1-0 out of 5 stars a recipe book
I was very disappointed in this book. Having RA myself I did not feel a connection with Sonia. If anything, I felt she was selling her recipes. It was boring and definitely not worth the time or money spent to purchase this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have Rheumatoid Arthritis, you must read it
I felt completely identified with the author Sonia St. Claire. If you have Rheumatoid Arthritis, you must read this book. You will find that some of the symptons you have, had never been linked with RA. You will begin to understand yourself and become aware of your body. Some of the pains described in this book, I would have never related to RA. Doctors don't tell you (because they don't feel the stress, pain and dispair). They are not sick.
Sonia describes in a very easy going manner all about RA and how she went from being truly impaired in bed to freeing herself from RA. We all can!!! Congratulations

5-0 out of 5 stars Freedom from Rheumatoid Arthritis
This book is an incredible read! It is full of up to date information on how to live a healthy life. Although, the diet is directed towards eliminating Rheumatoid Arthritis, it makes sense that a diet of this kind would boost one's immune system and cure any number of ailments. The author has written a poignant, informative picture of her life story. She reflects on her childhood as an orphan and the considerable abuse that she endured over a long period of time.Resentments and emotional baggage carried from Childhood to adulthood can wreak havoc on one's body. Hence, the crippling effect of rheumatoid arthritis as it ravages the body. The author took fate into her own hands and decided that she was going to heal her body with getting back to nature: eating healthy and eliminating toxic foods, drinks and medicine from her diet. The results are evident, nothing short of miraculous as this once crippled women is now a picture of physically and emotionally health. I thank the author for sharing this with us. It is truly a gift. ... Read more

Product Description
As a biologist with over thirty years of experience teaching a wide range of complex biomedical subjects and a person who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) himself, Dr Thomas F Lee is ideally suited to write a book that addresses the vital questions about the nature of the disease and the rationale behind its treatment. This is the only book that explains in layperson's terms the newest available therapies and the latest advances in our understanding of this often debilitating disease. These new insights have led to many molecular-based approaches already in clinical trial, and many more are waiting in the wings. All of these exciting developments are the result of the ongoing biotechnological revolution and a new understanding of the immune system aided by genetic research. Millions of people suffer from rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a debilitating auto-immune disease that ravages the delicate lining of the joints. As in other auto-immune diseases, instead of defending against foreign invaders, the immune system inexplicably attacks healthy tissue.RA causes systemic effects as well; not only are joints painful, through the destruction of bone and cartilage, but there is often accompanying fatigue, decreased appetite, depression, and muscle pain. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read
Great book for someone newly diagnosed with RA. Especially for someone who likes, "how stuff works". Offers an extensive list of websites in the back for further fact gathering and keeping up to date. Also a good resource for navigating and understanding the disease process and progression & the medicines available. I wish there had been a nod to, Dr. John E Sarno's (professor, Rehabilitation Medicine at the New York University School of Medicine) work and experience with treating RA and other mindbody disorders. If you are reading this review and have an interest his most recent book (2007) "The Divided Mind" is well worth taking a look at. I think it is important to keep an open mind, keep digging and find what works for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a comprehensive discussion of RA we can understand.
This discussion on RA is the most comprehensive available in layman's terms. This disease process is so complicated and the research on treatment so varied, trying to keep up on journal articles or short publications is almost impossible. This book puts more useable information between the two covers than you will find anywhere. Unlike medical journals, the disease process explanations are concise and understandable.Although the explanations are detailed and scientific and may take more than one reading to get your brain around the complex concepts, it nicely falls somewhere in between the very oversimplified information found in "arthritis" books available at bookstores and over-complicated and hard-to-read medical book information. Truly helpful is the detail about how clinical trials are conducted and the complicated sequence of events that occur in treatment research. It makes the waiting for decades for new treatments a little easier to understand. Also helpful are the briefs on current research (now a bit out of date-some of the "in trials" treatments in the book have been approved and are available) that is ongoing along with web sites so individuals can follow trials, results, research progress, etc. and even contains information on joining in some of the clinical trials. The description of the immune processes is very helpful. Not only does it help the reader understand the immune system as a whole, and the effect of this disease on the immune system, it also gives a good picture of how HIV and AIDS compares on the opposite end of the immunity spectrum (overactive vs. underactive immune system). Best of all, this book arms RA sufferers with good information to be able to take a more active role in their own treatment. Buy it for a friend who has RA or buy it for yourself. You will want to reread it several times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Gift for someone with rheumatoid arthritis!
If you have rheumatoid arthritis, or if a friend or loved one has been diagnosed with this disease I highly recommend this book as an invaluable source of information. Not only is it packed with facts on rheumatoid arthritis ranging from details of exactly what is happening in the joints and the immune system to useful Web sites to keep up on the latest details on new medications and treatment approaches, it is also clearly and beautifully written. It really is a handbook to help readers make informed decisions with their physcians.Included as well are fascinating insights into possible future treatments now in the research stage - from the use of stem cells to gene therapy.
This is the best gift you can give a friend who suffers from RA. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A family physician reviews the book for a lay audience
"Overcoming Arthritis" is an excellent book for the lay person. It discusses the common types of arthritis, some of the origins of arthritis, and reviews treatments for arthritis. It also describes some of the self-care that people with arthritis can use to minimize the disease process itself and to make their lives more comfortable. The most important part of the book, however, is Dr. Lam's introduction of his "Tai Chi for Arthritis" program. He describes in photos and in words the twelve steps in the form that has been shown to decrease pain and stiffness in people with arthritis and to increase strength and flexibility and a sense of well-being in this same population. The photos are excellent and precisely demonstrate each of the twelve movements. From this book, a person could begin to practice Tai Chi on their own.He also suggests other places where a person might get more information about dealing with arthritis in a pro-active, positive way.
In a world of "how-to" books, I would highly recommend this to all people with arthritis--and to those who have a loved one with arthritis.

