The book was what I need, but the excessive writing and highlighting was a bit much for the price. Every page seems to be in tact and somewhat readable. 4-0 out of 5 stars A really good reference tool for school owners/operators
This book is a very nice collection of FAQ's with answers from one of the best martial arts educators out there.

If you are thinking of opening a school or just starting a martial arts program of any kind, I would suggest you read this book FIRST!Then keep it handy!

Glad I purchased it!One of the books I refer back to most!

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting read full of useful hints
I bought this book many months ago (mid 2008) and browsed through it in preparation for opening my own dojo in 2009. As that time has come closer I have started reading this book in greater depth and have found a wealth of ideas that I would never have come up with, and I should point out that I have a double degree in human resource management and marketing, a minor in business law and a masters in accounting. Most interesting is that it is in the business side of this book that I found the most useful information - small, practical hints on student retention, information gathering, public relations and marketing made this book worthwhile for me.

I've only given it four stars however because the areas to do with any form of finance such as setting fee rates and determining student numbers are overly simplistic and therefore of limited benefit - if this area was fleshed out and a section on developing a business plan as it relates to the martial arts business was included in detail, then this book would be perfect.

Overall I recommend it to anyone who is in the process of setting up their own school, and it will be of great benefit to those who are looking for ideas to improve the running of their school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I have already another excellent book (Ultimate fitness) and some DVD's of Master Sang H. Kim. He is a great teacher and likes to share his martial arts wisdom.
This book covers almost every single aspect about running a martial arts business, from teaching to marketing.
A serious book to serious martial arts teachers.
I strongly advice you to get one.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview
I'd recommend this without reservation to any martial arts instructor, part-time or full time. Or any instructor. It provides excellent simple advice for dealing with simple difficult issues such as ADD kids or other attention problems in class. It provides straightforward and concise guides for organizing a class or a business. I've had it only a few weeks, and expect to be mining its depths for years. I doubt if I'll ever sit down to read it straight through, but I've found that every time I've gone to it for any specific issue, or just to open and browse for ten or fifteen minutes, I've learned something.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Instructions on how to run a great martial arts school.
This book has a wealth of information about running a dojang (dojo). From dealing with the difficult student to organizing a class with specific drills, this book covers everything a good instructor needs to at least think through.I particularly liked the aspects of running a business; when to advertise, how to run a radio spot, what to do when enrollment drops, when to expand and when not to.If your business is teaching martial arts, you must have this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking art book.
Wow this book is a fan's dream come true! HUGE high quality prints, amazing color reproduction and very detailed print job. This is T_H_E Yoshitaka Amano artbook to own (and i own about a dozen!).

In fact, the book is so well done that i actually want to buy a second one used or something to gut it and frame some of the prints - they are that amazing, find affordable & well reproduced Amano prints can be very hard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Okay, Wow!
This book is just beautiful. The art, the design, everything about this screams to be touched and looked at fondly. This is how a book about art should be done. This is my Vampire Hunter D centerpiece, and sits proudly amidst figures, novels and the DVDs and other "D" collectibles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vampire Hunter D Art Book
If your a Vampire Hunter D fan, I say get this book. Goes nicely to any collection in that series. tons of pages on art work done over the years from the artist. I say a must buy ^^

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting execution
As for content and art this book is fabulous, but I was kind of expecting more prints. The layout they chose for the book is interesting and I don't really find it necessary other than for a wow factor. To me it really didn't add anything to the prints inside, but to be fair, it didn't necessarily take away either. This book defiantly features what I enjoy best about Amano's art.

