The editors and authors make clear that diverse populations of students experience college differently and encounter group-specific barriers to success. Informed by relevant theories, each chapter focuses on a different population for whom research confirms that engagement and connectivity to the college experience are problematic, including: low-income students, racial/ethnic minorities, students with disabilities, LGBT students, and several others. The forward-thinking practical ideas offered throughout the book are based on the 41 contributors’ more than 540 cumulative years of full-time work experience in various capacities at two-year and four-year institutions of higher education. Faculty and administrators will undoubtedly find this book complete with fresh strategies to reverse problematic engagement trends among various college student populations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Help for Teachers
As a teacher of Special Education, when I found this book, I knew I had found something great. I found it to be a great help in understand IQ scores, parts of IQ scores, and disabilities. There were very specific ideas to help students in your classroom with various disabilities. There was a great section for parents and helping parents learn to accept their child's abilities and disabilities. I bought this book for myself and later lent it out, I never had it returned. I talked my school into ordering one for every Special Ed teacher in our school. All of us have found this to be an excellent reference. ... Read more

This is a very carefully researched book and it is reflected in the balanced and thorough text. The photos, however, are the reason I give it "5 Stars". They are not just "nicely shot" - theyactually give you the feel of the place (I've been to a few of the Missionswritten about). It is an exicitng book - inspirational. Product Description

Bob Wortman is a talented elementary school principal who writes with conviction and humor of his goals, vision, and strategies as a principal in this book directed at all who are interested in school revitalization--classroom teachers, site and district administrators, parents, policymakers, and funders.

As he explains the ways in which he strives to create a schoolwide learning community that includes everyone--students, teachers, family members, support personnel, and the neighborhood beyond the school doors--you'll be treated to the rich possibilities of vital public school learning.

The book opens with a description of the "Day in the Life of a Principal." While Bob explains it's impossible to capture the wide spectrum of activities, interactions, and surprises a principal encounters, he shows that fostering a successful school community demands not only a vision and philosophy but a practical sense that includes:

  • understanding how people learn;
  • making effective use of time and organization;
  • knowing how to maintain positive relationships with all members of the school community--parents, students, and teachers.

In this fascinating, personal account of how a principal can make a difference in the lives of all he touches through his work, Bob describes specific strategies for creating a positive learning environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and can focus on the business of learning.

Product Description

Arizona was born in a log cabin her papa built. She grew into a tall girl who liked to sing, square-dance, and -- most of all -- read and dream of the faraway places she would visit one day.

Arizona never did make it to those places. Instead she became a teacher, helping generations of children in the one-room schoolhouse which she herself had attended. Gloria Houston's Joyous recounting of her great-aunt Arizona's quiet yet meaningful life reminds us of the magical place a special teacher can hold in our hearts.

It is a childrens book with beautiful illustration and a tribute to all teachers. If you
love a teacher it would make a wonderful gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Great Aunt Arizona

Several years ago, I first read this book to my second grade class, for the purpose of focusing on illustrations.I never anticipated this book would have meant so much to my students and to myself as a long-time educator.I have given this book many times as gifts for:young teachers entering the profession, fellow teachers who have re-located, and lately to colleagues who are retiring.It's a perfect gift!

5-0 out of 5 stars A BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE TO TEACHERS EVERYWHERE
My Great Aunt Arizona by Gloria Houston, and illustrated by Susan Condie Lamb is a true tribute to teachers everywhere. I have seldom been touched by a book for young men and women as much as this one. The story is simple, but it is one of the most sincere works that I have seen for some time now.

The author's Great Aunt, Arizona Houston Hughes was born on Henson Creek in the Blue Ridge Mountains. She attended a one room school house and from the very start, dreamed of visiting far away places and seeing wonderful sights. The story follows the little girl, Arizona, as she grows from a young girl to a woman, a wife, mother and teacher. Yes there were hardships, obstacles placed in front of her, but her obvious determined spirit prevailed. Through sheer stubbornness and will, Arizona does indeed receive her teaching certificate and begins her life long teaching career teaching in the little one room schoolhouse where she herself attended.

The story follows the author's aunt through marriage, the birth of her child and her final retirement from a profession in which she excelled. Mrs. Arizona Houston Hughes ended teaching several generations of fourth grade students and having a great impact on their lives. She lived to the age of 93.

