Excerpt: Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County, Maryland, USA is about 15 miles (24 km) from Interstate 68 on U.S. Route 219. It lies just west of the Allegheny Front on a large plateau known as the Tablelands or Allegheny Highlands. Its location at the southernmost end of Meadow Mountain places it west of the Eastern Continental Divide and within the Mississippi River watershed. The lake is a result of the Youghiogheny Hydroelectric Company hydroelectric project on Deep Creek in the 1920s. Deep Creek Dam, located about 8 miles (13 km) north of Oakland, Maryland, consists of an earth and rock wall dam across a tributary of the Youghiogheny River. Construction of the dam began in 1923 and was completed in 1925. The hydroelectric plant became operational in 1928. The lake was purchased by the state of Maryland in 2000 from the Pennsylvania Electric Company and public access to the lake is provided by Deep Creek Lake State Park. Deep Creek Lake is the largest inland body of water in the state of Maryland and is home to a wide variety of freshwater fish and aquatic birds. It covers approximately 3,900 acres (16 km) and has 69 miles (111 km) of shoreline. Like all lakes in Maryland, it is man-made. Deep Creek Lake has evolved as the centerpiece of tourism in Western Maryland. Popular water-based attractions are recreational boating, sailing, swimming, water skiing, wake boarding and fishing. Fish commonly caught by anglers include: Early nomadic hunters and gatherers, followed by Native American hunters, roamed through the mountains of Garrett County, Maryland but have left little record of their presence. Beginning in the 1700s, early settlers to the region eked a subsistence exis...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=24970163 ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars There are better DoDAF books out there
I could never get over the poor publishing quality of this book; which made it hard for me to want to read and use this book.DoDAF has even changed since the publication of this book so the material is now a little dated.I also purchased DoDAF Wizdom and thought it provided a much better overview of DoDAF.I even used it as a reference after the class...which is saying a lot about a textbook!Though Wizdom is also a little dated due to changes in DoDAF, given the choice, I would recommend purchasing it instead of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Interesting
It's rare that you find any written material that explains DoDAF. (However, since this book is older, it doesn't have the 2.0 information.) Still it is a information and interest guide to the complex system that is DoDAF.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed by print quality
Don't buy this book unless the publisher adds a CD or provides a web page to download readable copies of the numerous power point slides.

A large portion of the book is small and often blurry reproductions of power point slides. There are also a fair number of typos and sentence fragments.

The actual content isn't too bad, but the publishing quality is ridiculously poor for a very expensive paper back book.If I had not used an underliner on my copy, I would be trying to get my money back.

5-0 out of 5 stars a very useful engineering book
If I ever had to select the best books in Civil Engineering, I wouldn't hesitate to nominate Design of Small Dams among them. A classic book, a must-have publication. Its presentation is concise, yet comprehensive.

Every engineer should have a DSD in the office or at home: it can be used for filter design, water flow, field compaction controls and a series of day-to-day technical needs. It is a book not only for dam designers, but to all of those who need a handy book to solve engineering problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars The reference book for dam engineers
I'm a hydraulic engineer specialized in dam design.

Small Dams is still the best book concerning "general" dam engineering.

It covers all the key subjects and includes extremely useful charts, formulas and examples.

In our firm we have five copies of it and all the young engineers should study it by heart.

If you don't want to buy it you can download an electronic copy from the USBR site.

However I strongly suggest to buy it if you're involved in dam design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Text
This is an excellent reference text for all Engineers and designers involved in the design of dams. It is easy to read and provides numerous examples of the content applied to actual dams. Well recommended forstudents and operating professionals alike. A must for the personallibrary. ... Read more

Product Description
The mighty Colorado River flows through some of the hottestand driest areas of the United States. In the early 1930's, farmersand businessmen hoped to transform these desert areas into farmland byharnessing the wild Colorado. To do this, they hoped to build agigantic dam in the Black Canyon that would hold back the river andcreate a massive lake. That dam Hoover Dam would take fouryears and the work of over 5,000 people to build. At the time it wascompleted, Hoover Dam was the largest dam in the world. Today, itgenerates 2 million kilowatts of hydroelectric power for three states, including California, and is still considered one of the seven modernengineering wonders of the United States.