A good buy for Amano fans or any artist interested in graphic art and/or inking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
I bought this book for my boyfriend, who is a huge fan of the series. I cannot speak from my own experience with it, but from his near fainting reaction upon receiving it, I would say it is definitely worth the money. From what he has said, the artwork is incredible. I would recommend it for any fan of the series or the art. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Scrap file on steroids
Old time storyboard and comp artists - as well as many illustrators - used to maintain a "scrap file." In case that term is new to you, it meant that they collected photos, tear-sheets and clipped-out pages of magazines to use as reference for illustration assignments. Few artist's can draw a convincing, realistic, image straight from their imagination, so having a handy reference saves much time and frustration. Of course you can stage your own photos as did many famous illustrators, but doing so takes time. Fortunately, Buddy Scalera and his intrepid crew took the time and the result is a stellar collection of carefully staged, and professionally lighted images. Please note that these are not static poses, but artfully composed action images of models leaping, wrestling, fighting, and using weapons. To make the fighting scenes accurate Mr Scalera retained a martial-arts expert. As you might guess, the target audience for book is mainly people drawing for action-oriented comic books or storyboard artists. I have three of these volumes: the other two are Men and Boys, and People and Poses. One final note, these are tasteful books. Mr Scalera had all of the models post in tight-fitting workout clothes. "Tight-fitting" not to please the voyeurs, but to allow the illustrators to capture as much of the musculature as decorum would permit.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another great reference book
This is a great book for comic artists and it includes sections by many great artists including the brilliant Terry Moore

4-0 out of 5 stars Dynamic poses, but lacks range of age
This is a really useful resource for the creative and dynamic posing. There are also plenty of tips for getting the most from the pictures, including how to see it from different perspectives and using the right tools to achieve your desired outcome. I only wish they had used different body types and a wider age range. There are only 4 models used in the book, starting at 16 and ending with a lady in her early thirties, all with similar average body types. Overall, it's a useful addition to any artist's books of reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent reference
a breath of fresh air to those of us who are tired of stagnant anatomy reference books. so few references have as many dynamic poses, in addition to costume and props. a great addition to any reference collection.

Product Description
An industrial accountant with an accountant's dedication to accuracy, Harold E. Meyer is also a master of precise, clear writing. In his latest book on how to express yourself in a variety of settings, for a variety of purposes, he proves that easily understood writing can be learned. He shows how to use ordinary English to produce clear messages of any kind. Meyer's approach is informal, pleasant, and presented in brief sections, each with its point clearly expressed. His book is well illustrated throughout by amusing--often startling--examples of good writing and bad writing, and what the results can be from both. A remarkable, business-oriented guide for people at all levels and in all capacities in today's organizations--where the ways in which ideas are expressed are at least as important as the ideas themselves. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd bought this book ages ago
I love the way the book is organized with the different animals grouped together and the different artist interpretations and mediums. Very helpful. I also loved the section on the paws, eyes mouth etc of different animals. Such a great reference.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Big Disappointment
I have a lot of good books on painting and drawing animals, and I found this book to be very disappointing.

It's very superficial and lacking in many respects. For instance, it would have been helpful if the reference photos used by the artists had been included with some instruction on how to copy and transfer the drawing to the support. Some close ups of the step by steps would also be more useful as well as adding more in depth step by steps. Some of them were very brief, and the photos so small that it was hard to tell any progress.

The book is also poorly organized, with detailed instructions on painting parts of the dog or cat way at the end instead of up front. There is also no mention of anatomy which is so important to portraying a cat or dog accurately. A comparison of the skeletal structures, pointing out the differences, would have been enlightening for newbies to painting dogs and cats.

The book would have been better if it had contained fewer artists, leaving out the ones whose artwork was at best mediocre. If more examples had been done by Jean Filler Scott or Cindy Agan, the book would have benefitted from their accomplished paintings.

The watercolor examples were so loosely done as to border on sloppy. There are so many excellent canine and feline artists around that better artists could have been found to cover this medium.

If I hadn't bought this book on sale, I would be returning it. Look for a better, more comprehensive book, no matter what your skill level is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book
This is a wonderful book that provides a good reference and inspiration for any animal artist. The book is not for teaching how to paint but toshowcase a variety of unique styles and techniques developed by accomplished artists. I consider this book a great addition to my art book library.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good overview book
This is a spiral bound book which I love. Any art related book with a spiral binding gets the first star for free.

