5-0 out of 5 stars Chocked full of precise and good info.
A lot to chew on - a very good balance between how to address the business and psychological aspects of marrying art with business!

4-0 out of 5 stars the nitty gritty
I have just started reading this book. The print quality is poor but the content is good.
I do not intend to be an art consultant, I am a working artist, but I like to learn as much as I can about the art market and surviving as an artist.

At this point I have read the first few chapters and am very impressed with the intelligent analysis of sectors in the art consulting (marketing) field put forward by this author. The text offers a description of the types of client involved in each sector, their different expectations and the different types and levels of knowledge, skill and effort required to service them.

I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am very glad this book exists!
Not many words to say. It is an excellent book. Many thanks to Susan Abbott for sharing her knowledge.

4-0 out of 5 stars MUST READ
Great book. This book has helped me alot. Susan Abbott really breaks the business art consulting down with samples of letters and proposals to clients, telling you when to phone and when to write. This book is not just for art consultants but for anyone who is involved in the business side of art i.e. galleries and artists. I definitely reccomend this book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor at best
This guide is HUGELY disappointing. It leaves out major players in the performing arts and the information on which programs universities have (BA, BFA, etc.) is incredibly inaccurate. It may be the only guide out there, but if you use it beware, the info is very misleading.....

Product Description
Named one of the best art books of 2008 by The New York Times and The Sunday Times [London]: “An indelible portrait of a peculiar society.”—VogueThe art market has been booming. Museum attendance is surging. More people than ever call themselves artists. Contemporary art has become a mass entertainment, a luxury good, a job description, and, for some, a kind of alternative religion.

In a series of beautifully paced narratives, Sarah Thornton investigates the drama of a Christie's auction, the workings in Takashi Murakami's studios, the elite at the Basel Art Fair, the eccentricities of Artforum magazine, the competition behind an important art prize, life in a notorious art-school seminar, and the wonderland of the Venice Biennale. She reveals the new dynamics of creativity, taste, status, money, and the search for meaning in life. A judicious and juicy account of the institutions that have the power to shape art history, based on hundreds of interviews with high-profile players, Thornton's entertaining ethnography will change the way you look at contemporary culture. 8 illustrations ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the art world and its components

This smartly written book presents the players in the art world of today with clarity, humor, and a genuine love of art in its many forms.

3-0 out of 5 stars For the "waiting for plane to take off" down time
I appreciated and enjoyed the way Ms. Thornton divided the book into neat, categorized chapters. But while the subject matter was interesting, her writing style was not a very effective suitor and didn't capture me as I had hoped. Needless to say, writing style is based on preference. I definitely appreciated that Seven Days got me through the lulls of airport waiting, but if there's another book on your "to-read" list, put this book in a slot below.

I've been reading several art magazines for a few decades and this book tied together a lot of loose pieces for me. I didn't know the head of this auction house was the best friend of the owner of that gallery. I didn't know this artist trained at that school and I especially didn't know how art was discussed at that school.
I feel like a rich friend took me all around and introduced me to the "inner circle," where I made new friends. It was fun (and informative) to "be on the inside" for a time. Highly recommended. I will go back to reality now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great insight and very enjoyable read
I'm only half way through this book, and I already I'm a big fan. Sarah Thornton's book not only provides great insight into the world of fine art (the auctions, the galleries, the collectors, the art schools and the artists' studios), but it is a very enjoyable read. Fascinating and funny. I'm going to recommend this book to a lot of my friends.

3-0 out of 5 stars $$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Seven Days in the Art World is all about the most powerful elites in the art world. Most people affiliated with art today are not a part of this world, and many don't want to be.Too bad, you don't count.

Sarah just knows writing about the rich art world will sell the most books, because everyone mentioned within in will buy a few hundred copies to give to all their friends.

Do we really need to put more emphasis on the people with all the money? They already get the most attention.

