5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Entertaining
The scholars can have their field day telling you how important this two volume set is - and they are right. That's not the reason why most of us should want to own this, however. Students of Art will learn much about Whistler, his times and the Victorian lithography process. Collectors will be able to tell the "real" lithos from the less valuable copies. The rest of us can enjoy the man, his talent & wit and marvel at his ability to create such beautiful, interesting pictures. For less than the cost of one contemporary print, you get to enjoy them all. If it helps you find one that Whistler pulled, well that's just icing on the cake. The digital transfers are superb and second only to finding one pulled from the original stones. Highly recommended! ... Read more

Excerpt: William Blake (28 November 175712 August 1827) was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of both the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. His prophetic poetry has been said to form "what is in proportion to its merits the least read body of poetry in the English language". His visual artistry has led one contemporary art critic to proclaim him "far and away the greatest artist Britain has ever produced". Although he lived in London his entire life except for three years spent in Felpham he produced a diverse and symbolically rich corpus, which embraced the imagination as "the body of God", or "Human existence itself". Considered mad by contemporaries for his idiosyncratic views, Blake is held in high regard by later critics for his expressiveness and creativity, and for the philosophical and mystical undercurrents within his work. His paintings and poetry have been characterized as part of both the Romantic movement and "Pre-Romantic", for its large appearance in the 18th century. Product Description
James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) was one of the most original artists of the late 19th-century. Flamboyant dandy and ebullient publicist, friend of Oscar Wilde, Whistler was also a meticulous craftsman dedicated to the perfection of his art. He was born in the United States but travelled to Paris to study painting. Under the influence of Courbet, he began as a realist painter, but gradually developed a startlingly original method of composition, refining his technique to the barest essentials. He was one of the first to argue that the abstract ingredients of a painting - the lines, shapes, colours and tones - could in themselves be the subject; he entitled the portrait of his mother "Arrangement in Grey and Black". His emphasis on selection and swiftness of execution made a shocking contrast with the art of his day, concerned as it was with finish and elaborate literary allusions. Ruskin, the champion of Pre-Raphaelitism, accused him of "flinging a pot of paint in the public's face" - a comment that promptly inspired the famous lawsuit which left Whistler victorious but bankrupt.Whistler was one of the most independent artists in the second half of the nineteenth century, comparable in stature with Degas. His "Nocturnes" create an indefinable mood of wistful poetry, while his portraits remain some of the most haunting images in nineteenth-century art. ... Read more

Product Description

Whistler embarked on a new project in the 1880s, working on a small scale in oil, pastel and watercolor to depict new London subjects and painting portraits of new urban types. This book, the first critical study of Whistler and his Impressionist followers, offers an in-depth analysis of Whistler's art as well as new insights into his modernist project.

Using a wealth of primary material, Robins tracks the history of Whistler and his group and shows through testimony and practice that they were formulating an identity as avant-garde artists. This is the first critical study of these Impressionist artists and throws new light on this neglected aspect of British art.

Product Description
James McNeill Whistler was one of the most misinterpreted creative talents of his age. While devoted to the expression of the beautiful, he was among the first to recognize that popularized arts and commercialized leisure were complex, interrelated phenomena that made urban life "modern." Whistler's showmanship had far greater impact than countless imitations of his The White Girl and Portrait of the Painter's Mother might suggest. His purposeful use of past art; his intermingling of private and public spaces; his ability to tailor his work to the realities of the Victorian marketplace; his understanding and exploitation of shifting economic, class, and gender roles; and his clever use of fashion and decoration all lead us to a richer understanding of "modernism" and a broader assessment of his contribution to it.

Whistler's emphatically aesthetic pictures, made the more inscrutable by purposefully confusing titles, remain uneasy pieces to the present time. Probing some of these tensions, Dr. Curry explores the intersection of Whistler's determined aestheticism with the commercial art world. Key examples of Whistler's paintings, drawings, and prints are set against related images from both fine art and popular culture drawn from the past two hundred years. Approximately 250 color and monotone illustrations.Amazon.com Review
In this remarkably wide-ranging and imaginatively illustrated study, Whistler scholar David Park Curry quotes a querulous contemporary critic who complained, "A gallery does not suffice for Mr. Whistler. He needs a stage." Indeed he did, and Curry ably demonstrates the ways in which the painter--who was briefly an actor—seized center stage for himself, and startled the art world with a noisy injection of theatrical ideas. Curry proves that Whistler's drive to abstraction wasn't his only modern aspect: he was an Abominable Showman who shook up installation practice, courted fame via scandal, and knew art for art’s sake could also be, as he said of his epochal 1883 Arrangement in White and Yellow show, a "great Shebang." Curry doesn't just reproduce Whistler's sensitive Venice etchings and Ruskin-enraging paintings, he describes their influences and impact. It's illuminating to see Whistler's Rembrandtesque self-portrait next to his depictions by William Merritt Chase and Max Beerbohm, and Aubrey Beardsley's portrait of him as Pan alongside Mapplethorpe's scarily similar Self-Portrait with Horns. Curry’s eight essays are eye-opening, the 382 illustrations eye-delighting. And the Punch cartoon showing pre-Whistler art patrons zooming around a gallery clad in "Edison’s Anti-Gravitation Under-Clothing" made me laugh out loud. --Tim Appelo ... Read more

Product Description
Planning only a brief stay in Venice in 1879, Whistler found himself enchanted by the city's beauty and remained for more than a year. This lovely book is the first to follow Whistler's progress throughout Venice as he produced fifty etchings, a few oils, and a remarkable group of one hundred pastels. Alongside each of his evocative portraits of the city are photographs of the actual site. Published for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Whistler's Venice: Excellent!
This is a really wonderful book and very helpful for everyone who knows and loves Venice. I discovered Whistler for me at the exhibition "VENICE. From Canaletto and Turner to Monet" at Basle and are very happy to having found this book. Whistler used the right technique. Chalk and pastel on brown paper: the ideal material for that fascinating andmorbid city. Also the etchings are excellent. The book is designed with great love and the idea to replenish Whistler's works with contemporary photos is brilliant. I love this book and would like to thank the authors for their outstanding work.

Product Description
Costume and fashion were a lifelong obsession for James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). His exquisite depictions of women and the details of their clothing contributed to his career as one of the most accomplished and successful—if controversial—artists of the nineteenth century. This lavishly illustrated book focuses on fashion in Whistler’s art as a key to understanding his life and work and as a new means of exploring his relationship with women and his portraits of them. The book offers new insights into some of Whistler’s most beloved masterpieces in the context of art and fashion in the Victorian period.

Illustrated with paintings, pastels, prints, and drawings by Whistler, the book also presents photographs of his sitters, contemporary costumes, works by other artists of the period, and artifacts from Whistler’s studio. These illustrations, with new material drawn from the Centre for Whistler Studies, illuminate the interaction between the artist and the women he portrayed during his fifty years in Paris and London—mistresses, family members, artists, actresses, aristocrats, and many others. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful color fashion magazine of the nineteenth century
I received this book as a gift from my art teacher for my high-school graduation. I only knew a few works of Whistler then, like Arrangement in Grey and Black: The Artist's Mother--which is an amazing piece of art, but not as sensual and beautiful as other portraits that are abound in this volume.
As a teenager I adored this book, which discusses the role of painted portrait for socialites of the time, and speaks the fashion language of cloth, hem and colors for each portrait. ... Read more
