Product Description
More than forty million Americans have arthritis, a disease of joint deterioration that costs people everything they take for granted. But with breakthrough research that she conducted with fellow Tufts scientists Kristin Baker and Ronenn Roubenoff, Miriam E. Nelson has developed a plan that people can use to actually reverse the pain and immobility that arthritis causes-right in their own homes.

Those people with arthritis who participated in the groundbreaking Tufts study experienced a 43 percent reduction in pain, a 44 percent improvement in physical function, and a 71 percent improvement in strength. This book offers readers the exact same lifestyle "tools" that the Tufts team gave its subjects:

* an exercise program designed specifically to protect the joints and ameliorate stiffness and soreness
* an eating plan to reduce inflammation and pain
* a guide to the latest medications and complementary therapies
* strategies for overcoming arthiritis-related depression.Amazon.com Review
Exercise, particularly strength training, can restore function and reduce the pain of arthritis, as Tufts research scientists have discovered. In Strong Women and Men Beat Arthritis, the team of researchers, headed by Miriam Nelson, Ph.D., presents a home exercise program based on a study of 46 people with severe osteoarthritis of the knee. In four months, the group--who exercised in their homes with easy-to-find equipment--reported 43 percent less pain, 44 percent improved function, and 71 percent increased muscle strength.

The 16-week exercise program starts with a daily half-hour of core exercises and adds intensity and additional exercises after the first month. The program combines strength, aerobic, and flexibility exercises, with the main focus on strength training. You'll need dumbbells, ankle weights, and an exercise step (or staircase). Even newcomers to exercise will find the illustrated instructions simple enough and the level low enough to start immediately.

The program includes a nutritional plan to reduce stiffness and inflammation, emphasizing water, fruits, vegetables, and the right fatty acid ratios. The authors also discuss medications (they work best in combination with exercise and nutrition) and sort through alternative treatments.

Nelson is the well-known author of Strong Women Eat Well, Strong Women Stay Young, Strong Women Stay Slim, and Strong Women, Strong Bones. This title is highly recommended for arthritis sufferers who want to improve their quality of life. --Joan Price ... Read more

This book is very encouraging and positive. Many ideas for how to stay in shape which does help beat arthritis.Unfortunately I am lazy and forget to do the exercises.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for those with arthritis
This is the 2nd copy of this book I've bought. The first was for myself and has been a great help with my rheumatoid arthritis over the years. Now that my daughter has been diagnosed with the same disease, I wanted her to have a copy for her own, not just my borrowed copy.Besides, I needed mine back!

The idea that we can take charge of our disease and make informed decisions, and especially, improve our condition through strength training is an empowering concept. The book discusses everything from diet to drugs to alternative treatments, with detailed instructions and diagrams on stretching and strength exercises that can be done at home and really make a difference.

I showed this book to my rheumatologist, and he was quite impressed.I'd recommend it for anyone with arthritis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong Men and Women Beat Arthritis by Dr. Nelson
This is an excellent work on the alternative medicinal and
conventional medicine protocols for arthritis. Dr. Nelson
mentions various Vit C dietary combinations utilizing
orange juice, strawberries or grapefruit to provide Vit. C.
Next, the authors cite important anti-inflammatory combos;
such as, Omega 3 fish oil and flaxseed oil. Sunflower oil
has the requisite Omega 6 ingredients. Sulfasalazine and
methotrexate are important protocols for treating seronegative
spondylarthropathies. In addition, the lungs, heart and eyes
may be impacted by ankylosing spondylitis and related diseases.
For instance, Iritis may impact the eyes. Calcification of
the heart valves and electronic problems with the heart have
been noted. Decreased lung capacity is another important
resultant of ankylosing spondylitis.

The authors point out that Chronic Juvenile Arthritis stunts
growth. In addition, the SED RATE (sedimentation rate) and
rhematoid factor are the gold standard for blood tests to
detect arthritis. In my own experience, the MOST- micro-oxidative
stress test may be helpful in articulating the yeast component
as an aggravating factor in arthritic conditions.

