Product Description
In August 1895, Paul Gauguin spent ten days in Auckland, en route to Tahiti for the second and final time. During his stay he visited the Auckland Art Gallery and the Auckland Museum, and recorded in a sketchbook details of some of the fine Maori and Polynesian artefacts he observed. When Gauguin left Auckland he took with him a small, but vital collection, of new images, several of which were later to appear in major paintings. This work is a celebration of the centenary of Gauguin's visit to Auckland. For the first time the complete sketchbook is reproduced, and most of the artefacts he sketched at the Auckland Museum are identified and illustrated. Actual objects and details of these are clearly evident in the reproductions of some of Gauguin's most celebrated paintings, demonstrating the significance for Gauguin's subsequent work of his first-hand encounter with Maori art. ... Product Description
This is a concise and engaging, yet detailed and informative monograph that explores Gauguin's most Important works. Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) was one of the most important artists of the late 19th century, and one whose work was to have a profound influence on the development of art in the 20th century. He began as an Impressionist, but went on to develop a richly-coloured style in his constant search for pristine originality and unadulterated nature. This concise monograph collects the most important works by Gauguin, not only of his best known paintings of Tahiti in which the artist attempted to reconstruct the perfect life which he had failed to find in reality, but also of many powerful works that reflect the artist's contact with other seminal early modern masters like Van Gogh or Cezanne. ... Product Description
Gauguin's great diary from Tahiti almost never saw the light of day in its original form. The manuscript was sent by the artist from his island refuge to his friend Charles Morice in Paris, and published in 1901 with immediate success, under the two names of Paul Gauguin and Charles Morice. Morice, with Gauguin's permission, had 'edited' and enlarged it to make it more readable. How much of the charm and cripsness of the manuscript had been lost in the process was anyone's guess. It was to be forty years before Gauguin's original version came to light, and it is published here in a translation by the poet Jonathan Griffin, together with a detailed description by the art historian Jean Loize, who re-discovered themanuscript. Loize shows that Morice had in parts altered Gauguin's text beyond recognition - a startling discovery that entirely changed ideas about Gauguin's style and intentions. This genuine version of Noa-Noa is not only an important document, it is also a beautiful piece of writing: amusing, acid, wide-eyed, moving. Gauguin feared that, unedited, it would seem absurdly crude; and no doubt it would have, to most readers in his day.Today we can appreciate its sketch form, jerky directness, authentic freshness. This edition is illustrated with the watercolours, wood-engravings and drawings that Gauguin assembled for the book. ... Read more

This book,as all the books of this France Company, are absolutely unmissable for all of you who like Paul Gauguin art. The book offer beautiful pictures and many detailsabout Gauguin life that I've neverfound in any other book talking about the same topic. The only weak pointof this chain of books is that the publisher choosed a bad glue for thosebooks thus the cover and a few page jumped out of the book. Apart thisannoying problem the books of this chain are simply great ( IF YOU HAVEYOUR OWN GLUE) .

Product Description
One of the key paradoxes concerning Paul Gauguin is the fact that he was both a profound individualist and at the same time the founder of an artistic school. For the young artists collectively known as the Nabis, Gauguin's personal version of Symbolism became the canonical route to modern art. The book, which accompanies an exhibition at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemsiza, reveals this double facet of the artist and his legacy through a series of successive encounters between Gauguin and his masters, his contemporaries and his pupils.

Product Description
Paul Gauguin was introduced into the Impressionist circle by Camille Pissarro and contributed major works to five of the eight Impressionist exhibitions between 1879 and 1886. During these years, he transformed himself from a banker-stockbroker into a professional artist and from a family man into a solitary searcher for artistic, moral, and spiritual truths. Yet this vital period of Gauguin's life has usually been dismissed as an awkward prelude to his brilliant career as an anti-Impressionist. This handsomely illustrated book reconsiders Gauguin's apprenticeship as an Impressionist and reassesses his contributions to the movement through the extraordinarily subtle and beautiful paintings, sculpture, and ceramic works he created during the years before 1887. ... Product Description
Shortly before Gauguin made his first Tahitian journey in 1891, he spent nearly two years in the remote Breton fishing village of Le Pouldu. Seeking creative isolation in a "primitive" setting, he pursued his art accompanied by several followers. One of them was the Dutch painter Meyer de Haan, who was able to pay the living expenses in Le Pouldu and was also knowledgeable in literary and philosophical matters that fascinated Gauguin. Their association resulted in some of Gauguin's most remarkable works, including the Wadsworth Atheneum's symbolist portrait of de Haan inscribed "Nirvana." This and the rich variety of paintings and sculpture by Gauguin produced in 1889–90 are the focus of this beautiful book.

Gauguin and de Haan settled into an inn at Le Pouldu run by an attractive unwed mother named Marie Henry, who began a liaison with de Haan despite the fact that he was a sickly hunchback. The intensity of relations betweenGauguin and de Haan is reflected in many of the works, including frescoes, which they installed in the inn.

Gauguin's time in Le Pouldu was crucial to the advancement of his art, and the vivid Breton subjects and personality of Meyer de Haan remained in his imagination to reappear even during his later Tahitian period. In this book several distinguished experts draw on previously unavailable sources to examine in depth the history of this period, Gauguin's relationship with de Haan, their interest in religion and exotic cultures, and the meaning of the many innovative symbolist works they produced. ...
