Communication scholars have acknowledged that racialdiversity does not receive adequate examination fromorganizational communication scholars. This studyexamined race related diversity training at apredominantly white Northwest Ohio university fromthe perspectives of undergraduate African, Latina/o,Asian, Pacific Islander, and Native American (ALANA)students. Research demonstrates that onpredominantly white campuses, ALANA students mayface unique challenges that may differ from theexperiences of their white peers. However, race- related diversity training programs are frequentlydeveloped without assessing the needs of ALANApeople. This research used open-ended surveys with127 ALANA students, audiotape recorded interviewswith seven ALANA students, and a diversity trainingmanual. Grounded theory was used to develop themes. The manual themes were compared to ALANA generatedthemes to assess whether students needs were beingmet by the current diversity training program. Thisbook concludes with a discussion of the findings, implications, and future recommendations. ... Read more

From the supplier: The sensationalized and biased reporting of the alleged 'disloyalty' of Chinese Americans in the wake of the Los Alamos National Laboratory controversy serves to mislead the public and encourage fear, suspicion and loathing of Asian Americans. The case has sparked a trust, loyalty and security crisis involving naturalized scientists, engineers and researchers in government, the academic community and industry. Such malicious reporting has also resulted in a trial by publicity for Dr Wen Ho Lee and is expected to further fan the fires of racism and division in the country.

Product Description

Hitherto, the academic study of Indian cinema has focused primarily on Bollywood, despite the fact that the Tamil film industry, based in southern India, has overtaken Bollywood in terms of annual output. This book examines critically the cultural and cinematic representations in Tamil cinema. It outlines its history and distinctive characteristics, and proceeds to consider a number of important themes such as gender, religion, class, caste, fandom, cinematic genre, the politics of identity and diaspora. Throughout, the book cogently links the analysis to wider social, political and cultural phenomena in Tamil and Indian society. Overall, it is an exciting and original contribution to an under-studied field, also facilitating a fresh consideration of the existing body of scholarship on Indian cinema.

Product Description

From henna tattoo kits available at your local mall to "faux Asian" fashions, housewares and fusion cuisine; from the new visibility of Asian film, music, video games and anime to the current popularity of martial arts motifs in hip hop, Asian influences have thoroughly saturated the U.S. cultural landscape and have now become an integral part of the vernacular of popular culture.

