Product Description

Gods and Heroes in Art aims to help museum patrons and art lovers recognize the legendary characters of classical antiquity in art. The characters are each described in entries summarizing their distinctive stories, their special attributes, and the ways in which artists have depicted them. Each entry is richly illustrated with reproductions of works of art in which the god or hero is pictured, giving readers a chance to examine images of the character and to understand the work of art better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gods and heroes well; presented
This book-Gods and Heroes in Art-contains some 400 or so full-color pictures of great artistic works with concise and informative notes. As a myth enthusiast, this book is a valuable addition to my reference collection.

3-0 out of 5 stars The wrong title?
Once again I am not overly impressed by the breadth and depth of this piece of the Getty Publications "Art" series. It might have been more properly titled; "Key Figures of Ancient Greco-Roman Legend and Mythology."
Nothing about Celtic, Norse, Germanic or Slavic is included, let alone out of the center of the Greco-Roman's Europe. All of these bits and pieces are instrumental in understanding modern Western civilization and artwork, and it's roots. The simple arrogance of ignoring them in such an all inclusive title is insulting.

The colour plates are the one strong point, and saving grace of this publication. While they are undersized at just under 6" x 8", some plates being as small as 1" x 3", so as to not be able to truly appreciate the masterpieces of art included; the collection is one of the most concise I've seen. I would have prefered this in a coffee table size, to be able to truly appreciate the subtles hues and tones, and complex imagery in the included art.

I am not overly thrilled with the callouts and pointers on top of the artwork. "Hero throws herself from the tower in desperation after Leander's death." and an ugly line across the art to the robed body falling to the rocky reaches below. The style is overtly reminiscent of a seventh grade biology text book, which I would presume is the level this work is written to.

I don't believe it is meant to be presented to a literary adult audience. If you obtain this as an equivilant of Cliffs Notes to Greco-Roman mythology artworks, then it will be spot on. Even with the authors' pompous of evaluation in the introduction of how difficult it is to understand and interpret artwork and legend and the wonderful work in making such a compilation; I still feel somewhat cheated buying it used.

I feel a work such as Celtic Myths and Legendshas more worth on my bookshelf, without the colourful plates and descriptors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!
This book was wonderfully done and very useful for the appreciation and study of the ancient gods and the works of art depicting them. This book is chuck full of artwork (375 pages). You will not be disappointed!Great to use along side the study of ancient history, as the art is captivating and really brings the gods to life! Good for all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mythology and the art that celebrates it
I first saw this book for sale at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for way more than I could afford.Thank goodness for Amazon. This full-color, art-filled guide to Gods and Heroes (including characters from the epics of Homer) has to be one of my favorite books on the shelf.

Each subject gets at least a short caption explaining the major myths surrounding him or her, then one or more of the world's great paintings protraying an episode from the myth, with short but excellent captions explaining features of the painting and symbols that identify the God or Hero.Of course Art History majors will find this book irresistable -- but I think most people with any kind of interest in art or Greek and Roman mythology will too.

Case in point: I showed this book to an IT guy I work with and he was so impressed by it he immediately went online and ordered two copies, one for himself and one for a young cousin he knew would love it.I know I would've loved to have it as a kid, when I was in that phase where I was deep into Greek mythology and Homeric tales. It also would've made field trips to the museum a lot more interesting too, since half the fun is taking what you've learned and applying it: "That must be Athena.See the spear, and the shield and the helmet.Cool.Hey, that one was in the book!"

Or something like that.I also plan to check out the other books in the series: Old Testament Figures in Art, Gospel Figure in Art and Saints in Art.I'm not as much into Christian iconography, but if those books are half as cool as this one is, I'll really enjoy them.5 big stars out of 5!

