Product Description
Georges Seurat'smasterpiece is among the most recognisable and frequently reproduced paintings in the world. First exhibited in 1886,La Grande Jatteis a visual manifesto that became a landmark in the development of modern painting. It has been enjoyed by millions since it entered the Art Institute's collection in 1924. In 2004, The Art Institute of Chicago opened a major exhibition to celebrate and shed new light on this iconic painting, featuring preparatory paintings and drawings to trace its evolutionary process. Seurat was not trying to re-create nature in paint, he wanted to produce images of modern life that would be as powerful and permanent as the pictures in the Louvre. The many preparatory studies, some of which were never used in the final composition, attest to the artist's ambitions, and Scala's unique 4-fold format creates a visually exciting presentation of the many intricate details. ... Product Description

"... a powerful lesson in what a museum can do when it draws on its own resources." -- The Washington Times

"Seen individually or as an ensemble, these compositions represent a culminating phase of Seurat's development, at once lucid, subtle, and strong.... In its clear focus upon an important aspect of Seurat's work, it nevertheless stands as a welcome addition to the literature on that preeminent master of Neo-Impressionism." -- Choice

This illuminating introduction to Seurat's unusual art explores the four different views of Gravelines, a small seaport in Normandy, which Seurat painted in 1890, the summer before his death. The book contains reproductions and full documentation of Seurat's Gravelines works and analyzes Seurat's distinctive approach to color, design, and perception.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great series
I love the Mini Masters series, though this wasn't one of the best. There were only seven paintings included in the book, so there wasn't as much of a cohesive story as some of the other books. I felt like the end came suddenly and would have liked some more. To be fair, Seurat died in his 30s and so the authors would have had a lot less artwork to choose from. If you are collecting this series, this is a must. But if you are a first time purchaser, I would recommend the authors' books on Cassatt, Monet or Matisse.

4-0 out of 5 stars My 6 month old daughter loves this book!
My 6 month old enjoys turning the pages on her own and looking at the pictures in this book.We can sit her on the floor and she'll spend 15 minutes studying the pictures as she turns the pages.I like the book because it exposes her to art, and because it's got a cute story and rhyme to it.I plan on buying more books from this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sunday with Seurat
I am a preschool teacher for 3 year olds. We "study" different artists and paint like them. Seurat is one of the artists that I teach my students about and they paint like him using bingo bottles. This book is excellent for the three year olds. It shows many of Seurat's paintings without a lot of words. The children love looking at it and love listening to me read the book! It is a perfect book for introducing art and artists to young children!

5-0 out of 5 stars Art for toddlers!
I love the fact that these books exist! My daughter is one and is mesmerized by these books. She sits down with them and just looks at them, intently.I love that I can share art with my toddler in a safe and fun way.Otherwise, I'd risk my expensive art books at her little hands.I highly recommend these books, even if you're not a big art fan.The colors alone are great for toddlers!! ... Product Description
Published in association with The Art Institute of ChicagoThe story behind one of the best- known paintings of all time

A Sunday on la Grande Jatte-1884 continues to fascinate art lovers over a century since Georges Seurat painted and first displayed it-so much so that it alone will form the basis of an entire exhibit at the world-famous Art Institute of Chicago. Award-winning author Robert Burleigh uses this extraordinary painting to give young children a compelling look at Seurat's life and introduce them to the post-impressionist art technique Seurat invented-pointillism, in which a picture is constructed from dots of pure color that blend at a distance into recognizable shapes and various color tones.

Part biography, part art appreciation, Seurat and La Grande Jatte tells the story behind the story depicted on the canvas of a busy park on a Sunday afternoon in 1884, and encourages children to discover their own methods of self-expression. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
The author has done a brilliant job crafting a book that appeals to elementary age students.I am an art teacher and used this as my primary resource when introducing Georges Seurat and Pointillism. There is just enough biographical information thrown in to benefit the students, but not so much it bores them.Fantastic examination of the painting and explanation of the process involved in making this piece.Wonderful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Especially recommended for youngsters with a flair for art
Robert Burleigh's Seurat And La Grande Jatte is a very different kind of children's picture book -- it is an appreciation of a classic painting, "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte - 1884", which was created with the remarkable art style of pointilism (painting with dots) by the talented and dedicated French artist Seurat. Details and reproductions of this remarkable work (as well as other compositions by Seurat), superbly background the scene it portrays and deftly enhances the narrative musings into the life of the hard-working artist which fill the pages of this marvelous children's book which is especially recommended for talented youngsters who themselves have a flair for art. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dot Mode
Impressionist and post-Impressionist authority Pierre Courthion says that first tries often show the full range of an artist's talent: "Man at a parapet," aka "The invalid," painted harmonious curves, modulated planes, and straight lines; and "Head of a girl" brushstroked dark against light with the turned away face of an Italian painting and without contour lines. In fact, GEORGES SEURAT became the first painter to draw boundaries as spreading surfaces in lighted areas and as silhouettes in shaded areas. He went on to paint Impressionist-style themes of bourgeois city and countryside life, cafe and circus scenes, seashores and summer landscapes with dots blending into shimmering light and subtle color variations at a distance. The book's 40 colorplates, along with John Russell's SEURAT, show the most important of his 700 drawings and 200 paintings: the blue of "Bathing at Asnieres" and the immense scale of "Bec du hoc" from Bruegel the Elder; the dancing diagonals and slanting double bass of "Le chahut"; "The circus" clown, horse and lady rider galloping and jumping before a captivated audience in a composition of ellipses, ovals and trapezoids worthy of Raphael's "Transfiguration"; the frontal sunset of "Evening, Honfleur" hallmarking a great artist; the ancestors of abstract art in "Port-en-Bessin" and "Rue Saint-Vincent"; the differently brushstroked beach, cliff, mist, sea, ships and vegetation of "Shore at Bas-Butin"; and the David-Pierre Humbert de Superville-styled plumbline straight figures among sultry summer lights and shadows of the masterpiece "A Sunday afternoon on the island of La Grande Jatte". Readers can put pointillist art in context with Bernard Denvir's POST-IMPRESSIONISM, Walter S. Gibson's BRUEGEL and Wolfgang Stechow's PIETER BRUEGEL THE ELDER. ... Read more

Product Description
Georges Seurat, painter of Sunday on the Island of La Grande Jatte, had a meteoric career that ended in 1891 with his death at age 31. In this generously illustrated book, the leading specialist on Seurat examines the entire range of the artist's work, focusing on individual paintings and drawings and interpreting the personal and social meanings of their subjects.

Robert L. Herbert closely examines Seurat's early oil panels of rural and suburban settings, early drawings of Parisians at work and leisure, and later canvases and drawings of café- concerts and circuses. Showing that Seurat's work drew on classical tradition as well as on popular arts, Herbert reevaluates the artist's painting technique and argues that individual pictures reveal artistic craft and trial and error rather than a "scientific" nature. And he demonstrates that although Seurat's drawings and paintings have striking formal structures, they are not "abstract," but rather poetic distillations of social and psychological meanings.

This collection of the most influential of Herbert's writings on Seurat, long out of print, bear out the praise he has received for "his ability to mix a deep knowledge of paintings and drawings as physical objects with an acute awareness of the way they embody ideas and can be understood as social documents" (Jack Flam, New York Review of Books). This attractive book will appeal both to the general reader and to the student of French nineteenth-century art. ... Read more