By the last chapter, Sarah has become a part of their world. She loses the "outsider" style of analysis and resorts to name dropping most of the chapter.

Lastly, she is not nearly as self-reflexive as she should be.She does little to take into account her subjectivity as part of her writing process.

Nevertheless, it is an interesting book to read, just please don't try to become a part of this world, and realize there exists far more interesting art production and discourse than what is depicted in this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's about time.
Finally! A book on selling your art that doesn't spend 200 pages stating the obvious in four part harmony.
THIS book is worth reading.

2-0 out of 5 stars Recycled basic information
If you've ever read a book by Daniel Grant, you've read this exact information in almost the exact words. If you've read two books by Daniel Grant, you've read it twice.

I am extremely disappointed in this book. I dared hope it might not contain just the exact same information, in the exact same words, as his previous "two" books that were one book with one title.

Daniel Grant has only ever written one book, which wasn't really all that informative or helpful. Then he rearranges paragraphs, puts on new chapter titles, calls it something else, and sells it again.

This is a good topic. It is a terrible book. However, if you're going to read a version of Daniel Grant's book anyway, this one is no worse than any of the others.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wrong title.
Author, instead of providing reader with variety of innovative and/or impressive methods selling art WITHOUT galleries, on almost every page gives us proof, that: 1) he have chosen wrong title for his book and 2) there is no better way to sell art than WITH galleries.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Terribly Enlightening
Although there may be some good information in this book for others, there wasn't much in it that I can make use of.
The author touches on various subjects, giving no real insight or information on any of them. For example, he mentions things like web marketing, signature letters, the artist's statement, etc., but then includes quotes from art professionals (critics, gallery owners, etc.,)some saying they consider them important, good or positive & some saying the exact opposite. So what did I learn? It's all a crap shoot with potentially huge financial risk. I already knew that.
Most of the various marketing opportunities discussed I was either already aware of or I'd already thought of.
In addition, although this book was published only 2 years ago, a fair number of the internet links provided are either defunct or just wrong.
There are also quite a few typos throughout, resulting in sentences that make little or no sense. Proofreading appears to have been done by Word spell check rather than a living human being.

5-0 out of 5 stars Selling Art Without Galleries
This book more than met my expectations.I did not realize how valuable the information could be to me until I opened it up and started reading--not from the first chapter but one that caught my eye.I spent the first few days reading every chance I got.It is packed with useful information. It is a good read for artists. ... Read more

Product Description
The 1906 earthquake in San Francisco triggered not only a devastating three-day fire, but also a tuberculosis epidemic, a result of the ash- and dust-filled air. Working women were disproportionately afflicted with the disease. Fortunately, many of them regained their health---and cultivated new artistic skills---at a unique treatment center across the Golden Gate.

The Arequipa Sanatorium, located in rural Marin County, was founded in 1911 by Dr. Philip King Brown. Influenced by the philosophy of the Arts and Crafts movement, he sought to provide his working-class female patients not only with the medical care and rest that they needed, but also with the opportunity to engage in a creative pursuit that was both therapeutic and marketable. Brown settled upon pottery.

Through vintage photographs, technical illustrations, and beautiful full-color reproductions, Fired by Ideals: Arequipa Pottery and the Arts and Crafts Movement tells the story of this progressive institution and analyzes the distinctive pottery created there. With their simple charm and strong ties to the natural environment, Arequipa wares remain treasured examples of American art pottery and the Arts and Crafts era. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Arts & Crafts Book
I really enjoyed this book. I am a huge Arts & Crafts fan, and this was well-researched and both esoteric and interesting to those of us who love this art form