5-0 out of 5 stars Full-color plates of masterpiece artworks from human history
400 full-color plates of masterpiece artworks from human history superbly illuminate the pages of Gods And Heroes In Art, which presents the readers with a brief introduction to (and an informative summary of) the legends behind the deities of Greek and Roman mythology that are often depicted in classical art. Gods And Heroes In Art is visual feast as well as a convenient reference for art and mythology buffs. Also very highly recommended is a companion volume from the J. Paul Getty Museum, Saints In Art (0892367172, $..., 384 pages, 400 color plates). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Used it for a paper and decided I "had to have it"
I had to write a paper for a History class and grabbed this book as a source from my college library. When I got it home I was so impressed I decided I needed it, even if I had to buy it new(the horror). Luckily I found it on Amazon for something ridiculous (less than $1). This is a great book for students or anyone interested in art. It has a section with essays by learned individuals regarding art history, a section of plates of interesting art, and then the bulk of the book is devoted to terms and such related to art history. Very useful to a student, regardless of major, if you get a chance get this book. It also just makes for interesting browsing...

4-0 out of 5 stars Bulfinch Guide
This volume represnts two styles of art history guides encompassed in a single voume. The first part is a series of essays ranging from ancient art to architecture to modern art and is meant for the serious art history student. The essays are detailed to the point that beginners may have a difficult time digesting and retaining the information. The second part is the encyclopedic section with many entries ranging from artists to styles to subjects and beyond. It is here the novice will find relevant information, albiet brief, on most topics a beginning student will need.

The two sections do not hurt the overall impact of the book, but they do take away space which may prevent either from fully developing its message. One editorial hangup is the use of arrows to indicate cross referenced terms. When grouped together, these can be very annoying.Italics or boldfaced indicators would have seemed more logical.

This book makes for a good introduction, and depending on the seriousness of the reader, can be very useful in understanding art history.

3-0 out of 5 stars good and bad
An interesting attempt at a 'politically correct' history of art, with dutiful articles on gender, otherness etc. The book is interesting partly because some of the essays at the beginning transcend the limitations oftheir brief, and also because they demonstrate some of the tensions anddebates evident in the discipline at this time.

The dictionary section isgenerally good on artists - but far to many minor Brits get entries.Despite the gestures towards multi-cultural values, this remains an utterlyEurocentric account of art. Some entries on 'trendy' French thinkers arereally irrelevant in a book about art history, and are often laughabletrivialisations of their thought (see the entry on Foucault, for example). These should have been excluded. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Herder Dictionary of Symbols
Excellent reference book, good illustrations, text and comprehensive. Only one minor complaint, the book is so small.Width wise it is about 4" which makes it difficult to hold open.Next time it's reprint, please widen it just a little.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compact & handy for quick reference...helps to guide my 'deliberate doodling' processes!
The Herder Dictionary of Symbols: Symbols from Art, Archaeology, Mythology, Literature, and Religion
by Boris Matthews

I bought this small book on symbols for the primary purpose of guiding my 'deliberate doodling' as well as mind-mapping processes. It's compact & handy for quick reference. It has more than 1,000 entries & 450 illustrations.

It is, in fact, the only symbol book I owned at this moment. It has symbols from art, archaeology, mythology, literature & religion.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Herder Dictionary of Symbols: Symbols from Art, Archaeology, Mythology, Literature, and Religion
This book has been very good resource for some art work that I am producing.

5-0 out of 5 stars great reference book for symbols
I have been using this book as a reference for years. It is a wonderful book, full of information from a wide variety of cultures and disciplines. My only disappointment in the book is that it is not three times larger. I would love to see it expanded to include more symbols.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book for the price!
This book is tiny but full of little pictures that make it an even better reference guide. If you are looking for color pictures, detailed information and/or illustrated examples in culture then this is NOT the book for you. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Laid-Out but Useless
We have had the 1998 version of this dictionary for years and I would generously estimate that 9 out of 10 times the word we are looking for is not there.Just looked up the word "folly" this morning--not there; really!!This book is much easier to use than a regular dictionary because of its easy lay-out, but it's a waste of time to pull it off of the shelf, knowing you're not likely to find what you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars great
This dictionary was recommended to me by a teacher. It is easy to use for my student's first dictionary. The print is large so it's not overwhelming. There are also pictures and examples of how to use a word in a sentence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific dictionary for kids
My son, who is a precocious seven, loves this dictionary. Its definitions are clear and simple but still fully accurate and not dumbed-down.It has many pictures to help illustrate things that are hard to describe in words (but not too many; this is a dictionary, not a picture book).Since the definitions are accurate enough for most adult purposes, this dictionary will carry him through several years until our child is old enough to use ones aimed at middle and high school students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent learning tool
A great dictionary for those in between years: too young for a major dictionary, too old for Dr. Sues. Very complete, easy to understand. Definitely a must-have for elementary studies.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very basic
I would not recommend this book. It's old and dated.Kids these days have a much broader vocabulary than this book recognizes. This is a very limited resource. ... Read more

