Product Description
This is a thorough, complete guide of the most-usedunconventional therapies and the scientific research that supports ordispels any claims, myths or hype associated with them. You can learnthe latest about herbs, acupuncture, diet, exercise, tai chi, magnets, movement therapies, spiritual healing, mind/body therapies, and more. You'll also learn what to expect from these treatments, how much theycost and how to find a qualified practitioner.Amazon.com Review
More than 43 million people of all ages in the U.S. sufferfrom arthritis, an often disabling disease for which conventionalmedicine offers only limited relief from pain--and no cure. Arthritispatients are increasingly seeking alternative therapies, yet thesehave their drawbacks, too: though some have proven benefits, manyothers are expensive and work for only some, others are useless, and some are dangerous. This book aims to be a"common-sense guide through the maze of the most-used complementarytherapies for arthritis, to help you choose wisely among the manyoptions available," and it succeeds beautifully. The book lists 22complementary therapies, from familiar ones like acupuncture, meditation, tai chi, and yoga, to less accepted treatments like copperbracelets, magnets, and bee stings (don't worry, the book isn'trecommending this, only providing information). The "Nature'sMedicines" section discusses more than 40 herbs and supplements.

The book describes each therapy and how it is used, presentsscientific evidence and expert opinion, and gives tips on how to finda practitioner and information on costs, advice, cautions, andresources in a helpful and reader-friendly style. There are alsoguidelines for working with your doctor, choosing a therapist, andavoiding rip-offs. Author Judith Horstman, a two-time FulbrightScholar and award-winning editor of Arthritis Today magazine, makes the point that complementary therapies cannot "cure" arthritisor replace proven medical treatments. They can, however, ease symptomsand improve your outlook, and may even enhance the effects of yourconventional treatment. This is an extremely useful and beautifullyillustrated book for arthritis sufferers seeking to expand theirtreatment as informed consumers. --Joan Price ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice overview of all the alternative therapies.
Nice graphics and type. Treats all therapies evenly. Basic info across all spectrums, including what to expect at your first acupuncture session, what naturopathy is, and more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Separates hype from hope, again and again
When this book was first released, I gave a copy to my 75-year-old mother, who has osteoarthritis. Over and over, she's told me about consulting this book when trying to decide whether or not to try some remedy that a friend has suggested. She feels that it has kept her from spending a fortune on snake oil, and has made her bold enough to try alternative approaches that have been helpful, such as glucosamine-chondroitin supplements. Obviously it was the perfect gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide For Anyone, Traditional or Nontraditional
I found this book very helpful in making sense out of the confusing array of alternative therapiesout there these days.Ms. Horstman provides a no-nonsense overview of many traditional healing techniques, together with a comprehensive bibliography and medical references. The organization of the book makes it very easy to use, too. Overall, this book shows a high level of qualityon all levels, and is a valuable resource for thoseof us in search of health and healing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource

Product Description
Arthritis affects millions of people throughout the world and while its treatment is usually medical or surgical, there exists an increasingly large body of evidence concerning the positive effects of nutrition on the condition.

There are over two hundred forms of rheumatoid disease, with conditions varying in prevalence. In this important title the authors have focussed on osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the most common arthritic diseases with the largest body of dietary data. Including coverage of disease incidence and prevalence, pathology, aetiology and measures of disease assessment and dietary risk factors, Nutrition and Arthritis is a clear, concise and user-friendly book gathering the latest research to bring the reader state-of-the-art information on:

  • Micronutrients (e.g. vitamins C, D and selenium), food supplements and their potential to ameliorate arthritis
  • Polyunsaturated fatty acids, with particular attention paid to n-3 fatty acids
  • Glucosamine and chondroitin
  • The value of exclusion, vegetarian, vegan and other dietary approaches

Nutritionists and dietitians, including those working in the health services, rheumatologists, orthopaedic surgeons, general practitioners, osteopaths and commercial organisations involved in the formulation of dietary supplements will find this book an important and practical reference source. Libraries in medical schools and universities and research establishments where nutrition, dietetics and food science are studied and taught will find it a valuable addition to their shelves. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I bought this book for my mother and although this publication is quite old the exercises in the book have not dated. There are clear illustrations together with easy to follow written instructions for all the exercises. All parts of the body are covered so whether arthritis affects your neck or your knees this book is for you. My mother is 85 and had no difficulty doing the exercises which have helped her enormously.

4-0 out of 5 stars A helpful guide for arthritis sufferers!
In addition to the good descriptions of arthritis, I found this book to be a great collection of exercises. A complete list of gentle exercises to increase range of motion, flexibility and strength are all described andillustrated in this little book. Shortly after being diagnosed withrhumatoid arthritis I checked out an armload of arthritis books from mypublic library. The one that I liked the best was this common sense littlevolume. It is small enough to tuck into your suitcase and take on a tripor to leave on your chairside table as a reminder to do some of theexercises during the evening TV commercials. It has helped me and Ihighly recommend it for anyone who has been diagnosed with either osteoarthritis or rhumatoid arthritis. ... Read more

Product Description
The avenues of research relating to radiation appear limitless, and only a few can be mentioned in a single text. One scientist could spend a lifetime in study of such a single phase of radiation. This manuscript, of necessity, is limited in scope. It is a story of one uranium-radon mine locality in Montana, where radon gas, its transmutedelements and ionized air, are found in the Free Enterprise Health Mine workings - such elements now known to have important beneficial effects on afflicted people.

A parallel to the Free Enterprise Health Mine is located near Badgastein Austria where the medical doctors of Innsbruck University operate a spa and a 1,500 meter adit containing radon gas, to which their patients are exposed. European doctors' written clinical evaluations, records of patient response to scientific conclusions there, with reference to arthritis and other afflictions, are nearly identical to the determinations effected at the Montana facility.

Effectiveness of the radiation utilized at the Free Enterprise Health Mine is based on the fact that the modicum of radiation acquired by the body results from short half-life elements transmuted from the radon gas, when inhaled and exhaled.

Nature's radon inhalation therapy effects relief or cure in many cases by reaching a basic cause of disease, reactivating the body's endocrine gland system toward normal production of ACTH, hydrocortisone and other body hormones. ... Read more
