Product Description
Colors are key to the Chinese art of feng shui ("Fung Shway"), a system of placement whose simplicity and ecological good sense have struck such a chord recently in the West. Now Lin Yun and Sarah Rossbach, well known for their introduction to the West of feng shui, have written a fully illustrated guide to color application in all areas of life: home, garden, clothes, food, environment, health, and fortune-telling.In LIVING COLOR readers will find not only answers to the most common color questions—what color to pick for the new sofa? What color to wear on a job interview or to clinch an important deal? What colors for romance?—but also rules for a balanced and harmonious life based upon no less an authority than Tao—the way of all living things. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars VERY Helpful for "Western" Feng Shui
Having recently discovered Western Feng Shui, I've looked at/bought books on this topic. This book, Living Color, is easily understood, extremely helpful, and practical. The advice given allows one to apply color to one's home, office, etc. and enables the user to choose according to personal taste and preference.

1-0 out of 5 stars a book about color with few pictures!
I had high hopes for this book because the cover was so beautiful but I had a really difficult time getting through the concepts because there are almost no pictures!Color is something you need to see to get and after struggling through a couple chapters, I just threw it away.I would suggest the author add pictures on every single page to illustrate their points, until then, stay away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I purchased this book years ago and found it extremely interesting and informative, not to mention, easy to use. After having lost my copy, I decided to buy it again and am very glad I decided to do so.This book is a classic in the world of Feng Shui, and Master Lin Yun is a very wise and intelligent man.I highly recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too many lists
If this is your favorite book, I apologize for not giving it a well deserved 5 stars.I am writing for those who might share my perspective, and do not want to diminish the perfection of this book for many people.

This is only the third book on Feng Shui that I've read.My immediate interest was sparked by reading 'Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui' by Karen Kingston.Wanting to learn more and using my engineering research skills, I combed the reviews here and picked 'Living Color'.My color IQ is nil and I hoped the book might offer some assistance.

Unfortunately, I was too dense to make much of the insights offered. The various matrices of color vs. room or color vs. business or color foreground vs. color background went over my head.I'm already a habitual list/matrix maker, but they are memory aids for recalling 'known' insights. In this case, the original insight eluded me, so recalling it offered me little.

I did enjoy the first 3 chapters, which included preparatory material.Perhaps the book was simply too advanced for me.For example, the notion of a destructive and creative color cycle is very appealing; I just couldn't get a feel for it.

Near the end of the book, the use of color as part of meditation practice is described.I appreciated this section, too.

3-0 out of 5 stars helpful only to the intutive
I am someone who is deeply interested in and in agreement with the foundational principles behind what goes by the name of Feng Shui. And as much as I found this book helpful, I also tried to read it from the point of view of someone who might find the whole FS to be a bunch of BS. And I found it to be wanting in clearer explanations, even if only to explain why and how some of these things were beyond rational explanation.
This book IS about color theory and practice as espoused by the Black Hat Sect Tantric Buddhism (BTB) in organizing the environment - micro and macro. By now the interested reader ought to know something about the historical dimensions that shaped the BTB, especially including the Chinese input over the last 1,000 years or so. That said, I can say that this book is helpful only to those who are artistically inclined and/or familiar with, AND accepting of the logic behind Chinese cosmology and cultural symbolisms. Why?
Take for example, the part where the author mentions that the color white for fences is bad and red is best. She recommends a cure that can be had by tying 9 red ribbons to the fence. Okay, let us leave aside for the moment the issue of whether that is "true" or not, on whatever level. The fact that the author would make such a statement is bound to rub the average American reader the wrong way, which is indeed unfortunate.
The fact that the color white symbolizes death and purity (to the point of permitting no life) to the Chinese is no reason to write off the whole Western practice of investing the color white with other meanings, such as purity (as in chastity), honesty, cleanliness, and new beginning -- all hopeful and positive things.
This book, as good as it could be, makes the same mistake as some of the other bestsellers in assuming that every reader will (have to) simply accept the Chinese cosmology as universal truth. It is not clear why this oversight continues to occur, but it gives the uncomfortable impression that only a particular culture had access to the "real" truth of colors.
This sort of explanation right from the start would have been helpful to the reader: That the FIVE ELEMENTS merely represent the five MODES of Ch'i, and the names (that is, the elements) associated with them were chosen largely for easier memorization and visualization, and thus application to the visible material world, including medicine. They could just as well have been labeled A,B,C,D, and E. (The subatomic particles also have names that are there just for easier identification. Are electrons really electronic?) The names of the five modes don't really matter, but the manner of their interaction does. The reader should not accept the (pseudo) explanation that "metal 'produces' water because water condenses outside a copper pail filled with cold water", or that "fire 'produces' earth by way of ash". Nor should the reader reject it as "bad science" and forego the more interesting stuff behind the immensely complicated system of observation (as well as observances) in FS. The five elements structure is a mnemonic device before it is anything else but the author does not tell you this, and the disinterested reader is left to follow wide-eyed, marveling at the "awesome" wisdom of the Chinese; or to reject it without furthur ado as New Age mumbo-jumbo.

