1-0 out of 5 stars poor delivery
I was very disappointed with the delivery of this book. I ordered the book from one site through Amazon, and they canceled my order a week later FOR NO REASON. I then ordered it from another site through Amazon and while it was within the stated delivery time, it was at the very end of the raneg of dates given. As if the person didn't care about their customer. I will be careful ordering through the sites other than Amazon from now on.

Product Description
Exposure Treatments for Anxiety Disorders is a unique volume, as it draws together the latest research on the rapidly-expanding field of anxiety disorders and illuminates how to correctly apply the proven methodology of behavioral therapy techniques to the variety of situations that face today's mental health professional. That said, cognitive therapy has in the last 10 years gotten increased attention as an alternative to behavior therapy in the treatment of anxiety disorders. But while it is gaining acceptance among practitioners, cognitive therapy has yet to illustrate substantial benefits above those that behavior therapy can already provide. In light of the aforementioned, coupled with the pressure many practitioners feel from managed care paradigms and shrinking healthcare coverage, this book will be a welcome resource allowing for increased clarity of action, accountability, and ultimately, positive client outcome. Each chapter is designed to address pivotal aspects in the assessment, formulation and diagnosis, and treatment of anxiety disorders, to a sufficient depth that the generalist practitioner will be comfortable using this book as a guide when working with the anxiety disordered client. ... Product Description
SERIES COPY:The Adolescent Mental Health Initiative series addresses some of the major mental health issues facing teenagers today--eating disorders, anxiety disorders, depression, and schizophrenia. Of thebooks planned for the series, the first four, including the two presented here, focus on how parents and other adults, including teachers, coaches, guidance counselors, and even pediatricians, can help afflicted teens overcome the disrupting and often devastating challenges of these disorders. Each book is an authoritative guide that offers essential information such as how to go about getting a diagnosis, what the latest treatment options and prevention strategies are, how to help teens cope with mental illness at home and at school and, perhaps most importantly, what the warning signs and red flags are that parents and other adults should look out for in teenagers who may be at risk for these diseases. Combining the expertise of leading psychiatrists and psychologists with the experience of everyday people who have faced these disorders in their own children, the books are designed to help adults deal effectively with adolescent mental illness and to empower them to act immediately and wisely in getting teens the best available treatment possible.
Growing up can be stressful for any teenager, but it is considerably harder for the many adolescents who develop an anxiety disorder. This book is an essential guide for parents, teachers, or other adults involved with teenagers who may be affected by these disorders. By bringing together two strands of expertise-that of mental health professionals and of parents who have lived through the experience of their own teenager's mental illness--If Your Adolescent Has an Anxiety Disorder provides adult readers with the clinical information and practical advice they need to understand and help the teen. There are chapters detailing four of the different types of anxiety disorders, including social anxiety, generalized anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, and post-traumatic stress disorders. Each includes a clearly written definition, a discussion of factors that can contribute to developing the disorder, treatment information, and case studies based on a real family's own experience with the disease.Tips and quotes from parents are sprinkled liberally throughout the text, and helpful sidebars provide more detailed information. The authors also provide a chapter fully dedicated to discussing treatment options, including what role parents play in treatment, how to juggle treatment and school, and how to handle insurance and managed care issues
Knowing the right information about anxiety disorders is the first step towards helping adolescents who are dealing with them grow to become healthy, happy adults ... Read more

Product Description
We've all felt occasional pangs of shyness and self-consciousness, but for the 15 million Americans with social anxiety disorder, the fear of being scrutinized and criticized can reach disabling proportions. Such was the case for Emily Ford, who shares her firsthand experiences in these pages. Emily's true story of fear, struggle, and ultimate triumph is sure to resonate with other socially anxious teenagers and young adults.
Emily's frank, often witty, sometimes poignant account of how she negotiated all the obstacles of social anxiety--and eventually overcame them with the help of therapy and hard work--makes for compelling reading. Yet this book is more than just a memoir. Emily's story is coupled with the latest medical and scientific information about the causes, diagnosis, treatment, and self-management of social anxiety disorder (or SAD). Readers will find a wealth of solid advice and genuine inspiration here. In engaging, accessible language--and with the help of psychiatrist Michael Liebowitz--she discusses what is known and not known about social anxiety disorder in adolescents. She outlines the various psychotherapies available for those with SAD and explains how to seek professional help, how to talk to family and friends about the illness, and how to handle difficult social situations. The result is both an absorbing story and a useful guide that will help to ease the isolation caused by SAD, encouraging young people to believe that, with commitment and hard work, they can overcome this illness.
Part of the Adolescent Mental Health Initiative series of books written specifically for teens and young adults, What You Must Think of Me will also be a valuable resource for friends and family of those with SAD. It offers much-needed hope to young people, helping them to overcome this illness and lead healthy, productive lives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Empathy and Advice
A few years ago I ended up dropping out of high school because I became so incredibly overwhelmed after a couple of years of medication and doctors appointments for what was thought to be just depression. Looking back, I remember how I couldn't eat breakfast because my anxiety unsettled my stomach too much. How I use to pretend I was sick rather often so I didn't have to face my teachers after not completing my homework and have my peers think I was stupid. I can still wonder around store too afraid to ask for help or dread making a phone call for hours before I actually do it. I didn't realize until much later my depression was caused by my anxiety.