5-0 out of 5 stars overcoming arthritis?!
Overcoming Arthritis is a clear and detailed account of the accepted and non traditional ways of living with a chronic condition.

The book gives a brief discussion of the different strands of the arthritis family, and explains the more common ones in detail. There is not too much medical information; and yet the authors do not talk down to the readers.

As well as complementary therapies and medicine for arthritis, there is a section on herbal remediea and another on diet. The best arthritis diet, it says, is the one that suits your lifestyle and medications the best - so simple! The section on Tai Chi is incredibly detailed. Both pictures and words are used to good effect when describing @Tai Chi for Arthritis@.In fact, as a teacher of this programme, I use this bit with my classes.

The book also shows the variety of ways arthritis can affect your life - it can be anything from a minor nuisance to a life threatening illness.

For people with arthritis, the book is not too heavy or unwieldy to manage.Good clear print, with plenty of relevant illustrations a lsomake this a good choice.

If you are only going to buy one book on arthritis, make this the one.I had to review it for an arthritis magazine, and was so impressed, I went out and bought my own!

5-0 out of 5 stars Overcoming Arthitis by Dr Paul Lam and Judith Horstman
Dr Lam's enthusiam for overcoming this painful condition originates from his own experience of the pain. His determination to teach others to overcome the pain and suffering is projected to the reader with a sense of joy and hope.

This book will be welcomed world wide for its sensitivity and hope.It raises teaching techniques to a new level of clarity with easy to follow directions for people of all nationalities and ages.Beautifully co-authored by the award winning medical journalist, Judith Horstman, the book is brought to life as if Dr Lam is the reader's own doctor, instructing in personal consultation.

Positive proof of Dr Lam's personal success in overcoming the painful condition can be seen in his flexibility and agility in his TAI CHI teaching and demonstration videos.

Books can go to people all over the world, to the furthermost places on earth, as gifts, general reading or study guides.Dr Lam's understanding of arthritic conditions comes also from years of teaching and the answers seem to be there before the questions are asked.

