Product Description
Arizona's private schools are substantially less expensive to operate than their state-run counterparts, are better physically maintained, employ far more teachers per pupil, and place little emphasis on the academic histories of their applicants. Those are some of the conclusions that can be drawn from the 2005 Goldwater Institute Survey of Arizona Private Schools. This report examines the survey data and compares them to known characteristics of public schools at both the state and national levels. It then attempts to explain the pervasive differences between the two sectors.

Based on our survey data, we estimate that the real on-time graduation rate for our sample schools is roughly 84 percent and that the overwhelming majority of those graduates are admitted to college. Private estimates of the Arizona public school real on-time graduation rate vary between 68 and 70 percent.

When teachers' nine-month salaries are annualized to make them comparable to the 12-month salaries of most other fields, we find that Arizona non-government school teachers earn an average 12-month-equivalent salary of $36,456 in 2004, which is approximately $2,200 less than the average salary of media reporters and correspondents, for example. The 12-month-equivalent salary of the state's public school teachers was around $60,000 in 2004, which was more than the average salary of a nuclear technician, epidemiologist, or nurse.

Another striking difference between the sectors is the far greater emphasis private schools place on teaching versus non-teaching staff. If the public sector were to match private schools' emphasis on teaching, it would have to hire 25,000 new teachers and let go more than 21,000 non-teaching employees.

This report is divided into four parts: a summary of the survey's findings, an analysis of those results, a conclusion and interpretation section that attempts to explain them, and an analysis of the representative nature of our survey sample. ... Read more

Product Description
It was 1964. The job was to turn a dusty field into a top-ranking medical school. There were no buildings, no faculty, and no funds. Merlin K. DuVal accepted the challenge and won strong support as he began building the University of Arizona’s first College of Medicine.

Starting his adult life as a model in New York in the 1940s DuVal climbed his way up to being appointed Assistant Secretary of Health during Nixon’s administration and finally being instrumental in the founding of the University of Arizona’s medical school. While DuVal was a public man with a long list of accomplishments, this is also a deeply personal account in which a high-powered doctor discovers that his children grew up without really knowing him.

A year before his death, Dr. DuVal worked with journalist Linda Valdez to tell his story, and the real delight of this book is reading along as this man of remarkable intellectual curiosity examines his own life, his profession, and our society. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring -
'He had a sorcerer's name and the bearing of a prince' - thus Linda Valdez summarizes Merlin K. DuVal at the end of "A Doctor's Legacy." Dr. DuVal is best remembered as the founding Dean of the University of Arizona Medical School in Tucson; however, his other achievements are more than enough to place most others in awe. These include being a respected surgeon (specialty in pancreatic surgery), one of the first full-time faculty at the University of Oklahoma Medical School, Assistant Secretary of Health during part of the Nixon administration, President of the National Center for Health Education, V.P. for Medical Affairs - Good Samaritan Medical System (Phoenix), President of the Arizona State Retirement Board, and leading figure in bringing Medicaid to Arizona and preserving the Maricopa County Health System (Phoenix). Throughout all these posts Dr. DuValwas also an astute politician - always taking the time to determine how to best forward the interests of the various organizations he was associated with, at both the state and national level, as well as with the local physician community.

Inbetween meeting presidents and other famous individuals and leaders, Dr. DuVal also had time to meet with and help 'nobodies' like myself - I'd developed a computer system to evaluate hospital outcomes and needed the insight of an expert. During the approximately ten years I knew Dr. DuVal he never mentioned his illustrious background unless I asked. My most memorable moment with him was when I mistakenly mentioned having to push-start my car on the way out of his office - Dr. DuVal, then about age 70 and impeccably dressed, immediately arose and insisted on helping! Incredibly gracious, and an unforgettable lesson in humility for me.

Dr. DuVal could have had a much greater income in private practice - instead, Valdez tells how he was convinced to instead go into teaching. From there, it was a lifetime of also helping the poor, and ensuring that everyone was treated humanely and equally. (Dr. DuVal ended the 'Tuskegee experiment' immediately upon learning of it.) Readers are fortunate to have Linda Valdez' summary of his life in "A Doctor's Legacy."

Product Description
In 1994, Arizona lawmakers took the first steps toward parental choice in education through the open-enrollment and charter school laws. Later, lawmakers added reforms such as scholarship tax credits (1997 and 2006) and limited vouchers (2006). With 13 years of experience in school choice experiments, the time has come for Arizona to take stock of the past and make plans for the future. This paper examines the progress of the existing Arizona school choice programs and makes recommendations for their improvement and expansion.

Research from Harvard, UCLA, and other institutions has shown that Arizonas choice programs have improved public school performance and led to faster learning gains for students exercising choice.

Research also shows that choice programs are not plagued by some of the pitfalls critics feared. For instance, data show that parents are not motivated by segregationist impulses in choosing schools outside of their assigned public schools. Rather, parents choose schools with higher test scores.

Despite the promise of school choice, the pace of charter school openings has stalled in recent years, largely because of problems with the charter school authorization process. Allowing universities to authorize charter schools should help to expand the charter school market.

Likewise, Arizonas existing school choice programs are too small to create a widespread system of competition for students. Arizonas scholarship tax credit is limited, raising less revenue than would cover half of a single medium-sized school districts operating expenses. Enrollment growth in the public schools has far outpaced the creation of new parental options. Some abysmally performing Arizona districts, for example, have more students today than before the school choice implementation in 1994.