Product Description
This sumptuously illustrated volume analyzes artists' representations of angels and demons and heaven and hell from the Judeo-Christian tradition and describes how these artistic portrayals evolved over time.As with other books in the Guide to Imagery series, the goal of this volume is to help contemporary art enthusiasts decode the symbolic meanings in the great masterworks of Western Art. The first chapter traces the development of images of the Creation and the Afterworld from descriptions of them in the Scriptures through their evolution in later literary and philosophical works. The following two chapters examine artists' depictions of the two paths that humans may take, the path of evil or the path of salvation, and the punishments or rewards found on each. A chapter on the Judgment Day and the end of the world explores portrayals of the mysterious worlds between life and death and in the afterlife. Finally, the author looks at images of angelic and demonic beings themselves and how they came to be portrayed with the physical attributes--wings, halos, horns, and cloven hooves--with which we are now so familiar. Thoroughly researched by and expert in the field of iconography, Angels and Demons in Art will delight readers with an interest in art or religious symbolism. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Over-rated
While this is an interesting compilation of angels and demons in art, it is incomplete. There are several key pieces of art that are completely missing and deemed not worthy of mentioning by the author or editors.
The images are poorly reproduced, and so small as to leave me wondering if I was able to interperet the art for myself, or just left be told what I'm supposed to think it means. The orginization of the chapters is well done, even though it roughly follows the biblical presentation of such.

Within seconds of opening the cover, I felt as if it was writing down to the reader. The inane descriptors targeting key points in the presented art work are reminiscent of a children's television show presenting colours and alphabet to pre-school children.

If you are looking for a Cliff's notes book for art interpretation, or a religious education course, this might be a passable resource for one term paper or reference for further research. I personally wouldn't use it as a resource for teaching or writing beyond those means.

5-0 out of 5 stars Angels and Demons in Art
I first checked this book out at the library. No special reason. I was captivated by the wonderful descriptions of paintings that I had not seen before. Except maybemany years ago in Art history classes. I so loved the book that I purchased it!!! I also ordered another one in the Guide to Imagery series sight unseen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect!
If there was a review higher than five stars, this book should get it! The cover alone deserves five stars! This book is the single most perfect book I've seen on angels! It's wonderful! The artwork, the explanations of the different categories of angels; it's all perfect! If you're interested in angels, this is a must have for any collection! ... Read more

Product Description
Beginning in the 1580s and ending as late as 1750 in some Northern European regions, the Baroque artistic era began as an artistic recoil to the stylizations of Mannerist art and as a means of implementation of the demands of the Counter-Reformation Church that sought to restore its religious preeminence in the Western world in the face of the Protestant threat. As a result, Rome, the seat of the papacy, became the cradle of Baroque art, and masters from other parts of the Italian peninsula flocked to the region in the hopes of obtaining artistic commissions. The Historical Dictionary of Baroque Art and Architecture relates the history of the Baroque Era through a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and over 500 cross-referenced dictionary entries on such icons as Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Caravaggio, Annibale Carracci, Diego Vel_zquez, Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Johannes Vermeer, as well as sculptors, architects, patrons, other historical figures, and events. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Sadly an end of an era for the OED.!!!!!!
Although a great dictionary, it cannot be compared with the old NEWNES ELIZABETHEN reference dictionary 4th edition, often when I cannot find a word in the OED I have to refer to the Newnes, as the saying goes, "They don't build them like this today" however I hear the OED is in it's final days through lack of sales (profits)and soon to have a computerised Website version, sadly a sign of the times.
So if you have not got a OED, go get one now, before it's out of print.

3-0 out of 5 stars Does Not Entirely Serve My Purpose
This is a dictionary which would be useful for those learning English. It is not so good for those reading 19th Century literature. It is beautifully presented and easy to read but does not have sufficient detail on some more obscure words.

