Product Description
Originally constructed as landing stages for trippers by boat in the nineteenth century, piers later developed into attractions in themselves, with ornate pavilions, delicate ironwork and exotic lighting. Lynn F. Pearson, an architectural historian, outlines the fascinating history of pier and pavilion construction, using colour illustrations and photographs to show the development of these attractions from simple wooden structures to complex entertainment venues. This book explores the allure of seaside developments from the Victorian charm of Weston-super-Mare's grand pier to the seaside developments of the twenty-first century, such as Ilfracombe's Landmark Theatre, which continues to impress and entertain to this day. ... Product Description
From the 1950s to the 1970s, the work of Lloyd Wright, Gropius and van der Rohe strongly influenced a generation of young Australian architects, who adopted modernist principles in their work. In "Iconic Australian Houses: Three Decades of Domestic Architecture", Karen McCartney presents 15 significant examples of homes from this period, each designed by a different architect, that combine outstanding architectural principles and authentic interior decor.A detailed introduction places the period in social, historical and architectural context, before each of the selected homes is individually reviewed in an informed and engaging style. In each example the relationship between the architect and owner is discussed, as is the linking of the building to its site, materials and architectural detailing. The author has interviewed many architects and owners for their personal insights. Each study includes a feature on the interior decoration and a discussion of designers and manufacturers of iconic furniture, fittings and fabrics. "Iconic Australian Houses" features stunning photography, both panoramic and detailed, throughout. The homes from these three decades from a significant part of Australian architectural history and this book are a timely reminder of the need to preserve them as cultural artefacts. ... Product Description

How can design help to make PR events unique and compelling occasions? For the first time, Happening! Design for Events sets its sights on the total design of PR events and uses selected projects to show that there is virtually no limit to the influence and variety that are possible in this area. Exciting and innovative concepts from the designers provoke and potentiate the mix of artistic end in itself and economic persuasion that underlies PR events like product presentations, pop concerts, and cultural exhibitions.

The results not only convince potential customers they are a must for everyone involved in organizing big international events. Happening! surveys thirty projects by international companies and design firms including Nike Brand Design and 3deluxe and devotes eight pages to each, with photographs, drawings, and texts by prominent authors. Interviews with the designers close out the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars museumnights and more
Nederlandse tentoonstellingsontwerpers zullen hun vingers aflikken.

Description:
In this paper, we explored the functional properties of person recognition system by investigating the onset, magnitude, and scalp distribution of within- and cross-domain self-priming effects on event-related potentials (ERPs). Recognition of degraded pictures of famous people was enhanced by a prior exposure to the same person's face (within-domain self-priming) or name (cross-domain self-priming) as compared to those preceded by neutral or unrelated primes. The ERP results showed first that the amplitude of the N170 component to famous face targets was modulated by within- and cross-domain self-priming, suggesting not only that the N170 component can be affected by top-down influences but also that this top-down effect crosses domains. Second, similar to our behavioral data, later ERPs to famous faces showed larger ERP self-priming effects in the within-domain than in the cross-domain condition. In addition, the present data dissociated between two topographically and temporally overlapping priming-sensitive ERP components: the first one, with a strongly posterior distribution arising at an early onset, was modulated more by within-domain priming irrespective whether the repeated face was familiar or not. The second component, with a relatively uniform scalp distribution, was modulated by within- and cross-domain priming of familiar faces. Moreover, there was no evidence for ERP-induced modulations for unfamiliar face targets in the cross-domain condition. Together, our findings suggest that multiple neurocognitive events that are possibly mediated by distinct brain loci contribute to face priming effects. ... Read more

Book Description

During the Second World War, American architecture was in a state of crisis. The rationing of building materials and restrictions on nonmilitary construction continued the privations that the profession had endured during the Great Depression. At the same time, the dramatic events of the 1930s and 1940s led many architects to believe that their profession—and society itself—would undergo a profound shift once the war ended, with private commissions giving way to centrally planned projects. The magazine Architectural Forum coined the term “194X” to encapsulate this wartime vision of postwar architecture and urbanism.

In a major study of American architecture during World War II, Andrew M. Shanken focuses on the culture of anticipation that arose in this period, as out-of-work architects turned their energies from the built to the unbuilt, redefining themselves as planners and creating original designs to excite the public about postwar architecture. Shanken recasts the wartime era as a crucible for the intermingling of modernist architecture and consumer culture.

