3-0 out of 5 stars Just okay
This book had a few paintings which inspired me to try painting something new.I didn't think it gave much insight into creating certain effects.I saw the previous review complaining that it was so similar to his previous books.I have not seen them so this book was fine in that regard.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is nothing more than rehash of at least existing books
Its so disappointing to look foward to a new book about painting instruction and find its nothing more than a rehash of at least three booksthat I am aware of.Ninty percent of the paintings and related comments Ihave seen in earlier books. If I had had the opportunity to thumb throughthis book prior to buying it I certainly would not have bought it.This isone of the weaknesses of buying books online.I will be more careful inthe future. I know you wont't publish this review but if you have contactwith publishers they should certainly be made aware of customersdisappointment with this practice ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Grand barns of the nineteenth and early twentieth century
For all those who love Iowa, the landscape and the barns of Iowa!

This comprehensive book documents the picturesque barns of an Iowa that will never exist again as today's farmers choose metal buildings to replace the grand barns of the nineteenth and early twentieth century.

More than 160 barns, located in virtually every county of Iowa, are shown in this interesting collection of black-and-white photographs with text by Lowell Soike, a historian with the State Historical Society of Iowa. Penfield Press of Iowa City is the publisher of the second edition of this work,

The photographs date back to 1983 when the book was first published. Many people have used this book as a guide to finding the round barns of Iowa. While many of the barns are still standing, others have disappeared. Most round barns are not in use today.

One chapter shows the moving of the Tonsfeldt barn from the edge of Le Mars to the Plymouth County Fairgrounds in Le Mars, where it stands today. Tonsfeldt built the barn in 1919 to show purebred livestock and to feature Ito's Perfection, his prize Hereford bull.

Ideal for home and a wonderful gift! ... Read more

Product Description
During her time as an art student in New York City, Mary Keithan never imagined that one day she would drive the state of Michigan's labyrinthine back roads in search of architectural subjects for her photographs. But, in 1990, shortly after acquiring an 8" x 10" view camera, she began just such an odyssey. In the process she captured on film and preserved images of the rural landscape's most endangered visual treasures, its aging, historic barns.

Many of her "subjects" are in poor condition; many no longer stand. And while we might expect a photographic series on aging barns to be a sad chronicle of America's rural decline, instead Keithan gives us a visual story of endurance and perseverance, of a way of life that in our modern times continues to thrive.

What Keithan has captured with her camera and presented in Michigan's Heritage Barns is enriched with her own narrative, often including interesting histories from the barn owners themselves. Photographs from most of Michigan's eighty counties are included to create a collection that celebrates Michigan's rural heritage as no other does." ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Photos!
This book has great photos but I was expecting more information about the people who built the different styles of barns. The background information is really missing in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding photographic history/survey of Michigan's barns.
In 1990 the author purchased a camera and began a trip across Michigan's back roads in search of old barns to photography: this is the culmination of her journey, adding historic notes which will prove particularlyinteresting to residents of Michigan as well as those studying oldstructures. The black and white images have themselves become history: manyof these old barns no longer stand. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must" for students of colonial era American architecture.
In Old Barns In The New World: Reconstructing History, co-authors Richard Babcock and Lauren Stevens combine an historical survey of architecture and colonial craft, with thirty years of personal experience at hands-onrestoration of dozens of barns. Richard Babcock is able to infer fromancient construction techniques both the date and nationality of a barn'sbuilders which ranges from Dutch, German and English to Scotch-Irish,French, and the slave population of New England and eastern New York. OldBarns In The New World is a "must" for students of colonial eraAmerican architecture, and will prove to be deeply enjoyable, informativereading for American history buffs and old barn enthusiasts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deconstruction of another sort.
Richard Babcock studies, dismantles, moves, and rebuilds old barns, and is a recognized authority on colonial agricultural buildings.
Seeing barns as expressions of national identity as well as responses to the particular agricultural demands of the time, Babcock's expert analysis of joinery techniques and painstaking research have led him beyond description to controversial speculations about the nationality of the earliest white settlers, and the prevalence of slave labor in the northern colonies.
His work, enhanced with excellent drawings and photos, will be of interest to anyone interested in colonial life, and essential for students of agricultural architecture.

Product Description
During the 1950s and 1960s, the use of local building styles and traditional materials seemed to be on the wane. But shortly after that the historic architecture of the American Southwest rapidly began to win a new popularity. The turnaround was partly a product of the back-to-earth movement, the energy crises of the 1970s, and a reawakening of interest in regional history. But it received a boost, too, from advances in the use of solar energy--many of the new developments being especially adaptable to adobe structures. Individuals planning their dream house led the way, but many home builders and architects, taking note of the demand, followed the trend setters. At the same time, "how-to" books and articles on Southwestern traditional architecture began to find a large readership. Among those in the forefront of this small phenomenon was artist and writer Myrtle Stedman. A long-time resident of the Santa Fe, New Mexico area, she had been a champion of the old ways in building for much of her adult life. Indeed, her books "Adobe Architecture" and "Adobe Remodeling and Fireplaces" in significant measure helped spark the return to traditional construction. Mrs. Stedman has now added to her earlier accomplishments with the present sketchbook, focusing on the numerous fascinating and picturesque aspects of rural architecture, focusing on northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. Her splendid pen and ink drawings, reminding one of Eric Sloane's work on rural America, have a three-fold value. In the first instance, they serve as an accurate documentary record of features and styles that comprise the unique architecture of this area. Secondly, the drawings will prove a boon to those wishing to restore buildings and improve rural properties along traditional lines. And finally, the artistic merit and natural charm of the sketchbook should appeal to all those who possess an aesthetic appreciation for the Southwestern landscape, be it natural or that part which is manmade. ... This book is an excellent source of information about the cantilever barns and some of the people to built them. I am a decendent of John Trotter, whose family built several of the barns. I visited Sevierville yesterday and was able to follow the map and see the barns myself. I didn't know about any of this until I ran across your book in a local store. Thank you very much. Product Description
For the Bicentennial Year, The American Museum has selected this extended excerpt from the book An Age of Barns as a bonus to Museum members. The artistry of author-illustrator Eric Sloane reflects the human ecology of early America. The diversity of barns across tghe landscape is a part of America's past. Already many of the woodworking skills that handcrafted these buildings are gone. The barns, too, are slowely decaying and returning to the earth. Hopefully, this issue will preserve for a while longer the essence of one notable portrait of America's heritage. ... Read more
