5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Rembrandt.

In her book Mariet Westerman guides us through the life and works of Rembrandt - from his earliest self-portraits to the introspective works of his later days. And she does so with empathy and a deep understanding of both the artist's character and the artistic, economic and social environment which he was a part of. Westerman writes in a matter-of-fact way without being superficial. Thus the book may be read by the specialist and novice alike and enhance the pleasure of both the next time they are confronted with the profound humanity of Rembrandt's art. This is no coffee-table book, but comes in a format made for reading and use in trains and galleries alike. Nevertheless, the book is beautifully illustrated with all the pictures relevant to a top biography of one of the most beloved artists in European culture. Highly recommended!

Rembrandt's masterful Bathsheba Reading King David's Letter is unusual both as a history painting and as a portrayal of a nude.Instead of displaying a sumptuous body for the viewer's delectation, Bathsheba elicits our empathy. This collection of essays by six leading Rembrandt scholars examines its qualities from perspectives ranging from changing perceptions of female beauty and the nude, to technical analysis, and biographical and psychological analysis of the artist, the subject, and the viewer. ... this is a great addition to a study for children on artists.Rembrandt's story is told at an upper grade school level.

The other fantastic feature is the beautiful color photos of his woks and two pull out pages of his etchings.

And the book also delves into analyzing Rembrand's works and explaining the imagery of the paintings.

From 1870 to 1935, the first true catalogues raisonnés of Rembrandt's paintings were produced, incorporating the results of individual connoisseurs' evaluations of authenticity and quality. This book, the first full-length study of this scholarly corpus, concentrates on the written connoisseurship of Wilhelm von Bode, Abraham Bredius, Cornelis Hofstede de Groot, and Wilhelm Valentiner, whose articles and catalogues first shaped the modern conception of Rembrandt as a painter. In addition to analyzing their written work, Scallen addresses the social context of their connoisseurial practices, as shaped by their museum careers and their relationships with dealers and collectors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book For Specialists
Rembrandt, Reputation, and the Practice of Connoisseurship focuses on a sixty-five year period from 1870 to 1935, when the number of works attributed to Rembrandt's oeuvre grew to a bloated 700 paintings, due in part to market demand for the artist's work, particularly in America. Scallen offers a detailed analysis of the accomplishments and methods of the leading Rembrandt scholars of the period: Wilhelm von Bode, Abraham Bredius, Cornelis Hofstede de Groot, and Wilhelm Valentiner. Scallen shows how the scholarship of all four, though rigorous and sophisticated, was in part influenced by market forces, as the expert attributions they issued (or "expertises") directly affected the value of art works and were, moreover, not issued for free. Scallen provides a sober examination of the Rembrandt literature of the period, including the archival work of Bredius and Hofstede de Groot, the various catalogues raisonnees, and interpretive articles - but, equally interesting, she also captures the personalities of the individual scholars and maps out the ways in which their personal animosities and intellectual turf wars often shaped the intimate details of their work and opinions. In light of the ongoing and controversial endeavors of the Rembrandt Research Project, Scallen's thoroughly documented and historical contextualized study of the attributions made by this earlier generation of experts gives rich food for thought. That said, it is definitely a book for specialists only. ... Read more

If Rembrandt's career had ended in 1631, before the 25-year-old artist moved from his native town of Leiden to the booming metropolis of Amsterdam, how would history remember him? This is the theme of Rembrandt Creates Rembrandt.Rembrandt's work in Leiden was already extraordinarily creative and intensely dramatic. In the years 1629 to 1631, the artist struggled to master different genres and techniques. He worked with Jan Lievens and took his first known pupil, Gerrit Dou. By the time he decided to seek his fortune in Amsterdam, his work had already achieved a unique and profound sense of color, light, and human emotion.Rembrandt Creates Rembrandt includes contributions by Alan Chong, Arthur Wheelock, Christopher White, and Mariët Westermann. ... Product Description
Scrutinizing his own features time and time again, Rembrandt left an extensive pictorial autobiography-his surviving self-portraits include 45 oil paintings, scores of drawings, and over 30 etchings. This absorbing book explores how Rembrandt`s self-portraits developed over his life span, why the genre was so important in his work, and how his innovative style influenced his contemporaries.Amazon.com Review
Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) may not have been a handsome man, but he was an exceptional painter of himself. This sumptuous catalog, published to coincide with the exhibition of his self-portraits at the National Gallery in London, has glossy reproductions of all the paintings and etchings from the show, plus copies of works that are long lost and some not released by the galleries or private collectors who own them. The images are all thoroughly annotated to elucidate their history, and the scholarship is impressive, being mostly drawn from the Rembrandt Research Project, which for years has been working with a combination of x-ray technology and patient research to ascertain the age of the pictures and confirm the identity of their painter. This is not easy work: Rembrandt had many pupils, and he encouraged them to copy his own self-portraits as practice, leading to the unusual situation of a host of Rembrandt self-portraits not actually painted by the master himself. The findings of the project have been contentious, with paintings unexpectedly relegated or elevated through reappraisal. What shines through, though, is the sheer diversity of Rembrandt's genius: the early paintings and etchings in which he turns to a mirror to study expression; the periods of dressing up variously as an Oriental potentate, a soldier, an artisan, and St. Paul; and the famous trilogy of self-portraits painted in his final year that seem to show a man old beyond his years. The catalog also contains a selection of works by his pupils Gerrit Dou and Samuel van Hoogstraten and essays by Rembrandt scholars that seek to revise the somewhat romantic conceit that the series is some sort of spiritual autobiography. Rembrandt by Himself, an intelligent and resourceful accompaniment to the exhibition, will continue to transport the reader long after the portraits in the exhibition have returned to their respective homes. --David Vincent, Amazon.co.uk ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The autobiography as a series of masterpieces
Rembrandt tells his own story as a series of self- portraits. He traces his life from early youth to sad old age. He presents himself posing as if he understands the self can be a social construct. He creates great masterpieces including the Frick self- portrait where he sits as master and ruler , king of the world of art. He in telling his story looks deeply into his soul and traces a single life as no other painter before or since has. Even his great countryman Van Gogh cannot in his hair and soul raising self- portraits touch the depth and broad humanity of the Rembrandt self - portrait and soul .This is human art at its highest, and most inspiring. Who reads this book reads a great painter and great soul, one of mankind's greatest gifts to itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Master
It's about time that I found a (good) book on this subject. Rembrandts self-portraits (I feel) are of his most important work. The quality of the prints are wonderful...unlike 90% of the art related books floating around. The color reproduction is more accurate than most. This is a must have forany fan of Rembrandt...or for any true lover of painting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book on the self portraits of the master.
This book is facinating. It includes three good and fairly dry essays on the topic of Rembrandt's self portraits. More interesting are the prints of all the works that are considered his self portraits, and the detailedcommentary on these works. The prints are very good and quite useful forthe lover of Rembrandt. ... Read more

