5-0 out of 5 stars **THE BOOK WAS IN GREAT SHAPE** very pleased!
I am very please with how little the book cost and how great of shape it was in! THANKS!

1-0 out of 5 stars winker ice sculpting melts
I was very disappointed in this book to say the least.

The lay out of the book begins with aesthetically placed references to water on several pages in a larger then normal font, tracking and kerning. Looking back I now see this as a way to stretch out the limited information.. On pg.16 there is "THE 12 SYSTEMATIC STEPS'." A total of 58 words fill the entire page.

After reading about the "Winker templates" on pages 14, 17 and then again on page 28 I felt as if I was trapped in an advertisement for the "Winkler templates" professional drawings. The templates are offered in a series of sets from 1 to 20. Each set has 10 templates for the cost of $75. Why would a person want to spend that much money for the security of having a "Winker Template" when they can buy an overhead projector, $150, enlarge any image they wish to what ever size they want?

Looking at the photos they seemed interesting until I got to the "Step by Step Illustrations" and saw howeach explanation said to first cut the block in half depth wise down to a base of 9". Since the blocks were stated as coming in sizes of 40"x20"x10" and 60"x20"x10" this first cut leaves you with 5" of depth for carving. Looking back at the photos of the ice carving they are all straight on. These are not true 3D carvings but a standing ba-relief with rounded corners and incised lines.

For the transfer of image from template to ice a 6 prong chipper is used. This straight alignment of prongs would make it difficult to transcribe a curve so why not get a pounce wheel from an art store or make your own wheel?

I have said enough. I think you understand how I feel about the money I spent on this book.

"...an extraordinary and still largely unknown art form: the tombstones of the Bogomils in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This heretical sect found refuge in the Balkans from Byzantine persecution and left there an overwhelming memorial: tens of thousands of tombstones in medieval graveyards, hidden away in deserted regions of Yugoslavia...."

"...an impressive array of stones in their original sites, demonstrating their great variety of decorative and figurative detail.... The originality, forcefulness, and spontaneity of genuine folk art, arising from a strong held, nonconformist religious belief."

Harcourt, Brace & World, undated but catalogued as 1963, cloth over hardback boards, 80 full page photographic illustrations in gravure (b&w.) Index of plates, map, 1 page Bibliography.

Two essays accompany the images: commenting on the origin, purpose, and meanings of the stones. Benac, a museum director, has devoted years on the research and classification of the sculptures. Bihalji-Merin is a critic "long been concerned with the relation between modern and primitive art."

5-0 out of 5 stars Hunter DVD
This DVD provides and excellent overview of Mr. Hunter's career. Many nice views of his work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine document on a great artist
I enjoyed this unique documentvery much as a fan of this wonderful art form. There is no instruction so don't buy it to take a lesson on the techniques of woodturning. You learn by contemplating and by letting yourself being inspired. Similar pieces are shown, which gave me an opportunity to appreciate the technique even more. This kind of videos have a tremendous interest when you consider that it takes much more than skills to create beauty. You will realise it deeply here thanks to Bernard Blain's interest in William Hunter.

1-0 out of 5 stars William Hunter Wood Sculpter (DVD)
I was very disappointed with my purchase of this DVD. It was largely my fault. I thought I was purchasing an instructional DVD on William Hunter's methods; instead the contents were endless interviews with Hunter about his philosophies and beliefs. If I could request a refund I would.

2-0 out of 5 stars Way too long if you're not already a fan
This video follows the artist through years of growth, showcases an incredible body of work, and gives some information about Hunter's process. But much of the work is similar; the ideas are similar; there is no drama here, no suspense.I hate to say it's boring, but really, I found myself checking the clock repeatedly while watching.A book of photos would have been as good, as long as the more repetitive pieces were eliminated.