5-0 out of 5 stars Filled with thoughtful and meaningful wares
Collaboratively presented by Suzanne Raizerman (Imogene Gieling Curator of Crafts and Decorative Arts, Oakland Museum, California), Lynn Downey (History, Levi Strauss and Company); and John Taki (California College of Arts and Crafts and President, Leslie Ceramic Supply Company, Berkeley, California) Fired By Ideals: Arequipa Pottery And The Arts & Crafts Movement is a truly impressive, 136 page artbook showcasing a unique selection of historical ceramic pottery sculpture. In 1911, after the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco triggered a tuberculosis epidemic, a special treatment center called the Arequipa Sanatorium was founded for working women afflicted by the disease. Pottery became daily practice, both as an outlet for creativity/healing and to create marketable wares. The most amazing samples of this fine pottery are displayed in full color in Fired By Ideals, along with descriptive captions and a narrated history of the Sanatorium that created them. A fascinating catalogue filled with thoughtful and meaningful wares, Fired By Ideals is a unique and enthusiastically recommended addition to personal, professional, academic, and community library arts and crafts reference collections.

Product Description
Approaches to the history of art are probably more varied - and more debated - than in any other branch of history, and a study of different historical approaches is becoming an increasingly important component of many academic courses. This anthology of art-historical writings from the Renaissance to the present day has a particular focus, for key texts have been chosen in which the authors themselves reflects on the nature of their subject and on their own methods of inquiry. Included are texts by Vasari, Winckelmann, Burckhardt, Wolfflin, Panofsky, Gombrich and Pollock, among others. The introduction gives a summary of art-historical methods, and each of the texts is accompanied by a brief commentary which places it in context and discusses the issues it raises. Also provided is a critical glossary of art-historical terms, a brief biography of each of the historians, and a select bibliography. ... Read more

Olu Oguibe, in the heart of darkness, 1993

It is an excellent anthology, but it lacks colour plate images. Since it is a book about methods in art historical practice, the focus is much more directed to looking at texts. Yet, there are a few black and white images printed in the book that provide examples of the works being discussed. However, I would forfeit my desire for colour plates in light of the affordable price (appx. $30 for almost 400 pages of quality reading) and its promise for longevity for being an oft-consulted book for a serious art historian.I am not sure why Fernie decided to omit the footnotes of the original essays, which makes this only a lead-in to the original texts.I would also like to see Fernie add more contemporary essays with subsequent editions, as the latest date of the essays included is 1993 (recent only in light of the 1995 publication date).

The theories shaping the widely varied practices of of art history are highly contested, often misunderstood, and a `hot topic' in many schools of academia.Eric Fernie has collected some of the most interesting writing, from the Renaissance to the contemporary, about methodology in the practice of art history, introducing each of the essays with a brief summary of its contents. Fernie's considerable ability to summarize and contextualize key points of dense texts in a thoughtful and accessible way makes the reader look forward to diving into this carefully laid out anthology of 27 classic texts about methodology in the arts (like Heinrich Wolfflin's 1915 "Principles of Art History" or Giorgio Vasari's 1568 "The Painter's Book").Also included in this book is a useful and critical glossary of terms, written by Fernie.Demonstrating the wide variety of approaches taken by serious scholars over the ages, Fernie illuminates the rhizomatic way in which the discourse of art historical practice has unfolded over time, sometimes following an evoluting line of developing thought, but sometimes showing how relatively `new' ideas appear and disappear into the folds of culture's eternal mutation.

Fernie is likely trying to reach academic readers instead of a popular audience, but more specifically, he is likely trying to reach post-undergraduate-level academics. This idea rests on the observation that the content of the essays are quite serious, as wellas being of the kind of historical overview that nonacademic, and even many undergrad students, in my opinion, might find difficult to put into perspective unless they have a solid background in both cultural and art history. This book is definitely not for everyone. Those seriously interested in art history, criticism, theory, the history of ideas, or research methodology would find this book most interesting.People who are looking for juicy images, coffee table classics, or simplified interpretations of classic art need not open this book, unless they want to challenge their understanding of how history, methods of enquiry, and the subjectivity of the self inform higher-level understanding of art and art history.

