4-0 out of 5 stars So Far So Good
I was looking at different dog training books in the bookstore and came across this one. I didn't want to waste money on a book that didn't work so I tried one command (sit) before purchasing the book...I have a 6 month old Miniature Pinscher which is my first dog. He's highly energetic! I hadn't been able to get him to sit still to teach him anything. I was just happy he was doing well with the crate training. I read in the book how to teach him how to sit and actually went home and he learned in 5 minutes! My daughter couldn't believe it. I'm going back today to buy this book to help with stay and leave it and all the other necessary commands. I know its hard to judge from one experience but if you knew my puppy you'd be a believer too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good dog training book!
Excellent book. After an experience with a REALLY BAD video, this was a relief.Very useful and humane!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Puppies
I do not have much experience with dogs, so I decided to read this book. It gave a great description of why the book is useful to you, the dog owner, what supplies you'll need (leashes etc), and step by step instructions for training each behavior. It is geared for puppies, but you can use it with any age dog. My degree is in animal training and I still learned from this book. ... Read more

Product Description
It all starts with good horse sense. Anyone who understands how horses think, knows the basics of good horsemanship, and is aware of general safety practices when working around horses already has a leg up on what is necessary to train a horse. STOREY'S GUIDE TO TRAINING HORSES is a comprehensive volume that builds on that foundation and takes the trainer step-by-step through the training process, from handling the foal to ground work to mounted lessons and trailer training. While most training books focus on riding, this guide takes a broad view, presenting different methods and alternatives so you can tailor your approach to your particular horse. Author, rancher, and horse trainer Heather Smith Thomas explains how to avoid common mistakes and how to ensure mutual respect and a productive working relationship with your horse. She begins with training psychology - including how to think like a horse and the origins of the "flight or fight" response. Then she covers handling and positive, progressive training techniques for each stage of the horse's development. And since each horse is different, Thomas offers a variety of training methods designed to suit different temperaments. Furthermore, she emphasizes that a smart trainer puts the horse first, letting the horse learn at its own pace rather than trying to force the animal to an unrealistic training timetable.

Complete with a glossary of equine terms and a list of resources for additional information on horse training - including training clinics - this is an authoritative reference for trainers of all levels. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stotey's Guide to Training Horses
Very easy to understand. Lots of pictures. Tells you Why you do it this way. Good book for beginer or experienced horseman.

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful!
My husband checked out this book from the library because he got interested in working with my horses. I thought maybe I could learn something from it, too, so I started reading it. I was not impressed. All the book had was hypothetical situations, but nothing on how to correct behavior if your horse wasn't already perfect. For example: I have a yearling who I will be breaking to ride in two years. I was interested in how they went about with the initial mounting, etc. They suggested that you have someone hold your horse, then you lean on your horse, then you get up and viola! You are ready to start. I envision my horse maybe taking a step forward. Or maybe stepping to the side. Or backing up. Or perhaps even throwing in a buck. Do they cover this? Not at all, because obviously if you're training your horse right your horse would never even think of taking a step to the right, or stepping forward, or throwing in a buck the first time you mount him. The horse would stand perfectly still the first time ever that you mounted, so these issues don't need to be addressed. Nor do they cover how you should go about it if you don't have someone to help hold your horse. The entire book is like this-essentially, it is an idealized version of how to train, taking into account that your horse does exactly what he is supposed to the first time around and is never confused by you adding something new. And if your horse IS confused the first time you try something new, then obviously you did a very poor job training him. I do not recommend it at all for anyone who is actually serious about horse training.

4-0 out of 5 stars From soup to chestnuts.
Comprehensive and informative. The central theme is act early and act patiently. Lightness of pressure and knowing when to stop a lesson turns your horse into a dependable collaborator instead of a skittish adversary, Heather Smith Thomas writes.
"The essence of training is to use less and less pressure as the horse learns to respond, until he will perform the correct response at just the slightest touch."
Track trainers and others concerned about the seemingly increasing fragility of racehorses get food for thought from Thomas's tips.
Some examples,
1) GELD A MALE WHEN HE IS A FOAL...Perhaps doing this later, something done with some frequency in the racing world, lessens racing prowess.
2) HORSES HAVE SENSITIVE EARS...Then why are some racetracks located near airports and busy roadways? Isn't this likely to impair performance? Are gambling interests being put before horse health?
3) HORSES SHOULDN'T BE RIDDEN UNTIL THEY'RE 3 YEARS OLD..."The bones and joints of a two-year-old are not mature enough to handle athletic work with the weight of a rider." Although watching juvenile thoroughbreds compete is thrilling it's likely to be causing shorter careers. The handling of 2007 Preakness winner Curlin (who didn't race as a 2-year-old) might represent a new/old paradigm for restoring soundness to the racehorse. Perhaps this also points to why so many Kentucky Derby winners are "homebred."
Harness racing newcomers get a thorough explanation of the difference between trotting and pacing. Pacing, although far more prevalent in U.S. standardbred competition, is a less natural movement for the horse (in which the lateral legs move together) and is accompanied by less support, balance and traction on wet footing. Could this state of affairs also be shortening racing careers?
Desire for breeding dollars and slow-growing purses have certainly done their part to curtail track careers. Year-round racing is also highly cupable. And, more generally, as Thomas reminds us, being a racer is not a natural condition. Racing techniques must be taught, often done in a constrained and artificial atmosphere.
"Most horses never do a racing trot," she writes, "and many don't know how to extend their trot while ridden."