This is a well written work. The author's low keyed, yet precise and poetic prose is almost hypnotic at times. You feel and see what the young teachers feels and sees; through her eyes and the eyes of those around her and knew her. Her wish to see far away places was never actually fulfilled literally, but was fulfilled through the wonderful gift of knowledge, curiosity and wonder that she was able to passes on to her many students.

The illustrations in this small work are wonderful and perfectly executed. Each frame fits the story line perfectly. This team of Houston and Lamb is a winner by any standard. The background, dress, details and feeling of the Blue Ridge Mountains are captured perfectly.

As a side note; I have read this same story to the same group of third graders four times now. After this lat reading I had three little girls come up after class and inform me that they wanted to be teachers just like the "lady in the book." I have to admit that I got a bit choked up over that.

This is a wonderful read for children, either on their own, or as a group read. It is a strong, strong tribute to teachers, those in a profession which I personally feel is one of the most important we have. Not only should teachers read this one, but all those that are interested in their child's education and it is a good reminder to all of us that one person can indeed make a tremendous difference in many, many lives.

My Great Aunt Arizona is a beautifully-written, beautifully-illustrated book based on a real person, the author's great aunt Arizona.We loved the book so much we took a family vacation some years ago to see the area.The artist obviously went there and saw Henson Creek and the real places, just as we did.We saw Great Aunt Arizona's grave site, too, and met the author's mother.

We love this book so much we have donated it to a couple of libraries and given it as gifts many times.Top notch!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Guide to Mentoring Adults
Norman Cohen provides in Mentoring Adult Learners an excellent resource for mentors and coordinators of mentoring programs for adults.He organizes the book around six "behavioral functions" of mentoring -- a helpful focus in my view for those who would like to see their mentoring efforts have significant influence on those being mentored.Cohen effectively synthesizes the research on mentoring from the fields of education and business with awareness of adults as learners and principles of interpersonal communiction. Numerous examples and practical suggestions put flesh and blood on the solid research upon which the book rests. Cohen writes with a fluid, easy-to-understand style.

One-fourth of the book contains four appendices, two of which provide alternative forms of Cohen's Principles for Adult Mentoring Scale -- one for education and the other for business and government settings.The scale is for mentor self-assessment, and Cohen encourages use of the instrument for research on mentoring.

Other aids for the reader include a strong reference list and a helpful name and subject index.Discovery of several distracting (and at times misleading) editorial/typographical errors was disappointing, yet not enough to diminish my appreciation for this superb book.

Product Description
How often are the perspectives of Puerto Rican students recognized, listened to, and taken into pedagogical account? Not very often, according to this incisive study which deals with the struggles that these students confront in U.S. schools. Puerto Rican students struggle to make sense out of and fashion a voice from the multiple and often contradictory realities that comprise their daily existence. This book challenges generally accepted perspectives and practices among teachers and calls for new pedagogies that respond to the complex needs of these students. ... Read more

Product Description
This monograph is focused on educating faculty and administrators about the developmental issues faced by students from different racial, ethnic, or other social groupings as they attempt to define themselves during the college years and the ways this information can enhance campus classrooms, programs, and policies. Although there is a growing body of work on how various racial, ethnic, gender and other social groups develop their identity, there has been limited synthesis or application of this literature to the practice of professionals in higher education. The authors have higher education administrative backgrounds, so their recommendations are grounded in experience, and each also has a solid record of scholarship in identity development. The combined scholarly and administrative experience of the three authors enhances the contribution of this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars complex indeed
The book is an acknowledgment of the complex makeup of the university population in the United States. Both at the student and faculty levels. Much of the discussion here revolves around the issue of race; a tricky and emotive topic on many campuses. Ethnicity also comes in, when concerning latinos, native Americans and asian Americans.

There is a lot of jargon about things like social oppression matrix, identity theory, and multiple identity development. It is easy to see how this might all be satirised. But if you can put aside a quick inclination to do so, much of the narrative may make sense, as a reflection of the nation's history and the diverse nature of the universities. The book is meant to develop an awareness in the reader, and a sensitivity towards the socialising environment on a campus. ... Read more
