Product Description
Claude Monet (1840-1926) was one of the first artists to move his studio out into the open air, creating works which continue to fascinate and inspire us today as much as they did his contemporaries. One of the founding fathers of Impressionist art, Monet's works consistently reflect the artist's profound love of nature. Many of his paintings were directly inspired by the gardens that played such an important role in his life--the garden at his house in Sèvres in the 1860s, those at his two homes in Argenteuil in the 1870s, followed by a garden at his estate in Vétheuil. Yet the most famous of Monet's gardens was the expansive park in Giverny, which inspired his masterful handling of light and color for more than thirty years and provided motifs for hundreds of individual paintings and series that remain immensely popular today--among them the masterpieces of his Water-Lilies series. This magnificent volume of full-page color plates is devoted to this central theme in the work of the French artist. It presents landscapes, still lifes, and portraits of people in natural settings from nearly all of Monet's creative periods--from his early Impressionist paintings of the 1870s to the Grandes Décorations of the early 1900s. Also included are photographs of Monet's gardens, diagramatic recreations of these spaces (based on the artist's paintings), several bills of delivery and planting instructions from horticulturalists.

I work constantly and lovingly on my garden. What I need most are flowers, always, always. My heart is always in Giverny.

Product Description
In a garden of spectacular beauty in Giverny, France, Claude Monet painted flowers. Dazzled by the light, he painted with rich colors of vermilion, emerald, and violet. His poppies, tulips, irises, and waterlilies have awed the world. In her radiant watercolors, Bijou Le Tord uses Monet's own palette of only eight colors. Her magnificent paintings and poetic words celebrate the extraordinary vision of the beloved impressionist painter, Claude Monet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Celebration of Art
When fall comes, so do the books. It is approximated that almost 2,000 children's books will be printed this fall.Of this mass number, perhaps ahandful--a very small handful-- are actually worth reading to a young childnight after night.Bijou Le Tord's A Blue Butterfly: A Story about ClaudeMonet, is part of this handful.

The book came out in 1995, yet it stillholds my attention and respect. What sets this book apart from otherbiographies about the artist and other children's books is its celebratorynature. Its luminescent art work invites parents and children to revisitthe art and life of Claude Monet. It captures the essence of art in itswarm colors, creating a soft aura of beauty that encloses the reader evenafter the book is finished.

Anybody interested in sharing art with ayoung child or sharing the life of an artist should purchase this book. Not only do readers learn about an early twentieth century artist, but theyalso get to share in the joy of a contemporary artist, Bijou Le Tord.

5-0 out of 5 stars Monet appreciation for children!
I have always been bedazzled by Monet's painting and his home, Giverny. This book is another wonderful way to share Monet's gifts with youngchildren. As a first-grade teacher, I appreciate the ideas suggested by theteacher below who shared her method for offering Monet toyoung children. An exceptional treasure to enjoy over and over again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely little book, a great intro to Monet for the young
My 5 yr old daughter and I picked this up at the library and what a find! This is a book of delightful watercolor illustrations of Monet out in the field, in a garden, by the sea.The pictures are so pleasant and veryreminiscent of Monet's work, and the few lines that accompany the drawingsare perfect for young children. I heartily recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Grade Monet
The book is written in the style of a poem. The poem tells a lot about Monet, where he painted and what he painted. The author also painted the illustrations, which are beautiful. She includes Monet in theillustrations.I read this book to a class of first graders and they lovedit. We then attempted to make our own Monet paintings by using our fingertips. (They used their finger tips to cover an entire page with color) Thechildren were inspired by the book and the illustrations. I felt that thebook provided a lot of basic information about Monet and is great learningtool for young children. ... Read more

Product Description
Claude Monet (1840-1926), one of the founders of French Impressionism, is one of the most popular painters in the history of art. In his paintings, he repeatedly focused his gaze upon the shifting phenomena of water, light, and mist. In a dramatically new interpretation of the artist's work, noted Monet scholar Steven Z. Levine, Leslie Clark Professor in the Humanities at Bryn Mawr College, uses the myth of Narcissus to interpret Monet's painting of reflection in water as the mirror of the artist's encounter with himself.

Editorial Review

Product Description
These 40 paintings follow Claude Monet’s progress through years of landscapes, tracking changes in his work and making the case that fields and meadows may have been his most revealing theme. Starting in 1873, Monet began painting the fields around Argenteuil with occasional human subjects--his first wife Camille and their small boy Jean--in close brushwork that brought out a vibrating tension, large-scale liveliness. The series of Seine landscapes upon which he embarked in 1878, around the area of Vétheuil, compared the river’s untouched meadows to that cultivated farmland. Canvases from the spring of 1880 contain a particularly palpable joy on the renewal of the land after a very hard winter. And it was after relocating to Giverny in 1883--a move that coincided with the increasing establishment of the Impressionist movement as the most important development in French art of that era--that Monet painted the work from which this monograph takes its name, his 1887 Fields in Spring, with its crucially austere organization of surfaces and highly systematic palette. It was a turning point in his oeuvre, a mingling of severity and simplification that brought incomparably harmonious effect and the unbroken admiration of his colleagues. This concise study closes with the fascinating paintings of 1894 in which Monet perfected this systematic approach. ... Read more