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic to more advanced subjects..
Great book for all levels and all abilities of riders. It DOES talk about a lot of basic things..such as SAFETY, tacking up, leading, handling, etc. However, it also addresses other things such as longeing, ground driving, trailer training, lightness and collection, lateral work, retraining the spoiled horse, and many other things without causing fear or distrust.
Great book- recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars Storey's Guide very complete

4-0 out of 5 stars Have Fun Clicker Training Your Bird
Clicker training all sorts of different animals has become very popular over the last few years. There are several books out on clicker training dogs, but The Click That Does The Trick by Robin Deutsch give instructions and ideas for clicker training birds.

Robin starts off with the basics - understanding your bird, how birds may interpret the training process and how to use the clicker in training.

Robin indicates that the first step is to condition your bird to the clicker. After that you can start training simple tricks. Robin gives several suggestions for tricks and for each one she indicates how easy or complicated it is as well as the size of bird that it will work best for.

When first introducing a new trick, Robin tells us that each small step must be rewarded. She stresses that it is very important that every training session ends on a happy note.

Some of the tricks require props, so Robin then gives instructions on how to make these props.

Time and patience are a requirement whenever you set out to train your bird. If you have the time and patience and want to spend some quality time with your bird, you will find great ideas to help you in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walks the reader through a step-by-step process with explicit instructions and full-color photographs
The Click That Does The Trick is an easy-to-use guide especially for exotic bird owners looking to train their pets to perform a wide variety of tricks, using a clicker as a training tool. From simple tricks such as extending or flapping wings, to more advanced or prop-related tricks such as playing dead in the owner's hands or ringing a bell, to advanced tricks like riding a scooter or using props to perform imitations of popular sports, The Click That Does The Trick walks the reader through a step-by-step process with explicit instructions and full-color photographs. The Click That Does The Trick emphasizes that exotic birds, from parrots are not fully domesticated animals like modern cats and dogs, and cannot be handled in precisely the same way due to their very strong natural instincts. Training must never force or frighten the bird, should be kept fun, and not all birds are suited to perform all tricks. A final section aids the reader in creating bird-sized props for the more elaborate prop-based tricks. Highly recommended for any bird owner interested in becoming better acquainted with his or her pet through training, and possibly even giving small performances to delight friends and family.

Product Description
Training a horse brings an array of vexing challenges. What should a rider do with a horse who just won't listen? What about the horse who quickly tires, or becomes cranky during training? And there are horses who behave well in the presence of an instructor, but — maddeningly — never while alone with the rider. Situations like these can leave even the most enthusiastic equestrian feeling discouraged, frustrated, and even downright helpless.

Jessica Jahiel comes to the rescue with The Horse Training Problem Solver, the third title in her popular Problem Solver series. In her informal yet informative style, Jahiel offers sensible answers to riders' most common training challenges. In a handy, accessible Q&A format, Jahiel uses real-life case studies to bring troublesome situations to life and then solves the problems with tested, proven solutions.

The book's combination of basic training theory, effective solutions, and handy tips and strategies will help riders get the most out of every training session. Best of all, Jahiel breaks down training goals — from simple commands like "whoa" and "go" to complex transitions and ring figures — into simple building blocks, logical to both horse and human. Riders will begin to gain their animal's trust, develop realistic expectations, stay focused, and engage in effective two-way communication, ultimately resulting in a happier, better-trained, more enjoyable horse.

