5-0 out of 5 stars love garfield
Initally purchased this for one of my daughters. Now this one is for my grandson. I still have my daughters Dictionary at my desk and people always come by to borrow it.(wheres Garfield?) they ask!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Merriam-Webster and Garfield Dictionary
Not as comprehensive as a collegiate dictionary but it does the job for my 9 year old.He hates using the dictionary but loves Garfield. Now, he is more apt to use it and for quite reading time.Every other page utilizes a word within each Garfield cartoon to bring more sense to its meaning.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good dictionary - a great twist
This is actually one of the better middle to high school dictionaries out there. Readable font size, extensive word list, moderate definitions (not too little or too much detail).

Why this dictionary over others, though? Admittedly it's Garfield. Students have spent a lot more time "inside" this dictionary than others for obvious reasons. In this case it's ok.I'd recommend this dictionary to any parent/family member considering a dictionary for a middle or high school aged student.

Consider buying a used one too - for some reason there are always a lot of them for cheap!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for Kids but Incomplete for Adults
I get really bored using those thick and heavy dictionaries that have such small fonts i'd get dizzy looking up words. this is where garfield helped me, the font size used in this dictionary is just right and the comics made looking up words something fun to do. although some words were kinda inappropriate for some of the comic strips, it nonetheless got the essence of the word. this dictionary has enough words for let's say kids and teenagers but as you read adult books, you'll find words that aren't in this dictionary anymore. i'll have to go back to my good old merriam-webster collegiate dictionary 11th ed. but then again this dictionary was made for kids aged 9-12 so it's all good, it serves its purpose. a good buy for kids who'd like to learn and for adults who want to be entertained.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not your average dictionary!
I needed a dictionary for my son (3rd grader), and he told me he used a Garfield dictionary. He said this was the one he used when I showed him the picture. I was so surprised when I received it, to see that its just like a normal dictionary, except there are comics in it, using examples of words in the dictionary.
It can be used for children or adults alike. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 1/2... Indispensable Reference and Guide to the World of Art
For a long time now,"The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art and Artists" has been my guide and reference in relation to art and it's world. This reliable and comprehensive guide is a good source for information on artists, major works of art, schools in relation to the art scene, and the various movements and genres throughout it's history. One can come across well-written entries on"The Dying Gaul", Michelangelo, Impressionism, Bauhaus, and many others. The writing focuses primarily on the subject and his / her / it's influence, with a touch of the right amount of personal information to give it a considerably well-rounded, professional whole.

Vast and informative, this classic reference guide is one of the best in the field. I look forward to purchasing the latest edition. - This is a review of the 1990 edition ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars pretty slim for an A-Z record of Art History
I was expecting a much more deeply detailed book for something calling itself an A-Z handbook. Many of the words my Art 101 teacher gave us were not listed in this book.I'm still trying to figure out why she recommended this book to us!

5-0 out of 5 stars Art History Handbook
I had no problems with the seller, the book is in great condition and it came pretty fast.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wrong Addition
I recieved this book from Amazon via Usedbooks 123 and recieved wrong addition. I did send e-mail to try to get correct edition, but instead they stated "I could keep the text and they would refund my money"...I have yet to recieve a refund!

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete for a beginner ...
I recently purchased this text along with Janson's History of Art (5th ed.). Although this handbook was written with Janson's 6th edition in mind, it has not taken away from my cross-referenced learning experience. Throughout the text, there are references to examples (illustrations) in History of Art (or other popular art history texts) which help in applying the "theory" (if you can call it that) with the "application."

The text has a wide range of art terms key to the study and analysis of art history. The section on Christian subjects, signs and symbols has helped me decipher the icons depicted in Christian-themed pieces of the Renaissance.

My copy of the text is bound somewhat backwards towards the end. The Index and Artist Chronology pages, for example, are divided and unordered ... but it does not take away from the text's usablity!

