4-0 out of 5 stars The Big Book of Appetizers
I make monthly treats for our dance group. This is quite a handy book for finding tasty, quick, easy to make small snacks. There is great variety to choose from.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
This book is boring. It has no pictures at all and seems to be more about full meals instead of just appetizers. I will probably never use this book - maybe I can re-gift it and look innocent.I should of paid attention to the reviews on this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Where Are The Photos?
A cookbook without photos is disappointing!Without visuals the reader has no idea how the finished product will look...thus a serious lack of stimulation..and interest.. sad because it might have some good recipes but I doubt that I will use the book very often.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Recipes - No Pictures
There are plenty of good recipes in a well organized format in this cookbook. The recipes are relatively simple and include "make ahead" suggestions to assist in party planning. I tried a couple of them recently for a big party and the ones I made were excellent. The major drawback for me is that there isn't a single photograph.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Appetizers!
I am an avid party giver and always appreciate a good cookbook for those miniature 'meals' I like to serve. This book whacks a punch and has some wonderful recipes that are both delicious and easy to prepare. Great addition to anyones collection. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid concept, not so sure on execution.
Marguerite Marceau Henderson, Small Plates: Appetizers As Meals (Gibbs Smith, 2006)

An intriguing idea for a cookbook, this; appetizer-style recipes quirked into meal form. I'm not sure it's entirely successful, concept-wise; too many of these seem more like scaled-down entrees than scaled-up appetizers, which makes me wonder how it differs from your basic cookbook. But the recipes themselves are solid, so I can't be all that hard on it. Pick it up from the library and give it a look before deciding you want it in your permanent collection. *** ½

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, unusual, but big plates
I was surprised at the large quantities proposed in these recipes, but many are delicious and worth repeating even if I do have to reduce the recipe. The book is divided into the customary sections with an intro that defines 'small plates' as 'unpretentious bites of robust and intense flavors, more substantial than a cocktail snack, not as hearty as an entree. They are ideal for diners who are curious about flavor, adventurous about taste and who want to vary their dining experience. . .'This was partly what I expected, but I also expected small quantities and these recipes are from 4-6 healthy servings up to 15, with sauce recipes making from 1-3 cups in most cases. But wait--I am not serving an army--I'm usually serving one or two.I can see the value of the larger quantities for people who intend to use them for entertaining, but otherwise excessive and more complicated than necessary (having to reduce the recipe).

My theory is that small quantities of really delicious food is as good for the waistline as it is for the palette and I hoped this book would help me with that.In the flavor department, I am delighted with many of these recipes. One salad, for example, was a combination I'd have never thought to try until I had it in a gourmet restaurant and was shocked by how incredible it was--watermelon, cantaloupe and cucumber with a light vinegar and oil type dressing.I couldn't get over it and was eager to repeat it at home, so when I found this combination as a recipe in the book (different dressing but close enough) I was enthusiastic about trying others.

So far I haven't been disappointed with any of the recipes. The 'Holiday Spiced Game Hens' includes cranberry or pomegranate juice, honey, coriander, cinnamon, allspice and garlic and produces a heavenly warmth that combines elements of international cuisine with more traditional flavors for something really special. I look forward to making the Grilled Salmon with Mushroom Pinot Noir Sauce and the Fireworks Vegetable and Seafood Salad (includes toasted sesame oil and soy sauce with crabmeat and scallops). I ended up turning down so many pages with recipes I want to try, I sort of defeated the purpose :).

The pictures are really beautiful and offer ideas for presentation.Happily for me, there are not many recipes that include red meat, which I'm allergic to, so I am getting more value from this book than many that are heavy on meat dishes.Even most of these could be made with poultry like the Beef Tenderloin Kebobs with Roquefort-Rosemary Sauce. The seafood recipes are to-die-for good like the Sesame-Coated Tuna with Wasabi Mayonnaise.

Although there are some more exotic ingredients used in these recipes, most can be found in a well-stocked kitchen or are readily available.