For the millions of Americans who show, train, or own horses — including the steady, growing market of first-time horse owners — The Horse Training Problem Solver is an indispensable reference. It will demystify horse training, improve the horse-rider relationship, and ensure a more satisfying experience for both horse and rider. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for your average horseperson!
This book, like the others in the series is great for everyday reference. It provides info and answers for alot of situations horse owners will find themselves in.It is a wonderful book to have on hand!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great advice every horse owner needs!
I read this book cover to cover, it is so practical and straightforward and every example is one that I could relate to. I was most impressed with the fact that each problem was solved using the best technique that fit the horse and the situation. So many books today use only one training method or school of thought, what is special about this author is that she recognizes that all training techniques have merit and she uses the ones that best fit the situation and gives alternate methods as well.
Great reference book to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any horse library
The excellent review this book garnered from George Morris made me buy it, and once I finished it I knew that George was right: horsewoman at every skill level can learn from Jahiel. Her diplomatic and sensible advice to the people who asked questions about challenges they have with their horses are straightforward and filled with her philosophy: Do what's best for the horse. From answers to riders who feel that their horses are "trying to pull a fast one" on them--she says horses don't do that--or riders who see horses struggling with a problem--she asks if the horse is in pain, or confused?--she comes right to the solution. If you see a horse at the stable grinning from jowl to jowl you're probably looking at a horse whose owner just got one of Jahiel's books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth is self evident...
I loved the book, but I also think it is important to read the articles available (for free) written by Dr. Mclean that are published in various places (google search; his website, the h[...], etc.).The ideas and methods outlined by Dr. Mclean have proved EXTREMELY effective in retraining my mare.Desperation drove me to read Dr. Mcleans work, as my horse was rearing and bolting, and I was ready to sell her. Today (8 months later), by following the principles of training, and using techniques such as overshadowing, etc., I have a completely different horse: calm, happy, and a total joy to work with. I simply couldn't have done it without the knowledge of how horses truly learn.

4-0 out of 5 stars well researched, not for everyone
I can't say I agree (or necessarily disagree) with everything in this book, but it gave me a lot to think about.McLean certainly knows his horses. This is not a book for those who like to anthropomorphize or romanticize horses. It's very realistic pictures of horses as horses.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disapointing
Nothing new here. I was disappointed to say the least after shelling out my bucks for this book I just expected more. Certainly nothing to write home about.

Try this book instead: Equine Behaviour: Principles and Practice

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine book that lays out an overview of McLeans training
For those of us familiar with behavioural training this book has been a long time in coming. So many times you are stuck between the traditional 'leg on, leg on, leg on' (where's the release??) training school or NH which has it's own achilles heal - continually activating the natural flight response and for most practitioners a total lack of understand of what positive reinforcement is.

For those looking for a more extensive explaination of the actual training methods he has written a second book "Horse Training The McLean Way
" however this one is meant to provide an introduction into behavioural training and then an overview of the types of exercises and horse 'problems' that they deal with. The book is well written and should be easily accessible to anyone interested even if they are not science-minded or well versed in behavioural psychology.

For all the dressage riders with horses that buck instead at tempi-changes or rear instead of piaffe - reading this could make you understand that these are your problems not the horse! and save your dressage mount (and your competition career)

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has no equal
I have been a rider/trainer and instructor for the past 30 years.I have ridden with and trained with some of the top trainers in the world.I have read hundreds of books on the training of horses and been to dozens upon dozens of clinics with all of the "horse whisperers".After reading Andrew McLean's incredible book, I immediately went out and bought 10 copies to give to friends and trainers.I will agree with one of the reviewers that the book might be better appreciated by someone with a background in psychology and that Andrew does presume a certain knowledge level from the reader.Apart from that it is one of the most amazing books on training that I have ever come across.I began using many of Andrew's principles on our new green pony as soon as I finished the book and was simply floored by the simplicity and efficacy of the methods.I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars gaited horses
this is a great book you can buy a video also that goes along with the book . I have both . The info that these two have are great for the person that wants to work with their own horse . Or fix a horse that has a gait problem . I got all my questions answered and them some with this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, sound training and riding principles
This is no coffee table book; it's a work horse. It is an excellent, thorough, hands on manual for developing a sensible, enjoyable, gaited horse--for ring or trail.Humor, personal experiences, and detailed analysis make for easy reading, but you should plan on reading, and re-reading the book several times to get all the information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for any level trainer
I thought this was one of the better books I've ever read about training the flat shod gaited horse. It was easy to follow and understand. My only drawback was I wish the print was a little larger, otherwise it was a very good book and one I've already been referring to myself in re-training an old horse, as well as my younger horse who is back in training after several months off. Many of these steps mentioned were skipped in his training, luckily he is still very young and had matured slow so it will not be too hard to go back and pickup many of the things he needed which were skipped.

5-0 out of 5 stars A much needed guide for developing natural gait
Gary Lane has brought us a much needed manual for common sense solutions to gaited horses. He utilizes classical and natural training methods for reaching the mind of the horse as well as conditioning the body.Gary has a deep appreciation for natural gait and has given us a guide based his many years of training and rescue experience to aid us in helping our horses develop their natural talent and brilliance; something this industry has lacked for a very long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Horse Lover
This book gives good incite to the person who is trying to partner with their horse.Trying to find your way when everyone has an opinion is hard. This approach is a balanced approach, good for you and the horse.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great 'undersaddle' training hints.
I did thoroughly enjoy this book.I have done and read a significant amount of natural training methods so some of the ground work stuff was fairly elementary and sometimes not as 'natural' as I would like - found it to be a little incongruent with the 'positive' and 'saying yes' part of the title.