In this book, I think many young adults are given the few things they absolutely need--understanding and answers. The author bravely shares her difficult journey offering empathy and comfort which can be difficult to find in school and even at home. The small personal exercises and guidance towards the road to better living are very helpful.

I would recommend this book to anyone who felt like they needed a better understanding of social anxiety (whether they are someone suffering from it or someone seeking to learn more,) its been helpful for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adjunct to therapy
As a psychotherapist I treat young clients with social anxiety. I always recommend they get this book for personal use and as a 'tool' for use in their therapy. Each client reports they have found it very helpful indeed and I recently had a parent tell me how much it helped her better understand what her child is going through. I recommend this book as a valuable tool for both professional counselors and for anyone wanting to overcome social anxiety.

5-0 out of 5 stars A rare glimpse into the tortured world of a young person struggling with social anxiety disorder

"As a child, Emily was incomparable, unusual, even precocious. At age four she was writing little poems and stories, enjoying music, art, and a myriad of creative pastimes. The breadth of her imagination along with her joie de vivre was a charming combination. Then in her teens, Emily became increasingly self-conscious.Immediate post-college days marked the beginning of her deep depression...During this time she frequently slept by day and was up all night...Emily withdrew socially; personal reactions became rare.Anxiety plagued her to the point of refusing to talk on the phone...Her eating habits became bizarre..."

The above is part of a letter written by the mother of the main author of this fascinating book, Emily Ford (with professor of clinical psychology, Dr. Michael Liebowitz and freelance health & psychology writer Linda Andrews).

This book in a nutshell has Ford sharing her personal struggle with the serious yet treatable disorder called social anxiety disorder (SAD), also called social phobia. She takes the reader along on her incredible and courageous journey of successfully coping with this disorder, while providing useful information, help, and hope to others also suffering from it (about 15 million Americans suffer from SAD), as well as to family members and friends who want to help.It is also an excellent book for those like me (one of my degrees is a psychology degree) who want to understand this disorder from the perspective of a person who has been challenged by it.

What is social anxiety disorder (SAD)?It is an anxiety disorder.Anxiety is a vague, unpleasant, emotional state with qualities of apprehension, dread, distress, and uneasiness. An anxiety disorder is a cover term for a variety of maladaptive syndromes which have severe anxiety as the dominant disturbance.SAD is "an anxiety disorder characterized by marked fear in social situations that involve being around unfamiliar people or the possibility of scrutiny by others."(Note that SAD is "substantially different" from shyness.)

Ford's chronicling of coping with SAD is in a word: superb. She tells her story with insight and warmth.

A major highlight of this book is that key points from the main narrative are isolated (in handwritten script), thus allowing the reader to have important information at his/her fingertips. To give the reader a "feel" for the book, I will give one example of these key points from each section (preface and chapters) of the book:

Preface: "The bravest thing I've ever done was to reach out and actively seek the assistance I desperately wanted and knew I needed."
(1) "I believed everyone around me was exchanging subtle signs and singles, conveying to one another that for any of a number of reasons, I was out of place."
(2) "Unless I knew I was going to be very good at something, I didn't do it at all."
(3) "Allowed to grow freely, untested by real-world experiences, my fears quickly mushroomed out of control."
(4) "Some new outfits and a change of scenery didn't magically transform me into the confident, outgoing person I wanted to be."
(5) "Medication may work faster than [therapy], but therapy may have more durable effects after treatment is stopped."
(6) "It takes great courage to force yourself to face your fears."
(7) "The confidence I gained by facing smaller challenges strengthened my belief that I could succeed."
(8) "Social anxiety disorder is just one of the many characteristics that make me the unique person I am."

