5-0 out of 5 stars Hugh's books make you the Chef Du Jour!
Spent the summer teaching my 19 year old son how to cook as he has a real appreciation for good/healthy/clean food and he wanted options other than the cafeteria while at college. Now that he's progressed beyond how to boil water, I gave him Fast Appetizers, Fast Entrees, and Fast Fish as he settled in to his new place. All books are fantastic but Appetizers has made him quite the hit with his college buddies. Great ideas, beautiful pictures, scrumptious recipes, and easy to implement. Thanks, Hugh!

‘I can't cook.’ I hear that all the time. And it's not that you can't--it's that you don't. It's that we've been wrecked by cooking shows with their millions of complicated steps and crazy-ass ingredients. Ingredients you can't find, let alone pronounce. That's not how I want to cook. I want to eat well, but I don't want it to take a year. Who's making stuff like 'Truffled Peruvian Mountain Squab with Chilled Framboise Foam' anyway?

"So this book is about food that's big in taste and small in effort. Just great-tasting stuff with no fancy techniques and definitely no over-the-top ingredients, as in everything-comes-from-a-regular-supermarket--cool concept, huh? It's just a bunch of recipes you'll easily be able to make and enjoy."

4-0 out of 5 stars Gotta Try this cookbook
I got this cookbook at the library first to see if I liked anything in it.That same night, I picked up a few ingredients to make the Honey/Garlic Spareribs. They were fantastic.Even my picky son liked it.And he rarely eats meat.I also made the Easy Bunuelos, and OMG were they easy.I made them with the puff pastry shells, so it made it even easier because there was no cutting involved.Everyone loved it.
He has a funny demeanor, no frills attitude that makes you want to read on. I must admit, I watched only a couple of his shows, and wasn't totally impressed, but after trying these recipes from his book, I'll be watching him more often.Great cookbook. You have to try it.Heading out to buy this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Cook Book Ever!
As stated in my title - I have never purchased a cook book quite like this one.Not only are the recipes fast, easy and taste incredible - this guy is hysterically funny! Yes funny in a cook book. This is also the only cookbook I have ever read from cover to cover.I have had this book for 4 days - and I have already tried 6 recipes - I intend to try almost all of them! YOu have got to get it!

Sam Zien, Sam the Cooking Guy: Just a Bunch of Recipes (Wiley, 2008)

I recently reviewed Michael Symon's Live to Cook, and while I was (of course, being a fan of Symon's restaurants) enamored with the recipes, I wasn't terribly fond of the tone of the surrounding prose. It was only a couple of days after finishing Live to Cook that I picked up Sam the Cooking Guy: Just a Bunch of Recipes. Unlike Symon, I'd never heard of Sam Zien before, other than the press release that alerted me to this book's existence. I've never seen his TV show; wasn't even aware he had one until I read the preface. So I've no idea how the guy comes across on TV. Perhaps, like Symon, he seems a lot more affable in front of a camera, but I found myself having exactly the same tone issues with Zien, though on the opposite end of things. Where Symon comes off overly didactic, Zien tries way too hard to be a hip wise-acre. Sorry, Sam, it doesn't work.

The recipes are good. But you know, it's a cookbook. I probably shouldn't give cookbooks as many props for good recipes as I do; after all, if the recipes weren't good, who would want to publish the book? Still, there's a lot of good, solid dishes to throw together, especially for beginning cooks (as opposed once again to Symon's book; there's a few recipes in there even I'm hesitant to tackle the first time). If you're still not quite sure of the difference between a whisk and a spatula, this is a good starting point. You may have to ignore Zien's tone in some of the interstitial prose, but don't pass the book up because of them. ***

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple Sam, Sensational Recipes
I found myself looking up Sam's recipes online all the time, so figured it was time to just buy his cookbook.Love that his recipes don't call for 10+ items, so I don't look like Rachel Ray carrying 10 ingredients in my arms from the pantry to the counter. His recipes are simple but always seem to include at least 1 ingredient that makes them unique (in a good way).My kind of cooking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sam's the man

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm not the Velveeta type!
I purchased this book based on the 5-star review. It has a lot of recipes and entertaining ideas. For me, it was not the right book. Many of the recipes have A LOT of fatty ingredients.I am not fond of tons of butter, do not eat Velveeta and entertain to a higher level than cocktail wieners.I was looking for something more elegant... I returned the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Book of Appetizers
I was very disappointed in this item - it was going to be a gift, but it was used, torn and yellowed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A review from México
Very good recipes, excellent pictures (one for each recipe!), easy to follow instructions. You know I also have for these series of books, the books Cheesecakes, Chocolate, Light Desserts, Afternoon tea, and all of them are excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction.
In its roughly 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.