Given that the BTB puts a lot of emphasis on YI (intention, will), and even in its meditation practices it encourages people to activate whatever religious symbolisms with which they feel most at home, it would only makes sense to assure the Western reader that the purpose of Feng Shui is to activate the energy (Ch'i) of one's environment in harmony with one's own psychic disposition, which would certainly include one's own traditional orientation and inculcation of values -- ethical and aesthetical.

This book, I think, can confuse as well as enlighten, depending on the reader's own level of intutional development. Those who are too uncritically enthusiastic about FS so as to accept everything written here, may end up with a mess of colors all over their house. If it's true that 'You can take a horse to the water but you can't make him drink', then it's also true that if you're the horse, you have to figure out just how thirsty you are, and for what.

All in all, this is a good book, but if you are trained to think critically, it may not be the best book out there for you.... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any designer!
This is a great book for all kinds of artists. The presentation and content brings an international view of the use of color and color psychology. It makes you think twice about your color palettes, and with great results.

A must have.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Examples, but terrible print job... confusing at times
I am a student at the moment, majoring in Painting, and am very serious about color and learning the most I can... well.. I think that the book has great examples, talking about color theory that has been referenced in my color theory class, talking about stuff I have read in other books, basically, it is a great compilation of a lot of different approaches to color and their uses. The major problem I have, and maybe this is a little foolish, but there are colors in the book that are badly printed, particularly with the color blue. There are several examples of the color blue in the book, but it does not look like blue, at best, it is a purple with hints of blue (which is true for an additive color wheel anyways).I have looked at the book in many different lights, asked a couple different people and it is still the same..the labeled blue, and the examples of blue, are not blue, it is a weird deep purple. If this were anything but a color guide for designers, then I would have easily given this book 5 stars, but the fact stands, a color book should not be something that has bad misprints.

3-0 out of 5 stars Error on Page 10
I have had this book for a while, to look at the pictures.I chose to sit and read it this morning. On page 10, while the graphic is correct, there is an error in the description of Additive Mixing. The text reads"...red and blue light form cyan...green and blue light form magenta".It is a beautiful book, but that should have been caught in editing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book !!
Im a self taught graphic designer and part time freelancer and this book has been very insightfull though there is still much to learn from the world of color

soy un diseñador grafico por practica, no curse la universidad; en ocasiones trabajo como freelancer y este libro es muy interesante e intuitivo, claro que hay mucho que seguir aprendiendo del mundo del color

5-0 out of 5 stars Color Theory with Lots of Explained Examples
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3E1LNI0P3I5G7 This is actually more of a textbook than a workbook. But it's not a bad thing and you'll see why.

Foundation concepts for colors are explained. That's the RGB, CMYK and HSV models, color harmony and color meanings.

Chapter 4 is probably the workbook part although they don't exactly give out step by step lesson guides. Chapter 4 is on the 10 rules of colours that should be used for reference when choosing colours. There are however a few lists that describe workflows when creating a palette.

This book essentially teaches through examples and explaining the color concepts behind those examples. The explanation is very clear and that's where most of the learning is going to be. Finally, there are 16 case studies at the end of the book, with the designers talking about the use of colours in their project.

Colors is about experimentation. Every design is unique and has their own set of limitation.

A nice thing about this book is that it has lots of interesting quotes. Such as:

In order to use colour effectively it is necessary to recognize that colour deceives continually. - Josef Albers

In a physical sense, there really is no such thing as color, just light waves of different wavelengths.

Research reveals that all human beings make an unconscious judgment about a person, environment, or item within ninety seconds of initial viewing and that between 62 percent of that assessment is based on color alone. - The Institute of Color Research

This book is perfect for people who want to see examples of how people apply the color concepts to their work.

Here's the list of chapters:

1. What is Color? Apparent Color, The Properties of Color
2. Color Theory. History of Color Theory, Color Harmony
3. Color Meaning. Color Index
4. 10 Rules of Colors
4.1 Convey Information
4.2 Create Color Harmony
4.3 Attract and Hold Attention
4.4 Remember That Context is Everything
4.5 Consider That Experimentation Is Key
4.6 Know That People See Color Differently
4.7 Assist in Mnemonic Value
4.8 Think About Composition
4.9 Use Standardized Color Systems
4.10 Understand Limitations
5. Color Systems
5.1 Thinking About Color Systems
5.2 Color Systems in Art and Design History
5.3 Some Inspiration for a Sample of AdamsMorioko's Palettes

Product Description
The ultimate reference for knitters who are eager to bring richer, more complex color to their projects, including vital lessons on color theory as well as 25 inspiring garments.