4-0 out of 5 stars A *Critical* Anthology
Fernie's book is indeed a little gem, a compilation of most of the major players and critical thinkers that shaped the discipline of Art History as we know it today. The format is user-friendly, with an excellent table of contents, select bibliography, and index. The glossary in the back provides definitions that are indispensable for beginners and masters alike. His intros are succinct; they provide a historical context, and distill most of the main points of each reading into a short, interesting, and easy to digest summary.

The selected texts provide the reader with a good definition of some of the historical and contemporary differences between different schools of Art History and Art Criticism. The methods provided in this book are applicable to any humanistic discipline. While not totally comprehensive, the material presented does give an excellent starting point for further excursions into art historical methodology.

That said, Fernie does allow some of his own biases and methodologies to colour some of his introductions, and the selections of representative texts. The critical thinking of his readers needs to be applied to these aspects of the book, as much as the texts presented. However, all in all this is an excellent "History of Art History". I reccomend this book highly to "students" (of any kind) interested in a higher understanding of art, art criticism, and historiography.

5-0 out of 5 stars A rare breed: a stimulating read
The prospect of a book filled with extracts from some of the greatest art criticism written may not fill every one with excitement, but when this is the book, it should. Eric Fernie has collected the major works of the most important art historians and critics, all translated in to English. With each he adds a slight biography and handy pointers as to what the aim of the writer was. It is true that these are just extracts (in some cases, like Goethe, it is the whole of the piece) but they give you a taste of the whole, without leaving you confused.

Apart from the actual writings, there isa very handy guide to "buzz" words and terminologies, as well as theories from the world of art and philosophy, so if you do get lost, you have a map to refer to. The format of the book is good too, being arranged in such away that it is almost a text or reference book: you have a well designed index which allows you to dip in and out with out getting bemused or frustrated.

This book is a good introduction to the world of art criticism. If you ever read reviews of artists or exhibition and get confused by the terms used or people mentioned, it is likely that a look and then read of this book will make everything clearer, or distract you so much that you forget. Though this group of works may appear boring at first, it is not because Fernie's mini-biographies and explainations make it all clear: bordom soon becomes interest when the fear of getting lost among the technical terms is taken away.

A good introduction to art history and criticism, and the more general world of philosophy.

1-0 out of 5 stars A great idea, but a disappointing book
I bought this book because I wanted an anthology of "the best," classic articles on a variety of fields and from a variety of critical viewpoints, hoping to use it for my introductory art history course.Butnot only could one quarrel with the choices here, but the articles areabridged almost to the point of incomprehensibility and the footnotes areleft out. This makes the collection unrepresentative of what it purportsto be about, and useless in the classroom.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fernie's Anthology is an Odd Compilation
The choices Fernie made in compiling his anthology often seem to make little sense. His Vasari excerpt, for example, is a mish-mosh of badly excerpted Lives and patched together methodology--not one complete, coherent excerpt.Further, as a scholarly tool, it is quite irritating that Fernie deletes the footnotes to all the texts save his own.In addition, his introductions to each piece are not very insightful nor are they stimulating. Unfortunately (and this is what saves the anthology from being a 1) it is the only introduction to various methodologies for the young art historian. For the interested amateur this is a good start (although note that there are many other interesting texts that are not included in the anthology--Pliny, for example). If I were a Professor, however, I would simply make a packet of materials for my students of more substantive excerpts WITH footnotes and without Fernie's summations. ... Read more

Product Description

This original and inspiring book offers clear and wide-ranging introduction to the arts of painting and sculpture, to the principal artistic print media, and to the visual arts of modernism and post-modernism. Covering the entire history of art, from Paleolithic cave painting to contemporary art, it provides foundational guidance to the basic character and techniques of the different art forms, to the various genres of painting in the western tradition, and to the techniques of sculpture as they have been practiced over several millenia and across a wide range of cultures. Throughout the book, Harrison discusses the relative priorities of aesthetic appreciation and historical inquiry, and of the importance of combining the two approaches. Written in a style that is at once graceful, engaging, and personal, as well as analytical and exact, this illuminating book offers an impassioned and timely defense of the importance and value of the first-hand encounter with works of art, whether in museums or in their original locations.

