It’s a shaky landing for George Hogglesberry as he begins his first day of school on a new planet. What if nobody likes him? What if his ears fall off at recess? What if he turns into a tomato during the fall play? He never had to worry about any of these things back on Frollop II. But with the help of his gentle new teacher and understanding classmates, George may find that even a boy from across the galaxy can feel at home on planet earth. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Whimsy
I read this book with a 5-year old starting school. George's story is very accessible, and the details of his life are so wonderfully and creatively silly, that both adult and child were sincerely giggling at every page.Chad Cameron's illustrations are artful and fanciful -- he has a profound visual sense of humor. This book would be wonderful for any kid, and especially those working through an adjustment to a new school (or home?) situation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for those teaching own children
I used this book as an introduction to how children learn math. I pretended I was a child and worked through the problems with manipulatives. I found my mental math faster, and my general appreciation of math increase. Any parent who wants a confidence boost before home- or afterschooling will find this book worthwhile.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learning Mathematics
This was a required text for me, but I have found the book to be very helpful. Aside from explaining mathematics in depth, the book contains many example problems adaptable for a clasroom, and reproducible pages in the back. Instead of selling this item I plan to keep and use it as a reference in my own classroom especially since the book contains alternative methods to teach concepts (i.e. lattice multiplication and pyramid division). This book references NCTM principles and standards but does not discuss them thoroughly. ... Read more

Product Description
The Sociology for a New Century series offers the best of current sociological thinking to today's students. The goal of the series is to prepare students, and in the long run, the informed public, for a world that has changed dramatically in the last three decades, and one that continues to astonish.

Each book in this series offers in some way a comparative , historical, transnational, or global perspective to help broaden students' vision. More than any other major institution, schooling and schools are political, and virtually everyone has opinions to voice and interests to promote. Steven Brint musters a wealth of comparative material to show how schooling around the world is shaped by social forces even as it tries to shape the societies of the future. Students, parents, and policymakers will all have a better understanding of the schools they attend, support, and fight about after reading this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Linear thinking leads to insubstantial analysis.
This book was highly disappointing and uninformed. Firstly, the author seems to have a thin grasp on current understandings of global development, as displayed in chapters 2 & 3 on education in 'industrialized' and 'developing' worlds.
The book displays inconsistencies in thinking, and many seeming uninformed statments in the chapters on inequality.
I do not recommend this book, except as a way to learn objectively about the topics in education, removing the actual content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for teachers (art and classroom)
This book has many positives. It really helps to set up each student by grade and ability. It is a wealth of information for a bargain price.I am an art teacher and purchased this to help with development of an art program.Even as a seasoned art teacher, I have used it almost every day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Art Teacher's Bible
Oh my! This book is essential for any Art teacher of elementary and middle school age children. The author takes you step-by-step on what you need to know to teach Art. I'm just starting out teaching Art at the elementary level and I know that this book is going to be well used. I should probably buy another to replace this one when I wear this one out. If you are teaching Art, you should have this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Guide
This book has been a great source of help and encouragement in my teaching in middle school art. It not only provides hundreds of project ideas but it has recommendations for age level appropriate activities. The first part of the book gives grade by grade suggestions for what those students can do at their age level, as well as, what each age group enjoys doing. It also offers suggestions for tools and materials that are best experienced or avoided with the different grade levels.
Under the different project ideas, the book offers many ways to incorporate other subject areas into the art lesson or, for those who teach other subject areas, to have art projects that enhance their subject matter.
I was encouraged by reading and recognizing areas in which I was right on target for the age level of my students. I also appreciated the constructive suggestions for new opportunites to give my students a better art experience. I can't recommend this book more highly !!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I had hoped
Yes I suppose this was mildly helpful but it is a big book and the ideas aren't great. You're better off asking a veteran teacher what you need to know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for teachers interested in enhancing their students' learning experience
Highly recommend for teachers - it offers a lot of ideas for creating projects that enhance learning while also helping students improve other critical skills such as communication, teamwork, research, presenting, etc..

Easy to read. Lots of great suggestions.

5-0 out of 5 stars On Target!
This book is excellent for use with our group of gifted students (3rd through 12th grades), as it provides the step-by-step strategies for teachers/facilitators to consider as we delve into 21st century real-world projects which connect with standards.Excellent service and product provided.

5-0 out of 5 stars If only I had this when I was teaching
I taught for ten years as a high school math teacher between 1990 and 2000. During that time, I was constantly trying to bring the 'real world' into my classroom by creating projects and problems that replicated reality and engaged my students with as much passion for the subject as possible. I often got plenty of passion, and lots of great mathematical reasoning. I often had the kids writing math papers so that they had to explain their reasoning in detail. However, I was frustrated when trying to teach them to prepare more thoroughly for their oral presentations, or to work more cooperatively and produce equal effort in their groups.

If only I had had this Handbook on Project Based Learning. There are very clear guidelines on how to take ideas for a project that you already have, or to create one from the curriculum you already teach, and to then map out a highly focused, thoroughly engaging, tightly managed, standards based project, including ideas for authentic assessment through artifacts which support the student's time and effort(phone logs of group communication, meeting notes, library research logs) as well as rubrics and forms for planning, managing and assessing the work throughout the project.

You will be amazed at the work that your students produce when you add only some of the ideas in this book.

The book is so rich with material that each year you can add a few more of the suggestions to your project until it is a dense, rich, powerful learning experience that your students will talk about and remember for years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Project Based Learning Handbook
The Project Based Learning Handbook is an essential tool for any educator looking to design more rigorous and relevant curriculum. Markham and associates take the educator step by step through the design process - explaining concepts, offering examples and encouraging the educator to apply their learning. The handbook serves the needs of both the novice and the more experienced teacher. The novice will devour each and every section while the veteran can hunt around to find resources, templates and high quality examples that they can adapt for their classroom. The PBL handbook is required reading for all new teachers to Envision Schools, a San Francisco Bay Area cluster of new, small, innovative high schools dedicated to implementing academically rigorous project-based learning. While the handbook is focused on PBL, the instructional design strategies are sound practices for every type of instruction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource for teachers
The Buck Institute's PBL Handbook is a great resource for any teacher who wishes to create a more meaningful educational experience for students.Very few teachers have had any experience or training in implementing content based projects and this guide provides step-by-step instructions in developing PBL units. The handbook is also full of examples and ideas that come from the classroom. We use the PBL Handbook extensively in training all of our incoming staff members.