By tracing cross-cultural influences and global cultural trends, the essays in East Main Street bring Asian American studies, in all its interdisciplinary richness, to bear on a broad spectrum of cultural artifacts. Contributors consider topics ranging from early Asian American movie stars to the influences of South Asian iconography on rave culture, and from the marketing of Asian culture through food to the contemporary clamor for transnational Chinese women's historical fiction. East Main Street hits the shelves in the midst of a boom in Asian American population and cultural production. This book is essential not only for understanding Asian American popular culture but also contemporary U.S. popular culture writ large.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Need to Know about Asian American History
This is indeed a valuable resourse, an education in easily assimilated format. Thanks to Ms. Novas for such a concise and wide-reaching work!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Readable and Fun History book!
This books covers the whole range of Asian American history in a quick and fun way while being extremely well researched and deceptively scholarly. If a book can be both popular and easy read and yet a perfect academic resource, this is it. I learned more in one hour of reading it than in whole semesters in school. I strongly recommed this book as well as other fiction and non-fiction work by Himilce Novas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read! Very informative and full of fun stuff!
Wow! I love this book. The question and answer format is really user friendly. It covers all the Asian American groups and gives their history and all sorts of cultural information without feeling heavy. And yet, is IS heavy in the sense that it gave me a very good handle on the struggles and the contribution of the various Asian American groups, as well as all their celebrations, important holidays, legal landmarks, etc. I am half Japanese and it made me very proud of my mother. I am giving the book to all my relatives on my father's side. This one's a definite for any home library. They should teach it in schools. Maybe they do.It should be required reading for all non-Asians as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's Not Brain Surgery, But. . .
This book is in a readable format consisting of questions that middle and senior high school students might ask about Asian Americans. For the most part, the explanations are clear and short.I do not agree with the reviewers who hated this book. The titles they recommended are scholarly works more suitable for the college level. This book is a useful introduction, not "Everthing you need to know," as the title suggests. This book has sparked interest in Asian American history and many of my middle school students have gone further to read Sucheng Chan and Ron Takaki's Asian Pacific Islander series, but I haven't had much luck using the more scholarlyAsian American histories as a starting point.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT HISTORY BOOK! FAST AND FUNNY AN DEEP!
this book was an unexpected bonus. not only did i totally enjoy it, it was a breeze to read cause it's in funny Q & As, and when i finished it (i read it here and there, cafeteria style), i really felt like a whole door had been opened to me about asian american history and asian american life--this is an incredible and great and excellent culture. i was also able to use this book to help me with my college history courses, and even with my asian american friends when i visited with their families. two thumbs up! ... Product Description
This work examines both predominately black newspapers in general and four in particular—the Chicago Defender, the Pittsburgh Courier, the Black Dispatch (Oklahoma City), and the Jackson (Mississippi) Advocate—and their coverage of national events. The beginnings of the black press are detailed, focusing on how they reported the anti-slavery movement, the Civil War and the Reconstruction era. Their coverage of the migration of blacks to the industrial north in the early twentieth century and World War I are next examined, followed by the black press response to World War II and the civil rights movement. The survival techniques used by the editors, how some editors reacted when faced with threats of physical harm, and how the individual editorial policies affected the different newspapers are fully explored. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars LEARNED MORE THAN I ANTICIPATED. A MUST READ.
Chock full of knowledge and information that we all need as black people. I think that this book should be on the coffee table of every black household. Glad I purchased and read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Top 25 Things Black Folks Do That We Need to STOP!!!
The book was very informative. This book is a must read for all African Americans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Treat yourself and a loved one to some KNOWLEDGE!!!!!
Mr. Boothe is on point with this book!!!!He is the epitome of an astute intellectual warrior. He is fierce and flows with the truth wherever it may take him.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and appreciate someone taking time to put many of the issues faced by Black America in book form.We need more authors like Mr. Boothe. If you find yourself getting upset with what you are reading, it's okay, keep reading and I'm sure you will see the truth as it stands........obvious!We have been so brained washed and presented with mistruths for so long, when we finally read or hear the truth, it truly seems "unbelievable".Take time and treat yourself to some knowledge. As the bible states, "My people perish because of a lack of knowledge". With that said, what racial group of people are perishing!?!??!Wake up people!!!!Make sure you check out Mr. Boothe's first book, Why Are So Many Black Men in Prison? A Comprehensive Account of How and Why the Prison Industry Has Become a Predatory Entity in the Lives of African-American Men.You won't be disappointed; money and time well invested.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very special book indeed, from which you will definitely learn something
Learned a lot from reading this book. The kind of information that it contains is rare to see in published print nowadays. But I'll bet you won't see this author getting lots of media support and airtime on too many T.V. and radio shows! The message is too real and is really what many of us need to hear, but like they say, sometimes the truth hurts and lies feel better so we shun the harsh truth and embrace the lies. This book deals with those harsh truths directly and in proper fashion. This is one of those books that you never get rid of and can use as a reference tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read that's full of relevant info for blacks who are serious about vitalizing our families and communities