In The Alchemy of Color Knitting, Gina Wilde, creative director of Alchemy Yarns of Transformation, unlocks the secrets of color theory for knitters. An acclaimed teacher on the topic of color and transformation, Gina is uniquely able to shed light on color theory as it applies to knitting–her knowledge is both authoritative and informed by an artist’s eye.

The Alchemy of Color Knitting begins with a concise, complete description of the fundamentals of color theory, outlining the basics of the color wheel and color relationships. Knitters can easily brush up on the essence of color theory–which colors are primary, secondary, and tertiary, for example–and the relationships among those colors. From complements and split complements to elegant arrangements of analogous hues, all color relationships are explained from a knitter’s point of view. Additionally, the central concepts of hue, value, and intensity are discussed–the subtle (and often not-so-subtle) shifts of color that can be used in a knitted garment to gorgeous effect.

What’s more, in The Alchemy of Color Knitting Gina delves deeply into the ideas of color and meaning. Choosing just the right color for a given project is a ritual for knitters that should be savored, but sometimes
is fraught with anxiety. Gina helps liberate knitters to think creatively in their color choices by considering a color’s origins, lore, and myriad meanings.

Inside, knitters will find 25 patterns for show-stopping garments that cover a variety of skill levels, from beginner to experienced. A brief“color exercise” description before each pattern explains which color relationships are illustrated in that particular garment. But make no mistake–with the lessons of The Alchemy of Color Knitting in hand, a knitter’s possibilities of color choice are truly endless. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful colors
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0307393550/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_img

This is a beautiful book with beautiful patterns. Lots of good ideas on the use of color in knitting

5-0 out of 5 stars So nice !
The content of this book is more pattern than the technique of mastering palettes ! But it is pretty nice!

4-0 out of 5 stars beautiful patterns
I thought the patterns in this book were very beautiful. The cover picture is a nice example. Did the book go in depth on color theory? Maybe not as much as the other reviewer would have liked but there is some. There are approximately 15 pages devoted to color theory and then a color lesson in each pattern as well. Perhaps the word alchemy is misleading to some because they do not realize that Alchemy is the company name of the author Gina Wilde's yarn brand. I only wish there were a larger size range on the patterns as some go up to a 48" bust whereas some stop at 42". The 25 designs were mostly beautiful and Alchemy yarns have a rich and saturated color palette. But the patterns seem very brand specific to me although there is a section in the end for substitutions. Beware that Alchemy yarns are high-end, gourmet (read expensive) yarns and not widely available.
Designs included shawls, wraps, gloves, socks, cardigans, pullovers, a skirt, a baby sweater, and some home decor.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
Ordered this book, hoping it would fulfill the title:The Alchemy of Color Knitting. The title is very misleading. It is not a book about how to use color.Of the 144 pages 11 pages are devoted to "color"the remaining pages are patterns of items I would never knit, much less wear. They are really "over the top".When I order a book about color or patterns or techniques, I expect the author to cover those subjects exclusively.Perhaps throw in a pattern or two. This is a book of patterns and very little about the use of color in our knitting.Learned absolutely nothing new, you can get this information from any color wheel...Save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mastering Exquisite Palettes
You can get so wrapped-up in the pictures and descriptions in "The Alchemy of Color in knitting" by Gina Wilde that you will forget you bought this to work with. The book itself of course is softer covered that it has those unique flaps on the front and the back that allow you to use them as bookmarks or placeholders. My copy is the beautiful fresh ink aroma of new books.

Some of the patterns are exotic however I bought this book to understand more about color and possibly work with some of the simpler shawls. Looking at the 100 page 43 named "Month of Sundays" that highlights lace and switch definitions by knitting a neutral and symbolic color. I'm thinking of replacing the mohair with silk so it will be less scratchy.

Gina Wilde is the co-owner of creative directions of alchemy yarns of transformation. She holds an MF a N. arts and consciousness and is an acclaimed teacher on the topic of color and transformation.

