5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
Unlike many gardening/landscaping books, this one has *specifics* about different projects, i. e., terracing hillsides, building paths, etc.Much information not found in other books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative but Blurred
I agree with the other reviewers that this book is very informative and helpful. However, if you also like gorgeous garden photos you're bound to be somewhat disappointed. There are lots of photos, but they aren't insharp focus. Sometimes only one flower or a portion of a background picketfence is all that is sharply focussed. I understand blurring to accent aparticular flower, but that is not what has been done here. It's more likethe shots of middle-aged movie stars where close-ups are in soft-focus tosoften their aging. Ridiculous there, very annoying in a book where youexpect the photos to be outstanding. Still they show nice composition andgroupings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!

Product Description

In response to demand from landscape architects and home gardeners, Natural Landscaping returns to print in an updated and expanded second edition. It is unique in its focus on plant communities; it approaches landscape design as the establishment of natural ecosystems, rather than mere planting of specimens. Emphasizing the natural landscapes of the northeastern United States and eastern Canada, this book
o reviews landscaping principles and techniques
o introduces native plant species for grasslands, forests, edge areas, and small wetlands
o illustrates how to evaluate a site and plan for visual effect and maintenance
o presents the issues involved in restoring bogs, ponds, and other wetlands
o offers practical advice on reducing chemical use while still combating invasive plants
o addresses social, legal, design, and planting problems often encountered on residential sites
o discusses natural landscaping for public parklands, civic buildings, school grounds, and corporate properties

1-0 out of 5 stars Dogs Eye View Of Your Prairie
Ever increasing my backyard prairie I was really looking forward to this book. Designing and using structure to create an "English Garden" of prairie plants rather than just scattering some seed. Good Idea! A prairie related book that is on a different topic than every other prairie book? Bring It On! Everything sounded cool up-front.

Inside the book, however, is page after page of black and white photographs. It's not fun. It's not exciting. I don't want my yard to look like that. Wildflowers are enjoyed for their color and great variety, to see them in black and white is a complete bummer. Flipping through this book is completely unappetizing. For me, the words and authority of the authors become completely lost. Much like a medical school textbook from 50 years ago, there are some color photographs in the center of the book. Printed on heavier page stock and with the description of each subject written in numerical order in the margin, the color photos are an unappealing interruption.

I'm surprised the University of Wisconsin published this book this way. Why would they choose to cut corners on a subject of which they have such a proud history? They have so many other great books on prairie matters.

I found this a $25 disappointment. I'd be happy to give it away.

A more appropriate title would be "Natural Landscaping: As Seen By Your Dog".

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential resource
Natural Landscaping is an essential resource for anyone interested in landscaping with native plants. The importance of learning to use native plants is so importantas we face continuing droughts in various parts of the country, including here in Williamsburg, VA.The book is so full of information that I find myself going back to it often. Many thanks to the authors for this fine volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cogent, authoritative advice on how to restore wetlands
Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Natural Landscaping: Designing With Native Plant Communities by licensed architect and landscaping authority John Diekelmann and natural plan restoration expert Robert Schuster is a fascinating, "user friendly" instructional guide on basic landscaping principles, as well as cogent, authoritative advice on how to restore wetlands and introduce native plant species for wetlands, grasslands, forests, and more. Black-and-white photographs as well as an inset section of color plates wonderfully illustrate this meticulous, fact-filled, professional quality, highly recommended "how-to" guide for anyone aspiring to enhance or restore native plant communities.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful resource
I have the 1982 edition of this book - I stumbled across it and have been amazed ever since that such a book was written in 1982 before this approach to gardening/landscaping was popular.
It is tailored to the midwest, but the technical solidity and sound design concepts should apply anywhere. ... Read more

Product Description
Developing your landscape is one of the pleasures of owning a home. It's an opportunity to surround yourself with beauty and provide for your comfort and convenience. In a well-designed yard, kids have room to play and adults have an attractive area in which to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Your guests find a safe, welcoming path to the front door, and you don't have to struggle to bring in the groceries and take out the trash.

TAYLOR'S MASTER GUIDE TO LANDSCAPING is a stunning and useful book on a subject that even experienced gardeners find intimidating. It is essential reading if you plan to do all or most of your own landscaping work, but it's equally important if you intend to hire the work out. Buchanan's description of what to expect from landscape and gardening professionals is an eye-opener that will save a lot of disappointment and a great many dollars.

In TAYLOR'S MASTER GUIDE TO LANDSCAPING, you will learn how to
- choose plants that will thrive in your climate and growing conditions
- avoid common mistakes with foundation plantings
- plan and plant for future growth
- create an outdoor living room
- design and build walks, paths, and steps
- create privacy with fences, walls, and hedges.

Separate chapters explain how to care for landscape plants -- trees, shrubs, vines, lawns, groundcovers, and perennials. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Taylor's Master Guide to Landscaping
A great guide for those of us wanting to learn more about landscaping. It is plainly written so that anyone who wishes to start a new landscaping project will not feel overwhelming but empowered to tackle the job!

