 5 stars THERE ARE BETTER BOOKS OUT THERE
I thought that I would be getting a book targeted to the specific problems that shelter dogs experience. Perhaps training advice on how to deal with issues that these special dogs may exhibit. Boy - was I wrong! Having recently saved a 4 month old puppy from a shelter I was really looking forward to learning how to make my puppy's adjustment smooth. I learned nothing from this book. Some ridiculous chapters include "Sex - Who Needs It" and "Will It Bite?" both addressing issues that really don't need an entire chapter. Of course your dog should be neutered and of course you should do your best to choose a happy playmate - not an agressive fiend. I am not a new dog owner but these chapters would make me never want a dog. I have had a much better experience with other books written on the subject. I would not recommend this for anyone looking for insight and training tips for shelter dogs who may have been abused, abandoned, be extremely submissive or agressive.

Product Description

“In a volume as compassionate as it is unsettling, Carey Salerno questions the moral authority assumed in the narrow confines of the animal shelter. Abu Ghraib haunts these lines as the shelter takes on harrowing, allusive dimensions, and as the narrator weighs her burden of complicity. Shelter is filled with fierce and desperate yowling, much of it our own.”—Michael Waters

Disturbing because of the cruelty intended as kindness to animals and the speaker’s unflinching, relentless insistence on her culpability, these poems force us to consider whether we can be redeemed by our capacity for love, compassion, and personal responsibility.

From “Certification”:

. . . shave a bit of tabby fur, pump the forearm
a little harder this time, careful with the needle,

not too deep. Even the drugged cat’s ears
press the skull. She cannot miss its vein, focusing

solely on the twenty-five cents raise. Wasn’t that enough
to lean over and stab the heart, humor the vet’s

sensitivity? Compassion: the slabbed certificate
on the wall reads so. In the name

of all holies she, he, anyone willing
to work for minimum wage may kill.

Carey Salerno earned her MFA in poetry from New England College. Her poems have been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and have appeared in such journals as Rattle and Natural Bridge. She currently works in publishing and lives with her husband in Boston.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Harrowing Poetic Experience
This is a brutal collection of poems based in an animal shelter.Salerno offers no dewey-eyed kittens or romping puppies. This is the dark side of life in a large shelter, and Salerno spares no image in depicting the harsh reality of life for these animals. She also depicts the lonely, somewhat desperate lives of the shelter workers, and how petty office politics can invade almost any environment. These poems are grim, sparse, depressing, and occasionally beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Contemporary Poetry - Voice and style.
For all who are interested in following the course of contemporary poetry, buy this book.It has the delicate blend of Voice and Style that opens up space as it engages to speak in critical dialogue. An author to follow for the next several decades, Carey Salerno writes in full voice....
Buying this book has the extra satisfaction (though none is needed) of supporting the Alice James Press, which has been the launching pad for so many great writers: including the much beloved late Jane Kenyon.I am looking forward to my third and fourth reads.Congratulations Carey Salerno! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The Star Thrower
I don't want to detract from the inspiration this book obviously provides but was sad to see that she has adapted Loren Eiseley's Starfish story as her own - and appears to have given no credit. Eiseley's original can be found in his book, The Star Thrower.

5-0 out of 5 stars Speaking for those who cannot . . . . says it all!
There are no words to fully describe the depth of this book's scope in such relevant context of shelter work! The writing is excellent, the overall aura and ambience provides insight, inspiration and aspiration toward the goals encompassed in these stories!Every individual encounter in this volume will capture your emotions with hope and a desire to be a part of similar endeavors!

5-0 out of 5 stars Touched my heart
This was a wonderful book, especially for shelter workers or volunteers who see and experience some of the same things as in the stories. Many of the stories dealt with the euthanasia side of shelter work but end with ahopeful note. The book stresses the importance of spaying and neutering andnot treating companion animals as throw away objects but as importantmembers of the family. I recommend this book highly for animal lovers andam even considering buying a second copy and donating it to my local humanesociety's new library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bardi's the Best!
The author was a "founding mother" of rescue in her own breed, Welsh Terriers, many years ago -- long before "rescue" was a fashionable idea. This lively, well-informed book will help first(or tenth!)- time rescuers get an idea what to expect from a rescue dog, whether it is a purebred or a mutt. ... Read more