After the main narrative is completed, there ishelpful material at the end of the book.First, there is a section called "Frequently Asked Questions."It is composed of 14 important questions regarding social anxiety disorder with complete answers given.Second, there is a glossary of terms that are defined for the reader. The definition of social anxiety disorder given above was taken from this glossary. Finally, there is a resource list provided not only for social anxiety disorder but for other disorders as well.

Finally, I only had one problem with this book.Although the author does a good job on informing the reader of the variety of medications (that is, prescribed drugs) available to aid therapy, I feel she does not convey the many problems associated with them. For example, there is a chart given that lists the prescribed drugs for social anxiety disorder. No where on this chart are the dangerous side effects given.

The fact is prescribed drugs are not candies. They have to be treated with caution. Thus, if prescribed drugs must be given, they ideally should be carefully monitored by the therapist prescribing them and given only for the short term (3 to 6 months).

In conclusion, this is a rare book written by a person trying to cope with social anxiety disorder.I leave you with the conclusion of the mother's letter that I began above:

"Remarkably, Emily has abandoned her dark despair and re-emerged into the radiance of self-delight and that of the world around her...Through...therapy and medication Emily has become a `new' person, ironically by becoming her `old' self.Once again, Emily has embraced the validity of her emotions, her uniqueness, and her interest in the lives of others."

5-0 out of 5 stars A very practical CBT book for treating anxiety disorders
I agree with the previous reviewers comments; this is a must have CBT book.I use this book a great deal in my psychiatric practice to treat patients suffering from anxiety disorders. It has patient manuals which you can copy and give to patients to use in the clinical setting. This is a very popular book in Australia amongst psychologists, psychiatrists and other mental health professionals. We have access to the full range of international CBT books but anecdotaly this is the most popular book in use. This book's only weakness is it lacks a chapter on PTSD.It has a good chapter on "first aid" after a traumatic event but not for treating PTSD as such.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for clinicians and students
This is a great Australian book on the cognitive-behavioural treatment of anxiety disorders. It is comprehensive in the topics it covers on each disorder, and practical to boot! The initial chapters are on general issues in dealing with anxiety disorders. Subsequent chapters cover panic disorder and agoraphobia, social phobia, specific phobias, OCD, and generalised anxiety disorder. For each of these disorders there is a chapter on the syndrome (what it is), treatment, a clinicians guide to treating the disorder, and a patient treatment manual. The patient manual is particularly useful and can be photocopied from the book to be used in clinical settings. Well worth a look. ... Read more

Product Description

Anxious Americans have increasingly pursued peace of mind through pills and prescriptions. In 2006, the National Institute of Mental Health estimated that 40 million adult Americans suffer from an anxiety disorder in any given year: more than double the number thought to have such a disorder in 2001. Anti-anxiety drugs are a billion-dollar business. Yet as recently as 1955, when the first tranquilizer—Miltown—went on the market, pharmaceutical executives worried that there wouldn’t be interest in anxiety-relief. At mid-century, talk therapy remained the treatment of choice.

But Miltown became a sensation—the first psychotropic blockbuster in United States history. By 1957, Americans had filled 36 million prescriptions. Patients seeking made-to-order tranquility emptied drugstores, forcing pharmacists to post signs reading “more Miltown tomorrow.” The drug’s financial success and cultural impact revolutionized perceptions of anxiety and its treatment, inspiring the development of other lifestyle drugs including Valium and Prozac.

In The Age of Anxiety, Andrea Tone draws on a broad array of original sources—manufacturers’ files, FDA reports, letters, government investigations, and interviews with inventors, physicians, patients, and activists—to provide the first comprehensive account of the rise of America’s tranquilizer culture. She transports readers from the bomb shelters of the Cold War to the scientific optimism of the Baby Boomers, to the “just say no” Puritanism of the late 1970s and 1980s.

A vibrant history of America’s long and turbulent affair with tranquilizers, The Age of Anxiety casts new light on what it has meant to seek synthetic solutions to everyday angst.