Bottom line: I am very pleased with the fare in this cookbook, but disappointed that I'll have to calculate recipes to get smaller quantities since I expected `small plates' to mean small quantities, hence my purchase. This is not meant as a speed cookbook, but I didn't find the prep daunting in any recipes I've made so far.I do wish there was storage info included should I want to make the larger quantity and freeze some for later use.I recommend this cookbook for those who want something a little unusual for themselves (and are willing to get out the calculator to adjust the recipes), but especially for those who regularly entertain a crowd of sophisticated diners.

1-0 out of 5 stars Kindle edition problems
Some pages look like they were produced on a poor copier and reduced in size (they are unreadable) where the very next page has large clear type.

The sample is so short as to be useless. Why anyone thinks a cookbook sample which contains only thankyous to people I don't know and not one example of how the recipes are actually presented is useful for making a determination to buy is beyond me. While I place high value on the reviewers comments, after the irritating sample provided for the Kindle I am prejudiced against the book.

What I'm suggesting is that presentation of the sample is quite important and thinking that just presenting the parts of the book that have no value in judging the subject being evaluated by the customer is shortsighted.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos and yummy Brie
I bought this after seeing Marguerite on a cooking segment and fell in love with the Nutty Caramel Baked Brie. I take it to showers and it is always the hit of the party. I have yet to try other recipe's but I have enjoyed looking at the beautiful photos of the 'plates'. Marguerite's way of describing appetizers as "intense and robust flavors" is brilliant!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book To Own
When a cookbook gives me at least one really great recipe, it is worth the money. This book provides page after page of scrumptious fare! It is for those with adventuresome tastebuds and willing to invest a little time preparing a tasty meal. Do not buy this book if you are looking for appetizer recipes in the typical sense. The recipes in this collection feature flavors from around the world. They run the gamut from bread based tasties to flavorful soups, unique salads, vegetables, pasta, meats and seafoods with a nice assortment of sauces and salsa. Each dish typically provides about 4 - 6 small servings. Make several for a little party, or prepare one just for yourself with leftovers. Enjoy! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I thought the book would have more in appetizer menus but...
It doesn't, it should have more extensive research before you buy this book. Go to Barnes and noble make sure this isn't the only book they give out because directions are simplified and ingredients are hard to come by where I live and technically it was mother's day gift for my mom yet she not at all interested in making the meals. All the purchasing was for nothing again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wholeheartedly recommended for personal, family, and community library cookbook collections

Take the most tasty, exotic ingredients from East and West, mix in a batch of finger foods and appetizers, and watch as the flavors explode. Drawn from the kitchens of Vancouver's popular Raku restaurant, Asian Tapas and Wild Sushi dishes up some of the most innovative and delicious tidbits around. Dip in and find a cuisine that will intrigue, excite, and satisfy your taste buds.Amazon.com Review
Trevor Hooper of Raku Restaurant in Vancouver, B.C., shows howto add Japanese izakaya to the Spanish tapas, Mediterraneanmezze, and Chinese dim sum already in your repertoire of smalldishes from around the world. In Japan, izakaya are served atpub-type drinking halls. Hooper creates his own wildly eclecticversions, using a fusion of European and Asian techniques andingredients, along with spot prawns, salmon jerky, and other uniquelylocal items from the Pacific Northwest.

Recipes are grouped by thefour seasons and presented in sections titled "Looking East" and"Looking West." Orange-Spice Lamb Shanks, Asparagus with MustardButter, and herbed new potatoes steamed in butter and garlic found inthe "Looking West" sections require ingredients stocked at most localsupermarkets, but Asian ingredients are needed for many of theEastern-style dishes, from fresh Chinese vegetables to tamarind paste, mirin (Japanese sweet cooking wine), and other staples. The sushisection focuses on maki, rolled sushi. Many use cookedingredients in the filling, as in the Chicken Satay Sushi Roll.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly is a Nibbler's Delight
On the cover of this wonderful cookbook of recipes from Trevor Hooper's Raku Restaurant are the words "A Nibbler's Delight of Fusion Cooking". I'm an old fashioned cook so I don't know about fusion in cooking, I always thought that had something to do with Neutron bombs or unlimited energy for free, but I do know good cooking. And let me tell you, you will not be disappointed in anything this book has to offer.

