3-0 out of 5 stars Privileged Sylvia Carfax had been helped by others all her life and now found that she had to come to the aid of others.
Great entertainment. The story hooked me from the first page when Sylvia Carfax arrived by train at Arrowhead Bend, Arizona, to meet Neil Grantham who owned the Blue Circle ranch. Grantham, who was besotted with her, had lied about being a wealthy cattle baron to encourage her to leave her privileged lifestyle in New Orleans and live with him. She had fallen for Grantham when he saved her when her horse bolted in New Orleans where her father was a wealthy shipping magnate.
Sylvia was annoyed to find the Blue Circle ranch a bit of a `dump' and that she had been lied to. So when Carl Naylor saved her from the unwanted attentions of a saddle tramp her attentions switched to Naylor. Especially when she learned that Naylor owned the Lucky L ranch and the Lucky Chance saloon at Nathan's Cleft and had the wealth and influence that she had expected Grantham to have.
Sylvia ignored Neil's and his no nonsense mother's advice that Naylor was no good and visited Naylor alone at his saloon. Naylor took her into his private room, drugged her drink and tried to take advantage of her. Grantham and his right-hand man Fleeting Cloud came to her rescue, Fleeting Cloud throwing a knife into Naylor's gun hand. Naylor swore revenge and Sylvia Carfax found she had to act to save Neil and Fleeting Cloud from the plans Naylor had hatched to eliminate them.
Although the title of this book is `Arizona Law', this has nothing to do with Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday and the OK Corral gunfight despite the Black Horse Western cover illustration being taken from a still of James Garner and Jason Robards in John Sturges' version of the shootout in the movie `Hour of the Gun'.

1-0 out of 5 stars Author was asleep at the keyboard. Editors, too.
How did this edition TOTALLY omit any mention of Barringer Crater -- the largest surviving meteoric impact crater in the world, located just south of Hwy 40 between Flagstaff and Holbrook?Absolutely no reference on maps or in the text of the 4200 ft wide, 570 foot deep crater caused by the impact of a giant meteor 50,000 years ago -- one of the world's greatest and most astonishing natural features, so much like the lunar surface that NASA used it for training grounds for their Apollo missions.
Such an omission is a major oversight.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic series for middle school state reports!
Wow, wow, wow. . .there is really a lot to know about Arizona.Did you know that the first inhabitants of Arizona arrived more than 12,000 years ago?It wasn't until 1250-1450 that the Navaho and Apache tribes arrived on the scene. There is a time line in this book that travels from the ice age right up to the time the Arizona Diamondbacks won the World Series and beyond. This marvelous book is jam-packed full of comprehensive, educational material.

The reader can find Geo-Facts, information about the topography, FAQs, a time line, mini-bios,"WOW Factors" (unusual tidbits), a travel guide, projects, resources and much more. The chapters include: 1) Land2) First People 3) Exploration and Settlement 4) Growth and Change 5) More Modern times 6) People 7) Government 8) Economy and 9) Travel Guide.

Any student wanting to complete a report on the states, or simply read about them, will want to take a look at this book and others in this Scholastic series. They are bright, busy, very eye-catching to say nothing of the wow factor in the information department. Do you know what the state fish is?If not, you can find this and a load of other interesting facts in this book! ... Read more

Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG-- The ring around the sun had thickened all day long, and the turquoise blue of the Arizona sky had filmed. Storms in the dry countries are infrequent, but heavy; and this surely meant storm. We had ridden since sun-up over broad mesas, down and out of deep canons, along the base of the mountain in the wildest parts of the territory. The cattle were winding leisurely toward the high country; the jack rabbits had disappeared; the quail lacked; we did not see a single antelope in the open. ... Read more

Excerpt: The University of Arizona Poetry Center is among the nations finest and most extensive collections of contemporary poetry. It is the largest such collection which is "open shelf." The University of Arizona Poetry Center was founded in 1960 by Ruth Stephan as a place "to maintain and cherish the spirit of poetry." The Poetry Center's mission is to promote poetic literacy and sustain, enrich and advance a diverse literary culture. Now an internationally renowned poetry library, the Poetry Center sponsors numerous programs, including readings, lectures, classes and workshops, writing residencies, writers-in-the-schools, writers-in-the-prisons, contests, exhibitions and online resources, including standards-based poetry curricula. An area of special emphasis within the College of Humanities, the Poetry Center is open and fully accessible to the public. In Fall 2007, the Poetry Center moved into a landmark building named for Tucson arts patron Dr. Helen S. Schaefer. The Poetry Center's new building, designed by Line and Space, LLC, makes the Center's entire collection of contemporary poetry fully accessible for the first time in decades. The 17,000-square-foot facility also provides beautifully designed meeting and gathering spaces for the Center's extensive literary programs and activi...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=8755569 ... Excerpt: Hamilton High School (Chandler, Arizona) -Hamilton High received the Chandler Education Foundation 100% Awareness status from 1998-2001, and was the only Arizona A+ school in 2005. Hamilton's faculty includes more instructors with master's degrees than any other public school in Arizona, and is recognized as an academic powerhouse. Hamilton is well-known throughout the state for its superiority in sports. Students are involved in numerous athletic activities, such as football, soccer, basketball, golf, lacrosse, hockey, softball, wrestling, tennis, badminton, swimming, and volleyball. Its traditional rival in the Chandler School District is Chandler High School, but competition is increasing with the city's second newest high school, Basha High School. The city of Chandler and Chandler Unified School District's rapid growth has contributed to the construction of a fourth high school in the district, Perry High School, which opened in 2007. Hamilton High School's football teams are perennially dominant: they won Arizona Division 5A State Championship for the 2003-2004, 20042005, 20062007, 20082009 and 2009-2010 school years, and also played in the title games in 2001 (vs Red Mountain) and 2005 (lost 15-14 vs Brophy). Hamilton defeated Mesa in the state 5A-I championship game 35-0 on December 12, 2009 to complete Hamiltons' first undefeated season.
