Very high performance event-driven SOA is essential for building discoverable, loosely-coupled services which will meet the volume, transaction rate, and implementation cost threshold for real-time Web Services.

Ron Schmelzer from ZapThink will discuss how four coupling models (request/reply, publish/subscribe, routed events, and reliable messaging) underpin event-driven SOA. Greg Brown, Director at Tarari, will show how hardware-accelerated Random Access XML (RAX) is used to dramatically increase sustained throughput and peak capacity of each of these coupling models while lowering deployment costs. ... The need to create a corporate identity has taken on a vitally important role ever since consumers decided that not only did they look for the products they needed, but also the brand name that best "represented" them. A certain harmony must exist between consumer and trademark, and the product should be defined within spaces capable of communicating aspects of its image that go beyond its technical and functional characteristics. Whereas in the past the main aim was to teach and inform, now other concepts have gradually come into play like persuading, captivating and surprising the consumer: in short, communicating a brand name's values. This new situation means that projects must look for new ways to establish an affinity with the user. As a result, new meeting grounds are created and alternative project formats contrived, such as installations, staged displays, performances and even theater shows. The book includes modern-day projects for well-known trademarks like Canal+, Mercedes, Renault, Zanussi, Smart, Camper, Nike, Issey Miyake and Bang & Olufsen, which were implemented by professional designers and other creative artists, such as Zaha Hadid, La Fura dels Baus, Robert Wilson, Tara, Droog Design, Konstantin Grcic, Mariscal, Ingo Maurer and Dani Freixes. ... Product Description
Unfortunately, French architecture normally dominates discussion (and works published on) Gothic architecture, missing some of the most beautiful buildings constructed in medieval Europe.Unlike the Gothic buildings in France and England, royalty or the church did not commonly fund Germanic architecture. It was a product of the towns, whose parish churches reflect the distinct style of the area- creating an almost incomprehensible richness of forms, types and decorative system not confined by a monarchy bent on self-representation, yet building of some of the same ideals of the better known examples of Gothic. Nussbaum looks at the period from a variety of perspectives, amethod far closer to the actual buildings themselves, the churches and halls that give each Germanic town its own distinct look and grandeur. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars LONDON CALLING
This is a very comprehensive guide to the varied architecture of London.London is, of course, one of the worlds great cities, and as such, it possesses some world class architecture.London architecture is not uniform and prefectly planned out out like, for instance, Paris, but it is interesting none the less.I love Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian architecture and London has this in abundance, sadly following the Blitz, London developers built hideous buildings, London got the worst of the so called "modern" architecture of the 50's and 60's.This guide is very well layed out and is easy to navigate. If you have any interest in this great city, then I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The all-inclusive guide to London architecture of all eras
This is a thorough treatment of London architecture, covering not only iconic landmarks like Buckingham Palace (although they're here too), but as well, buildings from all eras across Greater London. Post-WWII architecture is surprisingly well represented. The region is divided into a grid of 24 squares, each of which is illustrated with a detailed map (except outlying areas), and this grid is used for organizing the book into chapters. In all, over 900 buildings are included, each with a 2 inch x 2 inch photo and a description of three or four sentences. Floor plans are shown for each of Wren's churches and for a handful of other buildings.Appendices have maps showing 'The Great Estates,' London squares in chronological order, and 'The Inns of Court.' ... Product Description

The study of garden history has grown rapidly over the last twenty years. This collection of essays explores the issues, methods, and approaches that students in landscape architecture have developed during that period to cope with the expanding subject of gardens and their history. The volume will serve as a bench mark in the field, with its range of approaches and wealth of illustrative material.

Each contributor focuses upon a specific piece of his or her research, and uses this as a basis to discuss the wider implications of the study of gardens within such contexts as botanical, horticultural, agrarian, literary, technological, social, culture, political, and art history. The historical and geographical range is also deliberately large: from ancient Greek and Roman gardens, through Islamic and Mughal examples, to nineteenth-century English estates; from India to Surry County, Virginia, from Versailles to Philadelphia.