The book itself is published by Potter craft and you can get on the Potter craft free pattern newsletter at www.Potter craft.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
This book includes beautiful designs, I love Art Nouveau and I chosed this book because I am doing a ceramic course, I found in it great ideas to make plates and vases. The pictures are in color, and there is also a whole set of stencil designs.I am thinking to buy the Art nouveau animal patterns which belongs to the same book serie.Beautiful book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice artwork!
This book has great designs and some very pretty artwork, however I would not really call it a stencil book. There are only a few stencils in the back of the book and they are all in full color with printing on both sides of the page so there would be no way to use the stencils out of the book. You could photocopy them for use but there are only about 10 pages of real stencil designs the rest are front and back fairly intricate artwork that would be not good for stenciling, but they make great little pictures for frames, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST OVERALL Art Nouveau Floral Borders & Ornaments Collection Book for Artists
I have about two dozen books specifically purporting to be Art Nouveau 'collections', and NOT ONE, or even THREE COMBINED, come close to capturing what THIS book offers, albeit in the "floral" patterns category... To artists looking for a definitive 'starter' source, in the art of the period, for repurposing in art, crafts and decor (ie: wallpaper, fabric, pottery, woodcarving, etc.), pick up a copy of this book and forget the rest! I was able to find not only what I needed for several initial projects, but was inspired to START more new projects based on the sparkling ideas inspired by this plethora of lush color images. Only wished a CD-ROM was available to accompany this book with hi-res digital images, as it would have made importing images to my computer (for re-sizing, tiling, color changes, etc.) much easier than hand-scanning... Only my collection of (specifically) Alphonse Mucha art books surpasses the value of "Art Nouveau Floral Patterns & Stencil Designs", and that is only because I have not YET found a like compilation of M. P. Verneuil 'figure' designs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Verneuil
This book exceeded my hopes. It had many more images in full color than I expected for such a cheap book. I have seen other books by Verneuil and they were half as nice and mostly black and white. I think anyone into decorating, drawing, and painting will like this book. It will inspire you to create art nouveau lines and flowers on your own work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good designs
If you are into art nouveau, you will enjoy this Dover book. Again many variations on floral themes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Andy Warhol's colors
got this book for my 1 year old's birthday gift and he loves it!! colorful animals grab children's attention. I'm also a big Andy Warhol fan :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Just ok
I am a huge Andy Warhol fan, so I purchased this book for my 1 year old daughter, who loves books. The colors are fun, and the words are ok, but some of the pictures are a little hard for a young child to discern what they are supposed to be, and some of the colors are a little muted for someone who is just learning their colors.I would recommend "Pop Warhol's Top" instead of this one, if you're looking for a children's book with illustrations by your favorite artists.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for the older kids
this is a great book for pictures and such, more geared toward a middle to high school level

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute but...
I was somewhat dissapointed by this book. Sure - the illustrations are hip and fun but there should a lot more to a children's book that a rip-off illustrations from a famous artist and a couple of words spread out throughout the pages. The book should be measured by its total impact and not just by the color and sturdiness of its pages. To sum it up: the book seemed 'undercooked' to me - there are better children's 'art' book on the market. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Its simpler than expected
This is really only a table of color mixes.I had hoped for a bit more of a tutorial on mixing colors from the manufacturer of the very colors I use.The book only offers a matrix of color values based on a set of base mixes, and dissapointingly no black and white hues to those respective colors.I'm confident this book will have value to those looking for a color matrix, but I was admittedly dissapointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible design and unrealistic color!
The colors are not true to life and the design of the color wheels are not well thought out. Each page is for one base color and shows several other colors mixed in different strengths in a small color wheel. Finding the color you are looking for is for difficult.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent color mixing guide
I was a painting major in college, working in oils at least 6 hours a day, every day. I couldn't afford very many tubes of W&N back then, but they were, and still are, superior oils. Years later, I don't paint near enough anymore and I get too rusty on color mixing. Pigments have changed in 40 years too. So when I went looking for a new mixing guide (I used to make my own in college), I saw this one. It was backordered for months but Amazon came through in the end and found me a copy. There are color wheels for 25 of W&N popular colors that show the base color mixed in graduated percentages with other colors. When I start a painting project, rusty as hell, my palette is usually crazy with too many colors, the wrong colors and I end up with a lot of mud. This book helped me take my palette from 12 colors to 5 and the results are rich and vibrant. The short "how to use this book" and other narratives are well-written and actually interesting -- not so long and dull that you don't read them. Highly recommended for anyone who uses W&N oils, or any oils for that matter. It will help your juices flow.

1-0 out of 5 stars poor
This book has a minimal amount of info. Colors don't look true, and there is no information on permanance or transparency.

2-0 out of 5 stars Winsor & Newton Colour Mixing Guide
While there ae a few pieces of good information, the main thrust of the book is many pages showing the colors produced under various mixing conditions. This would be excellent if the color plates were done well and were accurate. However, the same color in two different places may be quite different. It does give you an idea of what will happen when two colors are mixed, but you really will have to do it yourself to determine if the resultant color is what you want. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great variety
This book is great for giving an all around idea of art deco textile, and art detail. However, I would have liked more information on the designers, years these were popular, the artists, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful And Inspiring
This is an excellent selection of colorful graphic patterns in the deco genre, and should be a useful and inspiring resource to designers, students, and afficianados.