Designed to be useful and attractive to students and teachers of art, art history, and aesthetics, the book will appeal also to the interested general reader and to those visitors to museums and exhibitions who welcome guidance to the objects on display, and to the means of gaining the maximum pleasure and instruction from them.  The 250 color illustrations, each with generous, informative captions, include both well-known works and a host of less familiar examples from different cultures and periods.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Vol. 1 & 2
This is a good book but I think that 1 and 2 are much better. This one has great artist in it like the others but the eassys boring. But it does make me want to look at more art.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing really new....
So there's Big Names from the Eighties and Nineties... Yawn. Nothing truly new and fresh or The Art Of The New Century here. Out in the world there's already a ton of up and comers building on people like Koons and taking it further- where are they in this book?

Get this from the library and look at it for some Where Are They Now and How Much $$$ Are They Worth. Or even buy it to play the University Art School game. But mostly, this is a book behind the times based on the In Club structure that has dominated the art world since WWII. The Internet has exploded the In Club and so much truly interesting stuff is going on! And Taschen is just plain missing the boat on New Art. It's just the same old stuff over and over...

Best to put your money and your effort into finding out what's up in Japan, and has been for two decades. Go read Dali's predictions on the future of art and how his work would feed junk sold in shopping malls to philistines- and think about it. Our world is completely changed from twenty years ago in ways nobody ever imagined, and people really think the same old stuff from the same old establishment holds any new meaning? Come on!

I have the BFA/MFA/Art History education. I like my art with relevance to the world of today. None here. A book solely on Koons would have been the signpost to the future that's now.

4-0 out of 5 stars read the book as art news
it is easy to read and let me know many contemporary artists, read it as art newspaper.

Product Description

The Egyptian art world is the oldest and largest in the Arab Middle East. Its artists must reckon with the histories of ancient Egypt, European modernism, anti-colonial nationalism, and state socialism-all in the context of a growing neoliberal economy marked by American global dominance. At this crucial intersection of culture, politics, and economy, Egypt's art and artists provide unique insight into current struggles for cultural identity and sovereignty in the Middle East.

This book examines the heated cultural politics in today's Arab world, and tells how art-making has become an unexpectedly central part of that.It offers a lively analysis of the battles between artists, curators, and audiences over cultural authenticity, cultural policy, public art in a changing urban Egypt, and the new global marketing of Egyptian art.The art world it shows powerfully exemplifies how people in the Middle East reckon with global transformations that are changing how culture is made in societies with colonial and socialist pasts.

2-0 out of 5 stars Looking for an intro to Tantric practice? look elsewhere...
Just a warning to those of you who may be looking for an introduction into the actual practice of Tantra...

This book is part of the "World of Art" series. It is very academic in nature, and can be quite dry. I must say that it would probably be a great asset for someone studying art history or history of religion. It is just NOT by any means a "how-to" manual, or an easy read.As the previous reviewer stated, it does not concentrate on the sexual/spiritual aspects of tantra.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rawson delivers beauty where other books on Tantra fail.
It seems the term "tantric" has become a codeword for "kinky" in the titles and content of too many how-to books available to the Western reader.Perhaps this is because they focus almostexclusively on the titillating sexual rites and positions suggested byTantric practioners.By contrast, Rawson invites the reader to exploreinstead the subtle meanings, artistic values and philosophicalunderpinnings of the Tantric religion. Moreover, Rawson details theTantric fascination with death and mortality and its implications for ourunderstanding of God.This approach results in a more profoundunderstanding of the beauty and richness of the art and practices ofTantra, and gives us the proper perspective on--and perhaps a key toaccessing--the transcendent ecstasy sought by Tantric practioners.