For the quick reader, it is a delightful page turner of information and interesting facts. For sufferers of arthritis and associated conditions who will read, learn and apply what they learn, the information will become a lifestyle of discovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best combination of information and action
Dr. Lam and Ms. Horstman have written a beautiful book that outlines the available treatments for arthritis as well as Dr. Lam's own program of Tai Chi. The graphics are beautiful, and lend an uplifting quality to the text. There is enough information to start an exercise program on your own and a list of teaching resources in the back. This book promises and delivers a better quality of life for men and women with arthritis. I have been following the program for over a year and have benefited greatly. He also tells you the truth about painkillers, gives you realistic diet & exercise programs to follow, & helps you overcome the blues that come with any chronic condition.Amazon.com Review
The word "cure" in the title is a bitmisleading, but this book certainly makes a persuasive argument infavor of treating osteoarthritis with two common nutritionalsupplements--glucosamine and chondroitin sulfates--and following aprogram emphasizing better nutrition and exercise. The supplements arecommonly used in Europe and Asia, where they've been tested indouble-blind, placebo-controlled studies (the gold standard formedical research). They haven't been thoroughly tested in the UnitedStates, the authors contend, because drug companies can't patent thesupplements and thus won't fund the research. The book also contains achapter detailing a seven-step arthritis-prevention program. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Basic Info that Can be Found on the Net
Much of this book is page filler, it advocates Glucosomine and Chondrodin Sulphate as its main "cure" and then talks about eating foods high in antioxidants (which is really old basic info that we can find in plenty of books and websites). It is also very repetative, I remember reading the same subject three times near the beginning (page filler.)

Although the book is helpful, especially for really ignorant newbies who hate the internet, it needs to be thinned out and the common knowledge parts taken out.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Arthritis Cure : The Medical Miracle
I injured my knee around Labor Day and four months later I had minimal results with physical therapy and NSAIDs. My once active life had stopped, every activity I tried, even walking, aggravated my knee. I started on the Glucosomine and Chondrodin Sulphate program along with the vitamin supplements outlined in the book and had great results. After just a few weeks, I am able to hike and workout again. I feel better than I have in months! I know several friends on Glucosomine, but I felt better with the book outlining the dosage and other vitamins to compliment. I have not needed any NSAIDs since I started this therapy. I like that this program has almost no side effects and can help my injury without surgery. Try it for yourself, what do you have to lose but the pain?

4-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile and perhaps more
This was followed by Maximizing the Arthritis Cure (1998) which I'll also report on here, treating both books as one.My initial reaction was, this is either a public service or a hustle.Written by three differentlaureled academics and obviously put together by committee, this first bookwas a big time best seller and demanded a sequel. Most of the diet advicewas like something I had read twenty years ago.The exercise programditto. The use of glucosamine and chondroitin was the real difference.Infact, the purpose of the book could be seen as legitimizing the use ofthese supplements in the treatment of osteoarthritis.People bought thebook in the hope that it would help them with their pain. They also boughtthe book so that they would be motivated to try glucosamine andchondroitin. Many people understandably would not try the supplementswithout the seal of approval provided by an authoritative book like this. The question is-and it is the big question-is their program any good, or isit just another feel good pep talk fronting for another bogus approach? Iwas a little uncertain since the book jacket was red, white and blue, andwe all know the quote about patriotism being "the last refuge of ascoundrel."

So I tried glucosamine and chondroitin and stayed fairlyclose to their overall program. Two years have passed and although Icannot say for certain, it is my belief that the supplements are valuable. At any rate, my arthritic knee is much improved.

In the follow-up book, the authors give information on other treatments.

I have to say that Ithink they've done a positive service in writing these two books.Theinformation about healing in general and about prevention and about thepositive effects of exercise and attitude are worthwhile. The authors mayhave made megabucks (or maybe they didn't), but I don't feel they rippedanybody off, on the contrary.I am happy to be positive even though Istill think "cure" is probably too strong a word for what their program cando, although I only have my own experience to go on.Their reports of thedouble blind tests that have been conducted are good, but a long way fromconvincing proof that glucosamine and chrondoitin and exercises can cureosteoarthritis.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Arthritis Cure
After reading this book by Dr. Theodosakis, I recommended it tomy grandmother and 35 year-old girlfriend, both of whom haveosteoarthritis. Not only has it lessened grandma's pain, but also her depression has largely lifted. My friend, who is a fellow registered nurse, was thrilled that she was able to stop taking acetaminophen following her second month of taking glucosamine and chondroitin. She believes the dietary changes she made after reading the book were also helpful toward making her body more supple, like a slinky.I was indeed surprised to find some negative comments written by readers.Perhaps they were victims of the many fraudulent products our there with insufficient quantities of glucosamine and chondroitin in them.I found Dr. Theo's website to be very helpful in learning more about specific good and bad products.I will continue to recommend this book to anyone and everyone who tells me that they suffer from arthritis. There is hope!END