I've done the Yucatan Salmon with Tomatillo Sauce on page 69 and I have to tell you, this is a dish that had my mama drooling, and she is the queen of Mexican cooking. Oh yeah, it's hard for her to admit that lil old Katie can match her when it comes to serving up a mouth watering dish, but I did it last night and you can impress your mama or mama-in-law or the best man in your life if you get this book and serve up some of the Nibbler's Delights found inside.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes - shame there's no pictures
Luckily as a one time professional cook my imagination can fill in the blanks. For others this could be a reason not to purchase this book. It has lots of exciting & different ideas. It would be great to see what the author & chef came up with from a presentation perspective to compliment these recipes. It's a wonderful book and I hope the lack of visuals won't deter the more adventurous out there..

5-0 out of 5 stars Try it and you'll love it
I am very fond of appetizers or small portion of food before the meal. While I was in Spain, I had the opportunity to sample some tapas, that's why I wonder about this book on asian tapas. So I bought the book andsample some of the recipes. My comment on the recipes is excelent, nowonder some of their (Raku restaurant) customer keep coming even from theother part of the world. BTW, this book is the recipes of the Rakurestaurant in Vancouver. And even if the book mention Asian, some of therecipes originated in non asian countries like Berebere from Ethiopia orconfit of duck from France. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing that I would make.
I returned this book after taking a look through the recipes. There wasn't anything in here that I would actually make. The only recipe in the whole book that I might consider making was the one on the cover.William Sonoma tries too hard to be super fancy with everything they do.I wasn't looking for anything too simple (weenies rolled in crescent roll dough) but I wasn't looking for over the top recipes like this book has either.Almost none of the recipes in here sounded good to me.Too much eggplant caviar and hake type things for me to be happy with.

    4-0 out of 5 stars A cookbook turned party-planner
Served as a quick party guide, //Stonewall Kitchen Appetizers// is a cookbook turned party-planner. This fun, inspiring little book lends itself as an easy go-to for your next affair. The short book offers cocktail recipes, finger foods, small bowls (mostly soups), and small plates. Importantly, it offers party menus and tips like, "The more stations you offer, the more the party can flow from space to space as people move around the room tasting a bit of everything." (page 15)

Although you'll find many traditional recipes, you'll find them here with a new twist. Instead of packaged soup mix, you'll find Five-Onion Dip, a homemade blend of caramelized onion, garlic, and sour cream that stands in as the adult version of the childhood classic. Likewise, instead of a macaroni casserole, you'll find Mini Mac and Cheese, a gussied-up version baked in mini muffin tins so they can be hand-passed. How about an eloquent take on the ever-popular slider? Try the Lamb and Feta Sliders.

Not only will you find party-ready recipes; you'll also find expressive photographs to help you look like a pro when you mimic the artful display of these appetizers. Be prepared to take on the new title "Hostess with the Mostess."

I am hopelessly hooked on this series of "little" books by cookbook auther extrodinaire Kit Wohl. While small in stature, these books provide easy to follow methodology, mouth-watering photography (almost always by the multi-talented author) and creative presentations. Want to throw the perfect New Orleans celebration? Pick up these books, course by course, and select your menu. Often there will be substitutions suggested for hard to find local ingredients but rest assured, the end result will be darn close to the original. Not in the mood for cooking? Just reading the evocative prose will set your taste buds on edge and salivary glands a' flowin'....you'll find yourself rummaging through your pantry, at the ready for whipping up a quick taste of something Creole or Cajun.....A must have for all New Orleans-ofiles. 3-0 out of 5 stars Appetizers!....fold out...not a book.
First, this is not a book. It has a built in stand. This makes it feel much more dense than it really is.

As for the recipes...very good. I like that variety. I found much of the information to be new, to me at least. What is it with all of the expensive ingredients. Truffle oil...C'mon...I'm on a budget.