Ifirst read this book as an undergraduate, at a time when I was eager tothrow off some of the Joycean "nets" of our western culture. Rawson showed me exactly where I should look for further inspiration.Ihave since found few books regarding Tantra that succeed so well inproviding a balanced and complete view of Tantric culture, in such asuccinct and finely illustrated volume. And do not misunderstand:this isnot a dry, academic accounting of some cultural curiosity. On thecontrary, Rawson communicates the vibrancy and vitality of the beliefs hedescribes.I found myself enthralled with this work, and Tantra ingeneral, because Tantra places such a high--and exciting--value on passion, sexual ecstasy, and transcendent experiences. An understanding of Tantramight be an ideal balm for the disillusioned Westerner looking to findsomething more than those answers available in the judeo-christian canon.Whether that be the case or no, this volume is an perfect place to startfor anyone interested in the art, practices, philosophy and beliefs ofTantra. And it is assuredly a better place to start than any book whosejacket promises some form of jump-start for your sex life--even if that iswhat you are seeking, after all. ... Product Description
Audience behavior began to shift dramatically in the mid 1990s. Since then, people have become more spontaneous in purchasing tickets and increasingly prefer selecting specific programs to attend rather than buying a subscription series. Arts attenders also expect more responsive customer service than ever before. Because of these and other factors, many audience development strategies that sustained nonprofit arts organizations in the past are no longer dependable and performing arts marketers face many new challenges in their efforts to build and retain their audiences. Arts organizations must learn how to be relevant to the changing lifestyles, needs, interests, and preferences of their current and potential audiences.

Arts Marketing Insights offers managers, board members, professors, and students of arts management the ideas and information they need to market effectively and efficiently to customers today and into the future. In this book, Joanne Scheff Bernstein helps readers to understand performing arts audiences, conduct research, and provide excellent customer service. She demonstrates that arts organizations can benefit by expanding the meaning of "valuable customer" to include single-ticket buyers. She offers guidance on long-range marketing planning and helps readers understand how to leverage the Internet and e-mail as powerful marketing channels. Bernstein presents vivid case studies and examples that illustrate her strategic principles in action from organizations large and small in the United States, Great Britain, Australia, and other countries. ... I purchased this book as one of many art marketing books I have acquired. Many of the other books have limited relevant information, so I expected to be able to pick a few tidbits from this book just like most of the others. But to my surprise, this book was packed with wonderful, relevant and well versed information for todays visual artist to utilize. In fact, this book is like a bible to me....I keep it highlighted and right at my desk to reference. I also purchased one and had it sent to my son, also a painter, so he would be able to have this wealth of information himself. I highly recommend anyone that is wanting to know the in's and out's of marketing your art online, to buy this book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh feeling guide to the fundamentals.
I have been pleasantly surprised by the text and breakdown of information in Fundamentals. The writing is logical, down to earth and seems fresh and exciting after years of reading very old reference books on the subject. It seems that they did not have a ton of money for the copyrights of noteworthy images from artists so they seem to have settled for lesser-known works by large artists. Some of this is interesting while some of it is frustrating.I believe that they have the ugliest Helen Frankenthaler painting I've ever seen printed in the book.I just hope the images don't turn off students to future research of these artists but who am I to judge?Overall, I am very pleased with the text and recommend it highly.

