A son explores his father’s genius

Rembrandt’s art is easily recognized by his masterful use of light and darkness. But why would Rembrandt choose to paint objects in such a way? Titus learned a lot about his father from what he painted and how he painted. Now children can learn about one of the most influential artists of all time from an adoring son’s perspective.

Product Description
In 1639, Rembrandt paid an enormous sum for a grand, patrician residence in Amsterdam, today's Rembrandthuis. Rembrandt van Rijn was a fanatical collector: he spent thousands of guilders on a unique array of art and curiosities. Eventually, his passion brought him to the brink of financial disaster. By 1656 he was bankrupt and forced to sell his house and his collections. For the auction of his property an inventory was drawn up from which it is now possible to reconstruct his collection and the way he arranged it in his house. In this richly illustrated publication, Rembrandt's activities as a collector are presented to a broad public for the first time.

His shop and his parlor were full of paintings, including work by Pieter Lastman, Jan Lievens, Hercules Seghers, and by Rembrandt himself. One room was set apart as a cabinet. It was here that he kept his costly rarities, including curiosities such as stuffed animals, shells, pieces of coral, exotic plants, oriental lacquer and porcelain, Venetian glass, coins and medals, globes, unusual weapons and casts of ancient sculptures. The cabinet also contained Rembrandt's greatest treasure: 8,000 drawings and prints by the principal Dutch, German, and Italian masters. Rembrandt's studio contained other parts of his collection. All these objects were a constant source of inspiration for Rembrandt, as his work testifies. ... Read more

Product Description
Together with "Rembrandt: The Master and his Workshop (Drawings and Etchings)", this book serves as the catalogue for a major exhibition of Rembrandt's paintings, drawings, and etchings opening at the Altes Museum in Berlin and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam in 1991. Paintings and etchings from this exhibition will later be on display at the National Gallery in London; the drawings will be shown at the British Museum. In this volume on the paintings, prominent experts discuss Rembrandt's life, his technique, the organization of his workshop, and the history of critical response to him. The authors then present detailed studies of 51 paintings definately attributed to Rembrandt, from his earliest biblical subjects to the last self-portrait. The final section of the book discusses the work of Rembrandt's pupils, including Ferdinand Bol, Gerrit Dou, and Nicolaes Maes. Paintings once assumed to be by Rembrandt are attributed to these pupils and are related to other works they have done. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars important scholarly contribution
The book offers a nice introduction to the artist's life and times. Also provides excellent insights regarding the workshop and distinguishing between Rembrandt's art and that of his pupils. The scholarship is indepth and apt, most of the writers being part of the Rembrandt Project. There are 83 separate plates (most in color) with wonderful essays and explanations.

Product Description

Since the second half of the last century art historians, realizing that the image of Rembrandt’s work had become blurred with time, have attempted to redefine the artist’s significance both as a source of inspiration to other artists and as a great artist in his own right. In order to carry on the work started by previous generations, a group of leading Dutch art historians from the university and museum world joined forces in the late 1960s in order to study afresh the paintings usually ascribed to the artist. The researchers came together in the Rembrandt Research Project which was established to provide the art world with a new standard reference work which would serve the community of art historians for the nearby and long future.

They examined the originals of all works attributed to Rembrandt taking full advantage of today’s sophisticated techniques including radiography, neutron activation autoradiography, dendrochronology and paint sample analysis — thereby gaining valuable insight into the genesis and condition of the paintings.

The result of this meticulous research is laid down chronologically in the following Volumes:

A Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings, Volume I, which deals with works from Rembrandt’s early years in Leiden(1629-1631), published in 1982.

A Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings, Volume II, covering his first years in Amsterdam (1631-1634), published in 1986.

THIS VOLUME: A Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings, Volume III, goes into his later years of reputation (1635-1642), published in 1990.

Each Volume consists of a number of Introductory Chapters as well as the full Catalogue of all paintings from the given time period attributed to Rembrandt. In this catalogue each painting is discussed and examined in a detailed way, comprising a descriptive, an interpretative and a documentary section. For the authenticity evaluation of the paintings three different categories are used to divide the works in:

A. Paintings by Rembrandt,
B. Paintings of which Rembrandt’s authorship cannot be positively either accepted or rejected, and
C. Paintings of which Rembrandt’s authorship cannot be accepted.

This volume (Volume III) contains 820 pages, starting of with three introductory chapters and discussing 86 paintings. In clear and accessible explanatory text all different paintings are discussed, larded with immaculate images of each painting. Details are shown where possible, as well as the results of modern day technical imaging. In this volume important paintings including the Night Watch are discussed.