There are many fine animal works in this art book; some are better than others. Unlike the rest of the world I'm not a great fan of watercolor but there are exceptions. I love Stephen Quiller's watercolor work and some others as well. But I digress.

The book is a compilation of different artists which is, to me, never a strong powerful teaching method. I know, I know, it gives the student a good cross section of what's out there. This method always leaves me wanting when I reach the last page.

Good art is in the eye of the beholder. I've read that everyone is an artist. That may or may not be true but everyone is not a good graphic artist for sure. I'll leave that thought where it is.

After viewing the book I decided it was not for me and gave it as a gift. Possibly another artist will love it and think it the best thing since sliced bread- I don't know.

I guess I'm just getting cranky and picky in my old age. Forgive me if I don't make a recommendation to buy this book or not. Not much help I know; sorry.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book
This book was an impulse buy, since I am doing some painting from my animal photographs.

When it arrived I was very pleased to see that it is very worthwhile - there are many examples of different breeds of dogs and cats, with several different styles of painting, from oils and acrylic to watercolors.

The sketches are nicely done, with lots of detail about both technique and general composition as well as examples of eyes, fur, etc.Definitely worth the money and a keeper. ... Read more

Product Description
This text presents an overview of the most influential and best-loved American artists and their works. It covers three centuries, ranging from Puritan portraits and the American Impressionists through to the videos and digital works of today's conceptual artists. The book is shown in an A-Z format, and seeks to encourage readers to contemplate the connections between art, American history and popular culture. Each artist is represented by a colour plate of a significant work, accompanied by text placing the artist in the context of contemporary movements and preceding traditions. The book also includes a glossary of artistic terms and movements, and a directory of museums and public collections across the United States and abroad with holdings of American art.Amazon.com Review
Accessibility is the code word for Phaidon's new 500-page dictionary of American art. The book values images over words, and its longest text is the introduction, which is printed in large, bold face and hardly fills one page. But it does describe the book's mission well: "Each artist is represented by a full-page color plate of a significant work, accompanied by an informative and engaging text that places the artist in the context of contemporary movements and preceding traditions...."--concise and informative. By arranging the artists alphabetically, the editors set up some odd and amusing juxtapositions. For example, the suited subject of an Alice Neel painting appears to speak and gesticulate excitedly about the overstacked cornucopia of Louise Nevelson's crates found on the opposing page. The caption over each work includes four artists' names in bold print that function as hyperlinks of a sort, allowing readers to skip, for example, from Willem de Kooning's Woman I to Jean Michel Basquiat's Skull to Alfred Maurer's cubist-like painting Woman with Curlers. This way, with each visit to the American Art Book, readers can discover and follow countless narratives throughout the three centuries of American art.

Filled with large, expertly reproduced images, The American Art Book is, like its cousins The Photo Book and The 20th Century Art Book, a high-quality and surprisingly inexpensive volume that would be a worthy addition to any art lover's library. --Loren E. Baldwin ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing
This book has occupied the center of my kitchen table since I received it.I find myself drawn to it at all times of the day and night. The large format pictures are beautifully reproduced, the accompanying text is informative yet concise and the links to other artists provide a fascinating insight into American art movements. I am astonished at the range and variety of American art and feel quite ...patriotic!

4-0 out of 5 stars Where's Paul Wonner?
I realize it's difficult to include everyone, but I really miss him, especially his gouache figurative work. This is a very nice (and big) collection. The prints are good quality and the design doesn't detractfrom the pictures. It's especially nice to see 20th century American artscattered in with all the preceding artists. Another really good collectionis "Icons of Art: the 20th Century." I don't think Paul Wonner'sin that one either. How come?

5-0 out of 5 stars Art for Everyone
The American Art Book is an incredible compilation of fantastic art.It is accessible to artists and anyone who can appreciate art. The text which accompanies each piece is wonderfully written and provides detail withoutbeing too technical. It feels like the artist is sitting with you andtelling you all of the interesting things about the work.

