Product Description

Building Projects in China is the first publication on the book market to give a comprehensive overview of the planning activities of foreign architects in China. This practical handbook outlines legal framework conditions, introduces the Chinese building market, and gives practical descriptions of the execution of projects on site. To complete the picture, international planning firms share their experience on projects of the most various sizes and types in China. What makes projects in China so challenging is the tension between the traditional, historical planning environment of an Asian big city and a modernity that is in many ways already ahead of the Western world.

Interest in the Chinese building and planning market has been steadily growing for many years. Now, for the first time, a repository of knowledge as exhaustively researched as this one is finally available.

Product Description
This is the first book to provide a comprehensive overview of the activities of architects and engineers outside their own countries: a practical handbook which investigates fundamental aspects such as acquisition, implementation, economic viability and the legal framework of overseas commissions. Concise yet in-depth, information of this kind has never before been consolidated across Europe although the international activities of European architects and engineers have increased greatly not least because of the open EU market. The book is aimed primarily at planners in Europe who are in the process of gaining or wish to gain experience in other countries. ... Read more

Cesar Pelli's work is so elegant and respectful to its environment. Here in Houston his Four Leaf Towers, though built in the mid 80's, are still the cities most visually stimulating condo towers. This book does a wonderful job of showing his work in the best light, with amazing images. The book is also well researched and easy to navigate.I highly recomment it to anyone interested in fascinating architecture, with a touch of elegance.

Product Description
I think that all architecture comes from what went before. And how carefully one hews to precedent or how many liberties one takes, in my view, is part of a larger set of judgments as to what is, or could be called, “appropriate.” Appropriate from every point of view, especially from the site, the cultural expectations of a community and of the specific client.
—Robert A. M. Stern

Central to the work of Robert A. M. Stern is a commitment to an architecture that reinterprets the past to serve contemporary life. This monograph, the fifth volume since Stern opened his practice in 1969, explores the application of this principle to a wide range of building types, including libraries, university buildings, cultural centers, offices, towers, and private residences.

Focused on the years 2004 through 2009, an exceptionally productive period for Stern’s firm, this volume includes designs for the Miami Beach, Jacksonville, and Clearwater Public Libraries in Florida, the vast Zubiarte retail complex in Bilbao, Spain, two new residential colleges at Yale University, the widely acclaimed 15 Central Park West condominium in New York, Comcast, a crystalline addition to the Philadelphia skyline, and the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, Texas.

In a conversation with renowned architecture critic Paul Goldberger, Stern discusses the principles that have guided the firm since its inception, focusing on the collaborative nature of the work and the importance of precedent and context. He also describes his own role as an educator, as dean of the architecture school at Yale University, and his deep interest in the history of architecture, first awakened during his student days at Yale. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This is the fifth Robert A.M. Stern:Buildings and Projects book that I have purchased for my personal library. The man and his firm's work remain genius. However, in this most recent edition published by The Monacelli Press, the site plan images are printed so small that it is impossible to study the floor plans.Photographs of the completed projects, however, are often printed on full page spreads.Given that this is an architecture book and not a glossy periodical dedicated to interior design, I would prefer to review the plans without a magnifying glass.Overall, this book will be a disappointment for anyone who purchases the Stern titles expecting to review the plans.

Product Description
James Stirling's death in 1992 cut short the fruitful later phase of a creative career which began in the 1950s. Stirling inaugurated this second phase in the 1970s with his ambitious urban-planning proposals for the area of the Cathedral and the Wailraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne. In 1975 he established his main London office in partnership with Michael Wilford. International recognition resulted in many spectacular commissions for the team, consolidating their reputation and their influence on a younger generation of architects. This is a retrospective documentation of their achievement. Critical appraisals, technical data and extensive illustrations record many important buildings, including the Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart; the Science Centre in Berlin; the Clore Gallery for the Turner Collection at the Tate Gallery, London; and the Performing Arts Center at Cornell University, New York State. ... ... Read more

Product Description
Written for contractors and endorsed by the Associated General Contractors of America

Written specifically for contractors, this "how-to" book enables you to meet the challenges of green building construction. You'll discover how constructing environmentally friendly, sustainable buildings influences project management, delivery, documentation, and risk. Moreover, the book guides you through these important considerations at all phases of a green construction project, including:

  • Bidding and contracting
  • Managing green design when the contractor works as a design builder
  • Subcontracting
  • Procurement
  • Construction management
  • Project commissioning and closeout

This book is endorsed by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) and was written with the assistance and advice of a specially assembled AGC task force. With a focus on the green building process from the contractor's viewpoint, the book avoids endorsing any one green building rating system in favor of presenting the business fundamentals common to them all.