Our nation's unique identity has been formed, in large part, by themonuments and landmarks we have erected. Structures such as the famousGateway Arch in St. Louis and the Washington Monument in Washington,D.C., stand today as permanent reminders of the people and events thathave built a strong America. Many of these structures made historyeven as they were created; most integrated the latest in design andtechnology and required the skills of thousands of workers. For thefirst time, the Building America series chronicles the massiveundertakings that mark some of the greatest triumphs of humanengineering. The fact that these projects were even attempted, andthen completed successfully, is a testament to the boldness of humaningenuity and a tribute to the brave spirit of the American people. Itis that special spirit that is now captured in the pages of theBuilding America series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid read
This story reveals a great deal about the blood, sweat and tears that went into a massive project. When we go to visit the dam, or drive over it quickly, or watch the water spray out below, we seldom even wonder what it took to make it all come together. It would be very interesting to estimate the cost and time for this project these days; it simply could not be done as fast, what with all the regulatory hoops to leap through, and HR best practices to vie with. The book is a fast read and very interesting.I'd recommend it to any wannabe project managers and anyone else who plans to visit the dam or become an engineer(high school book reports...).Have fun. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Love the dams -- great book. Pricey
I really liked this book, particularly the fact that it shows dams from every state, talks about the various styles of how dams are built, and has fantastic pictures. I find myself going back to it regularly to look something up, or just to enjoy seeing the various places it highlights. If you like dams and bridges, you'll enjoy having this in your collection. All that said, it's very pricy for the content. That's what brought the review down.

4-0 out of 5 stars More bridges please
This is a wonderful book for bridge and dam lovers. It manages to cover quite a bit, but could use an update, longer discussion of each project, and MORE BRIDGES!But then, you can't have too many interesting bridges in my experience.

The book covers bridges and dams coast-to-coast as they were in 1989, as well as some which were already gone as of that date.Recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Forget the book, use the web
I have to say this book was a great disappointment I was expecting lots of information and some great pictures.

What this book is can be classified more as a dictionary or an encyclopedia.it's a small book (5x10).The pictures are small and in black and white. And there's maybe a paragraph on each structure. Not much information at all - probably best used as a table reference.

This is book is from 1988 - back before the internet was a big thing. So not only are structures from the last 20 years not in here, you could probably use Google to find more information on any of the structures in here.

It was a good book in it's time, but really not worth your purchase today. ... Read more

Product Description
Trained as both architects and historians, Andrew Zega and Bernd H. Dams are skilled artists known for their expert restitutions of historic buildings, rendered in a realistic watercolor technique that has become their trademark. Originally published as a limited-edition collector’s item that sold for $1,100, this affordable reprinted edition presents fifty charming images, the results of more than a decade of study of historic European and American architecture and garden ornament. Thirty-six of the works presented here delve into the past, reconstructing exceptional historical structures from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century with a predominately French style. The remaining are the authors’ original designs, beautifully detailed works inspired by these exotic and whimsical structures. Hubert de Givenchy, in his preface to Chinoiseries, describes these images as "precious documents [that] retrace an époque when taste, extravagance, and a sense offantasy were an essential part of the way in which parks and gardens were embellished, by perfectly inscribing them in nature, then furnishing them with dreams." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Unusual
Bought for a friend, this book impressed me as much as it did him! Gorgeous and unusual, a fine addition to the library of any aesthete ot architectural enthusiast!

4-0 out of 5 stars DETAILED AND INFORMATIVE
This remains the essential guidebook to Chinoiserie.I only wish that there were more photos of how Chinoiserie is being used today in fresh, new and inventive ways. But the historical images and text are superb.

5-0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC BOOK ON CHINOISERIES
This is one of the definative books on Chinoiseries, when it came out it was cost prohibative to purchase, but this reprint is much more moderatly priced.Really, the book is beautiful and the knowledge of the two authors on this subject is unparalled. For me, Chinoiseries really is an aquired taste, it is gorgeous on many levels, but very distinct. It's like you either love it or hate it, there seems to be no middle ground on this style. If you have any interest in this style or just appreciate beautiful books then i cant imagine you not loving this book; really the last word on Chinoiseries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chinoiseries So Chic!
ChinoiseriesThis book is full of so many architectual chinoiseries that I never knew existed. One wants to remove the print pages from the book for framing.I stayed transfixed on the illustrations of each page and it is as if I were transplanted into a chic fantasy world. The style and the colors are awesome.I found it difficult to read about each particular structure as my eyes kept being diverted to the illustrations.I had some reservations about ordering this book as I did not need another coffee table book; however, the quality that is found among the pages makes this a must-see for the artist in all of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful!
If you're into Chinoserie at all, this is a beautiful addition to your design library- that is, if you can refrain from cutting up the book to hang the pages on the wall. I couldn't, and now I have a beautiful graphic collection of framed panels from this book over my living room sofa. I'm buying a second copy of the book just so I can keep one to read. The text accompanying each structure is great reading- I especially loved seeing Marie Anoinette's merry-go-round from Versailles. ... Read more