None-the-less the under saddle trainingsuggestions - especially teaching the half halt and circle work - were invaluable and made this book a worthwhile purchase.Like any book I its important to take away what is useful to you and not be too critical of the remainder which may work very well for others.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Top Two Books To Own
What a great book! With so many books available on natural horsemanship, horse behavior and training it's easy to accummulate a whole equestrian library rather quickly. There are really only two books you can't go without though:
Gincy Bucklin's What Your Horse Wants You to Know and Sarah Blanchard's The Power of Positive Horse Training.
Not only are both books full of great suggestions but more importantly they help bridge the language barrier between horse and human. Wonderful books to own, easy and interesting to read and great reference tools and morale builders when you and your equine partner hit a road block. ... Read more

Product Description
IMPRINT TRAINING OF THE NEWBORN FOAL offers an easy-to-follow, step-by-step approach to handling and training newborn foals, as well as numerous techniques and exercises that aid the foal in halter training and later in performing riding maneuvers. Imprinting can be defined as a learning process occurring soon after birth in which a behavior pattern is established. The newborn foal is imprinted to follow and bond with whatever large object looms above it at the time of birth. Dr. Miller's methods lay the foundation for teaching a horse most of what it will need to know to serve as a useful animal for the rest of its life. Early training can, in an amazingly brief period of time, assure an ideal relationship between horse and human, with the horse bonded and submissive to the human. In addition, the horse will be desensitized to the everyday frightening stimuli that typically elicit a flight reaction in the young horse, and which account for the frequent injuries that afflict horses and the people who work with them. The book includes nineteen chapters beginning with initial imprinting training, then following with subsequent sessions, halter training, performance basics, response reinforcement, problem prevention, and sections on racehorses, mules, and brood mares.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent help
What a fabulous help this book is in beginning the training of young foals - highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Robert Millar's Imprint Training
This is a very good instructional book and a must read for anyone expecting a foal anytime soon. There are plenty of pictures showing how to do what he suggests and he goes over many of the principles of good horse training methods and practices that relate to a new foal. He goes on in later chapters to state how horses learn, about sensitizing them and desensitizing them, and using higher techniques to refine what you've taught once they get a little older. He has plenty to say on teaching the baby and has several good techniques. Of course, it has a chapter or two dealing with imprinting. You can't get tell too much on imprinting, because there just isn't that much to tell. Imprinting is basically being there within the first hour of the horse's birth and doing all of the things you would do with an adult horse; such as sticking your fingers down in his ears and mouth, running your hands all over, manipulating the feet, running the back of a blade less set of clippers all over it anywhere you may clip in the future, and anything else you can think of. These things, when done within an hour or two of birth are retained and make the foal less likely to be scared of them in the future. It also makes them see you in the same light they see their mother and while they aren't going to cling to you as much, they will be much more trusting and easy to handle and more accepting of new things in the future. I have seen horses raised not using this method and I've got a 3.5 month old colt that I used this on and I can tell that mine is much easier to train and handle and I believe that imprinting is a good part of that as well as both his parents being pretty smart and easy to train. He is very accepting of things similar to what I did when he was born and only slightly less accepting of other new things. He goes on to fill the rest of the book with how to continue and reinforce the imprinting and how to start your foal's training the right way. He teaches simple methods to prepare your horse for it's future. He teaches things, like how to get it to lead, give to pressure, and stand tied along with many other things. It's a must if you're having a foal anytime soon and a good read if you're just a horse person who like to know everything about them.

Super book.Loved it.Will use over & over again.Great ideas & thoughts in book.A must for any library.....

5-0 out of 5 stars Imprint Training 101
Expecting our first foal, I bought this book and read it cover to cover. What I came away with is a simple concept which is well-explained in this book. But as simple as the concept is - handle and introduce the new foal to as many life lessons as possible - this book also explains the reasoning and logic behind imprinting. I recommend it for anyone who is a beginner with a baby horse like I was. BTW, my filly is now one year old and nearly bomb proof. She's safe, affectionate and whinnies when she hears my voice.

2-0 out of 5 stars foal imprinting book
I felt there was too much 'imprinting/handling' too early.I did not use many of the suggestions, but just handled the foals carefully just like I would with any newborn. Both my foals are very personable and I don't know if that's because of their dams' temperament from the way I train them, the way I work with the foals and their mothers or because of how carefully I chose their dams AND sires.I certainly have not OVER-handled them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
I expected this book to be dull and excrutiatingly slow moving but instead I found that it was an amazingly complex book but not in the slightest way dreary. It gives plenty of information not only for the novice dog handlers and trainers, but also for the Championship.