Certain themes come to dominate the volume: the values of archeology to garden history and conservation; the different or even rival uses of literature, painting, archival, and other documentation; geographical understanding of territory; above all, the rich resources of gardens for historical study and the importance of landscape architectural history in its own right as a major contributor to humanistic knowledge.

Product Description
Since its initial publication in 1993, A History of Russian Architecture has remained the most comprehensive study of the topic in English, a volume that defines the main components and sources for Russia’s architectural traditions in their historical context, from the early medieval period to the present. This edition includes a new Prologue and elegant photographic essay drawn from the author’s research and fieldwork over the past decade in remote areas of the Russian north and Siberia.

Subject to influences from east and west, Russian architecture’s distinctive approaches to building are documented in four parts of this definitive study: early medieval Rus up to the Mongol invasion in the mid-twelfth century; the revival of architecture in Novgorod and Muscovy from the fourteenth to the seventeenth centuries; Peter the Great’s cultural revolution, which extended through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; and the advent of modern, avant-garde, and monumental Soviet architecture. Beautifully illustrated and carefully researched, A History of Russian Architecture provides an invaluable cultural history that will be of interest to scholars and general audiences alike. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
I suppose I was set up for disappointment by the four 5-star reviews, so this is to balance those out - Actually, I'd give this a three and a half, mainly because I am used to books where at least the majority of the reproductions are in colour. This is the pitfall of buying unseen off the internet, and I think that disappointment for me is the main reaction for many art books purchased this way. In this volume, everthing is in black and white with the exception of five or six inserts each with maybe fifteen or twenty buildings featured in colour. That said, the text is readable, and from the little I know of Russian architecture, comprehensive. Just be aware of the pictures being mainly in black and white.

4-0 out of 5 stars FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
A wonderful book on a fascinating subject.Russian architecture is so varied, I really had no idea and this book is exhaustingly thorough.I especially enjoyed the section on Imperial Russian Architecture and the later Soviet Architecture. It is obvious how Speer influenced Soviet architecture, his Third Reich Berlin may have never been realized, but his spirit it is alive and well in Soviet buildings. If you have any interest in Russia or architecture or just well researched, scholarly books, then i cant imagine you being disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars RUSSIAN CATHEDRALS MAKE NOTRE DAME LOOK BORING,...
THIS BOOK IS PHAT. IT'S FAT TOO. IT'S A HUGE FAT BOOK FULL OF WONDERFUL COLOR AND B&W PHOTOS OF ALL KINDS OF CHURCHES, MONASTARIES, AND ALL THAT JAZZ. I'M STILL KIND OF INTIMIDATED BY IT THOUGH, JUST BECAUSE OF IT'S SIZE. I THINK IT'LL TAKE ME A COUPLE YEARS TO 'REALLY' GET THROUGH IT. MANY OF THE PICTURES, AT LEAST THE COLOR ONES, ARE FULL PAGE SIZED. THE PICTURE QUALITIES ARE VERY GOOD AND THE SUBJECT MATTER OF COURSE IS AWESOME. I LOVE HOW THESE ARCHITECTS WERE THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX. SOME OF THESE CHURCHES MAKE NOTRE DAME LOOK BORING.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book in English about Russian Architecture
Russian architecture is not well known to Western readers. Prof. Brumfieldis a prolific and systematical writer about Russian architecture. Reviewing book is the best modern book in English about a history ofRussian architecture. The book covers whole periods of a long history ofthe glorious Russian architecture. Author have visited Russia several timesand most of pictures made byauthor and that also makes his approach moreunique and personal. Text, pictures and references are very impressive andhigly professional. As a systematical desription of history of Russianarchitecture (data base) it is close to classical Grabar's work History ofRussian Culture (in Russian). The book creates a solid basement forbuilding a theoryof Russian architecture with discussionits origin, itsunique stylistic features and factors which influence the development ofRussian architecture. Prof. Brumfield's bookestablished a golden standardfor any other attempt to write a book about a history of Russianarchitecture (in Russian or in English). I have this book and I am treatingit as a my national treasure. Everybody who are interested in thearchitecture and/or Russian architecture must buy this excellent, beautiful, well written, highly informative and richly illustrated book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive review of a millenium of Russian Art & Arch.