This installment, the Book of Appetizers presents recipe suggestions for all major types of starters, from seafood appetizers to dips and finger food.Special chapters are dedicated to pork, chicken, beef, cheese and egg appetizers.Classics such as assorted canapes and sandwiches, cheese bites, chicken satay, deep-fried camembert, dolmades, guacamole, hummus bi tahini, marinated mushrooms and artichokes, mini-pizzas, mushrooms and blue cheese, oysters Rockefeller, piroshki, quiche and spring rolls appear next to unique recipes such as anchovy beignets, bacon rolls, caviar croutons, chicken and leek rolls, chicken pistachio pate, gingered fruit kebabs, salmon and avocado mousse and crispy almond squid.

From aioli and crudites to pickled vegetables and yakitori, this collection of recipes, while not all-encompassing, is a great introduction to the endless possibilities of starting a meal - and at a relative bargain price, to boot. Also recommended: This series' installments on antipasti and finger foods.

There are good pictures showing each entry in the book. The recipes are for very exotic foods. Some examples are egg and nori rolls, prosciutto roulades, rumaki, barbecued csabai and pickled squid. Others are lessexotic, but very time consuming.

Might as well face the music now: at some time in your life, you will find yourself assembling a Goat Cheese Log with Sun-DriedTomatoes and Basil. Guests are approaching. Time is running low. Atsome time in your life you are going to need a book like SusanEpstein's A Little Something. You don't want to have to thinkup stuff like Baked Clam Dip Loaf on your own, do you? Let Susan do itfor you, with more than 150 recipes packed into this handyreference. Put this book on the shelf, keep your pantry and freezerstocked, and you can handle anything from an avalanche of hungryteenagers to a ponderously boring book club.

Susan Epstein getsright in, rolls up her sleeves, and produces food you might even wantto eat. (When confronted with a wide choice of hors d'oeuvres, howmany do you actually try and enjoy?) She doesn't just settle for partynibbles, chips, and dips--she goes right for the throat of late-nighthunger spasms with such treats as chopped eggs, mushrooms, and onionson black bread; an open-faced roast beef "sandwich" (it calls forMiddle Eastern flat bread); crispy onion rings with a spicy dippingsauce; four versions of nachos; and romaine burritos with blue cheese, chicken, apples, and pecans.

Epstein's theory is that there aremany occasions other than parties when a little something is just whatthe doctor ordered, something just the other side of usual fare. Herbook, A Little Something, delivers while leaving snootypretensions behind on the curb. --Schuyler Ingle ... Read more

I'm always on the lookout for interesting appetizer recipes -- we entertain a lot.The recipes in this book range from hot to cold, old favorites like mini pizzas to really different ideas, such as phyllo cups with several different fillings. This book is BEAUTIFULLY photographed and the recipes are not so complex as to be daunting.I particularly liked the suggestions on creating interesting shapes.Visually the appetizers are simply gorgeous. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Ordered this book when looking for specific books on appetizers.Must say I'm quite pleased with it.Most receipes are easy to follow, with basic ingredients. It has 'menus' for events and special arrangements in the book too. That was a great surprise and very useful.I will look for other books like this for future purchases.

4-0 out of 5 stars well laid out, easy to use
this book covers a lot of material with ahuge selection of hors d'oeuvres, all different skill levels (mainly easy to moderate), great pictures and most of all helpful tips. I reach for this book over and over again.I used to bypass this being a bit of a snob but time after time as a last resort I pulled it out and it had what I needed.I no longer reach for it last but pull it out with my other favorite and often more costly books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick, simple, easy entertaining.
I reviewed this book along with the other Pillsbury C'mon Over!: Hassle-Free, Hustle-Free Entertaining appetizer cookbook thinking they would have many of the same recipes, however, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it did not.I couldn't find any recipes that were the same.I really liked this Pillsbury Appetizer cookbook, it had a great goat cheese crostini that I served at a holiday buffet with Sauvignon Blanc wine.It was delish.

I also made the Petite Stuffed Pizza snacks for a son's sleepover and they were no quick and simple to make.It was made using refrigerated parmesan breadsticks spread out and cut into squares.I was very impressed with the ease of use of this cookbook. There are quite a few pictures all clearly showing the foods.Every recipe comes with serving size, calories, fat, and exchange information. It would certainly help those needing that information.

I would also recommend the Pillsbury C'Mon Over book as well. I really liked it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Book for Someone Looking for New and EasyIdeas
I got this book from the library to see if there were any new appetizers I would like to make. There were so many, that I decided it was worth the money to just buy the book.I'm so happy that I did.The recipes are clear and do not call for ingredients that are hard to find or "exotic" in nature.Just your basic and everyday ingredients. It was well worth buying.I've used the recipes for many a Sunday football days!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous photos, easy to follow instructions....
This book is FABULOUS! There are so many photos and so many simple, easy and excellent appetizers. I'm a very picky eater, but I have tried 6 of the appetizers already and received rave reviews from my guests and I loved them myself. I have already repeated one of the appetizers 3 times and I've only owned the book for 2 months! For anyone looking for a new twist with easy to find, everyday products, this is the book for you! I can't recommend it enough! ... Read more