5-0 out of 5 stars 127 Authentic Art Deco Designs
This book represents early Art Deco Designs, perhaps even late Art Nouveau Designs. The strikingly remarkable feature is the color combinations, which show the early flavor of the period. These designs were taken from twoportfolios of 1920's artists.

There is a full range of figures fromantalope and mountian lion to flowers and people. Some of which are highlyintricate and ornate, while others verge on the primative. As a sourcebook for a decorative artist (me), it gives subject and theme for anyperiod compositions which can be mounted.

The art is highly styled andornate, giving a fresh look to the Art Deco Period. ... Read more

Product Description

Josef Albers’s Interaction of Color is a masterwork in twentieth-century art education. Conceived as a handbook and teaching aid for artists, instructors, and students, this timeless book presents Albers’s unique ideas of color experimentation in a way that is valuable to specialists as well as to a larger audience.
Originally published by Yale University Press in 1963 as a limited silkscreen edition with 150 color plates, Interaction of Color first appeared in paperback in 1971, featuring ten representative color studies chosen by Albers. The paperback has remained in print ever since and is one of the most influential resources on color for countless readers.
This new paperback edition presents a significantly expanded selection of more than thirty color studies alongside Albers’s original unabridged text, demonstrating such principles as color relativity, intensity, and temperature; vibrating and vanishing boundaries; and the illusions of transparency and reversed grounds. Now available in a larger format and with enhanced production values, this expanded edition celebrates the unique authority of Albers’s contribution to color theory and brings the artist’s iconic study to an eager new generation of readers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, great price
I've actually had the privilege of seeing the real screen printed copy of this book and thought I'd buy this much smaller version online. Nothing, of course, is as good as the real thing but this book is still very interesting and has a ton of useful information if you're looking to understand color a little more in depth.

5-0 out of 5 stars the color king
This book is a delightful small version of Albers larger body of work. It is a great reference for those just starting color theory and for those who want a refresher. It is also a real mind bender and great way to stretch one's assumptions about color because of the exercises Albers sets up to show the reader/viewer that color truly is relative.

5-0 out of 5 stars a seminal study of color for artists and printers
This study will be of equal interest to scientists and artists. Although the author invites students to recreate his studies using colored paper scavenged from various sources, those interested in human vision and optical effects may learn much just by reading.Topics include:
visual memory
the relativity of color
light intensity, darkness
gradation studies
subtraction of color
color deception, after-image
transparence and space-illusion
the Bezold effect
color juxtaposition
film color and volume colorthe Weber-Fechner Law
tenerature and humidity in color
vibrating and vanishing boundaries,etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to practical color application
Josef Albers revolutionized how we approach the application of color in everything from fine art to architecture. In this book he walks you through lessons in theory and practical exercises he used to train students when he was teaching at Yale University. He gives well thought out examples and outlines exercises that can be used to fine tune your ability to see the more subtle nuances within the color spectrum and how important context affects our perceptions of color.

Most of the exercises use in the book require various shades and tints of colored paper. I found using the larger paint swatches found at the local hardware store worked quite well and best of all they're free. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have
If you are into comic book style coloring, or just wanting to better your skills as a graphic design artist in the coloring area. You must buy this book, actually the whole series. This is even used as a text book at some colleges that offer comic book coloring classes. I mean it's amazing!

4-0 out of 5 stars Really expands from the previous book
I bought this book from my local store, and being overly impressed with the previous book "Hi-Fi Color for Comics", I believed I got a good deal.

While Brian Miller briefly goes over the rendering and coloring techniques discussed in the previous book, it's still recommended that you read Hi-Fi Color for Comics first, because the theoretical processes like how colors are affected by light are not mentioned in this book.

This book takes what you would have learned in Hi-Fi Color for Comics and teaches you how to apply those processes to other popular styles of art. There's a DVD included with helpful video tutorials and useful brushes.

Be warned that this book absolutely requires you to have a copy of a recent version of Photoshop (CS or higher), I don't believe you will be able to carry out the exercises with Gimp or any cheaper alternative software. The only other downside I found was Brian supplies the lineart of the artwork for the exercises on the DVD, but before you can even start rendering, you have to spend days (or hours, depending on the complexity of the picture) going through a tedious process of lasso selecting areas and filling them with flat colors. It would have been nice if he included a fully flatted working PSD file for each exercise so when we were familiar with the flatting process we could skip to the rendering process (because putting flat colors in is pretty much the same technique all throughout the book).