All in all, I believe this text has been a great investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars From Abacus to Zeus
In Abacus to Zeus, you will find a wonderful, concise, approachable 'quick and dirty' reference for those new to studying the visual arts. James Pierce brings together many of the pesky, essential--and formerly,ellusive--details in an accessible reference. Deffinitions withillustrations, terms and stories of mythology, religious art,and achronology of artists and architects (complete with pronunciationguide--indespensible for those of us who remain unilingual) work welltogether to make this book a find! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Review of The Literacy Dictionary
Three years ago, as a new reading teacher, I would be at many training meetings where there were many literacy terms being thrown around at will. Not wanting to appear uninformed,I hesitated to ask colleagues what the new "buzz words" meant. It wasn't until my college professor held up her copy of The Literacy Dictionary in class one day and referred to it as a necessary tool that I decided, "If it's good enough for her, then I definitely need to invest in this book." I was not disappointed. It was my greatest tool as I used it to prepare for certification as a reading specialist. I often refer to The Literacy Dictionary when I am preparing to facilitate professional development workshops. I recently gave this dictionary to a colleague who, like me, was wondering how to keep up with all the jargon tossed back and forth in her professional meetings.I recommend this book to anyone trying to keep in step with the language of reading and writing. ... The dictionary section, made up of more than 500 cross-referenced entries, provides brief vignettes of the more popular and also less well-known _soaps,_ among them Back Stage Wife, Our Gal Sunday, Pepper Young's Family and The Guiding Light. Other entries evoke those who brought these programs to life: the actors, announcers, scriptwriters, networks, and even the sponsors. Nor are the basic themes, the stock characters and the gimmick, forgotten. The book's introduction defines the soap opera, examines the span of the radio serial, reviews its origins and its demise, and focuses on the character types that made up its denizens. The chronology outlines the period and the bibliography offers further reading. Together, these elements make a comprehensive reference work that researchers will find invaluable long into the future. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Book on Radio Soap Operas

In 1999 the book The Great Radio Soap Operas by Jim Cox was published. This book focused on 31 of the hundreds of soap operas that aired during the Golden Age of Radio and whetted the appetites of Old-Time Radio fans for a more comprehensive volume on Radio Soap Operas.

In late 2005 that more inclusive book arrived, Scarecrow Press published Jim Cox's HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN RADIO SOAP OPERAS as a volume in their Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts series.

OTR fans have come to expect informative and entertaining books from Jim Cox.They will not be disappointed with his HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN RADIO SOAP OPERAS.Jim has packed an amazing amount of information into his 320 page volume.

It begins with an enlightening Chronology that spans the time period 1925 to 1960, halcyon days of the Radio Soap Opera. The most of the Introduction deals with the origins, basic plot and characterization schemas, and business aspects of Radio Soap Operas. An Overview Of The Dictionary which discusses its content and organization is the concluding section of the Introduction..

The Dictionary constitutes the major part of the book and is arranged in alphabetical order with over 450 entries which fall into one of following four categories.

Series:
There are in excess of 300 entries on the individual series, famous and obscure. These entriescontain information on primary titles with cross references to alternate titles, plot and character overview, network affiliations, beginning and ending air dates, and cast, crew, and sponsor information. It is, in all probability, the most comprehensive compilation of American Radio Soap Operas.

Individuals:
Over 60 biographical entries of actors, writers, directors, producers, and announcers who prominently figured in the success of the genre. Several more entries deal with authors who have written about the American Radio Soap Opera.

Topics:
Additionally there are more than 50 entries that supply the reader with enlightening information on broadcasting terms, plotline concepts and devices, and Soap Opera sub-genres.

Organizations:
Finally, there are over 20 entries that discuss major advertising and talent agencies, awards, networks, production companies, ratings services, sponsors, and unions.

The Bibliography contains much more content than just standard citations of reference works and periodicals dealing with radio and soap operas.Additional sources of information on prominent soap opera figures are listed. Information is provided on several useful Internet websites. There also is a listing of research archives with prominent collections of soap opera related materials.

As this book is a dictionary, there is no index. However, throughout the book, references to persons, series, topics, and organizations that have their own separate entries are shown in bold text.

With the publication of his HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN RADIO SOAP OPERAS, Jim Cox has contributed yet another highly informative and enjoyable tome to the literature on American Old-Time Radio. There is little doubt that this book will become the standard general reference on the American daytime radio adult serial drama. If you are a fan of Radio soap operas or just interested in Old-Time Radio history in general, this book deserves a place in your library.