I love that Ican just pick up the book and always find something I haven't seen before.Jay Tobler has done a wonderful job choosing interesting and unique artfrom all genres and providing informative and interesting text.

2-0 out of 5 stars Big pictures, little content
The representations are big and beautiful, but the text accompanying each image started sounding repetitive after a few dozen pages. Also, the choices from each artists oeuvre could be argued indefinitely, I suppose, but it seems to me if you have space for only one image, it should be theirbest work, (i.e. Chamberlain's "nanoweap"?, Hopper's"automat"? Etc., etc., eesh)

All in all, it left meuninspired.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent way to relax
I am not an art critic or claim to have any expertise in art but I do find The American Art Book by Jay Tobler an excellent way to relax and view the world of art in compleley different setting. The compilation of artists isvery complete and provides an outstanding cross section of artists withinour american culture. As I read the book I can't help but think that eachartist sat down with Jay and described to him in the artists words what thepiece meant to them. The candor and symmetry of the writings are spendidand truly allow you to understand and relate to, not just the art work butalso the artist. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Needed for a class...
This was an older edition, but it is good shape and arrived without any issues. The teacher even suggested looking for an older edition to save us money. This fit the bill. Thank you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but needs some more editing and better visuals
La Plante's text is able to give you a good feel for the artistic culture of India, China, and Japan over the past several millennia, which is an immense task that he does well. This book, however, has pretty disappointing flaws.

Reviewers of this book have alrady excoriated it for lousy pictures, and while this does not destroy the book's good value, these complaints are valid. The picture of Mohenjo-Daro's "High Priest" statue is heavily shadowed, and many of the black-and-white photos simply do not do justice to the material. Even if the publisher refused to suck it up and splurge on more color, shots with a better layout and lighting would do wonders.

Another gripe is more technical, but could really confuse someone who is not familiar with Chinese names. La Plante, as a preface to his section on China, notes that he uses the Pinyin system of transcribing Chinese sounds into the Roman alphabet. For the most part, yes, he does use Pinyin, but he isn't entirely consistent. The great historian of China, Sima Qian, is spelled "Sima Chien", where "Sima" is in pinyin but "Chien" uses another transcription system. There are several other similar glitches. It's a silly mistake to make, and could throw off a student who is probably already intimidated by Chinese pronunciations.

The book does an excellent job of teaching you about different civilizations' artwork, especially considering the immensity of the cultures that are discussed and the relative thinness of the book--I just wish that some of these quirks would get ironed in the next editions, because then this book would really shine.