4-0 out of 5 stars Compelling and Enjoyable
A long time user of minor tranquilizers myself, and an advocate of infrequent, though never daily, benzodiazepine use (currently prescribed Valium, though previously experienced with Klonopin, Ativan, Xanax and Librium) I found this book of great personal interest. It is well researched and generally entertaining, if a bit dry at times. The history of minor tranquilizers is a fascinating one and the author of this book does it great justice.I was particularly interested in the details of the Miltown craze, a drug of once universal popularity now relegated almost entirely to the chambers of history.Whether your interest is casual or scholarly, by all means pick up this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Any health library needs this survey of American tranquilizer usage
History and psychiatry blend in THE AGE OF ANXIETY: A HISTORY OF AMERICA'S TURBULENT AFFAIR WITH TRANQUILIZERS. The last century has seen a huge increase in anti-anxiety medication: a trend Andrea Tone charts through manufacturers' files, FDA reports, government investigations, and interviews with patients, physicians and activists alike. Any health library needs this survey of American tranquilizer usage and its physical and social impact.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good historian tells how tranx came to calm our angst, sort of
An academic historian, Andrea Tone looks at the history behind anxiety and the tranquilizers used to calm it.Other books also look at how Americans use a lot of drugs like antidepressants and tranquilizers to improve their lives rather than fight a physical illness. But those authors typically push their own view on the subject.A good historian, Tone does not.

Indeed, it's hard to know what Tone herself thinks about tranquilizers. That's good.We readers can learn the history and make a judgment for ourselves.Tone starts with a look at hundreds of years of history of mental disorders, and how anxiety played its role in that history. Then she lays out the history of the first tranquilizer, Miltown, and how it fit in with the society that took it up with such enthusiasm.

Tone ends with the backlash against tranquilizers. As society continued to change, many found that the drugs could bite instead of comfort.Instant gratification came with a price, it seemed.A price many found too high to pay.

The Age of Anxiety is not a perfect book.It turns a bit tedious at times. Not a book that was hard to put down, it was instead occasionally hard to pick up again. That said, I did find myself drawn back into the story, wanting to know what happened next.

Many interesting glimpses into social history come out of the Age of Anxiety. Some I had known, but forgotten. For instance, how heavily the threat of nuclear war hung over the America of the 1950s and 1960s.That was a worry that even I had as a young child in that era.Tone points out that in 1959 two-thirds of American adults said in a poll that nuclear war was the issue that concerned them the most.

Other glimpses I did not know.Tone says that medical records show that President John F. Kennedy used tranquilizers, among several other drugs for pain and disease.Milton Berle used the first tranquilizer Miltown, joking that his name should be "Miltown" Berle, and promoted it heavily.

For me, the pleasure in the book was the history, told as stories of people's lives, especially scientists Frank Berger (inventor of Miltown) and Leo Sternbach (inventor of Librium and Valium). But also former First Lady Betty Ford's struggle with drug addiction, and that of Barbara Gordon (author of the troubling but entrancing book I'm Dancing As Fast As I Can). The stories make the book.

The Age of Anxiety delivers more than just reading pleasure. It traces the drugmaking industry from its early poverty to its current top rank in profitability among industries. That thread weaves together with science and social history to make a thought-provoking fabric.Tone does not single out any heroes or villains.Nor does she say whether these drugs are a dream or a nightmare.

But any reader will think about those questions as Tone unfolds her story. That makes The Age of Anxiety a valuable book as we as a society face the troubles every age brings. ... Read more

Product Description
With over 10% of all children meeting the criteria for an anxietydisorder, these disorders are among the most common psychiatricproblems experienced by schoolage kids, and can significantly interferewith their family and peer relationships and their performance atschool.Ranging from mild andtransient to severe andintractable, high levels of anxietyin children can lead to avoiding school, not participating in class, shying away from peergroups, worrying persistently, or evenexperiencing phobias and acute separation anxiety from parents.Despite the prevalence, effective, evidence-based therapeutic strategiesfor helping children overcomeanxiety have been lacking, leaving psychologists, schoolcounselors, and other child mental health professionals to rely onmore generalized CBTandindividual therapy approaches that don’t necessarily target the problems atissue. In Child AnxietyDisorders, Wood and McLeod present a clinically-proven treatment protocolbased on acollaborative,family-based intervention approach—one that has seen remission rates of80% in children. Incorporatingfamily therapystrategies and targeted CBT techniques, the authors lay out session-by-session guidelinesfor implementing the protocol, offering allthose who work with and counsel children a hands-on toolkit to effectively resolvechildhood anxiety, whethergeneralized or severein nature.Preliminary chapters cover anxiety typologies, screening and assessmenttechniques, family and geneticinfluences, the nature ofevidence-based practices, and other clinical considerations, such aspharmacotherapy. The secondpart of the book, the treatment manual, presents the 15-session protocol, includingoptional familytherapy modules to strengthen family interactions, and worksheets and handouts to be used in and out of thetherapy room. ... Product Description