The authors provide an important series of exercises which
may be helpful for arthritic patients. The physical therapy
training consists of moderate squatting, toe stand
(standing erect on your toes), moderate push-ups by pressing
the wall, back extensions by facing the floor and raising the
head, modified sit-ups, knee extension flexing, full range
motion employing light weights in torque motion, face flat on
the floor raising the back legs, the lunge stretch,
cross-over hips, placing one knee on the chair and standing
upright or erect, shoulder stretches and a host of others.
Dr. Nelson indicates that excess joint fluid is a sign of
inflammation. In addition, surgical intervention can be
helpful. For instance, an artificial joint may last 15-20 years.
Acupuncture helps to stimulate endomorphins and change blood
flow patterns. There is evidence that acupuncture relieves
arthritis, although there is less evidence for Chiropractic.
This book is worth the price. It provides important alternative
medicinal protocols for arthritis as well as classic physical
therapy exercises aimed at preserving joint mobility and
elasticity. I would supplement the exercises with Alpha
Lipoic Acid to enhance bodily elasticity. In my own experience,
Northern Polar magnets may be helpful if strategically placed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really seems to help!
I was recently diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis, and I started following the nutritional suggestions in this book. I think it's already starting to help! Plus it tells you how to perform strengthening exercises for your aching joints. I am a big fan of Dr. Nelson's other works. I like how she explains the science and the applications. I plan to share this with my mom, who also has osteoarthritis.

5-0 out of 5 stars No hype, just good, sound information.
I am the kind of person that is not going to buy or "buy into" a book unless it is supported by some reasonable evidence. If you're like me, then you'll love this book.It is based on a study recently conducted at the Tufts University. In short, the study used a program of exercise and nutrition to combat arthritis. The results? Pain was reduced by a whopping 43%!

Key to their program was strengthening exercises which have been shown in other studies as well as being extremely beneficial for arthritis patients.I am very pleased with books like these that offer sound treatments based on research. If you like these kind of books too and also suffer from back pain, I can recommend "The Multifidus Back Pain Solution" (available here at amazon.ca too) that is based on randomized controlled trials and involves only one exercise you do at home that strengthens your multifidus muscles found to be abnormal in many people with back pain.So start reading, start exercising, and start getting better! ... "Arthritis and Common Sense" by Dale Alexander. I purchased a copy. Followed the plan and was up and about in 6 weeks! I have been able to manage my arthritis for 40 years by following this advice. Now I buy copies and send to my friends that are having a struggle. I always hope and pray that they will get as much benefit from it as I have. I am so glad that it is still available at amazon.com.

I have one thing to add in my experience about taking the codliver oil. If you take it at night on an empty stomach before going to bed, you will not have to deal with belching or burping the fish oil all day. That makes it much more tolerable to take on a daily basis.

I can't give my review, because I haven't rec'd my books yet.I've contacted both sellers. One seller has been extremely helpful, and is resending the book this week. However, I haven't received a return email from betterworldbooks.

This has been a very frustrating, month long ordeal.I'm anxious to receive the ( 2 ) copies of Arthritis And Common Sense, so I can share the information with people who have arthritis.

I like the book, even though there are things I dont agree with.I'm trying this treatment and hope it wil work. What I ask myself if they're still in use or they proved wrong presently.

This book saved my life! I highly reccomend it! 20 yrs ago when I was 30 I could barely walk. I was always in so much pain... every dang joint in my body! Now I am totally healthy at 50!!! The book does talk about exercise...not to do it unless your joints are oiled!! It would be like starting a car without oil...the moving parts would be damaged. Exercise when you're healed! Follow the guidelines in this book & your joints will be oiled! It worked for me! I just wonder where I would be today without my dad giving me this book 20 yrs ago.

Whether or not his theories are scientifically correct, the advice in this book produces great results. ... Read more

This is a great book for anyone to read! It is very easy to understand, the medicines are explained in simple english. It would be an extremely useful tool for any student studying rheumatology because they would have quick reference to all of the arthritic medicines with brand names, symptoms, precautions, and general results. A person afflicted by arthritis would want to read this book because it helps you choose which medicines would be best for YOU by talking about many medicines and what they are used for...this is something that i did not see in many other books. It's simple, easy to read, can be used like a dictionary of medicine, and is reliable. I would reccomend it for anyone who needs information on arthritis.

5-0 out of 5 stars finally understanding your medications
This book is unique among the various types of medical textbooks in that it does not read like a medical textbook. Lay persons to specialists in the field can benefit from reading this book.It is especially helpful to people who have a rheumatic disease and who are taking any treatment therapies.A substantial number of people being treated with arthritis medications also have other health problems for which they are taking medication. Unfortunately, too little time is available to spend educating these patients about the mechanisms of drug actions, their potential for interaction with other drugs, proper dosing, and the risk/benefit ration of available treatments.Dr. Stein does a good job in this regard. The book is well organized into categories that allow the reader to easily find information about the specific drugs that are of interest. However, I recommend reading it from cover to cover for a comprehensive overview of the rheumatic diseases and current treatment options. This book will be helpful to patients, physicians, medical students and those allied health professionals who participate in the care and education of persons with arthritis. ... Read more