5-0 out of 5 stars The Arthritis Cure : The Medical Miracle That Can Halt, Reve
I found this book an excellent presentation on glucosamine, chondroitin, the various surgical options, advice about exercise and diet (the importance of weight loss, etc). For me it seems to be working asadvertised. I have osteoarthritus of the hip and knee and am seeingnoticeable improvements.I have a friend that is a physical therapist andshe has been using glucosamine/chondroitin and has noticed significantimprovements in the use of her ankle and her ability to walk. Certainlyglucosamine/chondroitin are not replacements for everthing as diet/weightloss are also extremely important. I recommend this book highly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than cortisone shots
A friend loaned me this book.....read it and then ordered my own copy. Told another friend about it and she ordered a copy also. Had a mild interest in bee sting therapy already. Had my big toes stung at a beekeepers conference and was very impressed with the results. Got relief that lasted for about 3 weeks. The book gives you some instructions on stinging yourself and also lots of true stories and examples. Now sting my own toes.....something I didn't know if I would be able to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice of a book to learn more about apitherapy
Fred Malone has done an excellent job in keeping an interesting take on this wonderful available "alternative" medicine in apitherapy. If you are tired of the medical and pharmaceutical industry ripping you off, or if you are sick and those geniuses can't figure out whats wrong with you, maybe you should really take a serious look at alternative treatments that have been proven over and over again to work! Why don't the doctors and medical industry back it???? Because they cant make money off of something that will make you well permanently, and they can't charge you for something that you can develop free in your own back yard in a beehive! The government hasn't figured out how to tax the beehive in the tree in your backyard yet either, however, they are working hard on it.Good luck, get the book, its worth the read!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Bees Don't Get Arthritis
This book is quite convincing (about the benefits of apitherapy), but it is completely anecdotal. The folksy tone of the writing is a drawback that could put off a reader seriously seeking help with arthritis.Anyone at all skeptical or scientific will want data, and there really is none here. I know individuals who have been helped tremendously by apitherapy (more anecdotal evidence), so I am less skeptical than other serious readers might be.The book increased my belief in the benefits of bee sting therapy, despite the lack of data and scientific analysis.

The most up-to-date information on this disease that strikes one insix people.

Includes case histories, practitioners' perspectives, and a completeresource guide to the organizations, publications, and Internet sitesdevoted to arthritis.

For those suffering from arthritis and other arthritic diseases suchas gout and fibromyalgia, The Arthritis Bible is the most up-to-dateand complete resource to available treatments--both alternative andconventional.Forty-three million Americans--one in six of us--areafflicted with arthritis, yet the traditional medical communitycontinues to offer only the limited number of treatments found withinthe narrowly proscribed boundaries of Western medicine. And while manyalternative therapies do provide relief, too many have become victimsof the "flavor-of-the-month" mentality, their true merits being lostamidst hype and unwarranted claims before adequate research has beendone.

The Arthritis Bible supplies the latest wisdom on conventional drugs, exercise, physical therapy, diet, vitamins and minerals, traditionalherbs, nutraceuticals, homeopathy, and folk remedies. It also adviseshow to choose the right medical approach and practitioner, gives casehistories, and presents the perspectives of a variety of differenttypes of practitioners. For anyone seeking relief from the painful andoften debilitating consequences of arthritic diseases, The ArthritisBible is a must for the shelf. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't be afraid of alternative therapies.
This book helped us understand the diverse views of the different arthritis treatments and offered good advice. My elderly aunt has been plagued with arthritis for years and hasn't always been willing to tryalternative treatments. As her pain progressed we convinced her to try theglucosamine and condroitan blends. She is seeing substantial improvements! Our daughter is taking it as a way to heal her back injuries due to anaccident. She no longer needs those heavy duty pain killers. An additionalsite that offers more documentation as well as these (and others)supplements is iHerb. They do a wonderful job at documenting the diversenutritional supplements they supply and their service is reliable. In fact,I think I first read about Theodosakis' books on their site. Treatarthritis naturally and see how much better you feel without those painkillers that make your mind fuzzy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding coverage of all reasonable, effective treatments
This is an excellent, concise, highly usable book about ALL reasonable treatments that show merit and promise for treating arthritis, both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.Though the coverage of eachtreatment is remarkably brief and to-the-point, it avoids being just a"shopping list" of what to take; and manages to prioritize, inwell-reasoned arguments, what makes the most sense to try and why.