Challenging the pervasive idea that corporate capitalism corrupted the idealism of modernist architecture in the postwar era, 194X shows instead that architecture’s wartime partnership with corporate American was founded on shared anxieties and ideals. Business and architecture were brought together in innovative ways, as shown by Shanken’s persuasive reading of magazine advertisements for Revere Copper and Brass, U.S. Gypsum, General Electric, and other companies that prominently featured the work of leading progressive architects, including Louis I. Kahn, Eero Saarinen, and Walter Gropius.

Although the unexpected prosperity of the postwar era made the architecture of 194X obsolete before it could be built and led to its exclusion from the story of twentieth-century American architecture, Shanken makes clear that its anticipatory rhetoric and designs played a crucial role in the widespread acceptance

4-0 out of 5 stars Architecture, Planning, and Consumer Culture
A valuable addition to the growing body of work about the American home front during World War II.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nearly forgetten era
A fascinating look at how consumer culture embraced the idea of "planning" during World War II as the United States imagined life in 194x- the year the war would end. It was particularly interesting to read about how various prominent architects joined with building product manufacturers to produce written materials for distribution to ordinary Americans. In the end, planning was cast off by these same corporations near the end of the war once many of the entrenched manufacturers realized that modernization threatened their business models. Shanken also does a nice job of identifying a desire to return to pre-war and pre-depression normalcy, explaining why postwar housing was so conservatively designed. The book is a quick read and contains lots of illustrations from 1940s advertisements that are often highly amusing to today's reader. ... Read more

Product Description
The book, a documentary history, records a cognitive history of the emergence of modern architecture. Cutting across disciplinarian and institutional divisions, as we know them today, it reconstructs developments within the framework of a cognitive history of the past. Modern is here taken to mean the radical re-thinking of architecture from the end of the tenth century in Europe to the end of the eighteenth century. Among the key debates that mark the period are those that oppose tradition to innovation, canon to discovery, geometrical formality to natural picturesqueness, the functional to the hedonistic. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a spectacular collection of architectural doxa
Although I am an architect and profess the mysteries of my profession, I seldom review architecture books only because most are tedious and pretentious -- same thing, really. But here I will make an exception since this book IS an exception.

There can be no better review of this wonderful book than the Table of Contents itself: go check it out yourself: you'll see an amazing array of authors culled from the last 810 years spouting off their opinions about what they think makes for Architecture as an art. And that's what makes this book so terrific. After all, what a thing like 'Architecture' is, is defined not by its "essence" or "substance" but by how it is perceived to be; and by how people struggled, in its name, to make something worth looking at and talking about.

The author's 25+ pages of introduction is the best overview of the history of (Western) Architecture I've ever read. History in the best sense of the word: by registering all the major problems that affected, determined, and altered Architecture INTO its modernity. It is a feat in itself that he could pull something like that off.

Every original document is introduced by the authors in a paragrapgh or two, and then is allowed to speak as it once spoke when it was first published. Some of the problems that once thrilled and annoyed the best architectural minds may now come off seeming either quaint, incomprehensible, or even mysterious. But no matter how distant some of these problems may appear today, you can see for yourself two things: One, architects of the past entertained bigger ideas than architects do today; Two, that architects of the past did not suffer from the kind of disease of the soul that seems to be par for the course in posturing as an "avant-garde."

Highly recommended for all students of Architecture who, for want of maturity of architectural understanding, like to insist that the Bilbao Guggenheim, or the Berlin Jewish Museum is on par with say, the Duomo in Milano. ... Read more

Description:
While eco-balances and Material Flow Networks are common analysis tools of Environmental Management Information Systems (EMIS), discrete event simulation has not been used widely for this purpose. This paper argues in favour of combining discrete event simulation with material flow analysis to explore both the environmental and economic impact of business decisions. After a brief overview of core characteristics and benefits of discrete event simulation and material flow analysis using Material Flow Networks, a plug-in architecture for generating customized material flow simulators is presented. The benefits of this framework's component-based structure are then discussed in terms of its practical application to the lithography stage of the semiconductor manufacturing process. A summary of the framework's most significant characteristics and areas of application concludes the paper. ... Read more
