Product Description
Masatoshi is the last netsuke carver to belong to the great tradition of Japanese craftsmanship, belonging, that is, in all particulars but one - this book; for never before has a master carver described himself, his training and his approach to his work.

How does a carver choose his subjects? What influences his choice of materials? What tools does he use to carve with? How long does he spend polishing his work? Masatoshi shares his insights of a master carver, and more; he welcomes us into his realm of ghosts and goblins, owls and lizards, Kabuki heroes and Edo Period entertainers - all of them brought to life in the carver's descriptions of his own netsuke and in the carvings themselves, each one illustrated in color. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not much of anything here.
Very thin book. Not much content.Black and white pictures take the depth out of the sample carvings. Only 1 picture per carving. All of the patterns are vertical, not one horizontal carving or pattern. You can probably get better patterns for free off the internet. Instuctions are minimal at best. Not much time or investment went into composing this book. It shows!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Complete Instructions? Not really
I was disappointed with this book. Its not really very good for beginners. The patterns are kind of ugly and the instruction are not well defined and only about a paragraph long. I wont be tackling these patterns for a while. The description said this book is good for beginners but I have to disagree, unless you have a little experience behind you, you wont do so well with the instructions. I think people who have some experience will do fine with this book though. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One eyed man
This book has some good pictures and is quite comprehensive (I think). However, the pricing of the items leaves a lot to be desired. The suggested prices are quite vague and incomplete. In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king.Since there are prices suggested it is helpful to have some information rather than none which was the case before I got the book. For a collector, it is worth its cost for the wide range of Anri figures depicted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Carving Inspiration
This book is written for collectors but as a woodcarver, I appreciate the history of woodcarving that is a part of this book. The book is filled with great color photos of carvings done over many years. On the downside, it cost me more money because after reading it, I ended up going to ebay and bidding on several anri carvings.I did note than a number of the carvings for sale were being sold by the books author. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars book not worth paper
this book does not tell what equipment to use, where to find stone, hwo to carve different types of stone, nor how to carve stone at all.it is a waste of good paper and will not help anyone who wants to actually carve stone

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful but lacking!
Ok, to be fair, this little book is a good one for the utter novice who is looking to get started in the art of stone carving. I found it very helpful and her tips were sound and good. It sparked my creative side and also helped me with some early difficulties.I will keep mine as a reference book! Worth the price!

1-0 out of 5 stars This is a unsubstantial, odd and disappointing book.
Stage's book is cheesy. It is 46 pages long, written in a jerky, disconnected, unfocussed style. She spends ten and a half pages on anatomy, offering helpful pointers such as "The forehead is the part of the face above the eyes [...]Carve the forehead to suit the subject being sculptured." Stage goes over various types of stone (alabaster, soapstone, turquoise, etc.) and briefly discusses technique and tools. But the information (excluding digressions) is really minimal and there are no addresses of suppliers._Rock sculpture: the joy of stone carving for beginners_ is very inexpensive, but I would recommend looking for a book less cheap and more useful. ...