I think it is thin for the price. The information is good. I have not been able to find duplicate recipes on line elsewhere. ... Read more

Hard to believe that such s small slim volume (111 pages) could hold so very many temptations and gorgeous gotta'-try-this photos. But, it surely does.So believe I'll copy the Juli5 of blog/movie fame who tried to make all of Julia Childs' cookbook recipes in a year, and work my way through this compendium of savory suggestions.

One of the many things to admire about this book is that not only is it brimming with the best of small bites but it also includes recipes that do double duty - as appetizers or as a main course. For instance, the Lamb Fritters with Curry Sauce (p. 91).Ah, we added a green salad andenjoyed these con much gusto for supper. The fritters can be shaped and refrigerated for up to 3 hours should that be more convenient.

Another first-rate at home meal is the Tea-Smoked Chicken Wings (p. 34) paired with the Orange Broccoli Salad (p. 100).Need we say that not only are Johns's recipes palate pleasers but also very easy on the eyes, such as the Prosciuto-Wrapped Asparagus (p. 72) It looks gift wrapped - who wouldn't appreciate this present? Plus, it's so easy to do that we chosetwo other appetizers, put the three together and relished a very festive, fun dinner.

Johns thoughtfully includes a page for Equivalents, and a Sources page that lists useful stores.(We're in love with Italian food importer Manicaretti, which may be found online).

50 Great Appetizers is a delicious indispensable!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Starters
"50 Great Appetizers" by Pamela Sheldon Johns

A visually tantalizing selection of appetizers ranging from the familiar classics such as Bruschetta, to the more exotic; but equally delicious b'stilla. Included in this little gem are helpful suggestions for party planning, presentation, food safety, and themes.

From Italian to Farmers Market, a 50's party to an Island Party the ideas span the imagination of what appetizers can be. I like early on in the book the author stresses "Don't feel bound by the exact ingredients you see in the recipes that follow." Spoken like a true chef, in fact she is one. Through out the book the author makes suggestions for substitutes or alternatives for certain ingredients that may be hard to get in some areas or during certain seasons. "50 Great Appetizers" is a wonderful addition to anyone's kitchen or cookbook collection, I know it was to mine. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars its ok
its ok, but i was expecting more grafics, am a chef at a hotel and I always looking for ideas, recipies are ok, but more photos could make the difference

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I found very few recipes I was actually interested in making. We have "Appetizer" parties twice a year and I am always looking for good recipes.I could not find anything to add from this cookbook.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Luck Finding the Ingredients
I requested this book as a Christmas gift because of all the glowing reviews and I love appetizers for entertaining. My husband and I are always looking for new appetizer recipes and especially like ethnic recipes. This book seemed perfect.

Well, it's not.I do not doubt that the recipes taste good. They are probably also not very hard to make, but many, many of the recipes require ingredients that are not easy to find. Some of the meats used are venison, quail, dove, and baby goat. Many spices are also hard to find.I know that almost anything can be ordered over the internet, but I need recipes that I can go to the grocery store to get the ingredients.

If you have access to ethnic markets, you may enjoy this book, otherwise
beware that you may have trouble making a large number of the recipes in this book.

One other comment, there are photos in the book, but some of them are placed nowhere near the recipe they are for.

On a positive note:the descriptions of the different areas where the food comes from are very interesting and really add to the book. All in all though, I wish I had not asked for this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Atlas of delight!
This 600+ page tome has a wonderful cosmopolitan approach and organisation to it's wonderful recipes for appetizers from around the world. The background information is very helpful and educational. The ingredients are generally readily available, prep time is reasonable, and instructions are clearly written. Although not necessary, I wouldn't mind if it had more photos in the book or on a website, as some of the appetizersare such appetizing eye candy!

These recipes are perfect for serving at more formal "theme" dinners, and also for serving casual as "comfort food".

The recipes, with simple to complex flavors, are a a great complement to such books as "Hors D'Oeuvres by Eric Treuille, which has even simpler recipes, more pictures, with more of an emphasis on bite-sized portions, ideal for fast and good appetizers. Enjoy both books! ... Read more