What a pleasure to have this book. If you follow the directions for using this book I don't think there is a phrase you couldn't translate. Just don't use the Vernacular.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dictionary for Bureaucrats--but for others too
One might sometimes think that this dictionary is meant for government clerks talking about the EU--there are many entries that seem to me more descriptions of bureaucratic functions than lexicography. But this is a cavil--those things are there if you want them. It's fine for Dante's Italian too.It is a very good, thorough dictionary for anyone with serious needs in the language. Its grammatical articles (a pure extra, after all, in a dictionary) are plentiful and crystal clear. Its tables of verbs, clothing sizes, conversions, you-name-it, are likewise. It's a bit big to carry around, of course.

The paper is so thin yet strong, when you leave it open at an entry, it remains so, when you do eventually put it on the shelf,it will fit, and you do not get a hernia taking it out again.

3-0 out of 5 stars This dictionary is not on par with other Oxford language dictionaries
Being an American, I found it difficult to understand the British English translations. I was also disappointed that there aren't as many entries under the main word like there are in the Oxford French and German dictionary, but the Oxford Italian dictionary from Amazon is much more expensive ($43.55) than the others. Even though it costs more, it is much smaller than Oxford's French and German dictionary, the pages are very thin, and the binding is bad.I had to have the dictionary replaced twice, because the binding separated from the backing. The third time I sent it back, Amazon's customer service emailed me that this was a persistent problem with this dictionary and that the company was not going to send a replacement. Meanwhile, I'm using Webster's New World Italian dictionary which is excellent for a paperback.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great and practical resource
I like this dictionary so much that when I spilled coffee on my old copy I kept using it until the front cover came off. Then, I found it here on Amazon for this amazing price (it was$75 at a mall bookstore) and I finally replaced it.The definitions provide clear guidelines on usage, to help clarify precisely which definition you're looking for and it alerts you to whether the term is appropriate for British or American English. The Guide to Effective Communication at the end is priceless - I used it to decide what to record on my answering machine in Italy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent reference, depending on your need
If you need to discover all about a certain time period's costume details, this book isn't what you need. However, as a fantasy writer, I find this book an incredibly useful tool in helping me get the right word for costume parts.Organized in the form of a dictionary, the book requires you to know what you are looking to find; but it's still useful as more than a dictionary:You can look under general topics, such as 'skirts' or 'sleeves' and learn a lot about various styles in a backwards fashion.

All in all, a bit difficult to use, but a good book to have in your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Useful
I believe the book is very complete, not only because of the word definitions, but also because of the pictures which show how costumes were in each fashion trend and in which we can see diferences between time an place. I have just recieved the book and that is the impresion I have from a quick look.

1-0 out of 5 stars not worth it
This text was required for my costume history course.I found it lacking -- many definitions do not have images to illustrate them, making learning difficult.Definitions are not very descriptive: if you're looking for a comprehensive fashion dictionary, this isn't it.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great reference item!
I just received my copy today, and I am thrilled with it.It is exactly what I was hoping for, a useful, easy to pick up (it's lightweight and not so large that it's a difficult reference), simple to use reference material for our costume shop.Includes broader headings (sportswear), as well as specifics, the pictures are great (although more would be helpful), and there are fabric descriptions as well.Highly recommended as a reference, do not purchase as a reading book.Perfect for a work setting.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Dictionary of Costume and Fashion
I found this book to be rather comprehensive in terminology and volume of terms.I would have liked tohave seen some dates for items, at least approximately.Eg: It is important to know when the zipper was invented in order to make a historically correct dress. But all in all the book has been helpful with definitions and illustrations. ... Product Description
Surrealism was a broad movement, which attracted many adherents. It was organized and quite strictly disciplined, at least until the death of its leader, AndrZ Breton, in 1966. As a consequence, its membership was in a constant state of flux: persons were constantly being admitted and excluded, and often the latter continued to regard themselves as Surrealists. The wide-ranging nature of the Surrealist movement was spread over many countries and many different art forms, including painting, sculpture, cinema, photography, music, theater, and literature, most notably poetry. The Historical Dictionary of Surrealism relates the history of this movement through a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and over 600 cross-referenced dictionary entries on persons, circles, and groups who participated in the movement; a global entry on some of the journals and reviews they produced; and a sampling of major works of art, cinema, and literature. ...