Overall, I still think you should get this book (and the previous book) if you're stuck on how to color your work in Photoshop, or don't know how to approach it. If you want to learn new techniques for coloring using Photoshop, or to speed up your production, then this is also a good book to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Expands On Previous Hi-Fi Book
This is a great sequel to Hi-Fi Color for Comics which I felt was a very informative digital coloring manual. There is a section of this book which explains how to use the Flats Channel to another degree to help give your project a more "animation" type feel. Also this book goes into more detail in how to render a figure's overall appearance to show the subtlety needed to give your character a realistic finish.I highly recommend this addition of Hi-Fi's great advice and tips.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is definetly a 5 star book!!!
I ordered this last week after purchasing Brian's first book "Hi Fi Color for comics" and was extremely amazed. This book is a great addition to the first. The CD alone that comes with the book is priceless. It has diffrent Photoshop styles and templates to help any digital artist (not just comic book stlye)! I loved the project studies, and was blown away by all the diffrent art techniques. "Master Digital Color" shows you such a wide spectrum of ways to color from Disney animation to comic book to pin up. If you you color anything digitally this (and the Hi Fi color for comics) is a must have in your library!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Near Perfect Computer Coloring Manual
After I bought Brian and Kristy Miller's first book, Hi-Fi Color For Comics: Digital Techniques for Professional Results, and went through the lessons, I remember thinking, "They've just got to make another book - there's so much more to learn!" For those of us who felt that way, the Millers' follow-up, "Master Digital Color" is a dream come true. Building directly off of the lessons taught in "Hi-Fi," this book expands the techniques taught both in complexity and utility.

Before we begin, I must warn you - to use this book you need to have a version of Photoshop (preferably CS or higher) and some sort of Wacom-style tablet.

The Good: While "Hi-Fi Color for Comics" taught the rudiments of the "cut & brush/grad" coloring style in exceptional detail, "Master Digital Color" goes deeper, taking those lessons and applying them to different styles of art and new techniques. Here, you'll work on everything from animation (Disney, Hanna-Barbara and action/adventure cartoon styles) and manga style art to pin-up, sci-fi, and, of course, advanced superhero comic coloring techniques. Want to learn how to render hair or figure out how to make a face look right? This is the book for you. Want to figure out how to render metallic objects, stone, brick, skies, etc? Again, this is your book. And that just scratches the surface.

There are six chapters (Animation, Superhero, Pin-Up, Sci-Fi, Manga and Alternative), and each chapter has three complete lessons (taking you all the way from flatting the art to rendering, color holds and special effects) and two "Challenge" homework assignments where you take what you learned in the lessons and try them yourself without any help. All of the lessons and homework assignments are contained on the accompanying DVD-ROM, along with color pallets for each lesson, video tutorials, "Hi-Fi Helpers" and Photoshop presets. While this DVD-ROM includes much of the content included on the disc that accompanied "Hi-Fi," you will still need to install this new disc because it also includes new material vital to the lessons. Installation, thankfully, is quick and easy.

The Photoshop Presets, like those in "Hi-Fi," include custom brushes, color settings, and automated actions and scripts to minimize the number of steps you have to go through to set up your files for each step in the coloring process. This is a major aid - though it would be nice if they told us all of the steps for file set-up just so we could try them out for ourselves.

The Bad: Not much, but there are a few little things. While there are a host of amazing techniques taught in this book, one that is not really covered is how to render musculature - while you will render colors over muscles in the lessons, there isn't any in-depth discussion (you'll need GURU-eFX's now out-of-print How To Color For Comics for that). Something else I would have liked to have seen is how to determine which "screen" color (the color you'll use to render and create highlights) you should use in your own art; there is little discussion of choosing colors, which you'd think would be essential. Also, I noticed some typos and editing errors in the book.

Now, the big question: If I buy this book, do I still need to buy the first one, Hi-Fi Color For Comics: Digital Techniques for Professional Results? I would say yes. "Hi-Fi" teaches the rudiments in great detail and, if you've never even flatted a page before or have little Photoshop experience, you will need "Hi-Fi" before you get this book. This book, though it does review some of "Hi-Fi's" rudiments in the beginning pages, assumes you've already read that book and done its lessons first. Just a friendly FYI.

All in all, "Master Digital Color" is a superb book for those interested in learning how to color in a comic book style on the computer, and raises the bar for such books yet again. I recommend it without hesitation. Good luck!

Impressionism--its techniques as well as its practitioners, past and present--continues to excite the passions of artists and art enthusiasts alike. And the influence on American art has had a long and distinguished history. 1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
Was looking for inspiration and new insights into painting with oils. This book did not provide me with either.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excpetional Book
I have read quite a few books on drawing and painting.Few other painting books that have actually excited me enough to do the exercises! This one is exceptional:well-written, beautifully illustrated (especially with the author's paintings), clear exercises presented in a well thought-out and detailed manner. If you like color, like I do, this is the book for you. I learned a great deal about the impressionist use of color, how to create atmosphere in a painting, light and shadow, and other important elements related to painting plein air.