Product Description
114 b/w photographsThis richly detailed study reconceptualizes a striking but enigmatic moment in Rembrandt's art from the 1650s--one of the artist's most prolific and creative periods. Michael Zell identifies a significant theological shift in Rembrandt's use of religious imagery and interprets this shift in light of the unique religious and social conditions of seventeenth-century Amsterdam. Rembrandt's biblical art has generally been regarded as the embodiment of a Protestant aesthetic. By looking closely at the artist's relationship with his patron Rabbi Menasseh ben Israel and the ideas of a group of "philosemitic" Protestants with whom the rabbi was engaged in an apologetic dialogue, Zell deepens and complicates our understanding of Rembrandt's sacred art from this period. ... “Rembrandt was, above all, a painter and etcher of scenes from the Old and New Testaments and it is in the description of his interpretations of these texts that Dr Tümpel is unrivalled among modern writers on the artist. . . . The product of long and mature reflection on the art of Rembrandt and, in particular, on his religious art.”—The Art Newspaper

This large art monograph of Rembrandt is written by Christian Tümpel, a renowned expert on the subject, who was a Fellow at the Warburg Institute in London (1968-1969) and was subsequently invited to succeed Julius Held as chair of Northern European Art at Columbia University in New York the following year.

Product Description

One of the most fascinating aspects of Rembrandt's extraordinary artistic career is his suite of brooding half-length portraits of religious figures from the late 1650s and early 1660s. Painted during a difficult time in the artist's life—when he no longer enjoyed a ready market for his works and may have turned to his deep religious convictions for solace—these images are among the most evocative Rembrandt created. For years scholars have debated whether these paintings were intended as a series, yet until now these works have, unbelievably, never been shown together.

An exhibition by the National Gallery of Art and this accompanying catalog assemble seventeen of the paintings for the first time, finally giving the powerful images their due. Many of these subtle and wondrous paintings have been identified as images of apostles and evangelists, but among them are also representations of Christ, the Virgin, and still-unidentified saints and monks. In Rembrandt's typical fashion, the men and women in these portraits peer out of the dark recesses of dimly lit interiors as though burdened by the weight of their spiritual and emotional concerns. Yet recent archival research has raised questions about their attribution, the relationships among the paintings, and, in a broader sense, Rembrandt's life and career—issues addressed by the contributors to this volume. With its lavish color images and state-of-the-field research, Rembrandt's Late Religious Portraits will make a profound contribution to the understanding of this unique and provocative body of work.

5-0 out of 5 stars The god of painting
This book is the catalogue for a marvelous exhibition held at the National Gallery in Washington and the Getty in Los Angeles in 2005. It concentrates on the figures of apostlesthe artist painted in the late 1650's and early 1660's, complemented with two portraits of the Virgin. There are some fantastic discoveries, such as the little-known 1661 Virgin of Sorrows (in the collection of a small French museum in the city of Epinal)or the haunting Saint Bavo (Göteborgs Konstmuseum). Each painting is thoroughly analysed and the introductory essays written by experts in the field (National Gallery curator Arthur Wheelock especially)show how important religion was to the artist's life and art.

A valuable addition to the literature on Rembrandt with many high-quality illustrations and, rare enough to be noted, numerous magnified details which enable the reader to distinguish the artist's thick layers of paint. ... Read more

I thought that the best thing in this book was a story about an ancient Greek painter named Zeuxis.Back before photography, painters put a lot of effort into trying to capture reality in a picture, which might not sound too hard until you find out that for a guy like Zeuxis, "the situationseemed so ridiculous that he burst into laughter. And he laughed so hardthat he died."(p. 8)The amazing thing for me is that anyone whohad so much talent could live to be 61, which is the setting that is usedfor Rembrandt to be the narrator of this book:"Zeuxis ~ he was asold as I am, sixty-one."The dates on pages 55-57 reveal thatRembrandt lived to be 63.Most of the information in this book is abouthis art. ...