Product Description

This IDC study examines the emerging approach to application design and deployment known as event-driven architecture (EDA). It describes the benefits of this approach in relation to conventional sequence-based programming, and proposes a more general model for EDA deployment than is commonly found. It also examines the role for integrated data as EDA is adopted for use in general business applications.

"Despite progress in hardware scalability due to the development of multicore processors, 64-bit addressing (for greatly increased main memory capacity), storage networks, clusters, and grid computing, software architectures have not kept pace, and application programs today, even those organized as service components for services-oriented architecture (SOA) deployment, have characteristics that inhibit their ability to take advantage of these hardware scalability developments," says Carl Olofson, research vice president for Information Management and Data Integration Software Research. "The benefits of EDA may be summarized as flexibility and efficiency, as well as ease of maintenance. The flexibility of this approach can, in fact unchain the enterprise from locked-in modes of operation, enabling it to exploit business opportunities that might otherwise be missed and establishing highly optimized business policies and procedures that would be impossible without the power of EDA." This compact (easily fits in backpack) guide has clear photographs of most every notable building, monument, and structure in Barcelona. Its main sections are divided by timespans, not geographically, but there's an index in the back that displays where each structure is located in the city. The book was essential for touring, to answer the "what was that?" question when some of Barcelona's incredible architecture presented itself. Each entry contains lots of detailed information, such as building name, address, year built, architects, builders, and sculptors, as well as a concise narrative on what is significant about this structure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Places and Spaces or Changes in Attitude Across Latitude
This book works very well as an introduction to vernacular architecture. It does, indeed, offer a leisurely stroll through the scholarship on vernacular architecture by demonstrating ways to read buildings in relation to American history. The approachworks very well as a way to train one's eye to look at buildings, and the focus provides good ways to connect the various elements of design to wider issues about social history and cultural change -- and continuity. It's also a beautiful book to read.I especially like the way that the photographs are integrated into the text. This type of layout takes a great deal of planning, and the illustrations really support and embellish the writing. There are numerous comparisons to show how American buildings are related to various styles in England, Ireland, Turkey, Bangladesh, and various and sundry places around the world. These comparisions are designed more to illuminate an understanding of American architectural forms and to show origins of various styles rather than to provide an in-depth understanding of global history. The overall method, however, can be applied to learning about buildings in any-place. ... Product Description

In American Architecture, Leland Roth introduces the reader to the major developments that shaped the American-built environment from before the arrival of the Europeans to the present, from ceremonial enclosures and homes to Modernism and its discontents. There is extensive historical coverage of 17th and 18th century architecture and regional styles. On both the high style architecture of aspiration and the everyday vernacular architecture, Roth presents the historical impact of changes in conceptual imagery, style, building technology, landscape design, and town planning theory. He charts the gradual development of towns, cities, and suburbs along with the social, cultural, and political forces that shaped their growth.“Buildings, like politics, are based on the fine art of compromise, and every building represents a judicious balance between the conflicting needs and aspirations of the client, architect, and builder. Americans, especially, it would seem, have been caught between divergent needs and desires, between the impulse, on the one hand, to build pragmatically and efficiently, and the wish, on the other hand, to realize a conceptual ideal,” writes Roth. These ten chapters provide a full, reliable, and up-to-date description, analysis, and interpretation of American buildings and their architects. The 612 illustrations— consisting of photographs, drawings, plans and maps— are integrated throughout the text. Well-written and comprehensive, Roth’s American Architecture is invaluable as a guide, a study, and a reference.