Social phobia, or social anxiety disorder, is among the most common (and debilitating) of the anxiety disorders, and at any given time it effects somewhere between 3 and 5% of the US population, with similar statistics found in countries around the world. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been demonstrated to be the most effective form of treatment for social phobia, but research has shown that conventional CBT principles and general interventions fall short of the mark. With this in mind, Hofmann and Otto have composed an organized treatment approach that includes specifically designed interventions to strengthen the relevant CBT strategies. This volume builds upon empirical research to address the psychopathology and heterogeneity of social phobia, creating a series of specific interventions with numerous case examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most effective model of integrative treatment of anxiety
I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone treating or researching anxiety disorders. Wolfe provides an excellent method of addressing anxiety through the integration of cognitive, cognitive behavioral, and psychodynamic techniques. He offers the expertise of his extensive career in research, academia, and clinical treatment in an extraordinarily prosocial manner: it is clear that Dr. Wolfe has developed a method of treatment for anxiety and would like clinicians and patients alike to benefit from his discoveries. This book will help you develop a more comprehensive understanding of your patients and provide an outline for effective holistic treatment. I can tell you from personal experience that once you apply Wolfe's model in clinical practice, all previous conceptualizations will seem superficial, at best. It is a MUST-HAVE for students or clinicians dealing with, assessing, or treating anxiety disorders, however the application of Wolfe's model does require previous understanding of cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic theory. ... Product Description

For many years, cognitive-behavioral techniques have been at the forefront of treatment for anxiety disorders. More recently, strategies rooted in Eastern concepts of acceptance and mindfulness have have demonstrated some promise in treating anxiety, especially in tandem with CBT. Now, with Acceptance-Based Behavioral Therapies for Anxiety, thirty expert clinicians and researchers present a comprehensive guide to integrating these powerful complementary approaches—where they match, when they differ, and why they work so well together.

Chapter authors clearly place mindfulness and acceptance into the clinical lexicon, establishing links with established traditions, including emotion theory and experiential therapy. In addition, separate chapters discuss specific anxiety disorders, the current state of treatment for each, and practical ways of integrating acceptance and mindfulness approaches into therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific, foundational text
This impressive book is way more than a thoroughgoing review and analysis of a distinctly new approach to treating anxiety, which it accomplishes admirably well. It is a clear, foundational text on the "new wave" of empirically-validated psychological treatment-acceptance and mindfulness-based therapy. For mindfulness-oriented therapists of all stripes seeking the scientific foundation for what we do, this is it.

Susan Orsillo and Lizbeth Roemer have gathered together 30 scientist-practitioners (including themselves) under one cover, and had them tackle a variety of questions, such as, "What is the role of emotion in this new generation of empirically-validated treatment?" " What are the component parts of mindfulness?" "Are mindfulness and acceptance the same thing?" "How do the psychological processes of mindfulness and acceptance match up with the processes that create and sustain anxiety disorders?""Is acceptance a cause or effect of treatment effectiveness?" "What are the limitations of current treatment approaches for anxiety disorders, such as panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, or social anxiety, and how might the new approaches improve treatment?" "What exactly would a clinician do to treat anxiety, working from an ACT, DBT, or MBSR model?""How would we treat anxious kids within this paradigm?" There is even an interesting chapter on the basic science-what goes on in the psychology lab that shows, or doesn't show, how a mindful and accepting attitude toward uncomfortable experience affects outcome.

This penetrating, scholarly volume will make some clinicians happy and willing-even proud-to return to the scientific fold. Experiential and relational psychotherapists will not feel left out. I routinely recommend this book to therapists and students who are curious why mindfulness is currently one of the hottest topics in psychotherapy, and to clinicians interested in the latest psychosocial treatments for anxiety. ... Product Description
The second edition of the Textbook of Anxiety Disorders continues to offer both clinicians and researchers a single-volume resource that covers not only advances in clinical interventions but also the latest advances in theoretical knowledge. Following a comprehensive overview of anxiety disorders, the book provides detailed coverage of seven specific DSM-IV-TR diagnoses: generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), mixed anxiety-depression, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Each section covers the latest thinking on symptomatology and pathogenesis, then provides evidence-based clinical recommendations for pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy.

This new edition features new chapters on anxious traits and temperaments, the neuropsychology of anxiety disorders, and anxiety and insomnia. Other chapters have been entirely rewritten by new authors to provide fresh insight into such topics as integrated treatment of anxiety disorders; pharmacotherapy for GAD, OCD, and panic disorder; psychotherapy for OCD and PTSD; anxiety disorders in the elderly; anxiety accompanying substance abuse; and the economic and social costs of anxiety. All chapters have been expanded and fully updated with new research findings, and each now includes a concise summary of key clinical points to help readers put those findings into practice. ...