3-0 out of 5 stars Has potential, but...
This has the potential to be a much-needed alternative to the classic introduction to Asian art by Lee, but the text is quite sketchy - it almost seems a write-up of LaPlante's lecture notes - and the illustrations are dreadful, certainly not anywhere close to the standards of contemporary art publishing. There are surprising gaps; there is no mention of Tori Busshi as the sculptor of the Shaka Triad at Horyu-ji, for example. Some line drawings are gawd-awful.With better editing and good pictures, this would be an excellent text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Alternative to Sherman Lee
This text offers a basic survey of Asian Art history. Unlike A History of Far Eastern Art, by Sherman Lee, which is disproportionately weighted towards Chinese painting, La Planteis careful to balance between the three major art historical traditions of Asia (India, China, Japan). The author also covers developments in contemporary Asian art, as well as often neglected Islamic traditions in India. unfortunately, the book is not lavishly illustrated, but this is reflected in the reduced price, which makes the book more affordable for many students.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but where are the pictures?
La Plante gives a great historical context to the art he describes. This helps to make the subject of Asian Art accessible and alive for the western reader. However, there is a surprising lack of visual images, consideringthe book's art-related content. And, most of the images are smallblack-and-whites.There are only a few select color photos. This makes ithard for the reader to fully appreciate and enjoy this subject. The bookis organized chronologically by country and covers India, China, and Japan. Painting, architecture, sculpture, and ceramics are the main types of artdiscussed.La Plante defines obscure terminology at the end of eachchapter, which is helpful.Altogether, a fine read for contextualinformation, best if paired with a good source of visual images of artsfrom ancient Asia. ... Product Description
Collaborative, ephemeral, self-reflective, multidisciplinary--the work generated by the rapid series of experimental artistic movements that energized the public sphere in postwar Japan was anything but private, static, or expected, despite the enduring engagement of Japanese artists with Western modernism. For two decades, a small but progressive group of visual artists, musicians, dancers, theater performers, and writers variously confronted the fraught legacy of World War II in Japan, which included occupation by a foreign power, growing economic inequality, and the clash between repressive social mores and an increasingly industrialized, urban, and consumer-oriented culture. Art, Anti-Art, Non-Art offers an introduction to this highly charged and innovative era in Japanese artistic practice.
Published in conjunction with an exhibition on view at the Getty Research Institute from March 6 to June 3, 2007, this catalogue features objects, books, periodicals, photographs, and other ephemera created by artists associated with Experimental Workshop, Gutai, High Red Centre, Neo Dada, Provoke, Tokyo Fluxus, and VIVO, among others. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The TKD Bible !
A fantastic read and reference point.
Indispensible parent's handbook in providing extra coaching for youngsters.
An invaluable tool in supplementing formal training.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must....
....for those of us who need to refer to our poomsae quickly. Tedeshci's texts (taekwondo and hapkido) would be a lot better, but they're big and are rather expensive.
Park and Park gives you a lot of bang for your buck, and the book can easily be stored in your briefcase, gymbag, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for beginner and intermediate TKDers
Overall great reference guide to starting and intermediate tae kwon do students. Lists the applications and effectiveness of all most aspects of TKD with slideshow pictures to demonstrate correctly. Of course, don't think you can learn the whole martial art from a book; you will need to accommodate by training with an instructor.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Reference Guide to Tae kwon do I have seen to date
This book is above par.I am a soldier deployed in Iraq and I purchased this book to continue my study while on deployment. It has accurate information and pictures to explain everything from the basics, to advanced level forms, and top notch sparring techniques.A great purchase.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good reference
It is a good starting reference for those beginning about the sport. The pictures of the poomse are helpful but nothing takes the place of good instruction.I found it hard to rely on the pictures to do the forms.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, Bad Timing
This is probably a good book. It does offer a lot of insight into self-reflection for public presentation & the entire grant(ing) process. Unfortunately, early on the book points out that grants are tied wholly to the stock market. As that's tanked recently (& will probably continue to suffer through at LEAST this year,) it seems I bought this book at precisely the worst moment in history. Hopefully it will be more helpful once the economy turns around...someday.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guide to Getting Arts Grants- The First Review
I bought this book because of its title.Other books on the market discussed getting grants in general, and it was difficult to find one that focused solely on ART funding.

I liked the fact that the writer has been active in the grant field for three decades. The information in the text proved the author's knowledge of the field. The basics alone are helpful, including such questions as:

. why and how giving-organizations exist, and how they think;
. what types exist and which one is best for a particular entity to seek;
. whom firms fund and why;
. how to get grants and the application process;
. how to find funding opportunities, and much more.

"The Guide to Getting Arts Grants" is a true Insider's Guide to creative funding.