Throughout the presentation, flowcharts and other features offer working tools for successfully managing green construction projects. Plus, real-world case studies developed through discussions with the actual contractors involved help you understand exactly what to expect and how to best manage constructing a green building. In short, this is one book that you need to have on hand to be a part of the rapidly growing green building movement. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Required text at Harvard GSD
Integrated Practice in Architecture is now a required textbook in the course, "Integrated Project Delivery," at Harvard's Graduate School of Design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this to be well-prepared to face the profession's and industry's future
Just as integrated project delivery (IPD) offers a convenient and efficient single point of responsibility for the entire project undertaking, George Elvin's Integrated Practice in Architecture offers a convenient and effective single source compendium for this important new architectural design and construction delivery system and practice. Of the book's many great features, including the author's own experience in design and construction, extensive glossary and thorough index, perhaps the most valuable is the candid information Elvin manages to garner from the interviews themselves (there are over 50 of them!) with various professionals that are currently in the trenches working collaboratively with IPD. This book, the publishing world's inaugural attempt to so thoroughly define IPD - described here as the fastest growing method of project delivery - is groundbreaking in that it covers material not found anywhere else between two covers and should remain the most referenced text for this important subject for the foreseeable future. Of particular interest are the book's chapters on Communication in the integrated project team and Stewardship as one faces the future of IPD. Coupled with Finith Jernigan's comprehensive and ambitious BIG BIM little bim - The practical approach to Building Information Modeling - Integrated practice done the right way! (Paperback,) any architect, engineer, student, construction manager, contractor or building owner will be well-prepared to face the design profession's and construction industry's future.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Be prepared to be happily astonished"
Architectural Record's review:

Ignore the ponderous title and be prepared to be happily astonished: George Elvin has written a concise, crisply crafted primer on interdisciplinary architectural thinking.

Elvin's expertise comes from a quarter century of experience running a design-build firm, plus years of teaching, most recently at Ball State's Building Futures Institute.

The book's terrible title notwithstanding, Elvin is not selling a simplistic joining of design-build and fast-track delivery through BIM software. He invites building professionals of all persuasions to recognize that the 21st century presents an array of rapidly changing economic, political, and environmental conditions that can offer opportunities for open-ended design, integrated interdisciplinary teams, and BIM software utilization. By carefully narrating experiences from 50 architecture firms, he maps the possibilities and risks that come into play when architects collaborate with all stakeholders and shows how good communication makes such teamwork work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated the Day it was Published
The term "integrated practice" was quickly dispatched in 2007 when the California Council of the AIA presented "Integrated Project Delivery - A Working Definition" at the AIA National Convention - and for good reason. Integrated practice is an internal affair for each of the Owner, Architect and Contractor. Integrated Project Delivery brings all parties involved in the development of a project into the discussion. In addition, for the time being - and for some time into the future - any practice is going to involve both traditional and integrated project delivery. Finally, I found the book confusing in the way it tends to equate BIM with Integrated Practice, when the two are certainly seperable, if not independent. I don't know of a better book out there at present, but I wish I'd waited for one before buying. ... Read more

74. Ordinariness and Light: Urban Theories, 1952-1960 and Their Application in a Building Project, 1963-1970

Editorial Review

Product Description
Until recently the ideas of Alison and Peter Smithson have been known mainly to those professionally involved in architecture and urban design. This is so because they have presented their ideas usually in project form, accompanied by elliptical texts designed to prevent the building up of rigid thought patterns in the minds of those studying them.

Ordinariness and Light, by contrast, is an extended exploration of their theories and work over the past seventeen years, in which not only their aesthetic but also their political and emotional concerns are made plain. The book brings together a previously unpublished long text of 1952-53, "Urban Re-identification," and a sequence of later essays and statements. All this material has been revised for the present volume, and provided with a linking commentary.

The general theme is "the invention of an architecture structured by notions of association." The authors argue that the form of the city and the town must correspond to the human needs of the present; looser knit than in the past, even the quite recent past; more open and changing. And for city and town to correspond to this pattern of society there must be better systems of physical communication, and new form-concepts through which society can recognize and realize its new self.

The arguments, examples, and illustrations in the book show how a very small shift in our way of looking at the ordinary things that go to make up cities and towns could restore to them their rich classic connotations. Houses would once more feel like places of adventure, as well as security; roads would be made to give a sense of cohesion and connection, as well as of release. For the Smithsons, to sense an "ordering" in things is to feel liberated and free to use them. Ordinariness and Light will enable all who are exercised about the deterioration of urban life to share their dream of cities that can breathe. It may help, perhaps, to generate in society at large that kind of committed participation that their notion of "ordering" implies. ... Read more

Product Description

Innovative, flexible and pragmatic: the award-winning office of Galletti & Matter.

Claude Matter and Olivier Galletti, two young Swiss architects, have developed an essentially pragmatic approach based on sensitivity to location. They begin with an initial concept, not a definitive answer, open to modification during the construction process. The creation of various and distinctive spaces corresponding to situations and demands that crystallize on location, rather than the realisation of a preconceived homogeneous design.

This volume, the first in a new series on young architects from Suisse Romande edited by Bruno Marchand, Professor at the Ecole Polytechnique F d rale de Lausanne, presents built projects by Galletti & Matter, including the School Building Collombey and the Espace Gruy re exhibition and cultural centre in Bulle. ...