3-0 out of 5 stars For art appreciation - not for instruction
This gentleman is a very talented artist. However, the DVD does not provide instruction (and maybe I should have realized this). I would have been happy if it even shared inspiration - but it did not for me.If you are a fan of this man's art and are interested in what inspires him, you won't be dissapointed. If you are looking for instruction or tips for turning - this is not the right DVD. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Thinking out of the square
This book has paid for itself already, even though I haven't yet read every page!I did learn how to design and carve jewellery in wax, but our syllabus only allowed (literally) enough time to barely scratch the surface of what is possible.Having set myself the task of carving a complex freeform mermaid, I had been struggling with her wild, fine, seaweedy hair. Thanks to Lawrence Kallenberg's book, several new items have joined my arsenal of wax carving tools - and they didn't cost a cent because I already had them. I just hadn't thought of using them on wax.And my head is spinning with new ideas for larger pieces using the sculpture techniques he suggests and describes so well.
This is a book that is meant to be read, and read thoroughly, rather than as a ready bench reference, and at times, it is slightly heavy going, but with that said, it's a well worth while addition to my library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent value
This is indeed and excellent book for anyone who is interested in wax carving, especially for those who are commencing work or hobby in lost wax casting.

It is informative and describes the various process in good detail, also providing projects in each chapter to assist the student to familiarize themselves in the carving technic.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book
i liked this book.it seems to be pretty complete and i learned enough from it to get started in jewelry making.imo it could have gone into more depth for centrifugal and vacuum casting.

1-0 out of 5 stars Modeling in wax for jewelry and sculpture
A bit disapointed by this book.I guess so many books now have great photos and are put together so well that an old fashioned style manual like this just doesn't inspire.I'm sure it's full of really useful stuff, but the format is so off putting that I can't be bothered to read it. A really good, modern book on wax carving with lots of interesting projects is long overdue..

5-0 out of 5 stars Modeling in Wax for Jewelry and Sculpture (Jewelry Crafts)
Informative book with many photographic examples of the instructions.
I enjoyed putting some of the methods into practice. Was well laid out with a broad choosing of projects.
A good intro to medium level instruction book. ... Read more

Product Description
The foliate head has been used as an ornament in the church since the fourth or fifth century, first as a `borrowed' motif or as an actual relic of antiquity, but gradually modified to suit particular decorative requirements and to express particular ideas. A tradition of meaning was established for it in the early middle ages, but as the fantasy was spun out and expanded in the thirteenth century its possibilities of meaning were explored no less imaginatively than its decorative possibilities. The Green Man carvings of the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth centuries have many different shades and slants of meaning: some are demons, and may well refer back to the idea of the Devil as radix omnium malorum, the root of all evil; some probably represent lost souls or spectres of the demon wood. Some are far more complex: the more realistic representation of both the human and the plant elements of the motif permits a deeper exploration of the ambivalent relationship between man and nature, and there are further allusions to man's own frail, fallen and concupiscent nature and to his brief life on earth. The imagery is often ambiguous, and a Green Man who at first glance may seem the very personification of springtime and `summer is i-comen in' may on closer inspection reveal himself as a deadly horror hidden in the leaves.Kathleen Basford's introduction surveys the history and development of the Green Man from prototypes in antique and early medieval ornament to the great period of Gothic architecture when foliate heads are frequent. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Green Man
I recently saw green men, on a trip to England, and thought I would learn a little about them and possibly try my hand at chip carving. The Green Man, by Kathleen Basford, was consice, well written, gave history, and many picture plates of dated works. A treasure!

5-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking Book for Green Man Enthusiasts
This books holds a reputation as one of the seminal publications in modern Green Man research, and rightly so. There is little copy in the book save a few pages in the beginning outlining the myth as understood at the time of publication, but where it speaks most loudly is in the photographs. Beautiful black and white pictures from all over Europe capture the broad variety of ways that the Green Man has been depicted through the centuries.

Green Man fans must own this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginner book
Don't think that because this book was published in the 1980s that it is somehow out of date. It is an excellent book that will show even the first time carver (like me) how to get started and to achieve good results with minimal outlay on tools and materials. When my husband saw my very first Santa, he pronounced that he wants me to make him 10 more like it. Well, I don't know about that... But carving is enjoyable, just make sure to buy a leather thumbguard so you don't cut yourself like I did!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice book to get started in Santa carving
The Santa carving and painting techniques are well illustrated and explained.I also like how he describes how you can modify his patterns to personalize your Santas. He even shows how to cut a wood blank without apower tool.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy and useful guidelines to start Santa carving
Ron Ransom's book is highly recommended for the novice carver who would like to produce nice results.Mostly photos and captions, the book takes the reader through the basic steps of making some attractive "folk art" santa figures. Don't be fooled by the sparse text -- the photos offer a wealth of guidance.Ron also describes a simple yet effective way to give the carvings an "antique" look.Warning: once you do a few of these projects, expect to get many requests for your work around the Holidays! ...