Don'texpect a flimsy health food store brochure filled with questionable claims,or some pamphlet telling you what you already know. This is a VERYwell-written, SUPERBLY organized, thorough and comprehensive book--a modelof how to cover conventional and alternative treatments of ANY disease.Ifyou buy just one book on dealing with arthritis, this should be it.(Andgiven how common arthritis is, it might make a thoughtful gift for someoneelse you know as well.) ... As early as Arthritis for Dummies's first page--ayellow tear card entitled "Cheat Sheet"--you know you're gettinguseful information. The cheat sheet gives quickie tips on sevenhelpful topics: "Before Agreeing to Surgery," "10 Ways to ManageArthritis," "10 Arthritis Myths to Watch out For," "10 Super Foods toHelp Combat Arthritis," "10 Crackerjack New Treatments," "Talking toYour Doctor About Alternative Therapies," and "Identifying FalseClaims for Alternative Therapies." Arthritis for Dummiesexplores all of these topics, and many more, in detail.

Theauthors, husband-and-wife team Barry Fox, Ph.D. (The Arthritis Cure,The 20/30 Fat & FiberDiet Plan) and Nadine Taylor, M.S., R.D., a registereddietician, explain the different forms of arthritis andarthritis-related conditions and how to work effectively with yourdoctor. Most of the rest of the book is an easy-to-read guidebook todozens of treatments and pain-management strategies. Rather thandiscussing arthritis treatment from a purely Western medicineapproach, the authors also detail Eastern healing systems, lifestylestrategies (including illustrations of exercises), and alternativetherapies. Everything from Ayurveda to Zyloprim is in here. A drawbackis that the authors do not always differentiate between remedies thatare backed by scientific evidence and those that have only anecdotalsupport. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Arthritis Dummies Book Review
It was well worth the $$ and book was in great condition as described it would be.I would suggest this seller to others.

1-0 out of 5 stars I resent this
This book is an insult. I am a dummy by no one's estimation. However, I have two different forms of arthritis. I developed them without ever reading a word on the topic, as I'm sure many arthritis sufferes have. That there would be a book offering instructions on getting arthritis for the feeble minded is an insult to all the noises I make getting out of low chairs!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Practical
I've had arthritis for a long time, so I was happy to find this well-rounded, informative and practical arthritis book. I learned more from this book than I have from all the others I've read - combined. It gives a good overview of all kinds of arthritis, the ways they diagnose it and treatments. It also talks about the drugs used for the disease, their pros and cons. There's also good information on supplements, exercise, body alignment, and more. I especially like the nice balance the authors struck between traditional and alternative medicine. There are a lot of new ideas in the book I hadn't heard of before - some of which worked well for my arthritis. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who has arthritis.

2-0 out of 5 stars The good, the bad and the equivocal...all rolled into one!
I found this book to be informative and entertaining but also somewhat disturbing. There seems to be a tendency to overemphasize so-called "alternative" therapy, and the information is presented in such a way as to cajole the unwary reader into thinking that mainstream and alternative treatments are equivalent. Curiously, neither of the authors is a physician, and the book hardly mentions the existence of the "rheumatologist",i.e.,the physician who specializes in diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases. I found this surprising at best, and also a bit offensive. It was clear that this is not a completely objective or balanced guide to arthritis and its management. ... Read more

Very informative book. Dr. Blau has a great insight to arthritis and the methods for treatment. This book is highly recommended to those who suffer from arthritis.

5-0 out of 5 stars How To Make A Difference!
Watching family and friends suffer from arthritis can be heart-breaking, and simply wondering how to help won't improve a situation. Not only does TOO YOUNG TO FEEL OLD prove one doctor can make a difference but also that the person who purchases this book can do so too. While many books written by doctors are technical and difficult to understand, to Dr. Blau's credit he has written a readily understood primer that combines traditional and alternative medicine.Fact is, I have given copies of other books as gifts, yet none has generated such an incredibly positive response from recipients. Two friends reported that they welcomed the suggested menus made up of foods that fight arthritis, including the recipe for Garlic Shrimp in White Wine.Another friend welcomed the special tips for making life easier. A third friend took the questionnaire designed to determine the extent of his arthritis. In a testament to the author, all have recommended TOO YOUNG TO FEEL OLD TO FRIENDS. ... Read more
