5-0 out of 5 stars Garden Follies of Pre-Revolutionary France
Bernd H. Dams researched the architectural and garden history, and Andrew Zega produced the fifty watercolors illustrating the pavilions and follies of this book which accompanied a pair of exhibitions in New York City and Paris in the mid 1990s.Each chapter is devoted to folly in chronological order and also includes period engravings and paintings, original architectural plans, and portraits of the architects and patrons. Also, there is a Visitor's Guide which lists the 18 surviving, or partially surviving, follies both public and private, and when they can be visited. This is a book that is as informative as it is beautiful -- a must for all admirers of the decorative arts of the Ancien Regime. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! An arch dam is a type of dam that is curved and commonly built with concrete. The arch dam is a structure that is designed to curve upstream so that the force of the water against it, known as hydrostatic pressure, presses against the arch, compressing and strengthening the structure as it pushes into its foundation or abutments. An arch dam is most suitable for narrow gorges or canyons with steep walls of stable rock to support the structure and stresses. Since they are the thinner than any other dam type, they require much less construction material, making them economical and practical in remote areas. The development of arch dams throughout history began with the Romans in the 1st century BC and after several designs and techniques were developed, relative uniformity was achieved in the 20th century. ... Excerpt: Saint Catherine's Monastery (Greek: ) lies on the Sinai Peninsula, at the mouth of an inaccessible gorge at the foot of Mount Sinai in Saint Katherine city in Egypt. The monastery is Greek Orthodox and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to the UNESCO report (60100 ha / Ref: 954) and website hereunder, this monastery has been called the oldest working Christian monastery in the world although the Monastery of Saint Anthony, situated across the Red Sea in the desert south of Cairo, also holds claim to that title. St. Catherine's Monastery possesses some of the earliest icons in existence, including this 6th-century hot wax icon. The oldest record of monastic life at Sinai comes from the travel journal written in Latin by a woman named Egeria about 381-384. She visited many places around the Holy Land and Mount Sinai, where, according to the Hebrew Bible, Moses received the Ten Commandments from God. The monastery was built by order of Emperor Justinian I (reigned 527-565), enclosing the Chapel of the Burning Bush ordered to be built by Helena, the mother of Constantine I, at the site where Moses is supposed to have seen the burning bush; the living bush on the grounds is purportedly the original. It is also referred to as "St. Helen's Chapel." The site is sacred to Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Though it is commonly known as Saint Catherine's, the full, official name of the monastery is, The Sacred and Imperial Monastery of the God-Trodden Mount of Sinai, and the patronal feast of the monastery is the Transfiguration. The site was associated with Saint Catherine of Alexandria (whose relics were purported to ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=477189 ... Read more

Excerpt:Boston Light is a lighthouse located on Little Brewster Island in outer Boston Harbor, Massachusetts. The first lighthouse to be built on the site dates back to 1716, and was the first lighthouse to be built in what is now the United States. The current lighthouse dates from 1783, is the second oldest working lighthouse in the US (after Sandy Hook Lighthouse in New Jersey), and is the only lighthouse to still be actively staffed by the United States Coast Guard. The structure was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964. The first keeper of Boston Light was George Worthylake, who drowned, along with his wife and daughter, when returning to the island in 1718. During the American Revolution, the original lighthouse was held by British forces and was attacked and burnt on two occasions by American forces. As the British forces withdrew in 1776, they blew up the tower and completely destroyed it. The lighthouse was eventually reconstructed in 1783, to the same 75-foot (23 m) height as the original tower. In 1859 it was raised to its present heigh...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=5607669 ...