5-0 out of 5 stars buy the book then take Griffel's workshop
First I bought the book and after reading it went online to see where I could take a workshop from the author.
I got very lucky that one was scheduled about an hour away so I could commute (well I had to wait a year for it). Others in the class flew and drove many miles to spend a week with Lois Griffel learning the basics so that we could all become better painters. I won't go into exact details (take the course/buy the book) but it was a fascinating step-by-step process.
One of the great advantages is that she painted along side us, first starting the painting, giving us the beginning, then we spent the morning working in fantastically beautiful locations. It is a great privilege to watch a nationally known painter paint a landscape from start to finish, what a learning curve.
My workshop was in Sarasota FL sponsored by [...]. We painted at the Ringling Estate gardens and Crosley Powell mansion. Trees, vintage buildings, Sarasota Bay, perfect weather, what more could we ask for.(Saw a famous actress stroll through too).

Monet is my favorite artist (Griffels also) and she teaches how to paint in that style, in a way that is learnable.
My classmates were some of the nicest people ever, many highly talented and well-trained. I am not but felt just as welcome.

If you can't afford a workshop BUY THE BOOK. Plus she has a new one coming out soon (summer 2010).

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring. I couldn't put it down.
Lois Griffel introduces and explains the color theories of Charles Hawthorn which have been passed down since 1899 through his Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The color theories and approach to painting presented in the book are exciting and Lois demonstrates the concepts through a series of simple exercises. Throughout the book Lois presents beautiful color images of impressionist landscape paintings and pastels to illustrate the techniques through multiple examples. I bought this book because it sounded interesting even though I was looking for a book on Henry Moore. It was one of the best impulse purchase I have ever made and I highly recommend it to any student interested with the Impressionist techniques of light and color and wanting to advance their knowledge and improve their style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!
This is a beautiful and yet practical book - filled with wonderful images and great hints about impressionism. It has inspired me to grow in my limited experience with oil painting.I have cut out the wood for the block studies and will certainly follow her advice in learning to observe light and shadow. Learning about painting is a never-ending quest, and there are lots of instruction books out there; most I have seen don't have as much practical information as this one.Definitely a choice for anyone who wishes to grow as an Impressionist landscape painter. ... Product Description

Crafted with the precision of a Fair Isle garment, informed by accounts from the knitters themselves, and set firmly within its historical and sociological roots, this magnificent classic, first published in 1997, explores the heart of the knitting tradition from the tiny island north of Scotland. From the first small knitted items sold to fishermen and tourists in the 19th century and the highly fashionable androgynous sweaters of the 1920s to the large, starry Norwegian patterns popular after World War II and the hand- and machine-made yoked sweaters of the 1960s and 1970s, ardent dedication is applied to researching the history of each subject. Presenting 23 original Fair Isle designs, the guide leads knitters through the history of the Fair Isle knitting tradition in this examination of the style’s techniques, explicating not only the unique colorways and patterns but also such valuable details as ways to hold the yarn. A chapter on calculating accurate sizes and patterns is easy to understand, while a glossary of Shetland knitting terms links a nearly-extinct way of life with the knowledge and skills that this volume hopes to preserve for generations of knitters to come. Conveying an unending sense of pride in the dedication of the Shetland knitters and in the creation of exceptional garments, knitters will be further enriched by journey’s end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful designs
This book contains very helpful suggestions for designing one's own sweaters (with a particularly strong section on how to use color) as well as THE most beautiful original Fair Isle sweater patterns I have ever seen, far more attractive in my opinion than e. g. Alice Starmore's much-hyped designs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic guide
More indepth information about the artistic development of the style than others.Good basic data about how to begin designing your own patterns. One of two essential books, I would think, for any seriouos knitter who is interested in learning these techniques.
Well written, easy to read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Author may be experienced, but not in British style knitting -
After having lived 20 years in Britain, and learning to knit there, I looked forward to getting this book.Unfortunately, I found a few mistakes in the drawings of how the yarn is held (see the reference to "one hand is a mirror of the other").Further, the author described a 1940's picture of a woman wearing a knitting belt as holding the knitting yarn the same way as the accompanying drawing depicts. This is false - the knitter is using the right "underhand" knitting style in which the needle is cradled in the space between the thumb and forefinger, with the thumb dropped low to support the weight of the knitting. This is how I was taught, and this is how I have seen every other British person knit. The hand is never on the top side of the right needle, it is always held supporting the knitting (under the knitting and needle - almost as if the fingers were holding an artist's paintbrush).

The author's words implied she lived in the Shetland Isles/outer Hebredes when in fact I think she likely visited there.Just because she wore knitted fair isle garments when growing up does not mean she lived there. However, the statements lead one to believe she lived on or near Fair Isle.I was not impressed with the patterns, with the exception of the yoked pattern. That showed promise.

