2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Thought the most interesting painting was on the cover page. Was disappointed with the rest of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Artwork
Having retired and taking an oil painting class that is primarily landscapes, this book has helped me understand the painting process a great deal.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in sequel to Brushwork Essentials
Mark's first book, Brushwork Essential is a very informative, instructional book on painting, covering a lot more than just knowledge on brushes. I love his realistic style of painting and was hoping for more insight on how to create such lovely work.Bold Strokes takes a completely different approach to painting, but uses much of the same stuff that was in the first book about loading brushes and the brand of paint he prefers.
I found this book was filled with large and full page photos and a lot less text. Also many of the pages have large blank areas, making it a quick read.
To me this style of painting with it's globs and smears of paint is too unfinished and amateurish looking. The exercises give brief instruction with each photo to get you to try the various techniques and strokes, but the colors are awful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bold, beautiful COLOR!!!
I love this book!!! It just arrived today and I could not put it down. New to oils, I got a good education first and foremost, and being no stranger to art, I adapted immediately to all the techniques explained! This book is a gem for those who love COLOR! The tutorials are bright and beautiful, step by step, Mark Christopher is a wonderful teacher and the basics are really all you need to create beautiful works of art that will stand the test of time.If for nothing else, buy the book for the beauty of it. :)Great that it's in hardcover too, I know I will be holding onto this one for a long time! Not enough starts on the review to give it all I wanted to! Awesome book and I would never have known about it had I not read Painter Magazine.. so thumbs up to a recommendation!Thank you Mark Weber!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The only color mixing book you'll ever need
I airbrush and oil paint and have bought several different color guides and this is the only one I will ever need. The colors in it as references are easily available in most brands of paints and the mixing ratios are easy to understand and transfer to any quantity you need. You can't go wrong when it tells you to mix 1 part naphthol crimson to 1 part cerulean blue to get a brick red...the only other thing I would consider getting with this book is the Magic Palette guide to hang on the wall where I paint.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Best Friend!
I was pleasantly surprised by the Color Mixing Bible, it had more to it than I could have hoped for! I bought it to help ME make better choices in the acrylics I was about to invest in but, as a drawing and painting teacher, I have used it to help students in preliminary exercises with pastels, my advanced students have used it for setting up their pencil "palette" before starting assignments, my graphics students, who are into cartooning, have snatched it for the ink mixing section, the "subject mix" section has helped some of my Fundamentals students understand what to look for in making a formal analysis of artists' palettes, the book is new and already lovingly abused! Ian Sidaway has provided clear and consistent visual tables of results that have helped me and my students make better choices the first time with fewer of the unhappy accidents that occur in the haste of classrooms and deadlines. I particularly enjoy the "Watchpoints" that offer tips and caveats about certain pigments and their behaviors.
I strongly recommend the Color Mixing Bible to artists that work in different media; sometimes we get stuck mixing in a medium that just doesn't respond as expected because we are less practiced in it. This book allows the opportunity to make visual comparisons between media as we work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bunch of Charts
This book is just a bunch of color charts showing how one color mixes with all the others such as how cadmium orange mixes with particular reds, yellows, blues etc.It is great for traditional media such as oils, watercolors, and ink, but is completely useless for digital art.I like the book, and it's great if you do oil painting and are looking for just the right color, but I think it's a bit on the pricey side.Still if you don't want to waste a lot of money buying colors you don't need this is a good book to buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone learning art.
The introduction of this book taught me more on colourmixing than three terms of adult education classes at my local high school. Fantastic and informative, with a useful layout. I would recommend this book to everyone with artistic inclinations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Guide for Colors
This book will makes your life easier by guiding you in choosing the right ccolor combinations to reach the desired hue.

It is simple to use and accurate; don't waste your art supplies by mixing the wrong colors.Great for people like me, afraid of color. ... Read more