Product Description
The Dictionary of Christian Art, now rebranded in the best-selling Oxford Paperback Reference series, is a unique and fascinating exploration of the art and architecture that has been influenced and inspired by biblical stories and Christian history and beliefs. The Dictionary combines general essays on the periods and styles important in the history of Christian art with lots of shorter entries that describe specific works, artists, themes, and visual images, and which give the reader practical guidance on where in Europe to locate the works described.Among the many features of this dictionary are: detailed essays on periods and styles in art and architecture, including Byzantine, Renaissance, Baroque; general background to the Old and New Testaments, and to Christian tradition and beliefs; forms of art influenced by Christianity, such as illuminated manuscripts, stained glass; artists and architects and their works, for example Fra Angelico, Donatello, Pugin, and many others; and places and buildings, including Assisi, Roma, St Paul's, the Sistine Chapel. There are also descriptions and explanations of features of Christian churches, significant saints, popes, saints, and rulers, and a glossary of Architectural Terms and detailed bibliography. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars An Artless Art Book
This book has covers a number of topics, but each entry is generally short. There are no photographs or illustrations in this book. Therefore, this book has limited value. For a person who just wants to know the meaning of words it may suffice. For the person who wants detail and visual clarification, there will be disappointment. I would never have purchased this book if I had seen it first. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Art Synectics
Art Synectics is one of the most useful and thought provoking books I have ever encountered. I was introduced to it as a young art instructor and have integrated the lessons and concepts into my classroom curriculum for years. Now a master teacher I bought another copy of the book to give to my student teacher so that he may benefit from the author's creativity and utilize it in his classroom. I highly recommend it and encourage everyone from artist to student to buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource...
This excellent book illustrates beautifully the analogy building aspect of the powerful Synectic problem solving process, from the standpoint of art & sketching. It never cease to amaze me, as I often turn to the many pages for creative inspiration. It is also packed with easy to follow and fun exercises.

It is among my first few books on understanding the Synectic process. Synectics was created by William J J Gordon & George Prince in the 50's or 60's. The process can be applied in both the educational as well as business settings. In fact, Gordon had created many exercise books for use in the schools.Unfortunately many of his good stuff in this respect are now out of print and hard to get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Resource!
If you teach art, make art, or just like to try new things, get this book any way you can!Ideas are simple and short-- no reading and reading just to find the procedures- no long-winded justifications. There are several activities on each page which serve for a one or more class periods project or as a jumping-off place for your own ideas. I think you'll turn to this book again and again, as there is just too much to digest in a year of classes. The only drawback is the lack of visual examples. There are no color photos and, often, the examples are from professonal artists and may not match the project exactly. As a source of inspiration, though, this has no equal (unless it's Roukes' other book, Design Synectics, for which I long!). There is even a spinner to generate ideas! If you have trouble finding this one, try saxarts.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
Fine Art Publicity has some very good ideas about marketing and publicity. We just opened an art gallery, and have already had a few articles published in local newspapers thanks to the suggestions in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book will be a great help
I am writing a business plan to open an art gallery.
Even though I already know how to market service businesses,
I need to learn a lot about marketing an art gallery.I
found a trove of very good advice in this book.I appreciate
the easy layout and readability also.I expect anyone
with an art business can find ideas here.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'must' for aspiring artists and gallery owners alike
The majority of art career guides come from either career counselors or artists themselves, so it's refreshing to note that Fine Art Publicity: The Complete Guide For Galleries And Artists, appearing in its second updated edition, is written by an industry publicist backed by the knowledge of her profession. Galleries and artists receive the basics of marketing to the art community; from researching a media list for both local and national contacts to locating businesses connected to the arts, and gathering a library of samples for targeted publicity contacts. Simply an outstanding reference; a 'must' for aspiring artists and gallery owners alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is great
I dont usually write reviews, but I completely disagree with the bad review on here. This is an incredibly useful book for art galleries.I can't express how helpful this book has been to me.This is a guide for galleries not artists, so maybe that's why the last reader had issues.

1-0 out of 5 stars Search Elsewhere
I buy alot of books but I have never before seen a book written for an adult audience spread so thinly over so many pages.I suppose this was done to try to create the illusion of there being more information here than there really is.What little useful information this book contians seems to be repeated over and over.I would guess again to fill pages. I feel there is virtually no practical information here for an artist and very little for a gallery.I usually don't have an interest in writing book reviews but I was so disappointed in this book that I wanted to alert others to search elsewhere for useful information. ...