As far as the book is concerned, it is well edited and has some interesting photographs.I do believe that the author is similar to the quilting world's famed Barbara Brackman - well read, a noted historian of the subject, designs reproduction quilts, but doesn't really quilt.Nuff said.

5-0 out of 5 stars Drool Slurp Smack ....eye candy and instructive too
Yes, this is a reprint of a 1996 or thereabouts book, but this is a good thing; knitting books go oop too often and are found at supernatural prices in scant quantities. So it's nice to see this book again, with beautiful photos of vests, cardigans, pullovers, hats and gloves.

There are a number of hats that you can use to practice your technique but I was raring to go, to knit a charcoal, pale grey, pale blue and cream vest that would suit my guy at home to a tee. Or over a tee. Well, over a shirt, anyway. And there are some really beautiful pullovers.

The book goes into color mixing (banding) for the backgrounds, steeks (the way to cut down the front of tubes knit in pattern in order to create a cardigan)--also much about tradition.

I did not find this disappointing at all, in fact, I like it as well as many of the other famous Fair Isle books out there and I can't wait to cast on that vest. Recommended for those who love color knitting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.
Fair Isle knitting is one of my favorite things to do.I thought the information was very interesting, but was really a little disappointed in it overall. It is hard to imagine women having to knit to make a living and resenting it when in today's culture it is all about the love of knitting!I was expecting a glamorous review when it was quite the opposite.Guess it just shows how times have changed!

Enjoy!

Product Description
Color is fundamental to life and art yet so diverse that it has seldom been studied in a comprehensive way. This ground-breaking analysis of color in Western culture from the ancient Greeks to the late twentieth century is a John Gage triumph. With originality and erudition, he describes the first theories of color articulated by philosophers from Democritus to Aristotle and the subsequent attempts by the Romans and their Renaissance disciples to organize color systematically or endow it with symbolic power. The place of color in religion, Newton's analysis of the spectrum, Goethe's color theory, and the theories and practices that have attempted to unite color and music are among the intriguing topics this award-winning book illuminates. With a large classified bibliography, discursive footnotes, and an exhaustive index, Color and Culture is an invaluable resource for artists, historians of art and culture, psychologists, linguists, and anyone fascinated by this most inescapable and evocative element of our perceptions. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars pretty complete
This book shows you all you want to know about colours. It's not truly scientific but it showed me the best and most of colour-theory. I had some trouble with the science-language but hey, I'm Dutch, not a native "American" speaker! The only thing that I would change in this book is more pictures, and all in colour!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great coffee table book
While I won't go to the trouble of selling this book, I do regret having purchased it. There are many other texts that do a much more nuanced and cogent exposition of the relationship between color and culture. My future use of this book will be as a visual reference, i.e. to refer to the various paintings and other works gorgeously reproduced in color.

Otherwise, Gage's Color and Culture as well as Color and Meaning are best used as "intelligent" coffee table tomes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even better than Color Choices
This book does go beyond "Color Choices" in that it is a more extensive review of the importance of value and intensity...great stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Most Useful Books I Have
Stephen Quiller is one of my favourite painters, and I have found his book on color to be indispensible. His supreme understanding of colour he passes on effortlessly to the reader in an easy to understood manner. His colour wheel, with its many layered variations and how they fit into the whole, is a revelation. Also his own palette and the reasons behind his choices is a must see.

The bonus is the illustrations of his theories, as manifest in his own paintings. Most of which are brilliant.

(The only thing is, I lent my copy to a fellow artist and I don't think it's going to come back..)

3-0 out of 5 stars Colour
Not a beginner's book, this book was way over my head....but I am sure that once I improved it will make more sense to me and I will enjoy it....I know of a couple of advanced artist that swear by him, but I am truly just a beginner

2-0 out of 5 stars confusing new color mixing book
this is stephen quiller's sequel to "color choices" with the addition of new information about neutral mixtures (Jean Dobie's "mouse power"), color value and intensity (saturation), colorfamilies, "mother color", and the latest version of quiller'scolor mixing wheel, one of the best available. but i was disappointed. thebook suffers from a mechanical approach to color mixing or color families-- in some cases, the text of captions or whole sections is identical, withcolor keywords repeatedly changed. this edition deletes some of the bestchapters in "color choices," such as the chapter on "findingyour own vision," adding in its place a bizarre section on "colorpersonalities" (each mixed color is associated with adjectives such as"noble" or "playful"). and quiller recommends a28-paint (!) palette, which will create more confusion for a painter(especially a beginning painter) than all the mixing instructions can clearaway. i suggest you browse this book before you buy it: "colorchoices" is better overall, and you can order quiller's revised colorwheel from him directly, on a plastic card that is more durable than thetear-out version that comes with this book. ...