5-0 out of 5 stars A big help.
This book has helped me come up with a plan for the rough land that I have purchased with my new home.

5-0 out of 5 stars It wont replace the landscape architect, but it comes close
This is the most often used book I continually return to for landscaping reference and guidance. It's well written and will have you on the way to improving your landscape after the first read. One reviewer mentions Rita is opinionated. This is true. So you'll have to read around some of the opinions and decide for yourself what holds true for your property.

If you need just one landscaping book, I would highly recommend this book. It has a great balance of ideas, pics, & text. It is well structured and organized.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive text on planning a garden
I admire Rita Buchanan's style.

In a time of the pre-digested, summarized 'Idiot's Guides', she addresses landscape design in a methodical and logical progression. The text doesn't get bogged down in species' names and planting plans, but instead opens our minds to the larger questions of overall goals and needs. As such, I have found this to be the perfect companion as I plan my garden, opening my mind to the wider possibilities that I hadn't considered.

Having said that, you might be disappointed if you are looking for a book to 'dip into' for rapid solutions.I have found this book more rewarding if you have 30 minutes to spare with a comfy chair and cup of coffee, rather than just a 3 minute break.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and well designed; sometimes too opinionated
The book is what its title says and that's good - a master guide to landscaping. While I respect Ms. Buchanan's opinions on matters of landscaping since she obviously is versed enough to complete this well done andcomprehensive book, it seems to me that her opinions sometimes get in the way of common, useful, tried and true landscaping practices.Example: On page 229 she adamantly states, "...Disregard anyone who tells you to set hedge plants in a zigzag pattern...", yet the picture above depicts just that and, quite frankly, it's commonly recommended to do so.As a designer, I do use that technique for hedge planting because it creates a billowy effect and it's more visually interesting, in many instances. The point is, that statement is an opinion that may not be based on anything more than personal taste.

Having said that, it's an excellent and in-depth guide to the extensive field of landscaping and a very good book just to see what her educated opinions might be.Keep an open mind and refer also to other more task-specific books and expertise when faced with landscape challenges. This book certainly will entertain one with its views, many of them interesting and useful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Easly the best of the books I bought
I bought 3 different well reviewed "stone" books and this one was easily the best of those.Lots of well taken pictures of genuinely _different_ styles and types of stone patios and walkways. The other books are shorter and have fewer good pictures. Also this book was best at describing the pros and cons of different types of stone and stone building.None of these books explain _exactly_ how to build stone patios and walls and pathways by yourself but this one has more detail than most out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
A lovely book.
Very practical Ideas on how to landscape with stone. Only drawback I found was that almost all illustrations expect you to have a large space to be working with. Delivery to Kenya was as expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Revolution in Play
"Designing Outdoor Environments for Children" is a thorough investigation of how spaces for children aid in the development of necessary motor skills, intellectual and imaginative stimulation, and an early exposure to nature that will foster lifelong appreciation. No topic is untouched - history, design process, sustainability, case studies, and fundraising are all included. Not only is the text written in a clear, concise manner with many insightful images, but the text also provides the seeds with which a revolution in children's play will occur, hopefully soon. Designers, parents, principals, and teachers should all read, and will undoubtedly benefit from the unique concepts presented here. The environments for our children can become more inspirational, more nurturing, and should be made over; the authors tell you why and show you how.

Product Description
It is Dieter Kienast's way to look at the traditional concepts of nature critically. In 1998 he wrote " a habitable town needs nature yet this cannot be limited to aconcentration of vegetation" and so his landscape architecture gives expression to the fundamental relationship which exists between man and nature.Whereas the first volume looked at the private gardens designed by Kienast, this volume presents the public spaces created by Kienast, revealing how he dealt withthe considerably more complex task of integrating the most diverse requirements of many people. This volume presents examples from Germany and Switzerland featuring in particular residential superstructures, industrial grounds, museums and hospitals. Amongst his most acclaimed projects are the Swisscom grounds in Worblaufen, the Swiss Rckversicherung in Zurich, the Federal industrial tribunal in Erfurt and the psychiatric clinic Waldhaus in Chur.Contributions by Arthur Ruegg, Udo Weilacher, Eric de Jong et al., With photographs by Christian Vogt. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Wondrous Landscapes of DIeter Kienast
This book reveals an extraordinary body of landscape architectural work that is at least notably accomplished and, at its best, reflects a comprehensive expression and thorough understanding of the forces and elements that celebrate the confluence of nature and man. It is what Konrad Osterwalder -who selected Kienast as the "founder figure" of the landscape architecture program at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology- acknowledges as the act of entering into nature while retaining an awareness of cultural perceptions.

Kienast's work is reflective of a marvelous simplicity of which Mies would be proud, and his use of materials -especially plants- manifests a managed and thoughtful approach, almost tender and certainly romantic.
