5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing information source
I can not believe this book is out of print. A few years ago I spent two weeks in Paris walking a large numbers of these tours. They are set to take the observer from one Metro stop to another through one or more neighborhoods. It is best for an architect or a serious traveller who enjoys looking at, and finding out information about, buildings. It is not a single source of information for the city or a general guidebook by any means. Another great pleasure while using this book is experiencing some of the lesser known areas of Paris that are off of the normal tourist routes. A great, great resource. Get a copy if you can find one.

4-0 out of 5 stars 7/12/99 Review Unfair; a quite useful book
The only other review at the time of this posting is rather unfair, probably because the author misunderstood the purpose of the book. It is a guide for walking the streets of Paris to look at buildings. It is not a coffee-table book. Hence the relative paucity of illustrations. Hence the use of actual French names for buildings and places. (How else would you find them? The signs are not in English. And the reviewer obviously found translation no problem.) And the maps are certainly adequate for finding your way. They show excellent small-scale detail. Perhaps the only "fault" of the book is that it is so compendious and the information so complete that it takes some study to plan your day. But at 446 pgs, it still fits neatly in a handbag or camera pack. The index is very good, and there are 20 blank pages at the back for your personal notes.

1-0 out of 5 stars needs much editing
There are 58 walks here, richly researched and presented with White's wonderful opinions. There are plenty of drawbacks, however. 1. You must speak pretty fluent French to read this book. White drops untranslated phrases in relentlessly. Even plain old buildings have to be called"Bureaux", "Logements", "Immeuble": WasWhite's editor as pedantic as White seems? One wonders why "Ambassadedes Emirats Arabes Unis" could not have been translated into"Embassy of the United Arab Emirates". Really.2. The maps areterrible: black and white Michelin maps with 1, 2 or 3 walks shown in greyon 1 map. The map numbering and site numbering system is very difficult tofollow. Some readers might like to backtrack from a location on amap toWhite's text but this is very difficult.3. Architecture books withoutphotographs are self defeating. The joy, or distaste, the author wishes toshare is best illuminated with visual imagery. White isdelightfullyopinionated but his book is scantily illustrated. ... Read more

Product Description

Making a well drawn design is not enough. Designers have to work with coalitions and alianties, time and process, ecology and economy. They have to be clever, with a broad vision. This new approach doesn t need to be boring. It can make fun. And be sexy.

Green metropolises: developing older cities and rural non-places into tasty green housing landscapes. Examples in Germany, Belgium and Algeria. The tradition of IBA, Olympic Games and World expo s: how exhibitions contribute to sustainable spatial quality. Acupuncture in London: a catalogue of ideas to renew old districts. The concept of Hollands Green Heart: how to revitalise an old planning concept. American artists vs Dutch engineers. Water as the engine of change. Essay: survey before plan, design as an exploration. The changing position of the architect. Portrait: Kees Christiaanse: urban designer in Holland and China. Christiaanse seems to play with urbanism, using informal rules as a design instrument.

23. The Literature of British Domestic Architecture 1715-1842

Editorial Review

Product Description
While few historians would dispute the importance of the printed book in the development of domestic design in 18th- and 19th-century Britain, this is the first major study to trace the evolution of architectural ideas during the period by examining the literary output of architects. It is a work of extraordinary scholarship, based on an extensive search of dozens of major library collections, that will serve as a standard resource for researchers and librarians, book dealers and collectors. Most of the book is devoted to descriptions of hundreds of books and periodicals containing original designs for domestic structures. The earliest title described is Colen Campbell's Vitruvius Britannicus (1715), an important Palladian manifesto and the first book to illustrate a series of the author's own executed designs for dwellings, intended to redirect and reform British architectural taste, and the latest title is Supplement (1842) to John Claudius Loudon's Encyclopedia. Related materials on agriculture, landscape design, drawing, and perspective also are covered. Each entry includes a bibliographic description of all known editions and a commentary that describes and analyzes the text and plates, focusing in particular on the author's ideas and approaches to design issues.Appendixes to the principal entries provide a checklist of additional handbooks and manuals by important authors such as Crunden, Halfpenny, Langley, Nicholson, Pain, Richardson, Salmon, and Swan, and books showing domestic interiors. There is also a valuable short-title chronological list, and a list of printers, publishers, and booksellers. In a lengthy introductory essay, Archer discusses architecture and the book trade, the format and content of the books, and aspects of architectural theory and design-including ideas of "character" and "retirement," dwelling types such as villas, cottages, and row houses, model housing for laborers, and town and village planning.John Archer is Associate Professor in the Humanities Program at the University of Minnesota. ... Product Description
Why are libraries such desirable commissions for contemporary architects and the frequent source of inspiration for artists and writers through the ages? LOGOTOPIA - the ancient Greek for word place - explores the library through architecture, art, and literature. With an astonishing multidisciplinary approach, these original writings examine both ancient and contemporary libraries - notably Egypt's Biblioteca Alexandria and Japan's Library of a Poet - as well as libraries of the imagination as seen through fiction, art, new media and pop culture. Punctuated with interviews and essays, LOGOTOPIA explores the library as a concept and a built form through four distinct forms: the Universal Library, the National Library, the Public Library and the Private Library. Discussions range from ancient Alexandria to modern Baghdad and from personal experiences to national identities. This original collection is richly illustrated with photographs, sculptures, models and installations from the past, present and perhaps the future. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Much Architecture
If you're interested in Mr. Hellman's politically correct judgments on civilizations throughout time, with occassional comments on their architecture, this is the book for you. You might want to have a book on architecture handy to explain terms he uses, but doesn't explain, such as flying butress and ribbed vault.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comic-style history of architecture full of humour
What a pleasure to read this book; it is witty and now and then mordant.
It explains the changing styles of buildings on the basis of the societies, their technical abilities, and their power structure, as well as the self-importance of rulers and architects.
All pages are approximately half text and half comic drawings, often with a touch of sarcasm.
Enjoy it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Capital!
If, like me, you've ever wandered around thinking, ah yes, interesting column, from the ionoricesque ahem period, yes, indeed - but wished you actually KNEW what period or style you were looking at - this is absolutely the book for you.A wealth of information, both historical and structural, about architecture and architects.I found this book easy to read, informative and entertaining, thanks to a host of tiny cartoons which slip you information without you quite noticing it, like hiding cauliflower in macaroni and cheese.

A very worthwhile book. ... Read more