This is a very high quality academic book on different paintings of Rembrandt. The Editors are true experts in the field. The price is considerable but in the history of art - there is no better reference work for paintings by Rembrandt. I am already saving for the next volume on self-portraits, which will hopefully be out soon. ... Read more

Seventeenth-century Holland gave rise to a wealthy merchant class whose members took pride in having their portraits painted. In Amsterdam, Rembrandt was a leading artist of the time, whose paintings showed both drama and psychological depth that continue to mark his work as masterpieces of Western art. A continuation of Barron's Great Artist Series. Full-color illus.Amazon.com Review
Rembrandt: Life of a Portrait Painter is one of thefirst in Barron's Great Artists series. It seems, at first, like thewonderful Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness books, with close-ups, bits ofseparate text under cameos, and all kinds of pictures. A colorphotograph of the Taj Mahal is included, for example, in the sectiontitled "The Artist and His Times" because it was built in1631. Small in format, this book nevertheless packs at least fiveimages to a layout and then frames the pages with crayonlike lines. Sowhile there are many well-chosen pictures, including all ofRembrandt's most moving portraits, there is an overstuffed look toalmost every two-page spread, and the reproductions are very small.David Spence is an entertaining writer who can turn a juicy phrase--herefers to "the macabre novelty of the occasion" of thedissection of a corpse, as shown in The Anatomy Lesson. Histext is more complex than a grade-school child could comprehend, butyoung teens would find this narrative tantalizing; readers learn aboutRembrandt's mistress and his common-law wife, as well as the artist'sbankruptcy conviction and a few other down-to-earth problems. Still, somehow Rembrandt's tenderness and genius glow. --Peggy Moorman ... Read more

Product Description
Rembrandt's intriguing painting technique has stirred the imagination of art lovers during his lifetime and ever since. In this book, Rembrandt's pictorial intentions and the variety of materials and techniques he applied to create his fascinating effects are unraveled in depth. At the same time, this "archaeology"of Rembrandt's paintings yields information on many other levels.

In art-historical research, the work of art as a material object is used increasingly as an important source of information about the painting itself, as well as about historic studio practice in general. The range from practical workshop devices to aesthetic and art-theoretical matters combined in this book offers a view of Rembrandt's daily practice and artistic considerations, while simultaneously providing a more three-dimensional image of the historical artist. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative.
As so many people have already said, this book is fantastic. It's definitely a book meant to be read by a painter as it gets very technical in some chapters. But if you are a serious painter, chances are you have been mesmerized by one of Rembrandt's paintings at some point, and if that's the case, this book is the best that you can buy on the subject. One of the most enlightening aspects of the book was that the author often uses 350 year old quotes or anectdotes relating to Rembrandt to prove his points. He dismisses some of the Romantic myths about Rembrandt's working methods, (which is refreshing) and outlines Rembrandt's general logic insightfully, starting immediately with paintings from his youth.I find myself constantly rereading or opening this book to study the pictures, which are very high quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Both Artists and Art Historians
The one thing that I found most fascinating about this book is that it discusses some of the things that you only learn in art class. From very practical things like the process of painting, to more theoretical stuff like how to create space on a flat canvas. I always thought that most of these art theoretical ideas were more of a contemporary thing. But if you read this book you'll see that the author traces many of them all the way back to Rembrandts day. It was a really important step for me to see this because I feel like it validated some of the things I have been taught. I can finally say to myself "Ok, the teacher didn't just pull that out of his butt, it actually has a long history and a firm foundation."

5-0 out of 5 stars Best research book on an old master I've ever seen
Superb scholarship and careful research make this one of my all time favourite art books. I bought this book years ago as a first edition printing and it's remained one of my favourites ever since.

If every art historian was this meticulous the bulk of the old masters secrets would be open for all. So many art books that critque great artists are flawed and obviously written by people who don't paint. They describe the obvious or miss important details that a real artist would look for. So when you get such a high standard of scholarship and research on a subject from an actual painter, the results are vastly superior to anything else on the market. And when the subject is Rembrandt, it's a book worth having if you love art.

This is a scholars review of a subject he genuinely does understand.

Worth every penny and highly recommended for any art lover, historian or classical painter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding out more about Rembrandt
I was born and raised in Amsterdam and have been familiar with the works of Rembrandt. This book gave me a very new and fresh insight on the way Rembrandt approached his works and I could vividly picture the Dutch artist painting in his atelier. It was fascinating to read about the research that has been done on all the art produced by Rembrandt and the conclusions that became apparent, dispelling various myths. For instance, I was surprised to find out that there was a separate craft that dealt with "ready-made" wood panels and canvases. As a student in painting, this book has given me invaluable insight into the way Rembrandt worked. Mr. van de Wetering has a very engaging and interesting writing style and his information is more than worthwhile for anyone with an interest in art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Rembrandt-nerds
A great, well illustrated and rich work, applying all the newest research and technology in the quest to reveal the working methods and workshop practice of Rembrandt. Well written, the book takes you on a journey through all the minute details of Rembrandts artworks, as well as other artists of his time. Mind you, this is not a how-to-paint-like type of book, but a review of a scientific research program concerning the paintings of Rembrandt. A book for artists, art historians and plain nerds. ...