Product Description
When in 1902 Owen Wister, a member of the Eastern blueblood aristocracy and friend of novelist Henry James, became a best-selling novelist with the publication of The Virginian, few readers would have guessed that a new kind of American literature was being born. While Owen Wister was enjoying his success, Edwin S. Porter in New Jersey was filming the first cinema Western The Great Train Robbery, which would usher in a new era both of movies in general and of Western movies in particular. Both events would lead to a century of cultural fascination with stories of the old West. The Historical Dictionary of Westerns in Literature tells the story of the Western through a chronology, a bibliography, an introductory essay, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on authors such as Owen Wister, Zane Grey, Max Brand, Clarence Mulford, Ernest Haycox, Luke Short, Dorothy Johnson, Louis L'Amour, and Cormac McCarthy. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars I think that this book is so badly
I think that this book is so badly,
I thought that I have been deceived, first, this book not necessarily is that book which I need, although the book title page is the book title page which and I order is the same, but the content actually downloads with me electronic version each entry difference are too many. Second, the book print quality is very bad, the printing shop uses paper thin elephant toilet tissue, what is most hateful is above also has spreads the picture, but also has the book side also to have the trace which the man-power draws. All these cause me to the shopping to have the very big suspicion once more in the expensive website, I felt that I have been deceived, but there is no place suit, I will spend 300 the nearly Renminbi to obtain indeed will also be pirate the book

5-0 out of 5 stars Endlessly fascinating!
I bought this book for my ESL teacher training course, but I'd recommend it to anyone interested in language and usage. Built up from a database of millions of examples of language in context, Collins Cobuild lists every usage of the most common words in English, both American and British, from slang to literary and formal usage. Much more than a mere dictionary, Collins Cobuild focuses on how the word is used in the real world. A great companion to a traditional dictionary.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dictionary with wry sense of humour lacks rare words
Straight up - i love this dictionary for the following reasons:

1. it defines words in context, not rigidly. ie, the definition of the word 'fertile' is not laid out as "when something is x" but as "something is fertile when x". the definitions actually read nicely.

2. the example sentences have obviously been selected or scripted with a sense of humour! i really, really enjoy reading them. they sometimes go out of the way to make the example sentences interesting. for example, in the entry for "feminine"

- I've always been attracted to very feminine women who are not overpowering, the delicate English-rose type.

HAHAAA!

Ok. what i don't like so much about this dictionary is the small number of words that are new to me. this is not to say that i know lots of words - i'm disappointed that this dictionary lacks in rare words, or words more specific to special fields (law, biology, etc). especially since it is an Advanced Learner's dictionary, i expect it to have rare and difficult words, you know... more erm... i'd just like to to be more verbose. (HAHA)

i complain about this because the dictionary is such a wonderful read that it actually encourages people to read it as a book, for entertainment and education. i wish it would have more rare words for me to learn. since it is already such an excellent learning tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of a kind Dictionary!
As a learner of English language, this has been a dream dictionary for me. I never thought in my wildest dreams that I'd be able to have my hands on this one of a kind dictionary. This is the best dictionary an ESL can buy and will never be looking back again to other dictionaries! I can bet my house at this claim!

Key Features:

- Example sentences are taken from real resources (magazines, newspapers, transcripts, etc). Too many examples for an each entry.

- Clear definitions.
Each definition is composed of one or two sentences. They are that long. One easly can grasp the meaning of a word without looking at its example sentences.

- Very updated.
You'll find countless phrases, expressions, idioms, slang and phrasal verbs alongside their clear and easy to grasp definitions and examples.

- Frequency of words.
Each word is rated by its frequency of usage by native spakers. Most frequent word starts from rating (*****) to the least one(*). This feature will demonstrate to English learners that which word is more important to learn or which is not. A very helpful option.

- Each entry is defined by its nature like slang, informal, offensive, rude, very rude, medical, spoken, technical, written..etc. This feature will demonstrate how one can or can't use the word in certain situations.

- This is basically an advanced dictionary. It'll be very helpful for those learners who have already cleared their high intermediate level and can read and understand simple English definitions and example sentences.

In short, It's like a book. You can read the whole dictionary for fun, won't be tired!!

1-0 out of 5 stars dictionary of graphic design and designers
This book was of no use in a history of graphic design class I took for which the text was Megg's History of Graphic Design.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but could be better
I think this book is ok, it is informative but i also think that there is a lot that is being left out. There is a lot of design terminology that i think should be included for this to be called a real Dictionary of design. ... Read more