3-0 out of 5 stars The most boring art book ever
Term after term, definition after definition, that is how you read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is a damn good book
Although I've been involved with creating works of art all of my life, I wasn't able to call myself an artist until I started reading this book. There is so much knowledge within these pages, it is a must have for any potential artist or designer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, clear, and gripping
I bought this book for my "Art Appreciation" class in my second year of Graphic Design school, and I came out with appreciation for art and this book.
The 350 something pages are divided into chapters such as form, colour, texture and so on.. All of them are easy to read and extremely informative, best of all, it's full of pictures! Each page has almost a minimum of two images, making understanding and grasping the content extremely easy and enjoyable.
I loved the chapter Content & Style, as it delved into the art schools, explaining each school, the artists, the paintings etc
The book also has a cd that has info on colour, texture, line.. ( Art Fundementals!) with an interactive part that's fun to do, and was required by our Professor as homework.
I recommend this book to anyone, it's very important for studying art, but will also be a valuable book in any library or home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even after 10 years this book is still good.
I was fortunate enough to take an Art class in college that used the Seventh Edition of this text for the class. I still refer to it after about 10 years or so, and it's the only text for an "elective" that I still have after all of this time.

I use this text quite a bit in my photography work, since all of the elements (line, shape, value, etc) are as applicable to photography as it is to painting and other expressive forms.

I either own or have read through most other books on photographic composition, and none are as good as this book - consider it "classical training" if you want your work to move out of the "snapshooter" phase. ... Read more

Product Description
Fourteenth-century Europe was ravaged by famine, war, and, most devastatingly, the Black Plague. These widespread crises inspired a mystical religiosity, which emphasized both ecstatic joy and extreme suffering, producing emotionally charged and often graphic depictions of the Crucifixion and the martyrdoms of the saints.
While the great boom of cathedral building that had marked the previous century waned, cathedrals continued to serve as the centers of religious life and artistic creation. Wealthy patrons sponsored the production of elaborate altarpieces, as well as smaller panel paintings and religious statues for private devotional use. A growing literate elite created a demand for both richly decorated prayer books and volumes on secular topics. In Italy, the foremost Sienese painter, Duccio, sought to synthesize northern, Gothic influences with eastern, Byzantine ones, while the groundbreaking Florentine Giotto moved toward the depiction of three-dimensional figures in his wall paintings.
This third volume in the Art through the Centuries series highlights the most noteworthy concepts, geographic centers, and artists of this turbulent century. Important facts about the subjects under discussion are summarized in the margins of each entry, and salient features of the illustrated artworks are identified and discussed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Illustrated History of Art by David Piper
The paperback edition of this work was published in 2004 by
Bounty Books. The cover has a full color portrait of a woman
by Tissot. There are over 2000 illustrations-many in color.
Significant artistic developments from the Palaeolithic cave
paintings to Superrealism are depicted. This work has a
comprehensive picture specification list, index and special
interest section. There is a memorable Islamic work on the
Ascension of Mohammed in brilliant colors. Considerable collections of Far Eastern porcelains are depicted. Italian
Gothic sculpture is depicted fairly comprehensively. French
realists and early 20th century artists are depicted in full
color. There is an extensive section on artistic credits
and acknowledgments. The copyright has been enhanced since
1981 with printings in 1986, 1991, 2000 and 2004.
This is a perfect work for a wide constituency of art students,
cultural enthusiasts, editors, writers, museum curators and
the general public at large. It is reasonably priced and
highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Fabulous as far as Specific Artists Go
Since this book is out of print, I shall endeavor to provide you with information that Amazon would usually provide.

The physical book

The book is 10 x 12 x 1.5 inches and contains some 538 laminate pages. These exibit the main feature of the book, namely, a plethora of color images of paintings, statues and buildings of each respective time frame.

The content

The book, while endeavoring to provide the history of art, also in its attempts creates a wonderfully beautiful book. The pages are a pleasure to look at. The book begins its analysis of art in the ancient world, continues through to the Renaissance, and eventually ends with art in the 70's and 80's. The book provides a wealth of information about the popular styles through the respective time periods. However, I find that it lacks detail on some of the more profound individauls in more modern times. Namely individuals such as John Singer Sergent whom have become ever more popular since the time the book was published. So, the book is in essence dated in that respect, and therefore cannot present an accurate view of Art history at this time. ... Read more