I love this book more than I can even put into words. All I can say is read it, read it, read it! Study it, even. No matter who you are and no matter your education level, I guarantee that you will learn something from this book. I'm sure that this author has a lot of haters because of some of the things he proposes but I support his ideas 100% and then some. I support them because I honestly believe that if black folk started doing everything proposed in this book (and teaching it to their children) that we would be more than alright in the present and would be in a much better overall situation in the future, and so would the rest of the country and world. ... In this powerful new study, Ellison demonstrates the unique role of black music as an articulation of black aspirations and fears and as a reaction to a whole range of social, economic, and political realities. She reveals black music as a soundtrack for life in all its complexity. Through a very close examination of lyrics, musical style, and form in black music throughout history, Ellison brings to light a music varied in its intentions and impact, a catalyst for activism, and a stimulus for changing attitudes. The book is organized around topical issues and explores such themes as black power, revolution, socialism, black feminism, and world peace. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is engaging, enlightening, and perhaps infuriating
The Gulf War still draws our attention seven years after the American-led coalition achieved an apparently decisive victory over the Iraqi armed forces. This publicly announced triumph signified both a quickrestabilization of Middle Eastern power politics as well as arevitalization of the United States' world mission after the end of theCold War.Here was a victory that rapidly accomplished something. Today, this positive assessment demands reconsideration. We are presentedalmost on a daily basis with evidence of the continued solidity of SaddamHussein's reign as Iraqi dictator, the renewed floundering of U.S. foreignpolicy in the Balkans and elsewhere, and the tragic implications of theso-called "mystery illnesses" experienced by Gulf War veterans. Perhaps the obvious question of what the Gulf War accomplished really leadsto a deeper question: what was the conflict all about in the first place? A new coalition of scholarly essays edited by Paul Leslie probes the deepermeanings of the Gulf War in ways which neither the media nor our politicalleaders have apparently ever contemplated. The Gulf War as PopularEntertainment bursts forth in its very title as a book with a mission or assome might see it, a definite ax to grind.Leslie himself makes this clearin the book's preface, when he states that these writings "transcendsacred political lines of demarcation and offer unapologetic dessentingviews"(vii). In short, not only do Leslie and his fellow authorsoffer scholarly interpretations of the Gulf War's societal dimensions, butthey also court controversy in the name of public awareness. As one of thecontributors, J. Timmons Roberts put it: "The exclusion of theseissues from the realm of mainstream debate underlines the importance ofsociology's role as society's watchdog"(53).One may not agree withthe grandiose nature of this particular assertion, but it does indicate theboldness, indeed passion with which these scholars contend that thesupposedly sacred cause of the Gulf War was actually a gigantic exercise inpublic manipulation. The first essay, written by Ali Kamali, looksat the truism that the Gulf War was not fought over hallowed principles, oreven desert land, but instead the oil beneath the Kuwaiti sands.Kamaliutilizes an impressive battery of statistics to demonstrate teh incrediblestake the United States - and perhaps even more so its European allies -had in restoring not just the political but also the economic status quo inthe Persian Gulf region.Kamali distills the essence of his argument intothe culminating statement that the Allied coalition, carrying the banner ofthe New World Order "served as an instrument of the world's industrialpowers"(11). Julia Burkart turns to the role of the media inmobilizing public support for the war as well as obscuring the real issuesat work in the conflict, portraying military and political leaders as thereal actors in this drama. She rather interestingly describes the press asessentially "a reactive institution, taking its cues from politicalauthority"(20).Without questioning the recurrent chauvanisticimpulses of the American people, Burkart continues her essentially"top-down" analysis by concluding that "the public wascoached and misled by incomplete and slanted press coverage"(20). But if the American people receive partial victim status in this scenario, the real victims are, of course, the Iraqi people whom Allied weaponsslaughtered, while American television audiences were lulled into ahigh-tech stupor.Burkart contends that in the representation of war as avideo game "the serious business of war was trivialized into agame...carnage...had been deleted from this clean and righteouswar"(28). Leslie's own article, co-written with Victor Archibong, deals with the oft-criticized military-industrial complex, and by goingback to the Sixties has a deep historical resonance.Ex-president DwightD. Eisenhower foretold in 1961 that "we must guard against theacquisition of unwarranted influence...by the military-industrialcomplex" warning of a "disastrous rise of misplacedpower"(33-34)."Ike's caveat," far from being the outburstof some anti-establishment leftist, was the sober reflection of a statesmanand war hero, and a Republican to boot. Refuting the idea that defenseindustries foster economic presperity, Leslie and Archibong have determinedthat such a system of perpetual arms spending diverts public money andgovernmental energies away from problems of societal misery andhopelessness. And war itself appears as a useful siphoning off of socialtensions, by giving jobs (as cannon fodder) to the under privileged.Theauthors are unsparing in their conclusion that "the conditionsproduced by the military-industrial complex foster a tacit conspiracy whichleads us to armed conflict and maintains the system itself"(39).Thisidea of a "conspiracy" is more or less implicit in the otheressays as well, but in most cases these social scientists tend to identifynot active, conscious conspiracies of the Oliver Stone variety, but themore or less self-protective reflexes of entrenched systems andinstitutions. Finally, the earlier mentioned essay by Roberts more orless ties the first three essays together, offering a commentary mainlygeared to those witin the sociological profession.Even the casual readerwill find this last piece useful in that it tests and qualifies some of theassumptions raised by the earlier authors. And this critical stock takingalso gives a sense of the animated discussion these papers no doubtgenerated when originally presented at a scholarly conference. Anyonewho reads The Gulf War as Popular Entertainment will find it at turnsengaging, enlightening, and perhaps infuriating. These pages contain noreferences to high-level Pentagon meetings, no dramatic images of F-16staking off from carrier decks at dawn, and no glimpses at Scuds beingintercepted just in the nick of time.We have already been treated to allthat and more on CNN.What this book does offer is the controversialassertion that war itself is becoming part of a pseudo-participatory mediaspectacle substituting for the informed debate vital to any democracy'ssurvival.Accordingly, this book merits attention. ...