Parents and students have benefited from Arizonas positive, but limited, school choice programs. To fully enjoy the benefits of parental choice, lawmakers should create a personal use tax credit. Coupled with means-testing of the original scholarship credit, such a tax credit would create a universal system of school choice. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Believable and Exciting Historical Fiction
Several friends loved and recommended These Is My Words. I must admit that I put off reading it for so long because of its title. However, once I finally read it this summer, I really enjoyed the story of Sarah's pioneer experience. Her journey is delightful and romantic at the same time that it's dangerous and harrowing. Turner writes beautiful and creates a believable yet exciting story. Well done.

3-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read
This was an enjoyable read, although not a book I would likely pick up again to re-read.It starts a bit slow, but the pace picks up and keeps the reader intrigued.

The main character Sarah, shows strength and vulnerability which makes her very real. However, some of the exploits are out of an over-scripted Hollywood movie. The book cover describes the novel as a love story the likes of Rhett and Scarlet.Although the sexual tension is apparent in the story, Rhett is a more likable character.Sarah has greater moral conviction and personal fortitude than the over-indulged, narcissistic Scarlet.

Captain Jack Elliot, the main male character, pursues his own career goals at the expense of the safety of his wife and family. He is hardlypresent in their lives, and Sarah is left to deal with the terrors and hardships of frontier life on her own for the most part. When he finally decides to settle down and work closer to home he meets a very predictable end.

This was a monthly pick for my book club. Most of the members found the story fascinating.I was not as enthused, but I did enjoy the author's use of the diary format. It allowed the reader to see the maturation process of Sarah Prine as her literacy developed and her life unfolded.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
This book was chosen for my book club several months ago. I won't lie...I was NOT excited about reading this one. That being said...IT WAS AWESOME. This book was fresh, exciting, romantic, painfully sad and wonderfully written. The only negative thing that I have to say about the book was that the very beginning was difficult to read. The main charater is learning to write and her words are hard to read...but she learns quickly and her diary becomes much easier to read. I LOVED this book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars this book. was fantastic.
I love Historical Fiction - it's my favorite genre to read. I bought this book (along with another historical fiction piece, "The Vanishing Point"... I also reviewed that one) and eagerly dove right into the story after reading so many positive reviews.

This novel didn't disappoint. I loved the way the author wrote, the emotions she elicits with the scenery and situations. The protagonist of the novel, Sarah, is immediately likable and "real". I found myself reading this book nonstop in between work and life, and finishing it within a few days. I'm looking forward to purchasing and reading her follow-up novel, which continues Sarah's story.

Enjoy!

AIMS exams in several subjects must be passed by high school students in the state of Arizona as a prerequisite for graduation. This manual explains the Reading and Writing ExamÂ's test format and describes its two sections. The examÂ's opening section focuses on the six traits of writing, and its second section concentrates on the two main approaches to reading comprehension: reading as literary art and as a source of information. This book offers extensive practice and review for both sections, and concludes with two full-length practice tests with answers and explanations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, easy to read
There are many books about using a solution-focused approach for school counselors.Kottler used many practical examples to demonstrate how to focus on solutions, setting different types of goals when working with students. For examples, when using the miracle question, Kottler classified three types of miracle questions and gave clear examples how such miracle questions could be used.

I like this book because it is easy to understand and easy to read.It helps me a lot when working with adolescents and students by remembering Kottler's some examples. ... Read more

A blending of rich Mexican and American cultural traditions

"My name is Ramón Ernesto Ramírez, but everybody calls me Monchi. I live on a ranch that my great-grandfather built a long time ago when this land was still part of Mexico. That was before the United States bought it in 1854 and moved the line."

Every day, Monchi and his five brothers and sisters take a long, bumpy bus ride to Coyote School, where there are twelve students who each write for Coyote School News. Through their articles and drawings we learn all about their exciting 1938 school year-from the Christmas piñata, the new baseball team, and the Perfect Attendance Competition to La Fiesta de los Vaqueros, the biggest annual ranch celebration.

This eventful story, illustrated in full color, is based on an actual collection of newspapers written by students of Arizona ranch-country schools between 1932 and 1943.

5-0 out of 5 stars coyote school news
This is a wonderful book about kids who go to a one-room school in southern Arizona in 1938.There are twelve of them, most from Mexican-American families; a nice young teacher, Miss Byers; and her dog Chipito, who lives at the school with her. The school bus is a beat-up old car that bumps over dirt roads from one ranch to another picking up children and sometimes breaking down - and once running over a rattlesnake, whose 5'7" skin hangs on the schoolroom wall next to President Roosevelt's picture.
Monchi, a fourth grader, tells about the big events of the year, like Miss Byers' swell idea to start a newspaper, and the Halloween party and roundup on the ranch. And everyone writes stories or draws pictures for the "Coyote News" paper, which is printed in the book, so we can read about the nurse's visit andChristmas wishes and Miss Byers' radio and Loli's lost tooth and the school's float at La Fiesta de los Vaqueros in Tucson.
Joan Sandin weaves these events into an absorbing story that easily incorporates some Spanish words (a glossary is provided.) Her bright, detailed pictures tell even more about ranch and school life and about the twelve children of Coyote School. To look at their group picture on the last day of school and then back at their first-day picture is to see how well we have come to know each one, and how pleased we are at how they've grown.
This lively story should fascinate kids, who will discover that in spite of the unique setting and the long-ago time, Coyote School children aren't all that different from themselves. The range of the children's ages makes it a great book for family read-alouds.And it's just the kind of book a good teacher looks
for: it's full of information, but first of all,it's a good story. ... Read more
