Excerpt: Scroope is an architecture and culture journal run from the University of Cambridge Department of Architecture by its alumni and current students. It often presents the work of its faculty (with contributions from Dalibor Vesely, Peter Carl, Alan Short, Marcial Echenique) as well as faculty from other universities (Jonathan Hill, Helen Mallinson) and practising architects (Jonathon Sergison, Stephen Bates). Scroope tries to reflect the diversity and character of the work that takes place in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Cambridge and acknowledges the diversity of practice and its varied philosophical and practical basis. The Martin Centre's technological focus is balanced by the philosophical and historical understanding of the main Faculty programme, and new technological research can be presented alongside research into the understanding of architecture and its culture. Each issue is given a broad theme and contributions are invited by the editorial board. Leadership of the journal changes from year to year. The journal is named for 1-5 Scroope Terrace, where the University of Cambridge Faculty of Architecture shares a building with the Faculty of Art History. In a narrower sense, the term De Stijl is used to refer to a body of work from 1917 to 1931 founded in the Netherlands. De Stijl is also the name of a journal that was published by the Dutch painter, designer, writer, and critic Theo van Doesburg (18831931), propagating the group's theories.
